This Yesterday afternoon, Justin Kistner Direct Messaged me, saying that he had a spot open for tomorrow’s Beer and Blog. He then asked if I have a topic that I would like to share.

And I thought: typography for the web, of course

So if all goes well, tomorrow’s Beer And Blog presentation is going to cover best practices to make your blog read better. It’s going to be light on the technical and heavy on the tips (and visuals.) We’ll discuss simple things that you can do to improve legibility and readability.

What things? You know, like selecting the right typeface for the job and adjusting it accordingly. And, who knew, maybe you’ll learn a thing or two about our reading behaviors, too.

The most subtle typographic difference can make your next great post read like butter.

It's a great entry, but this statement sort of depresses me.  I work at a copy place, and there are a lot of image limits and time constraints at these establishments which result in shotty design work.  I look at these examples and feel slightly embarrassed because I'm doing crap just like that.  Can I even use the statement "not by choice"?  I guess not.

Please tell me it gets better because if it doesn't I'm going to get my Masters in Art History or something.

I've been trying to work on some art prints for quite some time, but with increasing stock for stores and designing all my PR pieces to send to those stores, I hadn't had time until now. Two weekends ago, I started playing around with some of the wood type I purchased from Tom in Racine (see what else I got here) and the result was this limited edition of 12 chocolate and aqua prints.

I also bought a lovely drawer of this great blocky all-caps face, which I set in an alphabet and made the limited edition below (half on pearl white, half on ecru paper). Both pieces are currently available in my etsy shop.

Sweet uses of type. Any good ones I missed?

There's really not much to say about this that I couldn't say about a bunch of magazines out there, except for the fact that it reminds me so much of british men's magazines all through the 90's and their porn but not porn approach to content. The pop-art type stuff in the layout is cool, but it's really overshadowed by... well, by Megan Fox's tits and mouth, which this article may as well have used as a title. Am I turning into my mother by saying that I almost feel used just because this arrived in my mailbox? Hey, at least it feels like I (and my male weakness) are being taken advantage of, and not the woman in the photo for once.

Also in this issue, there's a pretty awesome looking shoot with Dennis Quaid. I dunno why it struck me so much, but I REALLY like it. I think the stylist, location guy, photographer, everyone did an awesome job. I shot him once at his house with his then new wife and didn't think what we got was all that great (to be fair to me though, and because I'm an asshole, I wasn't even really there for a reason other than to make sure everyone turned up...it was one of those 'we're not paying you because look at the opportunity you're getting' gigs. You know, the usual shit publishers pull. Oh and the person who supplied clothing for the shoot was a first-class PRICK. Ahem. But Dennis Quaid and his wife were very nice and accomodating.) Anyway, this shoot looks like he had a lot of fun, and it really shows in the pictures.

This page is so cool, it's sick. I LOVE this and I'm going to copy it at the very first opportunity I get. I realize it's nothing particularly special really, but damn I just think it's kick-ass! Low budget, easy to execute solutions are always killer. Ok, that's not true at all, but in this case, it is.
