Problem: I’ve been reading up on this new [version, platform, operating system] coming out soo

Problem: I've been reading up on this new [version, platform, operating system] coming out soon and I want to know if it will be able to read older versions of Microsoft programs... like Word 98, and RTF extensions. If it doesn't read them, then how am I suppose to salvage nearly 60 disks full of my short stories and stuff I don't want to lose??

My advice:

My advice for older formats such as Word 95, Word 98 etc, is to convert them now to another format. Not necessarily to another Word format, but to something more generic (and potentially more likely to live longer) such as HTML or XML or one of the Open Document formats. That way you're future-proofed for a while, no matter what software comes along.

It's the same dilemma those of us of a certain age and over ;) have—what do we do with our old vinyl records, even our now-old CDs, and video tapes, and possibly soon-to-be-dead DVDs? There will always be new technology coming out (barring global catastrophe), and updating is an issue we all have to face, whether it's our electronic documents, digital photos (gee, remember slides??), music, or whatever. While you may still have that old record player for your vinyls, you probably don't still have the old computer that your Word 98 was installed on.

Think of both electronic and hard copy storage:

With electronic you could go to HTML/XML/ODF, or even throw the contents up on to a private blog (e.g., Wordpress has the option to keep your blog private... of course, you don't know how long Wordpress etc. will be around, so that's a risk... as is any web-based storage. But blogs like Wordpress allow you to export your content in an XML file, so at least the content is preserved.)

Print out your documents with a laser printer (or something other than dot matrix (!) or ink jet). This creates some degree of permanency AND you can always scan them into software at a later date if you need them (OCR software is getting better and better). There's something to be said for the permanency of books and paper!

Another hard copy solution if you don't want to keep them electronically (i.e., they are finished), is to do some 'vanity press' printing through one of the on-demand print places, or a service like lulu.com or blurb.com where you can print your own book.

And a realistic look:

How soon before your machines are ALL on Vista and Office 2007? Possibly some years yet...

Can you still 'read' those Word 98 documents on Word 2003, for example? If so, load 'em up and save them into the Word 2003 format. While Word 2007 needs a converter to read Word 2003 documents, it is readily and freely available from Microsoft.

RTF is unlikely to go away soon! TXT is even less likely to go away.

Be aware that magnetic disks are inherently an unsafe medium that are very affected by their storage environment, so getting your documents off floppy disks should be an urgent priority in my opinion. Also, computers built in the past few years no longer have a floppy drive.

Summary: My advice would be to get them out of the Word 98 format and off floppy disks ASAP. The longer you leave it, the more likely you are to find that you can't read these formats at all.

Denn schon einst konnte man per Rücktaste z.

Last weekend while working on a particularly important paper, Office 2007 spell check stopped working. After repairing and reinstalling Word 2007, and still not solving the problem. I search for a solution and found the following:

1. Go to start menu|Run

2. Click OK, then the following will appear

3. Backup the registry: file|export
Exported to a folder that is easy to locate and save backup with the date in the file name

4. Make your way down until you see the following at the bottom of the window:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SharedTools\
ProofingTools\1.0\Override\en-US

5. There should be at least two files in the folder in addition to the default shown. Delete all files except the default, which cannot be deleted

6. Close the window and restart the computer

7. Office spell check should work.

I couldn't for the life of me work out how to do this. I'd found out how to convert text to table pretty easily: select text, click on the 'Insert' tab, click the down arrow under 'Table' and select the option to 'Convert text to table'. But how to do it the other way round?

Here's what you do (taken from Word 2007 help):

Select the rows or table that you want to convert to paragraphs.

Under Table Tools, on the Layout tab, in the Data group, click Convert to Text.

Under Separate text at, click the option for the separator character that you want to use in place of the column boundaries (eg tab).

Over the last year, Microsoft has really engaged with the STM publishing community and has been maintaining a steady dialog on how they can help publishers start to use OOML and the OpenXML (DOCX) format.

I had the honor of moderating a seminar session at the SSP Annual Meeting on May 28th entitled, "The View from the New Office: Opportunities and Issues Incorporating Office 2007 Into Scholarly Publishing." Here are my observations from "Nascent: Nature's Blog on Web Technology and Science."

On another note, it may not be as cool as SSP, but the Web 2.0 Expo often brings along some mind-blowing thinkers and cool new software and services. I went to this event on the West Coast in '07, and it was well worth the trip. Now that it's a local event for East Coast publishers, how can you pass it up? Sign up here early.

I recently found a new way to insert graphics in my word documents using MS Word 2007 SmartArt functions, so I thought I would share it with you.

If you have upgraded to MS Word 2007 and have not had a chance to explore SmartArt.

SmartArt brings a whole new way of entering graphical representations into your Word documents, without the need for constructing them in another program and then importing the graphics.

SmartArt Example

This is an example of what you can do with Word 2007 SmartArt:

I have found that Reader Works will not always create an ebook file from a Microsoft Word 2007 document saved in the .doc format, and it is sometimes necessary to save the document as a .txt file. The program will go through the process of creating the ebook, but during the process the following error message appears:

Note that the files listed are all xml files, which are stored in a different location. There is an option to continue, and most of the time, it will create the ebook.

When the program does not successfully create the ebook then it is necessary to save the Word document as a .txt file. That removes all associations with xml files or any other problems that may cause the program not to create the ebook.

Late last week, I installed Outlook 2007 and Word 2007 chiefly because I wanted full OneNote 2007 functionality, which I got. Outlook and OneNote synchronize tasks with each other, and Word 2007 does have some nice features such as the ability to post to my blog from within the program. However, Word 2007 has one major drawback. It is an important one if you have learning disabilities similar to the ones I detailed in the article: Proofreading and Learning Disability: Microsoft Reader as a Proofreading Tool, the drawback is the

I had never received this error message in Word XP, and after searching and finding no solution on the net I remembered, there is a solution to the problem. Last year when I upgraded from Windows XP to Vista, I had a similar problem. That problem forced me to look for an alternative program with which to create ebook files (I detailed the problem in

I have been drive testing the above, and one cool feature is the word count thingy at the bottom left on the status bar. Nothing could be more exciting as you write a book! I can literally see my word count grow in tandem with the soreness of the finger tips. This "live ticker" of word count into numbers keeps me motivated and hungry for more!

Am at the phase of wrapping up the my book and it has come out well. I have a list of publishers whose doors I shall be knocking soon, so all you publishers out there, am coming !

I also discovered Notepad ++ ver 4.8.5, a great application that I write my blogs (like this post) offline and do other plain text editing. It is also great for XML and HTML editing, other things am learning! Did I mention 7Zip? Check out these utilities, and donate.

Am also waiting for my new Ubuntu CDs to be shipped, since downloading the ISO image on this side of the digital divide is a real pain in the back side. Are the ISPs and the fibre optic cablers reading this? I terribly need broadband (real, not imagined) on my balcony, barefoot (bila shoes). Talk to me people!

Still, hey life is truly phenomenal! Am enjoying it!

Finally I was able to connect to my wordpress acount using this new feature I found in Microsoft Word 2007. This feature will help me alot on updating my blog entries. Usually, when I upload my blog which consists of pargraphs and pictures, I would have to upload the pictures manually one-by-one. Now, I'm testing this application for the first time. And I hope everything goes smooth.

Great! It works Great! All the pictures I wanted to post on my blog is automatically uploaded on my wordpress account, and I don't have to set up the size or picture alignment, it is uploaded exactly as I how I created in Microsoft Word 2007.

It seems like from now on I'm going to have much fun with this new feature I discoverred!

Oyea, and I have to thank these guys for tips on blogging with Microsoft Word'07:

- En el Word 2003, vaya a menú Herramientas y haga clic en la opción Contar palabras;

Here are the specific pages for Word 2003 and Word 2007 shortcuts:

Word 2003: http://tinyurl.com/2zv4hh
