If

This is not telling you what a Ping is, what a Trackback is or when and why you should use them.
If you want that information, head over to the WordPress Codex.
This page will tell you how to do them.
The example url I use is this one: http://wordpress.org/development/2006/04/wordpattern

Pinging
Pinging a post on another blog from your post is very easy. All you do is link to it. The link in this screenshot goes to the post above.

That will cause a ping to be sent. Easy.

Self-pinging
If you link to a post you made earlier on your blog, you will ping yourself. Some people like this, others do not. A reason for you liking it is that if someone reads your old post and the comments, they will see that you have pinged the post and may follow that to see what else you have to say on that subject. You can choose whether to or not on each occasion.

Using the above url, if Matt wanted to link to that post in a later post he would use this as a link:
<a href="http://wordpress.org/development/2006/04/wordpattern/">
That should send a ping.

If Matt did not want to ping his own blog though, he could link to it like this:
<a href="/2006/04/wordpattern/">
This relative url will still link if you click it, but will not send a ping.

Sending a Trackback
A bit more work is needed for this.
Still using the same post on the WordPress development blog, you would start the same way:

Now you would go to the post on the blog and look for the 'Trackback URI' or somewhere that Trackback is written.

Once you have that link you need to find it's location. In Firefox this would be Right-click on the link and 'Copy Link Location'

Back on your blog, scroll down from the Write area to the 'Trackbacks' box and paste the whole link location into that box. It MUST start with http:// and it MUST end with /trackback/.

Now post and the trackback will be sent.

Q & A
1. Can I ping and trackback?
No. If you send both to one place, the trackback will fail.

2. I can't send trackbacks?
- your trackback might be sent but the receiving site may choose not to show it.
- check you have sent it correctly
- use this Test Blog to test sending and receiving.
- check your webhost's forums to see if others have this problem.
- post to the WordPress Support Forums and give details of what you have tried, who your host is.

Genau! Zuwachs an Unruhe.

Argentine-News. dubleudansmesnuages. atortouaraison. Cybercarnet. Flopy. Zintzen. LostinBrittany.

I have mentioned this in an earlier post: When importing from TypePad to WordPress my TypePad trackb

I have mentioned this in an earlier post: When importing from TypePad to WordPress my TypePad trackbacks are turned into comments in WordPress, but as I understand, that is how WordPress' pingback works. I have to live with that. But now it gets even weirder...for a TypePad user like me: Pingbacks are not only added to comments in the post, they also appear in my "Recent Comments" widget.

Ok, maybe this is not so annoying after all. If it's a pingback from a different site, that could even be useful. But if it's a pingback from my own site? Hmm...does this look nice?

I'm not sure I should send a ping to my previous post, but I will, so you can see how it looks like.

In the end, I can only hope that my readers will understand, and besides, it may actually entice my readers to look at my other previous posts not already listed in the "Recent Comments".

TypePad does not have this behaviour. There, a trackback is a trackback, and the only way to turn off this behaviour in WordPress would be to a) not send pingbacks, or b) disallow pingbacks from other blogs in the "Comments and Pings" settings when writing a post or page, or c) simply delete the self-pings from my comments.

Not sure what to do here, so for now, I'll just leave them on.

Recently I happened to stumble upon another blog here at wordpress.com with a post “very similar

Recently I happened to stumble upon another blog here at wordpress.com with a post “very similar” to one of my blog posts. At least that’s what I thought in the beginning. On continuing to read the post, I realized that this person’s post is not similar to mine...It is an exact copy! I have had cases in the past where other bloggers quote some part of my blog posts. Even then they always used to provide some acknowledgement and a trackback. This is the first case where I have been a victim of outright plagiarism. My first reaction was of utter shock. I didn’t think that someone would do this. How naïve was I!

On researching further, I realized that content thefts are rampant especially when it comes to blogs. Having discovered that I’m not alone in this boat, I set forth to tackle this issue. I tried contacting the blog author by leaving a comment on his/her blog. I am guessing this person moderates comments so my comment never showed up on his/her blog post. But I am sure my message must have gone through. I waited for a few weeks for a reply. What was I thinking? Obviously I didn’t get a reply.

Next step I contacted the guys at Wordpress directly. Within an hour of reporting this case, I got a reply:

Hi,
Thanks for the report. That blog has been flagged and frozen accordingly. The author will be forced to get in contact with us.

Best,
Anthony
Automattic | WordPress.com

It feels great to know that Wordpress is quite serious about dealing with this issue. If you are a blogger and would like to know if your blog content has been stolen or if you are a victim like me then follow these steps:

Use any online tool for detecting copies of your blog content. I used Copyscape: www.copyscape.com. It’s neat and simple. Or as Mark here suggests you might also try Copy Alerts: www.copyalerts.com.

If you find that your blog has been copied then the first conventional thing would be to contact the blog author. If the author’s email address is not mentioned in the blog then leave a comment in his/her blog. Now wait for a reply.

If the author refuses to acknowledge your original content or doesn’t even reply, then get in touch with the blog hosting authorities like Wordpress.com or Blogger. If wordpress.com is the host, then you can report the blog as spam or “splog” by clicking on the “Report as Spam” link on your admin bar (Blog Info -> Report as Spam). Note that you need to be signed into your wordpress.com account to do this.

Have you been a victim of content theft? How did you tackle it? Share your experiences and solutions here.
I haven’t heard a remotely decent record in so long. Well scratch that, I picked up Lupe Fiasc

I haven't heard a remotely decent record in so long. Well scratch that, I picked up Lupe Fiasco's latest offering, "The Cool", about two months ago and that was hot. I also got Lil Wayne's "Carter III" and I honestly wasn't that impressed. Maybe it was because it had already been over hyped on the airwaves. Either way, I am yet to sit through the whole album.

The problem with music these days is that it has lost track of its most powerful pull; the ability to relate and be related to. You see, when 2pac was talking about the "Rose that grew out of the concrete" we all knew what he was talking about. On the other hand, I have never made it "rain on any hoes" a la Fat Joe and I can't dream of owning a Maybach (shout out to Rick Ross). Hip hop may not be dying but it is definitely on life support. This goes past hip hop though. Lets take a look at some award winning lyrics from a recent R & B hit by Ray-J "Sexy Can I".

Sexy can I, just pardon my manners. Girl how you shake it, got a playa like (ohhhh) It's a kodak moment, let me go and get my camera All I wanna no is, sexy can I. Sexy can I, hit it from the front, then I hit it from the back. know you like it like that. then we take it to the bed, then we take it to the floor then we chill for a second, then were back at it for more.

Ladies, you swooning yet? Someone should tell my man Ray that R & B stands for Rhythm and Blues. I am just tired of waiting for someone to make something that is well thought out and shows more than minimal effort. I miss the days when rap, hip hop, and rock tried to change the world. Those days when musicians held a mirror up to society and raged "against the machine". Maybe I am just getting old but that was music. These days music like that is only found deep, deep, underground and I am not in the mood to dig. Well, maybe I'll make a record.

Trackbacks or posts linking in, are acknowledged in totally different ways in WordPress versus TypeP

Trackbacks or posts linking in, are acknowledged in totally different ways in WordPress versus TypePad. In TypePad, trackbacks are separated and added below your posts, but above your comments. That's how it should be. In WordPress, they just look like ordinary comments, with an automated excerpt from the post displayed a s a comment. What does that mean for TypePad users switching to WordPress?

When importing a blog from TypePad to WordPress, the trackbacks are kept, but turned into comments. So posts with trackbacks end up being posts with comments in WordPress. Not sure I like that. I want comments to be comments and trackbacks to be trackbacks. A trackback is not a comment. Well, the good is that the trackbacks are kept at least, but for the reader it is hard to tell whether this is a "real" comment or a "trackbacked" comment.

Hallo?

Greetings or Hola as they say around my neighborhood. First off, I would like to say thank you to Ghetto Philosopher for the invitation to this blog. I am not here to try to save the world with my words. I am just here to let off some steam and well just say what is on my mind. I might sound a little self centered sometimes but hey I am just being real.

I bring a unique and different voice and dare I say; a breath of fresh air. A little bit about myself. I am a harsh critic about everything including myself (it's a cultural thing). I have an opinion on everything and I am not afraid to use it. I am looking forward to sharing my stance and in the process learning about yours.

Pak Le Arshavin... :-P

I love books. I have crates and crates of books. Most are unread. I buy books that intrigue me everywhere....bookstores,flea markets, yard sales, library sales, used books stores, Wal-Mart, etc. I have quite a collection of really good books. My 6 favorite books that I own (and have actually read) are:

"One More Day" by Mitch Albom....This is one of the rare books that I have read more than once. I cry everytime.

"Bridges of Madison County"...only love story that I have ever liked. Poor Francesca! "Sofie's Choice"....I can't believe that she has to make a choice of which child lives and which child dies! But, truthfully, one of my favorite parts is when she tells the guy that she likes his seersucker jacket. Only, she doesn't speak English all that well and says, "I love your cocksucker jacket."

"Verses That Hurt"....poetry meets self-mutilation and pain. Actually, I bought this book as a joke for Trailerparkskipper. We have a ball making fun of it. Sometimes, we pretend to be onstage doing interpretive dance to it. I think our fav is:

"There's a spider.

There's a spider.

Step on it! Step on it!

Get a shovel!!!!" We hoot and holler and make devious plans to offer to do something for the Christmas play at church. Then, we would dress up in black turtlenecks and black jeans and do "The Spider".

"

And of course, after posting that, I have to say the next book is:

THE BIBLE...it really is. But, I find it hard to understand. So, I have one of the newer additions. I, also, have an original slave Bible which is really cool.

In every bloggers life comes a special day - the day they first launch a new blog. Now unless you went out and purchased someone else''s blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader - you. Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best friend about your new blog but that''s about as far you went when it comes to finding readers. Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers.

These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.

It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called "traction", which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.Top 10 Tips

10. Write at least five major "pillar" articles. A pillar article is usually a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good "how-to" lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn''t news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.

9. Write one new blog post per day minimum. Not every post has to be a pillar, but you should work on getting those five pillars done at the same time as you keep your blog fresh with a daily news or short article style post. The important thing here is to demonstrate to first time visitors that your blog is updated all the time so they feel that if they come back tomorrow they will likely find something new. This causes them to bookmark your site or subscribe to your blog feed.

You don''t have to produce one post per day all the time but it is important you do when your blog is brand new. Once you get traction you still need to keep the fresh content coming but your loyal audience will be more forgiving if you slow down to a few per week instead. The first few months are critical so the more content you can produce at this time the better.

8. Use a proper domain name. If you are serious about blogging be serious about what you call your blog. In order for people to easily spread the word about your blog you need an easily rememberable domain name. People often talk about blogs they like when they are speaking to friends in the real world (that''s the offline world, you remember that place right?) so you need to make it easy for them to spread the word and pass on your URL. Try and get a .com if you can and focus on small easy to remember domains rather than worry about having the correct keywords (of course if you can get great keywords and easy to remember then you''ve done a good job!).

7. Start commenting on other blogs. Once you have your pillar articles and your daily fresh smaller articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world. One of the best ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people''s blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.

Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific commentor and always have something valuable to say then people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.

6. Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts. A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger''s article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry - it''s sort of like your blog telling someone else''s blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.

This is a good technique because like leaving comments a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important - it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.

5. Encourage comments on your own blog. One of the most powerful ways to convince someone to become a loyal reader is to show there are other loyal readers already following your work. If they see people commenting on your blog then they infer that your content must be good since you have readers so they should stick around and see what all the fuss is about. To encourage comments you can simply pose a question in a blog post. Be sure to always respond to comments as well so you can keep the conversation going.

4. Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival. A blog carnival is a post in a blog that summarizes a collection of articles from many different blogs on a specific topic. The idea is to collect some of the best content on a topic in a given week. Often many other blogs link back to a carnival host and as such the people that have articles featured in the carnival enjoy a spike in new readers.

To find the right blog carnival for your blog, do a search at http://blogcarnival.com/.

3. Submit your blog to blogtopsites.com. To be honest this tip is not going to bring in a flood of new readers but it''s so easy to do and only takes five minutes so it''s worth the effort. Go to Blog Top Sites, find the appropriate category for your blog and submit it. You have to copy and paste a couple of lines of code on to your blog so you can rank and then sit back and watch the traffic come in. You will probably only get 1-10 incoming readers per day with this technique but over time it can build up as you climb the rankings. It all helps!

2. Submit your articles to EzineArticles.com. This is another tip that doesn''t bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it''s worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have - your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.

How you benefit is through what is called your "Resource Box". You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.

1. Write more pillar articles. Everything you do above will help you to find blog readers however all of the techniques I''ve listed only work when you have strong pillars in place. Without them if you do everything above you may bring in readers but they won''t stay or bother to come back. Aim for one solid pillar article per week and by the end of the year you will have a database of over 50 fantastic feature articles that will work hard for you to bring in more and more readers.
