I may have mentioned, just casually, in passing, that I’m kind of fond of Setona Mizushiro’s After School Nightmare (Go! Comi). Or I may have mentioned it so often that your temples throb at the repetition. I’ll just note that the ninth volume arrives tomorrow, which leaves just one more, and the withdrawal process is going to be very ugly indeed. Gird yourselves.

But there’s always new crack arriving, and it’s always better when it’s classic Tezuka crack. I swear that the first volume of Black Jack (Vertical) has been on the ComicList three times now, but I don’t really care. Some things bear repeating, like the phrase “a genius surgeon who never acquired his license due to his clashes with the medical establishment.”

In composing the last two Flipped columns, I think I should be complimented for my restraint in highlighting only one goofy series about a school club and the surly girl who doesn’t really want to be a member. Of course, nothing’s to stop me from pointing towards Kiyoko Arai’s very funny Beauty Pop (Viz) in the confines of my own blog. The ninth volume of this makeover comedy arrives Wednesday.

And if I haven’t mentioned it lately, Hikaru No Go (Viz), written by Yumi Hotta and drawn by Takeshi Obata, is one of my very favorite shônen series, partly because it’s about a board game and is still riveting, partly because I love Obata’s illustrations, and partly because the characters are great. The thirteenth volume arrives Wednesday. (Is it weird or just coincidental that two of my favorite shônen series – Hikaru and Fullmetal Alchemist – are both written by women?)

In bowling, a combination of natural ability, good technique and practice is the recipe for good bowling, whether it is fast, slow or spin.

Here are some tips that will help your bowling and when implemented correctly your bowling speed:

The basic grip to hold the ball is to keep the seam vertical and to hold the ball with your index finger and middle finger either side of the seam with the side of your thumb resting on the seam underneath the ball.

In your approach/run in, try to stay:

- Smooth,

- Balanced,

- Economical,

- Rhythmical,

- Consistent and stay relaxed and try not to tense up.

During your approach and action, your head position is very important. Make sure that as you approach the wicket you are running at a steady, consistent speed, and increase strides. Aim to keep your head as steady and level as possible, looking towards your target.

Pull your front arm down and through the target area, making sure you complete the delivery with a full follow through.

Try to keep everything in the same direction, towards your target, keep your hips and shoulders parallel/in-line, and follow through the delivery in the direction where you intend the ball to go.

Also as a bowler it is very important to stay in great shape, as you'll enjoy the game more and perform better in the latter stages if you have good stamina. So incorporating some light weight sessions in to your training is important.

Also aim to try and run 3 times a week to keep your cardiovascular system in top condition and to improve your stamina. South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, is well know for running 10Km every morning, even on match days!

As of this posting, this has never been done in the NBA.  Dwight Howard is the guy who has gotten the closest and he still has a nice way to go before touching the top of the backboard.  Yet NBA sports commentators bandy about this cliché during games all the time if Gerald Green, Josh Smith, Dwight Howard, or Vince Carter (in his younger days) puts down a monster jam.

James White, who was probably robbed of the McDonalds' All-American slam dunk trophy by David Lee, is considered to be one of the best dunkers in terms of pure vertical leap.  He's certainly the best free throw dunker currently.  There's pretty good quality video, with slowed-down frames, of James White nearly touching the top of the backboard.  White was in the NBA with the Spurs for a brief term, but now plays for the Turkish team Fenerbahçe Ülker.

La directionnalité du matériau guide l'oeil, l'oriente malgré lui et insiste sur l'idée de chute ... un certain goût pour la verticalité ...

  Rise & fall #01 _ "U.S.A" où l'on retrouve une certaine idée du drapeau des Etats Unis, mais dans une version destructurée, les étoiles ont disparues, les bandes rouges sont rongées et craquellent. Encore une fois un travail dans la matière, des superpositions de techniques, et une lumière d'un blanc cru au loin.

  Rise & fall#02 _ "Rain" avec son trou béan et l'idée pour moi d'utiliser d'anciens supports, de vieilles toiles que j'avais peint il y a déjà des années. C'est le cas ici avec cette toile lyonnaise et ce trou ouvert une nuit à l'aide de la flamme. Les traits sont alongés et coulent ou remontent avec une espèce d'ambiguité malsaine. Encore une source lumineuse en hauteur ...

  Rise & fall #03 _ "Frontier". Travail sur l'idée de frontière qui divise deux mondes colorés, deux techniques aussi (huile et acrylique), deux matières, deux brillances. Encore cette verticalité, et cette impression de pluie corosive qui s'abat ... Une introspection du noir aussi que l'on remarque assez mal sur la photo à cause de la brillance ...

Troisième gros point "Un ressentiment : Afrique(s)" propose de parler de l'Afrique, des Afriques ... L'idée m'était venu à mon retour du Brukina Faso l'an dernier de dépeindre mes sentiments sur ce continent ambigü et l'idée d'une toile d'ne noirceur inquiétante. L'oeuvre se présente en 12 toiles ; vision d'une Afrique avant tout fragmentée, déchirée, étriquée ... Mais aussi la couleur, les couleurs, synonymes de richesses. Par l'emploi de nouveau du recouvrement d'anciennes toiles, on voit apparaitre, par jeu de lumière, sous les couleurs les contours de l'Afrique, ses côtes, ses lacs, cours d'eau ... mais aussi par un jeu de matière ses plaies, ses blessures, les impacts de balles ...
