This feature highlights a number of meteor showers, comets and asteroids which are visible during the month of October 2008.

Planets

Venus is the very bright "star" close to the southwestern horizon for an hour or so after sunset. When it is above the horizon, it is the brightest "star" in the sky.

Jupiter is located in the constellation of Sagittarius. At the beginning of the month, Jupiter starts the night almost due south in the southern part of the sky. As the night progresses, it slowly moves to the west and sets around 11 pm local time. By Halloween, Jupiter starts the night low in the southwestern sky and sets around 9 pm. Jupiter is fainter than Venus but brighter than any star.

Saturn is located low in the east just before sunrise. It is as bright as many of the brightest stars.

Mercury is too close to the Sun at the beginning of the month. By the mid-month, it will become observable as a bright "star" low in the ESE sky just before sunrise. It reaches the best time for observation on Oct 22 when it is furthest from the Sun. It will continue to be observable for the rest of the month as it slowly drops towards the horizon.

Mars is too close to the Sun to be seen.

Meteors

October sees a number of meteor showers including one of the year's best, the Orionids.

Sporadic Meteors

Sporadic meteors are not part of any known meteor shower. They represent the background flux of meteors. Except for the few days per year when a major shower is active, most meteors that are observed are sporadics. This is especially true for meteors observed during the evening. During October, ten (10) or so Sporadic meteors can be observed per hour from a dark moonless sky.

Major Meteor Showers

Orionids (ORI)

The Orionids are the best shower during the month of October. When you see an Orionid meteor, you are seeing small pieces of Halley's Comet which were released thousands of years ago. The Eta Aquarids of May are also from Comet 1P/Halley.

This shower is active from Oct 3 to Nov 11 with a broad peak between Oct 18 and 24. They radiate from northern Orion. During their peak, rates can be as high as 30-100 meteors per hour. Last year rates reached 70 meteors per hour and similar circumstances are predicted for this year with the best time being the morning of Oct 19 (for the US). However, a bright quarter Moon will wash out many of the fainter meteors resulting in smaller rates. Much of this year's ORI meteors were released by Comet Halley between 1265 BC and 910 BC (for some points of reference, the Trojan War took place around 1200 BC and King David ruled around 1000 BC).

Minor Meteor Showers

Minor showers produce so few meteors that they are barely noticeable above the background of regular meteors.

Northern and Southern Taurids (NTA/STA)

The Taurids never produce more than ~5 meteors per hour. They make up for their low rates by being active for over two months and by producing many bright fireballs. Their fireballs are more apparent to the average observer because, unlike most meteor showers, the Taurids are observable all night long rather than just in the morning. They are active for the entire month of October with activity slowly building as the month progresses. Though named after the constellation of Taurus, the Taurids radiate from the constellation of Aries for most of October.

The Taurids are produced by Comet 2P/Encke. Encke is an enigmatic object with the shortest period for any known comet at 3.3 years. First observed in 1786, it has been observed over ~60 orbits and has been seen every year since 1993.

Delta Aurigids (DAU)

Until a few years ago, the September Perseids and the Delta Aurigids were considered part of the same shower. Analysis of the orbits of their meteors suggested that there are in fact two overlapping showers each originating from a different unknown long-period comet. Like the SPEs, this minor shower usually produces no more than ~3 meteors per hour at its maximum. There is some disagreement as to when this shower is active. Naked eye observations over the past few decades suggest a period of activity from Sept 18 through Oct 10 with a broad peak between Sept 23 and Oct 3. Recent video data finds a later period of activity between Oct 6 and 12 with no obvious peak. The DAUs radiate from the northern part of the constellation of Auriga just to the north of the bright star Capella.

October Camelopardalids (OCT)

This is a new shower first recognized in 2005, though sightings as early as 1902 have been recorded. A few OCAs are observable between Oct 1 and 10. The vast majority of meteors occur during a short ~2 hour span at the time of peak activity. This year's peak is predicted to occur within a few hours of ~14:00 UT (7:00 am PDT) on October 5. Unless the peak comes early it will occur after sunrise for observers in the western US. The peak time suggests a nice, but short, shower may be visible across the northern Pacific basin and in northeastern Asia. Since Camelopardalis is a far northern constellation, this shower is not visible from the Southern Hemisphere.

Draconids (Giacobinids) (GIA)

The Draconids have produced some of the highest rates of meteor activity in history. In both 1933 and 1946 rates were greater than 10,000 meteors per hour. Impressive rates of greater than 500 meteors per hour were also observed in 1952, 1985 and 1998. Unfortunately, this shower barely produces any meteors in non-storm years. What will this year hold in store? There are no predictions for any enhanced activity this year but we won't know for sure unless we watch. This is another shower only observable from the Northern Hemisphere. It radiates from the constellation of Draco.

The Draconids are also known as the Giacobinids because they are produced by Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. This comet was discovered by the same late 19th/early 20th century astronomer who found the recently re-discovered Comet 205P/Giacobini.

Epsilon Geminids (EGE)

This is an early morning shower which radiates from the constellation Gemini. It is visible between Oct 5 and 22 with a peak on Oct 14. At its best, only about 2 meteors per hour are visible.

Leo Minorids(LEO)

Yet another early morning shower, this time radiating from Leo Minor, a faint constellation just north of Leo. It is visible between Oct 17 and 27 with a maximum rate of only ~2 meteors per hour occurring on Oct 24.

Additional information on these showers and other minor showers not included here can be found at the following sites: Robert Lunsford's Meteor Activity Outlook, Wayne Hally's and Mark Davis's NAMN Notes, and the International Meteor Organization's 2008 Meteor Shower Calendar.

Comets

Naked Eye Comets

There are no comets bright enough to be seen without binoculars or a telescope.

Binocular Comets

Comet C/2008 A1 (McNaught)

Comet McNaught is a long-period comet that will pass closest to the Sun on Sept 29 at a distance of 1.07 AU (100 million miles or 160 million km). It was the first comet discovered in 2008 having been found by Robert McNaught of the Siding Spring Survey back on Jan 10. It was McNaught's 43rd comet discovery.

Since discovery this comet could only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere. This month it moves rapidly to the north and is easily visible from the Northern Hemisphere by mid-month. During October, the comet travels through the constellations of Libra and Ophiuchus. The comet is as bright as it is going to get at magnitude 6.5. A comet of this brightness can be seen in binoculars or a small telescope.

A finder chart for Comet McNaught can be found at Comet Chasing.

Small Telescope Comets

Comet 6P/d'Arrest

Comet 6P/d'Arrest was one of the first short-period comets to be observed. First seen by the Frenchman Philippe de la Hire in 1678, the comet was definitively discovered by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest of Germany on 1851 June 28.

Comet d'Arrest is in a short-period orbit with a period of 6.5 years. It passed closest to the Sun back on Aug 14 at a distance of 1.35 AU (125 million miles or 200 million km). Comet d'Arrest starts the month in the southern constellation of Grus before entering Sculptor near months end. The comet is a very difficult object for observers in the Northern Hemisphere. With a brightness of magnitude 8.5 it will require a telescope to be seen though observers at very dark sites may be able to see it in binoculars.

A finder chart for Comet d'Arrest can be found at Comet Chasing.

A nice collection of images can be found at the VdS-Fachgruppe Kometen (Comet Section of Germany) and Seiichi Yoshida's Comet Homepage.

Asteroids

Binocular and Small Telescope Asteroids

(1) Ceres

Ceres is the biggest asteroid in the Main Belt with a diameter of 585 miles or 975 km. It is so big that it is now considered a Dwarf Planet. Classified as a carbonaceous (carbon-rich) Cg-type asteroid, there are suggestions that it may be rich in volatile material such as water. Some even propose that an ocean exists below the surface. Ceres is one of two targets for NASA's Dawn spacecraft which is scheduled to visit it in 2015. This month Ceres is located low in the eastern sky right before sunrise in Leo at magnitude 8.7.

A finder chart (needs to be flipped upside down for Northern Hemisphere observers) can be found at the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand.

(2) Pallas

Pallas is also a carbonaceous asteroid though with a slightly bluish B-type spectrum. Due to its high inclination (tilt of its orbit with respect to Earth's orbit) of 34 degrees it is a difficult target for future spacecraft missions. Pallas is large with dimensions of 350x334x301 miles or 582x556x501 km. This month it is located in the southern constellation of Lepus and brightens from magnitude 8.7 to 8.2 over the course of the month.

A finder chart (needs to be flipped upside down for Northern Hemisphere observers) can be found at the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand.

(4) Vesta

Though not as large as Ceres, Vesta is more reflective making it the brightest asteroid in the Main Belt. Vesta is peculiar in that it appears to have evidence of volcanism on its surface. Similar to the Moon, Vesta may be covered with large expanses of frozen lava flows. It is classified as a V-type asteroid and is the only large asteroid with this classification. Many of the smaller V-type asteroids are chips of Vesta blasted off it by past asteroid and comet impacts. Vesta is similar in size to Pallas with dimensions of 347x336x275 miles or 578×560×458 km. Vesta will also be visited by NASA's Dawn spacecraft which will arrive in 2010. This month it is located in Cetus and brightens from magnitude 6.9 to 6.4 over the course of the month.

A finder chart (needs to be flipped upside down for Northern Hemisphere observers) can be found at the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand.

(9) Metis

Metis was discovered in 1848 by Andrew Graham of Ireland. It is a S-type asteroid with a composition similar to stony meteorites (ordinary chondrites). With a diameter of 140x120x85 miles or 235×195×140 km, it is much smaller than Ceres, Pallas or Vesta. In October Metis is located in Aries only a few degrees north of Vesta. It brightens from magnitude 9.4 to 8.6.

A finder chart (needs to be flipped upside down for Northern Hemisphere observers) can be found at the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand.

Vesta is passing through the Earth element, currently at 14 Taurus, and we are in the midst of determining our material priorities. We ask ourselves, What really matters in our physical world? What must we include in our lives for fulfillment and expression? What is sacred? Vesta moves us to sacrifice for what we find most important in our world, and it causes us to dedicate our life energies to those things we believe to be the essence of being alive. We must honor what Vesta touches in our natal chart (or perhaps, when the aspect involves a square or opposition, we resist honoring). Right now, with Vesta in exact trine to Saturn in Virgo, and exactly square Ceres at 14 Leo, we find ourselves with the perfect opportunity to see what we really need, and to reconcile our concepts of Nature and what we must do to honor Her with what Nature Herself actually requires in order to be respected (and thus to continue the symbiotic benefits all humans enjoy with Her--I capitalize nature's pronoun to honor that Ceres in Leo energy, which demands a certain amount of pomp and glory reflected back to Her, to feel Her best!)

It's unfortunate for us, though, that Ceres is square Vesta, signifying some level of conflict between what She demands and what we find sacred and worth honoring, and Ceres is also conjunct the South Node, suggesting that Leonine glories of the past (for instance, the Faith in Science as having all the answers that was prevalent when I was a child, or the hubristic harnessing of the atom for our uses, without thought of the environmental and human tolls) will be trotted out by some as the answer to certain crises. Distortions may abound, as some seek to use the conscience of the Collective in service of their own ends ("You don't want to go to war in Iraq? Then let us drill in ANWAR!"); but, if we remember the need to move into the future, to embrace the new, to heal, all signified by Vesta's square to Chiron and the North Node, both in Aquarius, then we may, briefly, pre-retrograde of Mercury, be able to allow the Higher Mind to sort through and assess the situation.

Ultimately, the Grand Trine involving Vesta, Jupiter, and Saturn will aid us by allowing balance among the matters that are sacred, the material needs of human beings, and the social requirements of living in concert with others; we have before us an opportunity to equalize our lives with conscious intent that is respectful of the seen and the unseen--let's do it.

And for those of us who slept through 4th grade science class, or for a refresher course at this time of changing seasons, an explanation of what causes the seasons http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3077384/

One of my favorite fall things to do with the kids is to go to an orchard. Usually we're in search of the Minnesota favorite Honeycrisp, and today we weren't disappointed. We stopped at Holmberg Orchard near Vesta/Marshall, Minnesota, where we've gone annually for the past four or five years. I also realized that, although the kids and I have been on 10 or 11 orchard trips in the past five years or so, hubby has only been along on one of them, so it was a treat to have him accompany us today!

Since the kids still had their church clothes on, we didn't allow a tromp in the corn-filled boats (yes, real corn in real boats, and it is fun for kids!) but we did take the tractor-pulled hayride through the orchard. In previous years, the wagon took us out to the pumpkin-picking area, but this year it was just a tour of the orchard. For some of their fall events weekends, the orchard has special activities going on as well. In past years we've been treated to clowns and pony rides.

While hubby and the kids picked out a huge pumpkin to carve (a steal at $5), I went into the gift shop and made our apple purchase. I had my heart set on both Honeycrisps and Zestars, but the price deterred me from buying more than one bag and Honeycrisp won out. (Honeycrisps were $11 for 1/2 pk bag and $20 for a pk; Zestars were $10 1/2 pk and $19/pk.)

Before we left, we stopped in the snack bar area where we each chose between apple crisp, ice cream, or cider (hot or cold). Older son wanted a barbecue, but we had to remind him that we'd had lunch only an hour earlier.

A trip to the orchard is always a good way to celebrate fall. I suspect that we'll continue our orchard treats even when our own trees (hopefully soon!) bear enough fruit that I don't have to buy apples.

What orchard memories do you have? Do you have a favorite orchard to visit?

If you're in Minnesota and have seen Honeycrisp or Zestar apples at better prices than I mentioned above, please let me know, as I'd love to stock the fridge. Honeycrisps easily keep into January or February if cared for properly!

Europe plans asteroid sample grab

British scientists and engineers are working on a potential new mission to bring back material from an asteroid.

The European Space Agency (Esa) mission, which could launch in the next decade, would be designed to learn more about how our Solar System evolved.

The plan is to select a small asteroid - less than 1km across - near Earth and send a spacecraft there to drill for dust and rubble for analysis.

Mission plans are being worked on at EADS Astrium, in Stevenage, Herts.

A final decision on whether to approve the mission - known as Marco Polo - will be made in a few years' time. The mission would launch towards the end of the next decade.

Asteroids are debris left over from the formation of the Solar System about 4.6 billion years ago.

Studying their pristine material should provide new insights into the ingredients of the early Solar System and how planets like Earth evolved.

"We'll be looking at the best solution for getting there and back," Astrium's Dr Ralph Cordey told News.

"We've got to look at all elements of the mission - how we would design the mission, how to design the trajectory to one of a number of possible asteroids, how to optimize that so we use the smallest spacecraft, the least fuel and the smallest rocket."

Marco Polo would map the asteroid as well as grabbing a sample

Esa has an exploration roadmap for the missions it wishes to conduct in the coming years.

One of its major goals is a Mars sample return mission - a mission to bring back pieces of Martian rock for study in Earth laboratories, where the full panoply of modern analytical technologies can be deployed.

An asteroid sample return mission would have huge scientific merit in its own right but it would also help develop the technology needed for the more challenging task of getting down and up from a large planetary body that has a much bigger gravitational pull.

Not that getting down on to a small, low-gravity body is easy. The wrong approach could crush landing legs or even result in the vehicle bouncing straight back off into space.

Such problems were amply demonstrated by the recent Japanese attempts to grab samples off the surface of an asteroid.

It is still not clear whether the Hayabusa spacecraft managed to capture any material and the probe's return to Earth is still haunted by uncertainty.

The Americans landed on an asteroid with their Near-Shoemaker probe in 2001.

They have also sent the Dawn spacecraft to rendezvous with Asteroid Vesta in 2011 before going on to visit Asteroid Ceres in 2015.

There is even feasibility work going on in the US space agency to look at how astronauts could be sent on an asteroid mission one day.

This feature highlights a number of meteor showers, comets and asteroids which are visible during the current month.

Meteors

Sporadic Meteors

Sporadic meteors are not part of any known meteor shower. They represent the background flux of meteors. Except for the few days per year when a major shower is active, most meteors that are observed are sporadics. This is especially true for meteors observed during the evening. During September, ten (10) or so Sporadic meteors can be observed per hour from a dark moonless sky.

Major Meteor Showers

There are no major meteor showers visible during the month of September.

Minor Meteor Showers

Minor showers produce so few meteors that they are barely noticable above the background of regular meteors.

September Perseids (SPE)

The September Perseids which experienced a surprise outburst of activity on Sept 9 are winding down. By Sept 17 they should no longer be active.

Currently the comet can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere. Next month the comet will be visible for observers in the Northern Hemisphere as an early evening object. As of Sept 16, the comet is located in the constellation of Centaurus. By months end it will clip the southeast corner of Hydra and enter Libra. The comet is as bright as it is going to get at magnitude 6.5. A comet of this brightness can be seen in binoculars or a small telescope.

A finder chart for Comet McNaught can be found at Comet Chasing.

Small Telescope Comets

Comet 6P/d'Arrest

Comet d'Arrest was one of the first short-period comets to be observed.

Currently located in the southern constellation of Grus, the comet is a very difficult object for observers in the Northern Hemisphere.

This month Ceres is located in Cancer at magnitude 8.8.

This month it is located in the southern constellation of Lepus at magnitude 8.7-8.8.

This month it is located in Cetus at magnitude 7.0.

A finder chart (needs to be flipped upside down for Northern Hemisphere observers) can be found at the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand.

That title makes it sound so personal, but each of us is 'getting it,' in some way, shape, or form. I feel like I've become some kind of gloom and doom-sayer, but the aspects are there; at least for some of us, this influence is subtle and covert, but that's not necessarily better than when it's in your face. The feeling of slow undermining or disintegration that we can't locate can be incredibly upsetting, causing agitation and mental disquiet that is impossible to quell. Currently we have a Fist of God formed by Pluto's sesquiquadrates to Vesta and Ceres, and the square between Ceres and Vesta, and, coupled with a T-square made up of the Pallas/ Juno opposition squared by Saturn, we have a recipe for wisdom and empowerment issues challenged by external suppression (and/ or possibly by the need to make our choices and and actions manifest in concrete results), and these are being pounded by the concurrent circumstances of the destructive or transformative urges in adjustment to the situations of home, the sex life, and what's sacred, as well as the parameters set by the laws of nature, the terms negotiated, and the outreach/ interference of authority figures.

It feels like it's coming at us from all sides, and yet the issues are so muddled that it's difficult to define exactly what we should change in order to make things more tolerable. The trouble pinpointing what must be modified is in large part due to the fact that much of what is causing upset is truly outside our personal control, and for some it will consist of things entirely outside the zone of one's personal ability to affect. This can make things hard to sort out, and even harder to take.

Some relief may be accessible through attention to the Saturn/ Vesta trine, with both trine Jupiter (yes, one of those Grand Trines that have been hanging around). The social sphere, one's compadres, or social trends at large may provide a means for making the treasured portions of life, the home, or one's most intimate relationships, secure and perhaps to solidify circumstances--the current availability of legal marriage for all couples in California (long overdue, IMHO), is one example of how this might support goals and play out on both personal and societal levels.

We also have the more specific instance of Ceres square Vesta, which could see authorities in direct conflict with those things we find sacred; deal with this by weighting things in favor of that which is truly vital to you, and therefore worth honoring, standing up for, and working to preserve.

As promised, we’ll now look further into what makes Mars/ Neptune a driving force within the

As promised, we'll now look further into what makes Mars/ Neptune a driving force within the natal horoscope. One thing we must understand is that, as with any aspect, just having it in the chart doesn't guarantee a particular outcome, event, or level of manifestation; and this prompts us to look for what factors may distinguish the chart where the creative impulse to action is extraordinary from the chart where it manifests in a more moderate way, likely overwhelmed by some other factor.

It's easy to see Mars/ Neptune when it reaches a high level of manifestation in the life of an artist; a perfect case in point is artist, visionary, and writer William Blake (28 November 1757, 7:45 PM LMT, London England). A trained engraver, Blake left his native London only once in his entire life. One of eight siblings, Blake's family was steeped in mysticism and to a lesser extent, politics, and this permeates his creations--and they must be called 'creations,' as his illustrations, engravings, poetry, and prose present an otherworldly perception that reflects his Mars/ Neptune conjunction in Leo, succinctly defined as acting for the glory of God and the Self as creative forces. A Placidus House chart puts Neptune in the 1st and Mars in the 2nd, and we see this as, after a seven year apprenticeship, Blake opened his own engraving and printing shop in the hope of generating income (2nd) to sustain the publications of his personal visions (1st), but he was never able to create a steady flow of income. Perhaps it was the darkness and chaos of his vision (Mars/ Neptune trine Pluto in Fire), or the way he would not compromise his vision or action (Mars/ Neptune opposed Vesta and Saturn), that lead to an inevitable suppression of popularity. The vision and the action to reveal the Cosmic vision (Neptune) were sacred to Blake, and choices based on this might have made Blake feel oppressed or otherwise disregarded (Vesta/ Saturn). He chose to communicate through words and images--Mercury in Water squares Vesta, perpetually stirring conflict between the need to communicate and commune and the need to respect and revere that which he saw as sacred. We have a clue in Mercury's Water placement as to the driving force behind the impetus to communicate: emotion, and find a 29 degree Cancer Ascendant and a 12th House Cancer Moon sesquiquadrate Mercury as highly descriptive of the 'emotional engine' behind Blake's work.

It may be more interesting, though, to inspect the charts of those who were highly creative in fields other than the Arts, and it's illuminating to note how this aspect manifests repeatedly through families; the state of the aspect picture is often directly indicative of the impact (or lack of it) of the individual along the outlines of accomplishments in the family vein. We see the Mars/ Neptune aspect in significant numbers of family members in the industrialist/ Fiat Agnellis and the shoe manufacturing Ferragamos, but I thought the Bonaparte family offered a good example of the way an aspect that can power greatness (of a kind) in one family member can be less than stellar (that's an astrology joke!) in another.

Napoleon I (15 August 1769, 11:30 AM LMT, Ajaccio Corsica), who set out to conquer Europe and very nearly succeeded (and who believed himself to be the reincarnation of Alexander the Great), had Mars conjunct Neptune in Virgo in the 10th of public reputation and career (and we musn't forget that the public nature of the 10th can translate career as 'one's impact on the world'). The conjunction shares the 10th with Pallas, the Sun, and Ceres, all in Leo. Our attention then jumps to the Moon at 29 degrees of Capricorn, with Saturn ruling the 3rd and the Moon ruling the 9th--this man had the emotional imperative to conquer something! Conjunction ruler Mercury in Leo and Moon ruler Saturn in Cancer (thus placing the Moon and Saturn in Mutual Reception) oppose the Moon, and here is the fuel for the creative engine, the accomplishments manifesting in the 10th arena. We should also note the exact conjunction of the South Node and Vesta--whether this stems from a former life as Alexander or not, this man felt his past was sacred, and perhaps felt a compulsive desire to duplicate it; clearly he identified with it, as SN/ Vesta sextiles the Sun/ Ceres exact conjunction exactly!

His son, Napoleon II (20 March 1811, 9:00 AM LMT, Paris France), known as the 'KIng of Rome,' also has a Mars/ Neptune conjunction, also conjunct Vesta, in the 6th of everyday duties--so he likely found the life of a ruler a sacred one, but was only moderately fired up about it (another astology joke!) with placement in the Mutable Fire of Sagittarius. Napoleon II's Moon is also of note: at 00 Aquarius, widely sextile Nars/ Neptune, and involved in an out of sign Grand Trine with Jupiter and Earth. He clearly had the desire to affect the world, but his chart lacks the assertive outward impetus of his father's.

The aspect skips a generation and surfaces once again in the chart of Napoleon IV (16 March 1856, 3:30 AM LMT, Paris France). He has a Libran Mars in the 8th of other people's resources and interests quincunx Piscean Neptune in the 2nd, where it is also conjunct the Sun and Pisces' ancient ruler, Jupiter. Here the Cancer Moon is exactly trine the Pisces Sun; this can make for a very emotionally satisfied individual--so we can surmise that emotional need was unlikely to be fuel for this Mars/ Neptune. Almost all the chart energies (exceptions: South Node/ Mars conjunction, Earth, and Moon) are below the horizon, making for a nature that processes experiences and the world largely internally; but, with Mars above the horizon, we may see someone who must show himself to be personally assertive, whether he truly has interest in this or not. This is exactly what we see in his demise: Napoleon IV literally acted out the Warrior, meeting his death fighting the Zulus at the Battle of Ulundi, and bringing to an end the hopes of those who still wished to restore a Bonaparte to rule in France.

What might we tentatively conclude from this brief study? We could guess that the state of the Moon, as well as the significant presence of Vesta, could be instrumental in utilizing a Mars/ Neptune contact to the fullest. It's a starting point that may emphasize the necessity for emotional involvement and a sense of awe/ the sacred in successfully realizing life potentials.

Vesta moodily raked cold ashes the same colour as her once-beautiful locks. It wasn’t her fault. It was staff shortages. You just couldn’t persuade these young girls that 30 years of chastity should be coveted as one of the few permanent contracts to be had these days.

She had struggled with this month’s recruitment drive. “And now, at the end of the 30 years, we’re offering, yes,…a certificate! Think how lovely that would look on your living room wall.”

But even those few who had the qualification seemed more concerned with holiday entitlement, career structure, pensions, transferable skills and flexible working patterns.

Soon, she sighed, this flame will go out for good, and then we’ll see who’s sorry.

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius join forces by Grand Trine, creating an energy dilemma for many: Fire ur

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius join forces by Grand Trine, creating an energy dilemma for many: Fire urges us to act, to be fearless, to make things happen (and the fact that one of the points of the trine is Mars in Leo motivates us on a personal level even more), but trines are by definition balanced, and that means the involved energies can lose their forward impetus in feelings of satisfaction arising out of a timing problem. The value, in this combination, is in the immense energy we can put behind related choices and acts, but the danger is that one may glow with what will happen, and fail to take advantage of the available push forward we can receive in real terms. We may sit and bask in the firelight, feeling quite as if things will progress without our effort; we are in real danger of believing things will move forward on our mere intention.

As we've noted, Mars in Leo makes one point of the trine; this is the epitome of Self-motivation toward fulfilling one's own interests and for one's potential glory. This is a heady influence for the ego, but an excellent source if we're called upon to be brave, to speak and assert on our own behalf, and if we are called upon to act in such a way that the spotlight falls upon us, we are prepared. Under the right circumstances, this can fuel enormous personal leaps forward, and under less controlled influences, may see egos run amok; the difference is in what will be accomplished in the end--if there's a positive goal other than simple glory for the Self in sight, the you're on the right track.

Another point of the trine is made by Vesta in Aries. This is the energy of the sacred, that which we dedicate ourselves to; it also represents the fire of the hearth and home, and the fire of sexuality; what burns in the presence of Vesta is the constant of our core comfort and the heat of divine connection. That which we revere is represented by our Vesta; as part of a Grand Trine in Fire, it demands that any action taken be respectful of those subjects, acts, and relationships we deem sacred. If we try to act without reference to Vesta while the Grand Trine is in effect, we will experience an intimate repugnance at our attempt to violate our own most important connection to the divine.

The last point of the trine is an Earth/ Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius. Earth and Pluto join in Fire and the effect is that of a volcano--where in your life is the material world insisting on upheaval that seems unnecessarily violent and yet you know, when the situation 'cools,' that the landscape will have a new shape, and newly formed territory for our use? Where does change and transformation in your life call for personal action on your part? Pinpoint the area(s), and then choose carefully what actions you will take and accept from others, as the sense of the sacred must be respected. What is destroyed, in this case, makes room for the new. If you can juggle all these points of Fire, you can make leaps forward that will surprise you with their effectiveness.

P.S. cu DiCaprio m-am simțit bine aici si aici.

I thought I'd have a rundown of the planets (and dwarf planets) that currently have active probes. There are a lot!

First, we have Mercury. NASA's MESSENGER probe has made its first flyby, and will have 2 more before it goes into orbit around Mercury. I'm looking forward to seeing the science from this mission. It'll be nice to finally see a complete view of the planet.

Next, there's Venus. ESA's Venus Express is currently orbiting the planet, studying the atmosphere. It'll also give some important information about whether the planet is volcanically active.

I won't talk about Earth probes. But the Moon has a couple orbiting it. JAXA's Kaguya (SELENE) is currently orbiting the Moon. I remember when it returned HD video of the Earth rising over the Moon's horizon. And then China's CNSA Chang'e 1 orbiter is making a 3D map of the Moon, as well as studying geology.

Mars has the largest number of active probes. I'll do them in chronological order of arrival at Mars. First, we have NASA's Mars Odyssey, which has been active since 2001. It's been mapping Mars, as well as acting as a relay for the two rovers. Then there's ESA's Mars Express, which has been mapping, studying the atmosphere, and using radar to measure the planet's permafrost. Next, we have the two Mars Exploration Rovers from NASA, Spirit and Opportunity. Spirit has been exploring Gusev Crater, while Opportunity has been exploring an area in Meridiani Planum, and has gone into Victoria Crater. Both rovers have been operating since 2004. Then there's NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been returning unbelievably high resolution images of the surface of Mars. The pictures are incredible, and have returned some very important discoveries. Finally is NASA's Phoenix, which recently landed in Mars' arctic plains. Its mission has only just begun, so there will be a lot of posts on this blog about Phoenix.

On to Vesta and Ceres. Vesta is an asteroid and Ceres is a dwarf planet. NASA's Dawn is headed toward Vesta first, then will go to Ceres. I'm looking forward to the science returned from this mission.

Saturn has a single probe orbiting it, Cassini. It's a collaboration of NASA, ESA and ASI (Italy). It carried the Huygens probe, which landed on Titan. Cassini has returned incredible science and pictures from Saturn and its moons, and is still going strong. Titan, Enceladus and Hyperion have all been very interesting.

The former planet, current dwarf planet Pluto finally has a probe of its own. NASA's New Horizons is on its way to Pluto, and will arrive in 2015. It'll be a flyby, but we'll be able to see what Pluto and Charon look like, finally. We will also see the more recently discovered moons Nix and Hydra. I can't wait!

There's a lot of exciting science being done right now in the Solar System. But the future holds even more discoveries. I'll make another post about future missions to the planets.
