When I first got online many moons ago, the whole technology thing amazed me.  It was exciting to know I could chat and “meet” folks from all over the world as well as pick up information about almost anything.

The Internet was amazing in itself. You could find out information about places, people, lifestyles, news and of course technology just with the click of a mouse.  The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn.  It lead me to many discoveries and eventually to my last place of employment where I worked at an elementary school running a computer lab and giving tech support to the staff.  What I knew about technology was miniscule compared to our district tech staff and I was still learning more every day and eager to learn more.

Aside from work, mostly I was drawn to what’s now known as social networking sites.  In the beginnings there were just chat programs and chat rooms. One now defunct chat site I used was called PowWow.  Those chat sites eventually evolved into social networking sites because it was what people wanted.  I really enjoy meeting and talking with people so I was right there as well. 

When video chatting became available I jumped on another bandwagon.  Video chatting is so much better than just text chatting where you had no true idea what someone looked like, only what they presented themselves as.  With a video Webcam, you could actually see a person and their reactions in real-time.

The early video chat sites were quite slow.  Most of us were using phone lines (known as a dial-up connection) for our connections to the Internet.  Now many of us have DSL or some other fast connection and you can see the blinks, smiles, waves and yawns of others on camera.

One video chat site I belonged to used a software program, called CuSeeme.  Gosh that was fun being in a chat room talking via our keyboards to many folks at once all on camera.  There was a group of twenty or more folks I became friends with.  Eventually they began having group get-togethers and the members could meet other members in real life.  I was lucky enough to get to a couple of the gatherings and I’ve kept in touch with several.  Sadly, that video chat room closed and we all went our separate ways but I’m glad I was able to meet so many of the people that were frequent visitors to that chat room.

After the CuSeeme chat room closed I wandered a bit and landed in a few different social networking sites.  It’s not quite the same as the video chat sites but it’s a place to connect with others.  One major problem with social networking sites is that you aren’t quite sure if the person is who he or she claims to be.  Seems it’s back to the drawing board where text chat began.

Some of the social networking sites are good, some not so good and some are just plain awful.  It’s all in what an individual likes I suppose.

I don’t remember why I joined MySpace, probably because someone invited me to use it.  These sites encourage members to invite friends.  I created an account that I still use today but I don’t really care for MySpace.  One of the biggest problems is the frequent “An unexpected error has occurred” message.  You’d think by now they’d expect the unexpected errors and fix it so they don’t occur.  That famous “unexpected error” would most likely occur just as you finished typing out a long blog entry and you lost the entire thing.

Another social networking site I had been invited to was a place called, SWYDM which stood for So Would You Do Me.  Well I wasn’t interested in “doing” anyone but it seemed like a good interactive Website.  It wasn’t long and I had increased my “friends” list.  There were many good people on that website and it’s where I got interested in writing a journal.  Eventually the term “journal” was replaced with “blog”.  Blog is such a strange word but by then I was addicted to writing in my “blog”.

Eventually the owner of the Website changed the name to Reezle.  While it was an adult Website, the owner didn’t like having to explain to family and friends what the acronym SWYDM stood for.

I became friends with many including the Website owner.  As it turns out he lived not too far from me and I met him two or three times.  Word of mouth had it that he was strange but I only saw him as an intelligent friend.  Little did I know that one day he’d turn on me in a despicable manner.

One day just before I logged into that Website I had received a message from a friend asking me why I deleted my account.  I replied, “Excuse me? I haven’t deleted my account.”  She replied that I was no longer there.  Sure enough, I tried to log in and discovered that I didn’t exist.

Just before my disappearance, the Website owner had attacked me publically.  He knew I didn’t agree with his pursuing and blatant flirting with a certain young female (also a member of Reezle and a friend of mine).  In my mind, a Website owner should never become personally involved with its members.

I wrote about my feelings on this on a personal blog site (I didn’t say anything about it on Reezle or for that matter, I hadn’t mentioned that blog to anyone.)  In searching for dirt about me the Reezle Website owner came across my other blog.  He tried to discredit and humiliate me by posting my personal blog publically on Reezle.

A couple of days before I discovered my account was deleted I received a cell phone text message which was sent through http://emsgs.com/, a Website where you could send anyone an anonymous text message to their cell phones.  Let’s see, how many folks from Reezle had my personal cell number?  Oh yeah, it was ONE and that person was X (insert site owner name here), the owner of Reezle.  The message said, “Things are going down at Reezle, check it out!”  That’s when I discovered he had posted my personal blog and also referred to me as an “Ugly c**t” It was just after that that he deleted my account.

I also heard from other members and friends that this person used his administrative powers to access some personal messages and delete what he didn’t like.  It’s been nearly two years now and while I’ve moved on, I shall never forgive nor forget what that Website owner did to me.

After my account was deleted and other Reezle members found out what happened they began to leave the Website too.  Soon the site owner blocked anyone from leaving; he was losing too many members.  Eventually people I knew were able to delete their accounts but it took months before he enabled the “delete my account” function again.

From what I hear, the Reezle Website has been struggling ever since.  It may have even reverted to the original name of SWYDM.  The site owner is trying to revitalize the Website.  Personally, I could care less and I hope the Website fails miserably.  I’ve never been attacked as that site owner did to me.  For four years I was a paying member and suddenly found I didn’t exist.  I doubt that I’ll ever pay for membership on a Website again.

Of course you’ve heard about Facebook, who hasn’t?  That’s another social networking site with several problems.  For one, I’m not so crazy about the information about my actions being publically listed to anyone.

Most of my friends from that Reezle Website previously discussed also found me on Facebook.  It’s nice to know I’m still respected, loved and cared about.  These are really good people. J

Facebook seems totally pointless but it’s a place to hang out. Facebook has several applications like programs within a Website and of course they want you to invite others to use any applications you use.  The best part is that you can ignore invites or if you do accept, you can later delete the ones you don’t care about.

Facebook’s major problems are the applications that fail often and you’re given the message, “This application has some kinks in it, it’s been reported, if you keep receiving this message come back in a day or two”.  Sheesh….over and over you run into that error message.  Facebook seems full of “kinks” and errors.

Facebook recently created the “New Facebook” with a whole new look.  Despite complaints from members they went ahead with the “New” look.  Personally I find it cumbersome but what can you do?

I don’t have a lot of interactions with others but the games and applications I’ve added are a way to pass the time.

Both MySpace and Facebook are loaded with ads.  They need the ads for sponsors to keep the sites running but I would bet that most of us would be happy if they were ad free.

I meant to write about both good and bad social networking sites, but I’ve yet to come across a really good one.

That’s about all I have to say and remember, these are my personal experiences, thoughts and reflections, and you will need to come to your own conclusions about any Websites you access.

RockeTalk is voice chat application, right? People use their voices so why the chat lingo? Hey- voice rules. With voice there come emotions, the nuances and more. And there are no language barriers- people don’t need to learn to text using English characters while the text reads in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Tamil or or.. Swahili. And voice is so much more fun. 

So… why am I doing this? Coz (because) I realize that there is a time and place for text only- like when you are sitting with your parents or the back row of the classroom, or in the room you share with two others who are sleeping or even worse- studying, etc. You just have to use text.

But with text comes a whole new language you got to learn- a language made up of ‘lol’, ‘ty’, ‘ne1’ etc. We can’t ignore the fact that we live in times when online chat and text messaging are the 'normal' ways of interacting with others- times when 'ty' and 'np' have started making casual and regular appearances in those rare face-to-face conversation. Heck- I've even seen resumes sprinkled with little smilies (emoticons) and 'tyvm'.  Even whole books written in IM conversations- 'TTYL', 'TTFN', 'L8r, G8r' are a true reflection of the times we live in.

Even though RockeTalk is all about voice chat with voice (duh), pictures and videos, here are some terms you should know anyway- even on RockeTalk:

Skype 4.0 beta 2 (download when available) has done a lot of growing since the first beta for Windows rolled out this past June. While that release showed some success reorganizing Skype's services, we predicted that folks would protest the gawky layout. We were right.

If you don't like the new look, you can now switch to Skype's classic view.

The ability to switch into the classic compact view is one concession to user demand that shows up in Skype 4.0 beta 2. Now you can toggle between the expanded default view that fuses the contact list and active conversation, and the traditional view, which breaks them into separate windows. This change definitely improves the way users will experience this version of the VoIP calling application, though we think it's something Skype should have implemented from the start.

Skype envisions a less cluttered version 4.0 that's easier for novices to pick up without any prior experience. Skype also wants the redesign to unearth functions other than VoIP calling to get more people placing video calls, using Skype's IM, and buying credit for its premium PC-to-landline calling and texting plan, Skype Out.

According to Skype's product manager for Windows, Michael Bartlett, the changes have been mostly successful, though people aren't glomming on to IM like Skype had hoped, and the application still doesn't have everything users have been asking for.

Still, Skype 4.0 beta 2 answers requests to instate an optional compact view, notifications for missed calls and incoming messages, and the ability to group contacts together. Besides switching views, you'll be able to resize most elements within the program window by dragging them, your profile photo or the size of the video screen on a video call included. Both are welcome additions that grant you more control over Skype's display.

Since users complained of missing too many messages in 4.0 beta 1, the second beta now displays an orange notification icon in your system tray whenever you receive a new message. A panel will also light up in the app's conversation window.

In other changes, the ability to simply drag and drop files into the conversation window has returned. So has the feature to organize contacts into groups, though the treatment differs in Skype 4.0 beta 2. Skype will honor any groups you've previously established (like coworkers), but also includes categories based on status, such as who is currently online, who you've recently contacted, and who you're trying to add as a friend. We don't personally find all these categories relevant, but you can easily delete any you don't want and create your own in the contacts tab. We give Skype kudos for letting us populate categories by dragging and dropping in names from the master list.

Skype 4.0 beta has really shaped up in this release, adding many features that usefully let the caller customize the display. Yet the work isn't done. Skype plans to release one more beta before Skype 4.0 is deemed ready for prime time, and it will include call history, birthday reminders, and public chats, plus other changes that beta users will demand in chorus.

It's interesting that Skype choses to release three betas to users' scrutiny before unveiling the final version. The tactic is one we've just seen with well-established communications appYahoo Messenger, which just released version 9.0 after two public beta cycles, and with Windows Live Messenger beta, which advertises the competing messenger's new look. It could be risky laying out a rough draft of your software that's inevitably flawed, but in terms of starting a discussion with users and gaining valuable market research for free, it seems to be working just fine.
