One of the major networks (ABC, I think?) has dubbed this week “National Stay At Home Week.

One of the major networks (ABC, I think?) has dubbed this week "National Stay At Home Week." My problem is that now that the new shows are starting am I going to have to stay at home every night from this point until next spring. I mean really, if I miss an episode, I'll be lost. And since this is the first time I actually get to watch new TV shows in a couple years, I'm pretty jazzed about the fall season.

Each spring, each network has their "Upfronts" and they announce the new fall television lineup.

My TV schedule goes something like this:

Sunday: Entourage

Monday: Heroes

Tuesday: 90210 (if this continues to be as bad as it is now... I may need a replacement. Espcially if all the old people but Kelly leave)

Wednesday: Lipstick Jungle

Thursday: The Office and 30 Rock

Friday Night Lights is supposed to air on Fridays in the Spring.

And Saturday is of course reserved for College Football.

The thing is, I haven't added any brand new shows to my line up. I also feel like there are a couple shows (especially after the Emmys) that I am missing out on... Has anyone ever watched Mad Men?

J.J. Abrams. What About Brian e Six Digrees.

Estréia no midseason.
Simplesmente assista.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Poucas novidades, apenas duas séries e um reality show. Mas a maior aposta do canal é bem alta. Confira:

Imagem do Série Maniácos. Sorry fellas, foi a melhor que achei!

Temos poucas novidades aqui. Quatro, para ser mais exato. Confira:

A história permanece a mesma.

The Goode Family: Animação adulta que será exibida no midseason.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Seriously?

Worst Week: Baseada na série inglesa The Worst Week of My Life, a série traz o ator Kyle Bonheimer como Sam Briggs, um cara que precisará aprender a conviver com os pais conservadores da namorada. Com Kurtwood Smith (o pai do Eric em That 70's Show).

A série parece ótima.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Amanhã, as novas séries da Fox e da CW!! Fique ligado!

Here comes the second upfronts related post. This time it has everything to do with House MD and FOX.

According to the new schedule ,House is going to air back on Tuesday but one hour earlier which I think is not a good idea especially since it's pretty much their top tv-series right now but I'm guessing it's because they have a new tv-series called Fringe(the man behind it is JJ Abrams of Lost fame)and they're probably trying to use the viewers House brings to get the new show going.Starting from spring 2009 House will air Wednesdays .Personally I don't like this changes and I wonder if there is more than one reason behind the change but hopefully the ratings will stay as strong because this show can never ever end ,Hugh Laurie must be House for at least ......100 more season :D 'cause it's fun and hot and I like the scruff and I need to see Jennifer Morrison more often and Cuddy can get her own spin-off if she wants,I don't care.

Sadly Hugh didn't attend the upfronts (maybe he couldn't leave LA) and I couldn't find that many pictures but I do have a couple adorable ones with Robert Sean Leonard,Jesse Spencer and especially Jennifer Morrison.Pics snagged from diebacelar's lj and random sites . The Jennifer Morrison ones are large.Press on all pics to see original.

Lost.
Grey's Anatomy
Pushing Daisies
Ugly Betty
Desperate Housewives
Boston Legal
Brothers & Sisters
Dirty Sexy Money
According to Jim
Eli Stone
Private Practice
Samantha Who?
Wife Swap

Também retornam os programas: America's Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor,Saturday Night College Football, 20/20, Dancing with the Stars, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition e Supernanny.

Viva, Pushing Daisies foi renovada. Viva Lost foi renovado (obvio). Esses são meus comentários. E agora, as séries canceladas:

Men In Trees
Big Shots
Women's Murder Club
Cashmere Mafia
Cavemen
Carpoolers
Miss/Guided
October Road
Notes from the Underbelly
Oprah's Big Give

As veteranas aí eram Men In Trees e October Road (eu acho).

_____________________________________________________________________________________

As renovações. Depois eu comento:

Friday Night Lights
Heroes
ER
Lei & Ordem
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
30 Rock
The Office
Medium
My Name Is Earl
Lipstick Jungle
Chuck
Life

E eu faço parte do time que gosto.

E abaixo, os cancelamentos da emissora:

Bionic Woman
Journeyman
Las Vegas
1 vs. 100 (programa)
My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad (reality show)
The Singing Bee (programa)
Amnesia
Clash of the Choirs

_____________________________________________________________________________________

As renovações:

House
Bones
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
24 Horas
Prison Break
‘Til Death
Family Guy
American Dad
The Simpsons
King of the Hill
Cops

E os programas: American Idol, The Moment of Truth, So You Think You Can Dance, America's Most Wanted, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, Kitchen Nightmares, MADtv, Don't Forget the Lyrics, Hell's Kitchen e Talk Show With Spike Feresten. Ufa...

Meu Deus quantos reality shows!

Back to You
Canterbury's Law
Nashville
K-Ville
New Amsterdam
The Return of Jezebel James
Unhitched
Next Great American Band

É...só uma série nova sobreviveu...

_________________________________________________________________________________

As séries renovadas são:

How I Met Your Mother
CSI (Las Vegas, Miami e NY)
The New Adventures of Old Christine
Cold Case
Rules of Engagement
The Big Bang Theory
The Unit
Criminal Minds
Ghost Whisperer
NCIS
Numb3rs
Two and a Half Men
Without a Trace

Apenas um comentário: How I Met Your Mother renovada... THIS IS LEGENDARY!!!

Jericho
Shark
Cane
Moonlight
Viva Laughlin
Kid Nation
Welcome to the Captain

Gossip Girl
One Tree Hill
America´s Next Top Model
Smallville
Supernatural
Everybody Hates Chris.
Reaper
The Game

Excelente. E as canceladas são...

Aliens in America
Life is Wild
Girlfriends
Beauty and the Geek
The Pussycat Dolls Present

And we've reached the end of upfronts week (feels like it just started!). FOX gets last ups, and their lineup has me very excited because of the bump in prime time animation. Let's take a look:

Canned: Back To You, Canterbury's Law, K-Ville, Nashville, New Amsterdam, Next Great American Band, Return of Jezebel James, Unhitched

Staying: Basically everything you care about.

New: Sit Down, Shut Up; The Cleveland Show; Dollhouse (Midseason); Fringe; Do Not Disturb (formerly The Inn); Secret Millionaire (Midseason)

My take...

FOX didn't cancel anything that I would have remotely considered watching for a second, so I'm a happy camper. Yeah, 'Til Death is back, but whatever. And they kept Moment of Truth alive too... I guess they didn't ruin enough lives this past year?

Here's your FOX newness: Sit Down, Shut Up had better be awesome or else I'll -- well, I'll just die. Set in a fishing town high school, the show focuses on eight faculty members and features the voice talents of Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, Jason Bateman, Maria Bramford, Henry Winkler, Cheri Oteri, Will Arnett and Tom Kenny. Yeah, I know. I know! I'm giddy about this. Oh, and it's produced by A, Mitch Hurwitz. It's all too good to be true. The only down-sides: It's going to be animation set in front of live action backgrounds (weird), and we have to wait till 2009 to watch it.

The Cleveland Show is a Family Guy spin-off featuring Cleveland, a character I can barely stand listening to for 30 seconds, moving to Virginia and meeting a whole new wacky cast of characters! "Cleveland has a few surprises in store for him, including a flirtatious new stepdaughter, a 5-year-old stepson who loves the ladies, as well as a collection of neighbors that includes a loudmouth redneck couple, a British family seemingly stuck in the Victorian era and a family of bears living at the end of the block." UH OH! IT'S GONNA BE ZAAAANY!

Fringe is a new J.J. Abrams sci-fi series about a plane crash, which could be good, even though it sounds a little familiar, and Dollhouse is the new sci-fi from cult favorite Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly) about memory-erasing. Both are getting a lot of good press, probably because they have strong producers.

Last year, The CW brought out some heavy hitters, and a few were successful; Gossip Girl and Reaper come to mind. This year, it's not so exciting, though there is a bit of buzzworth.

Canned: Aliens in America, Life is Wild, Girlfriends

Staying: Reaper, Smallville, Supernatural, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, America's Next Top Model, Everybody Hates Chris, The Game

New: 90210, Surviving the Filthy Rich, Stylista

My take...

If you know my viewing habits, then you'll know that I was sad to hear that Aliens in America got cut. It was genuinely funny. Girlfriends is gone, as CW apparently tries to distance itself from its UPN roots and shift further toward the Gossip Girl demo. I stopped watching Reaper, but I think I might take some time this summer to catch up. It's pretty good.

What's new, CW?: Yes, that says 90210. A modernized take on that oh-so-classic drama about the beautiful people of Beverly Hills, updated to include text messaging and blogs. It will be starring Tristan Wilds, who played Michael on The Wire, so I might not even be able to watch the pilot. Come on... Michael was just such a coldly brilliant character, and Wilds played him to perfection, I don't want to see him caught up in kiss-and-tell nonsense.

I just don't think America is in the mood for more 90210. Gossip Girl is good and successful because although it is beautiful rich teens, it's still fairly original. But aren't we shifting away from that whole "L.A. is the best!" mentality of the 90s? The best shows today take place in New York, Scranton, and on an island somewhere.

Interestingly, they have no notes on their midseason reality shows -- specifically Beauty and the Geek. I love B&G and I hope it comes back, although I know Ashton Kutcher is involved in some other projects with different networks next season.

The NBC upfronts happened a month ago, but I’ll post the changes here so you can have the info

The NBC upfronts happened a month ago, but I'll post the changes here so you can have the info fresh in your mind as you contemplate the other networks new schedules.

Canned: Bionic Woman, Las Vegas, Amnesia, 1 vs. 100, Journeyman, My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad, Clash of the Choirs, The Singing Bee, and Scrubs (moving to ABC).

Staying: Everything else... all your Thursday favorites are there, as is Friday Night Lights, though not in full effect (see below).

New: My Own Worst Enemy, Momma's Boys, Crusoe, Kath & Kim, Celebrity Circus, Knight Rider, The Philanthropist (Midseason) Kings (Midseason), Merlin (Midseason), America's Toughest Jobs (Midseason). Also, The Office spinoff.

My take...

NBC is dropping a lot of dead weight that helped them survive the strike. Sadly, they aren't losing all of it (I'm looking at you, American Gladiators). The Office is coming back, as is the new Office spinoff, which will be debuting after the Super Bowl, but we'll miss Scrubs from that Thursday night lineup. I haven't yet seen the physical schedule, so I'm not sure what they'll be replacing it with. Heroes is back, though I haven't watched season two yet. Oh, and apparently Nashville Star is coming back -- I wasn't aware it had ever arrived in the first place.

Friday Night Lights will be back next year, but it's going to be a bit odd. NBC ordered 13 episodes, and they're going to air exclusively on DirecTV in the fall. Then, in February, NBC will air them. So, if you don't subscribe to DirecTV, you'll have to wait six months to watch FNL. This very well might be the single worst decision ever made by a TV executive... and that's saying something. It's hard enough being an ardent supporter of the show, fighting the network all the time to just keep it on the air, but now they're punishing us by making it impossible to see? Hey, NBC -- you ever heard of BitTorrent? Yeah, watch out for it next year.

Some new nonsense: My Own Worst Enemy stars Christian Slater as a spy. NBC soils its name with the reality series Momma's Boys, a Ryan Seacrest-produced piece of garbage in which mothers try to find mates for their sons. Crusoe is being called an "island adventure series"... hey, isn't there already one of those on TV? Knight Rider is a remake of the old series, because we all know how well that worked out for Bionic Woman.
And then there's Celebrity Circus, "A television game show in which celebrities look to shine as circus performers." Jesus... sometimes, I really hate TV. I can honestly say, the only good thing NBC has slated for next year is the new Office series. And who knows, even that may suck.

So since this happened days ago, you might already know about it. I'll just give you quick updates to the ABC schedule, because I don't think there are many surprises here.

Canned: October Road, Men in Trees, Big Shots, Carpoolers, Cashmere Mafia, Cavemen, Miss/Guided, Women's Murder Club

Staying: Everything else... including According to Jim. AGAIN.

New: Life on Mars, The Goode Family (Midseason), Scrubs (Midseason), Opportunity Knocks

My take...

There is nothing special to see here. ABC absolutely flopped last year with its new shows, so they just cut their losses, dropped them all, and went back to work. Lost will be back next year with a shortened season, starting in the winter. Other than that, I tend to avoid ABC as much as possible. Scrubs will be added mid-season, and I'm very interested to see how a comedy series eight years into its run will handle the shift in networks. After all, NBC has plenty of comedies that go right along with Scrubs, but the style is totally new for ABC. Oh, and According to Jim got renewed for another season. That's your own fault, America.

Among the news shows: Life on Mars will be an American adaptation of the touted BBC drama of the same name. Producers say that they will try to keep it close to the British original. The Goode Family is an animated series by Mike Judge (King of the Hill) "that revolves around a family obsessed with doing the 'right' thing environmentally, politically and socially." This interests me as an animation guy, because I think it might be the first time ABC has tried doing a prime time animated series. It's coming midseason, but it could be used to compete with the new animated slate that Fox is rolling out.

Opportunity Knocks is a reality show produced by Ashton Kutcher, where a van pulls up to your house, goes through your belongings, and then quizes family members about each other. In all likelyhood, it will be a piece of garbage.

So guys... I missed upfronts week. I was just so busy with finals, and then once I finished I played Super Smash Brothers for 2 days straight, and now it's basically over. But fear not; today, I'm going to run down all the networks and post all 5 upfronts in a record amount of time. They will be short and readable, and if you're interested in next year's TV lineup, I recommend looking them over. AND, if anyone wants to know more detail about any specific show, just leave a comment and I'll write a full post about any new upcoming series you'd like.

"A Subtle Improvement"

FOX 2008-2009 Fall Schedule

In the past, I've complained a lot about FOX's scheduling practices - rather than using their biggest shows to produce strong lead-ins for new shows that need attention, they have instead chosen a path wherein they waste it on reality shows or (what I consider to be) derivative comedies. And really, their fall schedule is always a little bit of a crapshoot: considering that American Idol isn't on it, FOX is kind of hoping for subtle success before its juggernaut wins the season outright in a few months time.

This time around, I admire their scheduling far more - sure, it isn't perfect by any means, and they're only debuting two new shows, but there's a smart decision that signifies that FOX is no longer being idiots about how to handle their top shows, and to create hit new shows in their place.

New Shows

Fringe - Tuesdays at 9

It has a big-budget pilot, Lost producer J.J. Abrams on board, and most importantly has the best slot on the schedule: the newly created spot post-House on Tuesday nights. This is a smart way to create a lead-in, without question - the only concern is that the two-hour pilot will have to air without a lead-in, so I almost wonder if FOX will divide it in two just to make sure the show doesn't get off on a weak foot. (Final details of the schedule sees Fringe airing its two-hour premiere on August 26th).

Regardless of all this, the show has creative potential - while the X-Files comparisons are impossible to ignore, the show follows a young FBI agent who is forced to interact with a crazy scientist whose research may be the center of a rapid spread of paranormal phenomena. The pedigree alone will have me watching, but there is certainly a lot going for this one.

Do Not Disturb - Wednesdays at 9:30

FOX is moving its comedy block an hour later, and this multi-camera comedy from Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) about less than upscale employees at an upscale hotel is their choice to pair with the rather awful 'Til Death. I am intrigued to see what Bateman, who directed the pilot, is bringing to the table with this one, and HIMYM has at the very least kept me from balking at the term "multi-camera."

Midseason Shows

Dollhouse - Joss Whedon's (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) new series has been in production for a while now, and has an episode order, so its pickup is no surprise. As for why it is being saved for midseason, that's a better question - perhaps it was an issue of not wanting to have to move it to make room for Idol, choosing instead to find a plum timeslot for it once the 2009 schedule is settled. I don't want to presume that Whedon's show about dolls who are programmed with certain personalities until one starts to find their own program (Or something like that) is being given the "Drive" treatment that Tim Minear's show got last year, where it was held until midseason and bombed horribly. This show has more potential than that, and Whedon frakkin' deserves better.

Edit: And FOX's full schedule reveals that the show will air on Mondays at 8pm, so leading into as opposed to out of 24. I don't see the show finding traction against Dancing with the Stars, so let's hope that it proves successful.

Sit Down, Shut Up and The Cleveland Show - These two animated shows couldn't be on two more different trajectories for me: the former comes from Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz and is a cast filled with alumni from that particular Emmy-winning comedy, and the other is a spinoff of Family Guy. While I'm sure the latter will turn out fine in the end, forgive me for being more excited about the one with G.O.B. in the cast. Either way, the shows will sub in for King of the Hill and American Dad in January.

Secret Millionaire - it's a new reality show, like Oprah's Big Give for less rich people. Millionaires go into impoverished neighbourhoods, see how the other 90% of America lives, and then gives away a donation of at least $100,000 to someone they meet in their journey.

Returning Shows

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles - Mondays at 8pm

Moving down an hour, and losing its Prison Break lead-in for no reason I can really figure out, Sarah Connor and Co. get a second chance. I've yet to finish the first season (It's on my list with Eli Stone and Reaper), but it's good to see FOX showing commitment to at least one of last season's new shows.

Bones - Wednesdays at 8pm

House - Tuesdays at 8pm

These two shows have been an hour later this season, but now they are smartly leading off two separate nights. I've seen a lot of good things in Bones recently, and the show appears to be finding traction (Good thing FOX didn't move it to Fridays as it had planned, although it is planning it again for January). House, meanwhile, finally leads out a night of programming - this was my big complaint last year, and now finally FOX is smart enough to realize that House's ratings are strong enough that it can handle an earlier time period and could actually create another successful property in the process.

Also returning: Prison Break, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Kitchen Nightmares, The Moment of Truth, Don't Forget the Lyrics, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, American Dad, King of the Hill, 'Til Death.

Canceled Shows

Back to You - The biggest surprise of the upfronts, perhaps, is that this series with two sitcom standards in Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton was booted off the schedule. The show was never that funny for me, even if it was the strongest example of traditional multi-camera sitcoms on television (Which isn't saying much), but that star power eventually led to its downfall - it was too expensive to hold onto. If I was Brad Garrett right now, I'd be thanking my lucky stars, because this was a shocker.

New Amsterdam, Canterbury's Law, Unhitched, The Return of Jezebel James - All midseason replacements, and all booted after a single season. That these shows didn't make the grade certainly isn't surprising, but it is a definite blow to procedural dramas and unfunny comedies on the network. Meanwhile, earth to Amy Sherman-Palladino: go back to single camera, and humour.

K-Ville, Nashville, The Next Great American Band - One aired for most of the fall season but never picked up any ratings (Plus Anthony Anderson already went to Law & Order), the other aired a single episode, and the other only lasted so long because it was a reality show, and got almost no ratings. The network is smartly sticking with proven reality properties on Thursday/Friday this year, so these shows get the boot.

Overall

FOX has never really cared about its Fall Schedule, but I think this is its most stable one to date: Friday has 5th Grader/Lyrics, which has had great success on Thursdays, and Moment of Truth/Kitchen Nightmares will pull at least half decent numbers against the other networks on TV's busiest night. Combine with the intelligent programming of its established hits, and really my only concern with the fall is how Terminator performs early in the evening on Monday.

And that's perhaps why its schedule seems the most successful - a few small intelligent moves, one new shows that I'm excited about, and all is great, right? Well, I have some concerns over midseason, where they might add news shows to add to the list with New Amsterdam and Canterbury's Law above, and I just hope without hope that Dollhouse is not amongst them. That's the big question mark, and I hope the upfronts later today will shed more light on this.

What are “upfronts?” Upfronts were lavish industry affairs hosted by the big TV network

What are "upfronts?" Upfronts were lavish industry affairs hosted by the big TV networks so they could preview their upcoming season lineup and schedule to advertisers in order to convince them to part with their money. The networks would whore out their stable of stars at these events giving an opportunity to the mid level ad executive or the reporter to rub elbows with various stars and celebrities. The Comeback, an HBO show which I really enjoyed but unfortunately lasted just one season, had a funny episode involving the upfronts from the perspective of one of these stars, albeit an aging former actress (played by Lisa Kudrow after the conclusion of Friends) attempting a comeback on a new show as the matronly chaperon of a house filled with oversexed young 20-somethings.

But the question the Times asks is how will the networks' upfronts change, if any, in light of TV audience's steady decline combined with the impact of the writers strike?

[Jeff Zucker] declared that NBC would be “much more realistic and much more honest” in its presentation of programming to advertisers. ...Fox, which still has a bona fide, if recently weakened, hit in “American Idol,” is planning an upfront as usual, but no surprises or dramatic unveilings are expected. Finally, CBS is doing a programming and advertising presentation. No party.

I just want to be invited to one of these upfronts before they die out completely or stripped of the open bar.

You can see the full list over here. I have shown below the shows I actually watch/care about:

ABC

RENEWED

Pushing Daisies – superb! I love Anna Friel in this and her chemistry with Lee Pace is just lovely.
Desperate Housewives – cool!
Dirty Sexy Money – ACES!

Lost – of course.
Ugly Betty – still not seen the new season. Where has it gone, E4?
Scrubs (ooh moved from NBC) – Season 7 starts on Thursday! EEK!

CANCELED

Men in trees - was to be expected and frankly, I am not too disappointed. I am looking forward to watching the last of the last season when it finally shows over here but I think it had run its course.

October Road - again, not surprised but I am very disappointed. This show had loads more potential. Plus, I loved seeing Bryan Greenberg regularly. According to IMDB and his blog, he is not going to be stuck for things to do though, which is cool.

CBS

RENEWED

NCIS – I am going to start watching the new series although, cute as Michael Weatherly is, his character, Tony, really got on my nerves. So did his girlfriend.

CANCELED

Moonlight - oh man. I liked this show. I am actually quite surprised – I thought the fans' blood donation drive might have had an impact!

NBC

RENEWED

Chuck - Love this so, yay!
Heroes – still have to watch this from mid-season 1 onwards but glad it's renewing. I just know I will love it when I finally get round to watching it.

The Office – do I need to say it? Oh ok. YAY!
ER – hanging on for the farewell season. I will be glad when it's over because I have to watch it and sometimes it gets too much on a Thursday night!

NEW

The Office [spinoff] – oooh, can't wait to hear more news on this.
Kath & Kim – do not see how this will translate to the US. I know I said that for The Office, but it is even more specific, this time to Australian humour and context. I am prepared to see how it goes though…

FOX

RENEWED

Simpsons – of course
Family Guy - how superb that this show was cancelled, revived thanks to awesome DVD sales and now is being renewed again!
American Idol – of course
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Bones – superb!!!

CW

RENEWED

Gossip Girl – Love it. Glad it's coming back.

One Tree Hill – am eager to see the current season (yet to be shown here) – this is the ultimate in guilty pleasure TV – so stupid but fantastic at the same time.
Smallville – how is this show still going? It has gone so weird. I love me some Tom Welling and all, but come on… Maybe I ought to give it another try. I am not even sure it E4 are still airing it. All I see are ITV2 repeats from ages ago.

I am assuming the 24 is coming back since they have started making the new season that got ditched due to writers' strike/Keifer's 'holiday'. In any case, there is a buttload of TV to watch.

Ladies and gentlemen, Les Moonves has a death wish.

There is no question that there is justifiable reason to cancel Moonlight, just as there was justifiable reason to cancel Jericho - they both suffered from low ratings, and in Moonlight's case it never reached the early highs of Jericho's run. The show was in creative turmoil from day one, barely settled on a cast in time to start shooting, and never became a buzzworthy drama (Something that CBS attributes to the show's lack of creative vision). Plus, CBS set a high standard for Fridays last year when they canceled the fairly highly-rated "Close to Home" in favour of the vampire drama.

And yet, I don't think they seem to understand how these shows, shows with passionate fan bases as opposed to broad ratings success, work. You would think that 10,000 lbs of peanuts would have taught them a lesson that a show with organized fans is probably not the kind of show you want to cancel, and definitely not the kind of show that you want to cancel in a strike-addled season that creates an instant handicap for any series.

Fans of Moonlight even saw this coming, emerging in a rare pre-cancellation drive for interest and support. Within months of its premiere, it was topping the charts at Hey! Nielsen, a site that Jericho fans once flocked to in support of their own show, and fans eventually organized a nationwide blood drive to help support the Red Cross and their favourite show. And yet, all of these efforts weren't enough to save their favourite show from being booted off the airwaves.

Did CBS not learn their lesson ahead of time? While Moonlight is not quite as serialized as Jericho, and thus won't suffer quite as dearly from the cliffhanger factor, it still is a blow to fans of the series. But CBS is actually rolling out a number of new drama pilots, and the reasons I gave for the network canceling Jericho really all do apply here as well. But, something about this one rings false, almost false to the point of suspicion.

Part of me actually wonders whether or not Moonlight was put in this position on purpose, and that CBS is banking on fans to do their job for them. If a Moonlight campaign pops up, and makes the internet and the general public more aware of the series, they could cite the error of their ways and give the show a shot at midseason hopefully bolstering its chances. Now, this seems like a strange gamble to take all things considered, but I wouldn't put it past them to try to capture lightning in a bottle artificially.

Regardless, I'm extremely curious to see how fans respond, and what CBS chooses to place in its place. Meanwhile, CBS has renewed three comedies (Including How I Met Your Mother, The New Adventures of Old Christine and The Rules of Engagement) and one drama (The Unit) that remained on the bubble, so it smarts even more that Moonlight is pretty well the only casualty this time around (James Woods' Shark was also canceled but let's be honest: did anyone care?).

For more information on Moonlight's exit, stay tuned for tomorrow when CBS announces its Fall Schedule and fields the inevitable questions regarding the show's future.

ETA: New CBS news from Ausiello — The New Adventures of Old Christine and How I Met Your Mothe

ETA: New CBS news from Ausiello -- The New Adventures of Old Christine and How I Met Your Mother have been renewed; Shark has been axed. Still no word on Moonlight.

More Upfront stuff, this time via an interview with ABC boss man Steve McPherson (courtesy of Kristin Dos Santos.)

I am so excited about Life on Mars. I saw the pilot of the British version and loved it. I'm quite happy about Jason O'Mara playing the lead. I'm just slightly worried that David E. Kelley is behind it -- his erratic behavior and tendency to bail on his shows halfway through is legendary -- and that the guys behind the recently canceled October Road are going to showrun it. It's landed itself in a prime spot, though -- Thursday nights after Grey's -- so if it can't make it there, well, it probably can't make it anywhere.

Also, if Sarah Chalke is coming to HIMYM full-time, I'll have to brush up on Seasons 2 and 3.

Scrubs Is Moving to ABC (Duh): In the reveal of what is perhaps the worst-kept secret in the industry, McPherson announced that ABC will air 18 episodes of Scrubs this fall. "Given the fact that it's been moved 17 times and still doing better than any other NBC comedy on Thursday than The Office...We think it's really a great addition for us." Holler.

Ted on How I Met Your Mother Is Screwed: McPherson confirms that Sarah Chalke is most definitely back on Scrubs for the new season on ABC. Full time. Stelllllaaaa! If she is the mother, Ted's gonna have to wait.

Men In Trees and October Road Are Gone: On behalf of all you heartbroken fans (I feel your pain), I asked McPherson if this call was made purely from a ratings standpoint. "It was, yeah," he replied. "It was a really hard decision. I think both shows were incredibly well done and we have a fantastic relationship with (Men in Trees creator) Jenny Bicks. We're hoping to do some great things with her. But even when we gave it a pretty decent run on Thursday, I would have loved to see it pop."

As for October Road: "It was like the little engine that could. It was a pilot that was picked up late and the series was picked up late. It was a terrific show it just had a very, very small but dedicated core audience. [Road producers Josh] Applebaum and [Andre] Nemick and [Scott] Rosenberg are going to work on our new drama Life on Mars and have some great ideas about this version. So we love the people but it's just unfortunate that we couldn't find the kind of audience that would make it worth keeping."

McPherson Calls the New Fall Schedule "Incredibly Stable": With only one new drama and two new unscripted series, there isn't much change at all. Still, he adds that there are 17 pilots still in development for midseason, so clearly, thanks to the strike, there wasn't a lot of grooming time this year.

Life on Mars Looks Pretty Awesome: Cherry-picked as the only new scripted series coming to ABC this fall, this British import about a cop who gets sent back to 1972 actually looks pretty engaging. (They showed a clip.) Jason O'Mara (most recently McDreamy and Meredith's latest brain-tumor patient on Grey's) stars and the series is produced by David E. Kelley and the brain trust behind October Road (Applebaum and friends). It will air after Grey's on Thursday nights at 10.

Also Coming to ABC: Opportunity Knocks, a game show from Ashton Kutcher which McPherson describes as "Extreme Home Makeover meets Millionaire" (the show comes to your house with a truckload of prizes and asks you to answer trivia about your own family and community) and an untitled Ashton Kutcher/Tyra Banks reality show, which is "a beauty pageant like you haven't seen before" that McPherson says "we are keeping under wraps for now at their request."

Ugly Betty Is Most Definitely Moving to NYC: Says McPherson, "The pilot was shot in New York. The show is based in New York. And the studio made the decision that given the current climate in New York that it made a lot of sense to move it back. We're excited from a production standpoint to have that real NY quality because as much as people try to cheat NY it's really hard to do so. So I think it's sort of funny that people are taking issue with the fact that it's cheaper to do a show in New York about New York." McPherson also says all cast members will be on board, but that Rebecca Romijn has "left the show." When asked why, he says Rebecca's run was always supposed to be a limited engagement and now that run is over. (Something tells me that's news to Rebecca.)

Ugly Betty Is Getting Back to Betty: "Silvio [Horta] is very smart to do what he's doing. I think that on Ugly Betty, there was sort of a flight of fancy that was going on there and it was funny but I think it got away from the core that really is the heart of the show. And some of the episodes at the end of this year have gotten back to that." Also, LL will be back. "[Lindsay Lohan] is going to do more episodes next year. I don't know that the New York move will affect that but she is doing more than one episode next season."

Is Edie Gone from Desperate Housewives? When asked if Nicolette Sheridan will return, McPherson initially gives a firm "Yes." When pressed for clarification, given that Marc Cherry was just quoted as saying that's the last we're gonna see of her for years, McPherson just smiles and says "Maybe." Hmmm…

Pushing Daisies Love: My beloved Pushing Daisies, which will back next season in its old time slot, is still all about the love. The ABC new-season video they showed us featured Lee Pace talking about how, "I've fallen in love with Anna Friel," and how that's a good thing because they can't touch on the series so they really have to sell the love through their eyes. Awww...

Grey's Anatomy Is Planning Something Big: "Grey's has got a big idea for next year that Shonda's getting ready to launch on people," says McPherson, but wouldn't go into further detail (shocker). "But the other shows we feel like are firing on really good waves so there's no big kind of shift." (Read into that transition what you will.)

Why Eli Stone Got the Pickup (Hurrah!): "In comparison to the big shows we have it's not particularly expensive," McPherson explains. "And we just felt like it had a very tough launch amidst the strike without our original programming to really launch it. And creatively we felt like it grew from the beginning to the end of the first 13, so we really feel like it's got a big up side… We also think we have a better lead-in for it with Dancing with the Stars." As for the big twist in the 13th ep, Mcpherson says: "That was always Greg Berlanti's design of where it would go.

Lost Timeslot for Midseason? TBD, according to SM. "At this point we still like this 10 p.m. on Thursday and we could move Life on Mars at that point. But it's also been a great 9 p.m. performer and 8 p.m. performer, so I think some of that quite honestly we have to see how the fall plays out."

Also, Megan Mullaly will be joining the new ABC Pilot "Bad Mother's Handbook" With Alicia Silverstone. Everyone wonders how Megan Mullaly will play Alicia Silverstone's mother.

CBS is generally regarded, by me, as the network for the elderly. But they also dominate in the ratings and tend to make pretty intelligent decisions concerning new programs. Let's see if they can strike oil this year.

Canned: Shark, Moonlight, Cane, Kid Nation, Power of 10, Secret Talents of the Stars, Viva Laughlin, Welcome to the Captain

Staying: How I Met Your Mother. And everything else that I'd never watch.

New: The Worst Week, Project Gary, The Ex List, Eleventh Hour, The Mentalist, Harper's Island (Midseason)

My take...

This upfront made me go "YAY" and "awwww" within a few seconds of each other. HIMYM is back! Thank God CBS has some sense left in them, because this little sitcom that could is just so damn funny that whatever they're losing in ratings, I'm sure they are making up for in TV karma. The sad news is that Kid Nation is gone... man, did I ever love that show. Forget all that stuff you heard about unsafe conditions for the kids and broken bones and child labor laws -- the amazing changes that these kids went through, and the looks on their faces when they did something right were more than enough to warrant another season.

And the new shows are: The Worst Week, which is owned by NBC but airing on CBS, is an adaptation of a British sitcom about a young engaged couple meeting their new in-laws. Another new comedy series is Jay Mohr's Project Gary, about a divorced dad trying to balance dating with child-rearing. The Ex List is a romantic dramedy for the ladies, and Eleventh Hour and The Mentalist are more flashy CBS procedurals.

The buzz from this is CBS's concentration on comedy and women. They have pretty good luck with comedy ratings at the moment, so it seems like a smart area in which to expand.
