Viva a internet!

With Albert Hammond Jr.'s solo career well on its way to taking precedence (at least in his mind) over his work with The Strokes, it seemed high time that more of the band went their own way. Julian Casablancas kind of did with that one video he made for Converse, but we'd not seen much of the New Yorkers who were once (and perhaps rightly) hailed as the saviours of rock and roll.

That's all about to change now, as The Strokes' rhythm section seems to have got a little antsy for action. So drummer Fabrizio Moretti is starting a project by the name of Little Joy with
the help of Rodrigo Amarante and Binki Shapiro. Catch bassist Nikolai Fraiture in Nickel Eye, a project he started with Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs fame (hooray!) and Regina Spektor (balls). Their debut - The Time of the Assassins is forthcoming.

Valensi is not the only YYY with time on his hands, however. The incomparable Karen O has a new side project as well, called Native Korean Rock and the Fishnets. I swear to God. Anyway, they're giving two performances at Union Pool in Brooklyn, so if you're in that area around July 21st (that's tonight), then maybe try and snag a seat? Whatever.

Karen O is pretty wicked cool. I may or may not have spent the greater part of the last week playing Rock Band, and not to brag or anything, but I'm pretty good at singing "Maps". That has to count for something doesn't it?

When Karen isn't singing with her art punk band, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, she takes on a variety of side projects. She helped to record for the soundtrack for the new Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack and last year's I'm Not There. Most recently, she's been working on "Native Korean Rock", an asian-themed side music project.

Native Korean Rock is performing Monday in Brooklyn. If you are around, go get some tickets now

If your life is in need of a righteous shot in the arm, perk up, Ani's back! And she's gone all funky again! The wee workaholic releases her latest album – her 20th since 1990 – Red Letter Year on September 29th with the promise of much exuberance and cheer. After opening with a double helping of political rallying to get her into her stride, DiFranco inevitably has more personal matters to attend to with songs like 'Present/Infant' and 'Landing Gear' referring to her young daughter. 'Way Tight', a staple of recent live shows, also makes an appearance, as do horns, synths, piano and strings (possibly not all on the same song). Ani comes to Europe at the end of October.

Making the Dixie Chicks backlash look like a playground spat, the Björk vs. The People's Republic of China uproar that happened in March has taken a dramatic twist with the Chinese Ministry of Culture imposing tough new restrictions on foreign performers. Reuters report that a statement on the Ministry's website effectively warns that any outburst that threatens China's sovereignty will result in the culprit being slapped with an outright ban from performing in the country. Firmer still, anyone known to have engaged in such activities in the past is unlikely to be allowed to cross Chinese borders. Even people who are allowed to perform will need approval for everything they do – even encores must be predetermined.

The Chinese government had threatened these drastic steps to silence would-be political protesters in the immediate aftermath of Björk's concert in Shanghai where her brief chant of "Tibet! Tibet!" at the end of 'Declare Independence' was said to have "broken Chinese law and hurt Chinese people's feelings". She refused to apologise, saying that the song was "about humanity".

A passing monk had this to say: "om mani padme hum".

* * *

From one Far Eastern country to another, Karen O has announced she is to unveil her new side project, Native Korean Rock & The Fishnets, at two intimate performances in Brooklyn on Monday. Writing on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs website, Karen describes the project as "a body of love songs written over the last two years" and is quick to dispel any doubt that this is something quite separate from both the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the so-called K.O. At Home solo demos leaked to file sharers in 2006. Hark at five of K.O.'s new songs over on Myspace. While you're there, get wiggy with the babytoupee.com link (or just click here for literally minutes of fun).

Amy Winehouse and Girls Aloud are rumoured to be among a host of big name acts set to appear in a brand new online soap opera, 'The Secret World Of Sam King', that will air on social networking site Bebo. Apparently Bebo members will get to influence the plot, which has the central premise of a teenager (Sam King) secretly setting up his own record label he runs from a stationery cupboard at the offices of Universal Records. Other Universal artists set to make a cameo appearance include Razorlight and Bloc Party. As if that's not enough of a disincentive, you'll have to sign up to Bebo to watch it too.

Having spent what seems like forever on the road touring behind their critically acclaimed debut Applause, Cheer, Boo, Hiss, One Little Indian signings Land Of Talk will release their second album proper on October 6th. Recorded in Montreal with man-of-the-moment Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Some Are Lakes plugs back in after last year's acoustic detour with Lizzie Powell's "raspy coo and vocal conviction" jostling with "roaring guitars" to bring you "a warm, bracing and assured second album". The album will be preceded by a single of the same name.

Some Are Lakes

A second mostly-star tribute to The Cure is being compiled by American Laundromat Records, the company who brought us the amazing High School Reunion tribute to 1980s teen flicks and the all-female Neil Young tribute Cinnamon Girl, due for release early next year. Participants look set to include Tanya Donelly, Dévics, Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips, The Brunettes, The Rosebuds, The Submarines, Elizabeth Harper and Joy Zipper among many others. Donelly's doing 'Love Cats'! Amazing. The full current tracklist for Just Like Heaven: A Tribute To The Cure is up on the project's Myspace page.

The equally amazing sounding Perfect As Cats tribute, featuring Bat For Lashes, Mariee Sioux, Sarabeth Tucek, Kaki King, Rio En Medio, Tara Busch and Caroline Weeks (among many many others), is released through Manimal Vinyl at the end of October. All profits will go to Invisible Children, a charity that raises awareness about child soldiers in Uganda. More info here.

Speaking of Rio En Medio, aka Danielle Stech-Homsy, her second album Frontier is released through Manimal Vinyl in September. A seven-song EP by Caroline Weeks (a member of the Bat For Lashes live band) called Songs For Edna is also forthcoming from the label.

The ever-so-fashion-forward Karen O will debut her side project Native Korean Rock this Monday, July 21st to those lucky enough to reside in NYC.

The band will perform two shows at Union Pool in Brooklyn. Both shows went onsale earlier today and instantly SOLD OUT (duh).

Here are some words from Karen O about the project via the YYY's blog:

Native Korean Rock is a side project of mine comprised of a body of love songs written over the last two years to be performed with a motley crew of NYC natives. Expect high drama, high stakes in two intimate performances.

Does Native Korean Rock have anything to do with Yeah Yeah Yeahs? NO

Are these the leaked demos of years ago? NO

I think we would all agree, we had some pretty dumb ideas in high school. Consider this a highligh

I think we would all agree, we had some pretty dumb ideas in high school. Consider this a highlight reel of the misconceptions that were rattling in my head during my high school days.

1) Blues and jazz, they are good food.

On the outset of high school, I was totally bent on becoming an old man before I turned seventeen. I had thrift-store stink sweaters and polyester-blend pants, and I was utterly convinced that there was true meaning for me in blues and jazz. Armed with a series of budget cds with fuzzy pictures of black men in suits, I was totally determined to rise intellectually above my less geriatric peers. By my sophmore year, I realized what so many had already known: jazz is boring, and every blues song is the same. I then proceeded to listen exclusively to mix cds with music from 80's cartoon shows and midi tracks of Mega Man songs.

2) In cool, liberal areas like New York, I would immediately find kindred spirits.

During high school, I absolutely knew that should I move to an urban area like New York, I would immediately fall in with the cool kids. I would, no joke, fantasize about meeting with and befriending the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. When I actually did move to New York, I found the same assholes that pissed me off so much in high school, except that these New York assholes decided that the best way to pick up chicks was to be Stroke-esque as opposed to being meat head jocks. There were similar trends ideologically. In the South I was surrounded by a lot of dumb, stubborn conservatives. In the North I was surrounded by a lot of dumb, stubborn liberals.

3) Drugs and alcohol are meaningless diversions for idiots, and I will never partake of them.

This one is largely the same, except for one major concession: drugs and alcohol are meaningless diversions for idiots, and I will heartily partake of them.

4) The Oxford Comma is law.

During high school I had to use the Oxford comma in all my essays, reports, and papers because we followed MLA guidelines. I grew to depend on that piece of punctuation. In college I would be corrected for using the Oxford comma in any essay, report or paper because most of my graders followed AP guidelines. Anguish ensued. Serious, serious anguish. Apparently I really needed something to believe in after I found that the good ole JC was not cuttin' it any more.

5) Patrick Swayze saved us from the Russians.

My geography teacher was a lazy asshole who would get out of teaching by showing tangentially relevant movies. So, instead of learning about Russia or the Cold War in Unit 4, we watched Red Dawn instead. In this propaganda-meets-Road House period piece, Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen fight the Russians, who have invaded and largely occupied the United States in the late 80's. Part of me wishes that this had happened, as I would be one step closer to a lifelong dream: living in a country where Patrick Swayze is on the currency.

Bueno, agradables. Bonitos y agradables. Que a veces tampoco viene mal.

[caption id="attachment_19" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Fever To Tell"][/caption]

To be honest, I was put off this band by the hype that surrounded their emergence, though I'm sure I can't have been the only one. A couple of EPs and a series of talked-about live shows and they were everywhere. So I turned off.

I didn't want to see or hear what I thought of as a mere 'trendy' act fronted by a woman, Karen-O, who seemed in need of some valium. I deliberately didn't listen to Maps. It wasn't until after their second album had been released that Maps sneaked into my ears and I ended up buying this album.

Album opener 'Rich' commences with a repeated, stabbing riff, then the drumming punctuates the song and builds the tempo before Karen-O screams in with the lyrics. Except, she doesn't. She offers an assured-soft opening lyric. Unexpected considering how "excitable" she has seemed on those aforementioned MTV slots. Of course she and the song kick off but when they do it's with the same expert like assurance that the hype had erased hope of. There is, in fact, no posturing to be heard on the album, it sounds genuine from start to finish.

There are some weaker moments on here, not very many at all, but they seem to be that of a band looking over their collective shoulders; just in case. Perhaps aware of the detrimental impact that the hype may have had and doing their best to prove themselves as a serious act. Which they do, in spades.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are very much a serious act and a serious band. The back drops to Karen-O's are nailed down by the fantastic combination of guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase. Buzzing and trilling guitar lines inter-woven with melody and built upon by at times thundering and deftly punctuating percussion that conveys a wonderful urgency. But that's not to ignore the vocal element.

Karen-O is a woman of many vocal talents. She can wail, whoop and shriek with the best (and once or twice the worst) of them but she can sing like a tender bird too. When she stops her affected teasing the album becomes one of the best. 'Maps' and "Modern Romance' work not because of the superb musicianship of Nick Zinner and Brian Chase but because of her delivery. "Made off, don't stray, my kind is your kind. I'll stay the same.... They don't love you like I love you," sung perfectly as if on the verge of tears and defeat, it's impossible not to love.

Not only did this album introduce me to a band that can thrash, whirl and then emote within the confides of one 40 minute album, but it taught me an important lesson in not judging before listening. Though they went on to prove themselves as more than the sum of the hype with a second album they've yet to better this stormer of a debut.

I love the disc from Grand Ole Party. Get out your plastic money and buy their album Humanimals.

The female lead singer plays drums. Watch the trio perform Bad, Bad Man. Her insistant, staccato vocals convict you with each piercing syllable; they fall somewhere between Heart and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with a dollop of Grace Slick.

For more superlatives about her voice and style, see this The Stonewailer article. At that link, you can also download songs I.N.S.A.N.E., Roll on Down, Turn On, Burn On, and Radio. Radio is a MUST HAVE. It's a dubbed-out remix by The Scientist. I'm really loving dub lately.

Daytrotter offers three GOP songs for download: Dirty Spirit Rag, Gypsy March, and Look Out Young Son, plus an additional unreleased mp3 titled Next Day Nightmare.

I think the lyrics to the album's opening track Look Out Young Son, which you can hear on their MySpace, illustrate the band's overall aesthetic:

"I must be the devil's daughter / Such a dark father to dwell in me / Bastard child that I am / You can see it in my swagger / In the palmist's lines of my hands / And my lips that bud like daggers ... Look out young son / When I bloom you come a-crawlin.'"

Oh, fa sho.

This morning was a medical adventure. At 10 AM, my eye doctor told me that yes, I would need glasses. BUT they will only be needed during class, when I'm squinting at the board. Isaac says I'll probably end up wearing them all the time. We'll see... *coughpuncough*
At 11 AM, I was given a filling. Those are no fun to receive, I assure you. I've had plenty in my day. No fun.

After all that, things got better. I hung in G-Funk with my buddy Josh, hittin' up all the thrift stores, getting ice cream, weed killer, and all that jazz.

Good music I started listening to: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Tink Tinks. Interesting names...

I'm feeling the story-writing itch, but I'm not sure what to write about. Any suggestions? Right now, I'm looking at the possibility of making my favorite manga (Kare Kano) into a novel. Changing the names and details and such, of course, but keeping the main plot. But I'm not sure...boo...

What I need to do is find the one story that I actually finished (yes, it's true. I've finished a story), edit it, and get it the heck out there! Thing is, it's not the style I was hoping for at ALL. It's rather...edgy. Toward the end of writing it, I just kinda wrapped it up. So I really need to work on that. We'll see...maybe that will be my project for the rest of the summer?

I'm addicted to this Swedish girl's blog. Actually it's 2 sisters that blog together. I don't know what they're saying because it's not in English, but their pictures are great. moderniteter.devote.se

I just found out they made a sequel to one of the coolest Japanese movies ever: Nana. I still can't find a store that sells it, though. Maybe I'll buy them both on eBay or something. Bah.

Over the course of its three-decade history, punk has consistently taken rock and roll's inherent rebelliousness and politicism and made those qualities violent and explicit. Its most obvious roots lie in the aggressive, sometimes abrasive rhythms of '60s garage rock, the theatricality of glam rock, the ironic nihilism of New York's The Velvet Underground and The New York Dolls, and the raw, visceral power of Detroit proto-punk icons The Stooges and MC5.

Punk rock as a genre unto itself exploded in late '70s England when angry working class kids, frustrated with the rigid norms and class polarization that ruled their country, formed fast, loud, primitive rock bands with names like The Buzzcocks, The Damned, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols, through which they expressed their rage and alienation. Similarly minded bands emerged all over the U.S. -- The Ramones in New York, The Dead Kennedys in San Francisco, and X and Black Flag in Los Angeles. These bands had different aesthetics, different agendas, and different sounds, but they were all united by their rejection of institutional authority, their penchant for self-destruction, and their music's raw, wounded emotional power.

As you might expect of such a huge social phenomenon, punk has been endlessly co-opted by mainstream culture. But as long as smart kids with challenging things to say can get their hands on noise-making devices, punk rock will endure.

It has been a few weeks since my last Music in Commercials post. I think it due time for another. This week has a little less continuity than week but I have found some cool ones.

Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) - Hello Tomorrow (Adidas)

First off I picked an Adidas commercial with music from Karen O. It's a pretty cool commercial and the dark theme fits well with Hello Tomorrow. I like the weirdness of this commercial. It is definitely on of my favorite commercials I have covered so far.

Update: I just checked this song is actually by Squeak E. Clean ft. Karen O

Silversun Pickups - Well Thought Out Twinkles (Pontiac)

Next we have a Pontiac commercial from Silversun Pickups. The commercial, like most others, is pretty generic. It's a good song though so I can enjoy it. Another good song to add to the long list of boring car commercials.

Aphex Twin - 4 (Some anti-drug organization)

If you know who Aphex Twin are, I'm sure you will have a good laugh at this ad. Seems a little ironic to pick them for the music of an Anti-Drug commercial. That said, it is an antu-drug ad I am paying more attention too. Good job random Anti-Drug organization. This is more of what I imagine when I think of when I think of Aphex Twin.

Aphex Twin's website states:

The Aphex Twin's favourite drugs, in order of preference: grass/hash, mushrooms, coffee, tea, Ventolin, aspirin. At a festival last week, he licked a little too much liquid acid off his hand, then had to spend the night convincing his mate, who'd similarly indulged, that they were in a field, not standing on the edge of a hypodermic needle. He wasn't very successful. Have his tastes changed as he's got older?'Only in as much as I know what not to take when I'm going to see my parents.'
