Using Web 2.0 to Increase Management Information

Multiple surveys have shown that C-level executives rank management information and intellectual cap

Multiple surveys have shown that C-level executives rank management information and intellectual capital among the top three assets in their corporation. Yet most feel they do not have all the management information they need and in a timely manner to increase their competitive advantage.
Furthermore, key employees rarely stay in the company for 6 or more years and the
'baby boomer' employees are starting to leave the company and creating a significant
'brain drain' of the company's intellectual capital.

What Tools are Available to Address This?
In the Internet, we see numerous personal examples such as Myspace, Facebook and others. The recent advent of tools such as Web 2.0 as well as from specific software vendors enables teams to have a virtual gathering place. These can empower your teams for special projects, sales, design, engineering, manufacturing, finance, etc. to collaborate. This is useful if they are in one corporate location, but even more powerful when these teams are geographically dispersed.
These social network software tools also enable multiple security levels that are commensurate with your ERP and data security policies. As with any information system, careful attention should be given to security of social networks, especially when they are implemented for external/consumer focus.
This leads to another topic: externally-focused social networks. Consider the example of a medical device manufacturer that creates a social network that allows their consumers (physicians, clinicians, hospital and research associates) to see information on the manufacturers products. Participants would post their innovative practices with the devices, write whitepapers and more. The manufacturer also gains prompt feedback from consumers which aids in product enhancements. This tool can also reduce demands on customer support or call center personnel.

Social networks are new tools that can empower your teams to collaborate on projects, track tasks/assignments/due dates as well as post documents. Some of these tools from vendors enable a team member to 'checkout' a document (such as a project plan, spreadsheet or presentation) and update it. While that team member is updating the 'checked out' document, others can view the previous version, can see the document is currently 'checked out' and are blocked from updating it until it is returned. This feature greatly enhances version control and data integrity.
As a C-level executive in your company, it behooves you to investigate the business impact this new technology can have to benefit your company.

“Insider trading” information is nothing new to Wall Street. It has been the cause of many scandals and collapses, but new advancements that pertain to the World Wide Web are able to provide such insight to investors that up until now have relied on data primarily from the many commercial media outlets.

The developers of Stockhunt.com have created the ultimate investment service that has produced trading opportunities that have garnished returns as high as 100% or as great as 400%...all using intelligence that only a handful of individuals are aware of.

....And This Is How Gains As High as 400% Are Made

On July 11, 2008 the developers at Stockhunt.com were closely monitoring data coming in on both Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. The news coming off the major news wires spoke of chaos and doom, influencing many mutual funds and investors to sell their shares at any level, as low as $4 and $7 respectively.

Where others see desperation Stockhunt.com sees opportunity! Immediately the developers of Stockhunt.com began using proprietary data-mining technology and human-powered search criteria to gain far greater insight into the situation and what they found prompted them to issue an immediate buy on both Freddie Mac and Fannie May at those levels. Not only did they say when and at what price to buy, but unlike other newsletters they also presented the data that substantiated those findings. And what was uncovered amazed both readers and developers.....

Independent government related blogs were noting that a key provision of the pending mortgage bailout package that was already in front of Capitol Hill would be altered in order to add more government oversight of both institutions.

Dear James

The story is serious. We have to admit it.
I've been confronted to this frightening socks problem for 5 years now, since my girlfriend Agnes and I moved to this new flat.
I've renounced to make a collection of my orphan socks. It was too heart-sickening, and the bag was getting bigger than the shoeboxes containing the paired ones.
At the beginning, I must say I suspected Agnes. Some kind of fetishism, of exacerbated love feeling for me. I was secretly flattered. But as time went by, it became more and more dubious that she could have stocked them anywhere in the flat, and her denials had the sound of innocence.
Our housemaid was next on the list. But she lived alone. No husband, no kid, and she was 15 inches smaller than I am. So what the use for her ?
So I accepted the idea of a small goblin, somehow interested in socks, and plausibly one-legged.
Now I see I was wrong. The disease has crossed over the ocean. America is infected. And I know for sure that there can't be goblins in America. Goblins come from the past, the Middle Ages. They don't speak English.
I'm now convinced that we have here the first evidence of extraterrestrial presence on the Earth. Something gifted with dematerialisation powers and intelligence (though I wonder what they have after socks…)
It's our human duty to react to this invasion.
As a French, I first thought of going on strike. Stop wearing socks, in order to disorganize the extraterrestrial economy. But as winter comers along, I was afraid the movement would not have spread widely enough.
So I propose to prepare for a long-lasting war and to make the best of our resources.
Let's create the N.Y.S.E, the Now Yelling Socks Exchange.
Everyone who has orphans socks send them to me and I will provide her or him with a pair, possibly the same size that the one I received.
The socks should absolutely have been washed and present no hole. Very specific items (like a hand-knitted sock with "to my beloved Balthazar" embroidered) will not be accepted.
The fee is a modest 50 $, payable in advance.
I hope we will so clean the way for victory in the upcoming socks war.

Your multisinglesocked friend,

HS

P.S: En fait il semblerait que l'on ait découvert récemment la vérité: lors d'une longue et pénible migration vers la penderie, les chaussettes disparues se transformeraient en cintre. Tout s'explique !

Are African universities empowering our youth or are they in fact leaving them less skilled and head

Are African universities empowering our youth or are they in fact leaving them less skilled and headed for disaster?

To start of in understanding universities in Africa, we have to look at the problems that they face. Lets me state three.

Infrastructure

Most universities in Africa used to have bad infrastructure, but with the improvement in most economies across Africa, and with a little bit of government support the standard has gone up. The country which lead with the best machinery and infrastructure in Africa is South Africa.

However sadly things like internet access, specialised software, eletronic components are either too expensive, low quality or both,

Little Support

Universitioes in Africa have little support compared to their western counterparts, which is very regretabble. Were other universities get millions in funding, some African universities can get nothing.

This results in very little research happening. Meaning few breakthroughs, and little support for those that do happen.

Quiet community syndrome

What is the worst problem is what I call the quiet communitry sydrome. This is when a community is so quiet its like they are not even there. Let me explain.

Many people would do incredible things with technology with very little money and support, just because the people who lived there were motivated. Silicon valley is an example, just a mix of motivated guys.

As Africans we have to motivate and empower our youth. This is being done, but more is needed.

What does the future hold for African universities and web 2.0?

Who really knows, but they still have a fighting chance. They just have to prove to the world and themselves that one student, with one idea can change Africa and web 2.o.

What does Web 2.0 Really Mean?

The term Web 2.0 was coined at a brainstorming session between
Tim O’Reilly and MediaLive Int

The term Web 2.0 was coined at a brainstorming session between
Tim O'Reilly and MediaLive International at a conference in 2005. Many people feel that the term is just a marketing buzz word but it really does not matter because your students are utilizing these new social networking applications by the millions. The video below by Andi Gutmans from CNET provides a technical perceptive of what the term Web 2.0 means:

I like Andi's explanation from a technical point of view but faculty trying to understanding What Web 2.0 means to them would not understand. Consequently, the main question for Instructional Technologists or Designers to support their faculty is: "How can I use these tools to increase student learning or interactions in my classroom?" At this young stage of development, there very few empirical studies that show how Web 2.0 applications benefit student learning. However, there a great deal anecdotal evidence. Below are few examples I found by doing a Google search:

Reflections on Web 2.0 tools and student learning

Back to School with the Class Web 2.0

Web 2.0 applications as alternative environments for informal learning - a critical review

At this point in the development of Web 2.0 applications, I think it is important that educators not wait for research to verify that increased student learning or interactions are occurring but you should to jump at the chance to create new virtual learning environments for your students. Keep in mind that many of your students are already on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

I think the first place to begin to truly understand the Web 2.0 world is to begin with an explanation in plain English how these tools work. The best place to see these explanations is from group called Common Craft. via FoxyTunes I've been hearing about this hoopla called WEB 2.0 from year last and at last I decided to get that on to my blog just to satiate my more than one pernicious reasons. Everyone must've heard about this kind of rara avis with these buzzwords attached as AJAX, mashups, wikis, blogs and offcourse the famous feeds and RSS which are everyone's way of being updated on the latest action on their fav sites. Lets try, if not wholly to demystify about what this fuss is all about.

The video below has Tim 'O Reilly himself defining what exactly is a WEB 2.0.

TIM

So, web 2.0 constitutes of blogs, mashups and so on and so forth. Its always been said of guys who don't try to change with the tide end up left behind. And it 'd take only a luddite of a guy to not to use the scrumptious theme of things that this technology offers. Lets just try to get a bigger pic of the scheme of things.

Everything on your Desktop:

Using web 2.o is so fantastic that you feel a lot at home its literally kind of using things off your desktop and into your browser. For instance, take the umpteen number of social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, younoodle and so on which help us to make new friends and also be in contact with our old ones literally just from our hot seat. And if you are getting itchy about a buzz word just google it and there you will have on your screen millions of websites showing you the more info. than you had anticipated and then there is this new thing called cloud computing which gives you access to data from anywhere to anything. So, this is nothing but the morphing of our PC into one big power house of information.

Business networks:

One might've well guessed by now, why the WEB 2.o is called Enterprise 2.o. With the rapid proliferation of the companies that are vying to grab the loyality of the customers WEB 2.0 plays a predominant role in not only providing a platform for online advertising but also provide solutions to their customers within hours if not months. Add to these the umpteen of these social networking sites such as Myspace, Younoodle, Facebook, to name a few using which companies can zero in on their customers individually which will help them in establishing a sort of a sentimental connection with their candies and also as most of these companies have their target audience in the age range of 15-35 so its pretty easy to get them on this platform.

Its not only this but few of the social networking sites can even land you a job. Sites like Younoodle and LinkedIn have these resume posting kind of things which a really helpful according to a survey. So, the age where in social networking was for fun or when you might get chided for is a passe and now its vice-versa.

This has also laid a platform for a two-way communication as the CEOs and the top dogs of various organizations are burning in their time to get personal with their customers.

Blogging:

If there is anything that has really revolutionized the internet age is Blogging. Everyone seems to be so smitten by this that you can hardly find any site or for that matter any guy addicted to this wired thing not really having this four letter word in his profile and then add to that various incentives being provided for merely eking out yourself on to the wires that many are just taking this not only as a passion but also as a profession. Log into any site and you will find the employees hitting on the keyboard on multifarious issues ranging from the work culture to the recent movie they've been to. Being a passionate blogger myself I'm pretty glad that many companies are actually allowing their employees to blog which is quite contrasting to some companies. I'm pretty happy my company encourages blogging and has indeed recently started a blog to get closer to students.

The proliferation of the blogging sites has seen the growth of wikis which is being advocated by many corporates.

Hacker-Proof:

Many are still quite pessimistic about the way the technology is being used. On one side it is quite intimidating to think about the caveats of hackers and on the other side if left behind it 'd just be to our own peril. So, everyone is just tending to take on the latter route as the threat of hackers is perennial. Though they are quite concomitant security related issues getting surfaced as time moves on everyone is just as ready as to take on the risk than being edged out by their rivals on the techie front. So, that's a huge gain point for these sort of services.

And as few companies are still staring into the blue on porting onto web 2.0 the many of the geeky companies who've helped themselves away from the luddites have suddenly found themselves caught in the eye of another technological storm called web 3.0.

Web 3.0 is defined as the creation of high-quality content and services produced by gifted individuals using Web 2.0 technology as an enabling platform.

Web 3.0 if simplified is nothing but a slight improvement over web 2.0.

In precise terms its a spin-off from the head of Nova Spivack whose Radar Networks is trying to upset another giant. The first product off the radar is the Twine, a tool for collecting and organizing data which is pretty hatke from Google.

An example of how Twine works: A user uploads a text document to their Twine account. Twine then parses the document to find the words with meaning — names, places, concepts and so forth. Those terms become tags, which the person can use to access related information.

Twine’s underlying technology gives the computer a measure of intelligence. Using tags, a computer can distinguish between, say, a reference to the kind of bird that flies and the kind that flips people off. Once it has, it can give users a wealth of other information, drawn from their own accumulated knowledge base, other users and the outside internet. Where Google crawls the entire web and ultimately pollutes your search results with different kinds of “birds,” Radar picks from a smaller universe of sources and tries to automatically discard the ones you don’t want. Having said that, the search is more stream lined when compared to Google as you don't have to google through a chiliad of sites.

As the companies gear up for web 3.0 I'm quite periliously trying to wade myself through all these technological revolutions and thus trying to see myself clear off these things. Yeah OK! I can hear someone calling me a luddite!
