There is a reader "Son Goku" asked me in someone blog's comment page, about how to install Ubuntu.

So now I write this tutorial steps for him and also those who are still new into the Linux world.

Please note that this tutorial is just teaching you how to install Ubuntu under Windows to run natively. Not install to any partition.

For new users, I suggest that you download the Ubuntu Linux cd via here for a 32 bit version and here if your have a 64 bit PC such as AMD Athlon X2 or Intel Core2Duo or above and run it as live cd to play around with it before you install it.

Okay, Time to make my first post.

If you're completely new to the GNU/Linux OS, try to use Ubuntu with Wubi

Wubi does not Modify your computer, so it's a great way to start out.

(Use whatever you want, I prefer Kubuntu.)

Now, Some basic Terminal Commands.

sudo - Uses the root (super mega-admin) account for this action, asks for a normal admin password.

passwd <username> - Does what you though - Changes the password.

apt-get install <program name> - Will, In most cases install the software you specified in the command.

dir - lists all folders and files in the current folder

<program name> - Yes, just the same name as apt-get after you installed it. Runs the program.

cd <folder name> - Points the terminal to the selected folder

./ <File name> - Runs the selected file.

Many people are only afraid of Linux because they've never tried it, that's where Wubi comes in. If you think you're brave enough to install Linux without affecting your Windows install, read on after the jump.

Wubi's main attraction is that its super easy to install and it has no affect on your Windows installation. If you don't like it after you install it, its just as easy to remove as any program in windows, just use the normal remove programs utility. The one problem with wubi is it downloads the .iso file, and it takes forever. One way around this is to download Ubuntu Linux yourself because Wubi now comes packaged with it. The downside of downloading Ubuntu yourself is that you have to burn it to a CD if your not tech savvy enough to mount an .iso file (now that I've mentioned it I'll post a how-to in the near future), but if you just download and run Wubi you don't need to waste any CD's. Once Wubi is finished installing there will be a little menu every time you boot your computer asking which OS to boot into, and if you don't select anything then after a couple seconds it just boots Windows. Before you get all psyched to do this you're gonna need at least 5GB free on your hard drive, and that's the minimum. So go now, give Linux a chance, this way you can at least seem more knowledgeable than your peers.

I've really been feeling the Linux itch lately and with some extra time on my hands post surgery, I finally did something about it.

My friend Dustin turned me on to the Wubi installer a while ago and this was the perfect time to give it a spin.

Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows

From the site: "Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way."

From the get-go I am very impressed with wubi. Hands down the easiest linux install I've ever performed. The installer file creates a folder on your harddrive. You select the installation size, set a username and password and set the desktop environment.

Once you're done with these preliminary settings, the installer downloads the Ubuntu install files, adds an entry for in the boot.ini and then asks to reboot the system.

With the new boot.ini entry, you have the option during the boot process to boot into Window or Ubuntu. Select Ubuntu to finish the installation. This is where the process was really impressive for me. The installer creates an ext3 file system inside the Ubuntu folder created in your Windows install. Instead of having to partition out your hard drive, Ubuntu is installed into this folder and runs self-contained.

The installer must have a massive driver database as well. I run an HP Compaq 8710p laptop, and the install had all the drivers for this machine. Everything worked post install, wireless, video, sound. I didn't have to add any drivers.

It also has a good selection of pre-installed applications including Firefox 3, Open Office, audio and video applications and all the administrative tools you need for the o/s.

If there's a downside to Wubi, it's that you don't get any advanced configuration options during install. If you're a more advanced user and like to be in control of what gets installed and what doesn't, this isn't the install you're looking for. But, Wubi's purpose is to be a one-click solution to installing Linux on a Windows machine, and it works beautifully.

If at the end of your test drive, you decide that Linux isn't for you, simply boot back in to Windows, open up Add/Remove Programs and there's Ubuntu waiting in the list. Follow the usual uninstall procedure and it's gone.

If you've ever been curious about Linux, this is the best introduction out there. Give it a test drive.

I dedicated 5 GB of space for the installation (more choices are available), no partition was needed and best of all...I have access to Windows files through the Ubuntu installation.

Slick, fast, no errors, no partition messing, and safe!

As a fan and user of Ubuntu and Wordpress I joined Launchpad to help translate these two huge projects in Greek with many other people.

But what exactly Launchpad is? Launchpad is a community of people, in which everyone can join free and participate to help translate various Open Source projects (such like Ubuntu, Wordpress, AWN, mySQL) and many many others. Launchpad also helps people to track bugs at various projects as mentioned above.

Launchpad's 6 main goals are, firstly to register any possible Open Source project from you to encourage community collaboration, secondly to publish your code so other people will merge it to other suitable projects, thirdly to share any known bugs, fourthly to track blueprints for approval and implementation to other projects, fifthly to translate and localize available projects in your favorite language and lastly to ask questions about software.

You don't need to have a Wordpress blog or a Ubuntu install on your PC to participate and help translate, report bugs etc.

I am now starting with Launchpad, but I promise to help translate (at least) as much of Ubuntu, Ubuntu Packages, *buntu OSes like Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Wordpress, AWN, mySQL, Wubi and many other projects which I like.

You can find more about Launchpad with their Tour.

It’s been a month or so since I installed and started using Ubuntu. I first heard about Ubuntu

It's been a month or so since I installed and started using Ubuntu. I first heard about Ubuntu two years ago, when it (v 4.04, I think) was distributed for free in schools in our neighborhood. I was reluctant to partition my newly bought computer. Vista came preinstalled with my machine. The latest release of Ubuntu--Hardy Heron (8.04)--includes Wubi, the Ubuntu installer for Windows. Wubi solved my partitioning headache. Now, I need not select a separate partition for Ubuntu. Wubi installs Ubuntu in Vista, as if Ubuntu is a Vista application. Don't think that you make a compromise here. Though Wubi installs Ubuntu from within Vista, Ubuntu is installed as an operating system. Unlike a live CD, you can boot your system using Ubuntu installed through Wubi.

Installation was breeze; it only took 10 or 15 minutes before I could log on to Ubuntu. The Hardy Heron's user interface is simple, it has all the applications a normal home user would ever want, and it is lightning fast. Now, depending on my requirements, I use either Ubuntu or Vista.

Tips:

If you want Vista-like UI, install Kubuntu Desktop. It is a stunner, really.

Be prepared to learn a few Linux commands that are necessary to work with Ubuntu. You may have to use the Terminal sometimes, and your knowledge of the Linux commands comes in handy. I will try to list some commands I find useful in the coming posts.

Mengenal Wubi

Mengenal Wubi

Cara Kerja Wubi
Software Wubi bekerja seperti layaknya software VMware.

Apa ini kasus khusus ya....? yah we'll found it later
