Today, I had to actually SWITCH OFF THE COMPUTER to kill the update manager process. I could not access the computer any other way - I could not get into a console, I could not get into a terminal window, the whole computer actually GROUND TO A HALT because of this insane, stupid update manager. Why is it using the entire resources of the computer in this incredible way?

Aaargh!

I've reported this as a bug.
Let's see what happens now.

To solve the problem, I looked on Google for a way to finally kill the beast, and found that it can be removed by "System/Preferences/Sessions" and unticking a box.

Por exemplo, eu tenho uma pasta lotada de fotos de animais em altíssima qualidade - são fotos simplesmente lindas! Durante um bom tempo, este foi o meu papel de parede. Aliás, só de olhar para ele já dá vontade de colocar ele de volta! Mas eu resolvi que queria variar, para ver fotos diferentes no meu desktop.

Mas, ficar trocando manualmente o papel de parede não é exatamente a tarefa mais divertida do mundo. Então, depois de procurar um pouco, eu achei um programinha bem interessante para fazer isso: o John's Background Switcher (bom, é difícil ser um nome mais direto do que dizer o que faz e quem o fez... mas, enfim).

Ele é bastante fácil de ser utilizado, além de ter várias opcões: você define quais imagens você quer, de quanto em quanto tempo elas devem variar, como elas devem ser ajustadas ao desktop... dá até mesmo para usar imagens em álbuns do Flickr, do Picasa...

A tela do programa é bastante simples:

Mas te dá várias opções, até mesmo para quem usa mais de um monitor.

Eu acho bem interessante, apesar de só usá-lo para mostrar as imagens que estão na minha pasta de imagens, mesmo... ;p

Além disso, eu resolvi procurar add-ons (extensões) para o Mozilla Firefox, para me ajudar com as tarefas que eu realizo mais comumente.

Uma em especial eu estou usando neste exato momento: o ScribeFire. Ainda não posso dizer muito sobre ele, além de que ele tem uma interface bastante agradável, e é muito, muito fácil adicionar novas contas a ele... algo como "informe o seu site, próximo próximo, usuário e senha, próximo, finalizar". Lindo.

Sem falar que ele tem menus de contexto, e menus de contexto são uma coisa linda de deus, juro!

Adicionei outras extensões também:

-> O Update Scanner. Uma das coisas que eu sempre faço quando acho um blog interessante é adicioná-lo ao meu leitor de feeds. É muito, muito irritante quando um site não tem feeds, ou eles esconderam um link em algum canto obscuro que eu não encontro nem mesmo depois de olhar todos os cantos da página... Pois bem, esse add-on promete verificar sites que me interessem sempre que eu quiser, poupando-me o trabalho de eu ir lá verificar. Ainda não o usei, porque não me lembrei de nenhum site que eu quisesse adicionar na lista, mas eu espero que ele funcione bem :p

Duas bem específicas para mim (no sentido de que eu acho que não são tantas pessoas que irão se interessar por elas):

- o MeasureIt, que tem uma funcionalidade muito, muito simples: você clica no ícone dele, que fica no canto inferior esquerdo do FireFox, seleciona uma área na tela e ele te diz qual o tamanho dela em pixels. Útil para quando eu quero uma imagem que caiba num campo específico, ou qualquer coisa assim.

- FireShot, tira screenshots de páginas da web, e abre numa janela separada para você fazer pequenas modificações na imagem, como rabiscar, pintar uma pedaço, enfim, uma espécie de Paint :p Útil para quando eu quero mostrar alguma página para alguém e ainda dizer "olha isso que bizarro!", fazer tutoriais ou mesmo para tirar screenshots de uma página inteira mesmo quando ela não aparece toda no browser sem rolamento - isto é, com uma altura maior do que a altura do seu browser o que é, bem, o caso da maioria das páginas por aí :p

E tem uma que revela meu lado "obscuro", hahaha... :p o TorrentBar. É só uma barra lá em cima que faz busca de torrents em diversos dos sites mais famosos. É prático para quando eu estou atrás de um arquivo e não estou a fim de procurar em uma infinidade de sites diferentes....

Para deixar tudo mais bonitinho, instalei o tema Abstract Classic para o FireFox e estou usando o Windows Vista com cor vermelha, além de uma barrinha lateral com os widgets de tradução/sinônimos (prático para quando eu for traduzir um texto, porque eu geralmente empaco em uma ou outra palavra cujo significado eu não sei ou não sei traduzir... :p Além de um padrão do Windows Vista que me diz a temperatura e o tempo... daqui de Floripa... sim, eu sou preguiçosa demais para levantar minha bunda da cadeira e ir até a janela olhar o tempo lá fora, ALGUM PROBLEMA? :p

Aliás, uma dica para quem tem o Windows Vista: tem uma ferramenta que muita gente não conhece (aliás, eu descobri sobre ela uns dois dias atrás :p) chamada Snipping Tool. O que ela faz? Você chama o programa (recomendo colocar uma tecla de atalho para ela, é bem mais prático), seleciona a área que você quer no seu desktop, e ele abre uma janela onde você pode fazer edições bem básicas e salvar no formato que você quiser. Batuta, não? =D

Eu não sei se tem em alguma versão anterior do Windows, mas essa ferramenta que apareceu para mim esses dias pareceu bem interessante! :)

E vocês, que quinquilharias/programas/extensões de PC vocês colecionam? xD

EDIT: ressalvas, não descobri ainda como selecionar tags e categorias no scribeFire, e poderia ter uma hotkey para editar um post de um blog meu. :p No mais, ele atualizou a página bem rápido, e bem direitinho. xD

EDIT DE NOVO: descobri como editar a página, e é ridicularmente fácil... E como colocar tags e categorias também.... AMEI essa extensão xD

Top reports of a shared-memory-usage of 8.5 MB,and a total of 11 MB. For a new computer with sufficient resources, this is acceptable. Also on my current laptop ( Dell Latitude 1.8GHz 1MB ram ) this is acceptable on my Debian Lenny install, given that my memory usage is still below 50 MB when no other applications are running besides Conky and Update-notifier-daemon.

The only real gain using the ubuntu or debian update-notifier, is that you get notified whenever there is a repository update on installed packages on your system. Also, the daemon is generally shown in the system-tray whenever an apt-get or update-manager is running (it does so on Hardy Heron, but no so much on my Debian Lenny - go figure...).

On old computers or systems where you wish to save booting time and resources, specifically ram-usage, I recommend running apt-get update as a cron-job or manually, rather than installing the over-resource-hungry update-notifier/update-manager. Synaptic does the same job manually together with apt-get. Notice that you can simply disable the update-notifier-daemon.

When killing update-manager, and checking memory usage with free before and after, I only free up roughly 3 MB of memory. Not that much. However, I suspect the memory usage will go further down if I remove the installed daemon completely.

My problem occurred last night when I tried to launch the update-manager. True enough, the gksudo app was loaded, but nothing happened. I was asked to type in my password again, and again....

Fix

gksu and gksudo needs to look at the same /etc/sudoers as sudo does - you need to initialize gksu to do so. Run

$ gksu-properties

and choose Authentication mode: sudo.

Save, and your gksudo should work.

... apparsa per magia dopo il "update-manager --devel-release" e tutto filato liscio
... ogni giorno era un bellissimo dist-upgrade e scendevano una miriade di pacchetti
... il 23 l'ultimo aggiornamento
... il 24 sera sono partito e quindi non ho potuto fare nulla
... questa mattina appena alzato ho dato un update ed un dist-upgrade
... mi aspettavo una miriade di pacchetti da aggiornare
... mi trovo che non ho nulla da aggiornare

Per sicurezza ho:

... lanciato il buon "update-manager" ma dice che non ho nulla da aggiornare.
... lanciato il buon "update-manager" col parametro per la "Devel Release" ma nulla
... guardato il file source.list ed ho visto che i repository abbiano hardy al loro interno

e tutto era corretto. sig sob ... non sò che cosa fare. Se la situazione è normale non ho problemi ed attendo così che i pacchetti appaiono per magia ... altrimenti mi comincio a preoccupare :)

In deze post zie je hoe ik mijn ESX 3.5 test server update via de VMware Update Manager. Ik ga er vanuit dat je de VUM al hebt geïnstalleerd en dat je de updates al gedownload hebt. Zo niet dan lees je hier hoe je dat kunt doen.

Selecteer de host die je wilt gaan updaten. In dit voorbeeld gaat het om esx3srv1.ictfreak.local. Daarna klik je op Attach Baseline....

Nu selecteer je de baseline die je wilt gaan gebruiken of je maakt er zelf een aan via Create New Baseline...

Klik nu nogmaals op de host en op het tabblad Update Manager. Klik daarna op het Scan icoon (tweede vanaf rechts).

Klik Yes om de host te gaan scannen

Nu worden de firewall porten open gezet en de host word gescanned.

Nadat de scan klaar is krijg je het onderstaande scherm te zien.

Klik nu nogmaals op de host en dan op Remediate (eerste icoontje vanaf rechts).

Selecteer vervolgens de baselines.

Bij het tabblad Updates kun je zien welke updates er geïnstalleerd worden. Hier kun je eventueel ook Updates uitschakelen.

Opmerking: in eerste instantie kreeg ik hier een error en kon ik niet verdergaan. Na een herstart van de VirtualCenter service en de Update Manager service, kon ik wel gebruik maken van de Remediate optie.

Ik wil de updates gelijk installeren dus kies ik voor de optie Immediately. Het is ook mogelijk om er een job voor te schedulen. Verder kun je hier instellen wat er moet worden gedaan, mocht er een update mis gaan. Ik heb dit op Default laten staan.

Nog even een overzicht van wat er gepatched gaat worden.

De ESX Server word in Maintenance mode geplaatst

En de updates worden stuk voor stuk geïnstalleerd.

Nadat de updates klaar zijn, word de ESX Server opnieuw opgestart en hoeft deze alleen nog maar uit de maintenance mode gehaald te worden.

Zoals je ziet is het build nummer bijgewerkt naar 70356. De updates zijn geïnstalleerd. Nu kijken of al mijn VM's nog willen starten ;-)

De Lone Sysadmin maakte er al melding van op zijn blog http://lonesysadmin.net/ maar er schijnt dus een groot probleem te zijn met de nieuwe patches van VMWare ESX 3.5.

Nadat je de patches hebt geïnstalleerd raakt je VMotion switch corrupt. Door de VMotion Switch te verwijderen en weer opnieuw aan te maken, wordt het probleem opgelost. Meer informatie vind je in document: SR#1101801771

Voordat je met de VUM aan de gang kunt gaan, moet je eerst de VUM Plugin installeren. Dit spreek denk ik wel voor zich.

Nadat je de Update Manager Plugin hebt geïnstalleerd, kun je via het menu Plugins - Update Manager - Schedule Update Download.... een job aanmaken voor het downloaden van de updates.

Aspettate pazientemente che l'aggiornamento abbia fine, rispondete alle eventuali domande che vi saranno poste,  e una volta riavviato il tutto godetevi le meraviglie del vostro nuovo pinguino ;)

supposed to do, looking for updates. Another irritating feature is that even if the update manager window is minimized, it unminimizes itself for no apparent reason a couple of times.

Then it tells me what updates there are and then I have to type "OK". The thing is that I always type "OK", so it would be nice to just assume that I'd type it. In fact it's yet
another piece of nagging which I'd like to turn off. Then, after I
have finished, it does the update, then, for some reason, it starts yet another foolish small window

in front of the other one which, every single time, checks for updates, fails to find any, and then nags me to "close" it.

What I'd like would be an update manager which would just do its updating with the absolute minimum of unnecessary window-opening, unminimizing, and button pushing. One window and two clicks to "OK" the update and close the Update Manager should be more than enough.
