Calgary Tory offers no apology for immigrant-crime comment

by Jason Fekete; Thursday, September 25, 2008 - Canwest News Service
http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/story.html?id=0add4a8...

CALGARY - Local Conservative incumbent Lee Richardson expressed regret Thursday - but offered no apology or resignation - for controversial comments he made suggesting immigrants are to blame for much of the crime in Canada.

But opposition parties and leaders representing minority groups are demanding the Calgary Centre Tory candidate - whose riding population is almost one-quarter recent immigrants - immediately apologize and either resign or be turfed for his "disgraceful" remarks.

"(Stephen) Harper must fire this man right away," Liberal Leader Stephane Dion told reporters on the campaign trail, suggesting the comments reek of "intolerance" he attributed to the former Reform party.

"He cannot be a candidate anymore."

The remarks were denounced by police officials, criminologists and immigrant aid groups, who noted there's no data suggesting immigrants are to blame for a disproportionate amount of crime either in Calgary or across Canada.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper - who already has been knocked off-message a few times this campaign by candidates making inappropriate comments - could face the fallout at a campaign event Friday in Calgary.

"Mr. Richardson has clarified his remarks, and from our perspective the matter is over," said Kory Teneycke, Harper's chief spokesman.

The political firestorm stems from an interview with a Calgary weekly newspaper published Thursday, in which Richardson is quoted as saying many crimes aren't committed by people who "grew up next door" and that immigrants aren't as law-abiding as the rest of the population.

The central task I have set myself and this party is to be as radical in social reform as Margarat Thatcher was in economic reform. That is how we plan to repair our broken society.

We will also back marriage in the tax system. To those who say...why pick out marriage, why do you persist in aggravating people who for whatever reason choose not to get married, I say, I dont´t want to aggravate anyone, but I believe in commitment.

The Guardians videoanalys av talet drar man slutsatsen att "the Tories HAVE changed".

In Birmingham, last Sunday (28/09/08), the Birmingham Fems protested the Tory conference because they were giving out coupons to go to the Rocket lap dancing club. An event I wished I had been able to attend, but as it was I was ill and I could not make it. So I supported them from my bed and wishing them the best of luck. To be honest I had been worried because of the size of their group and the lack of publicity of the protest, that not many would show up and in turn ridicule them. When it was documented in the Birmingham Post I was extremely happy for them. The entry had comments such as these:

Currently, licences for lapdancing clubs last 10 years, leaving the women working there exposed to exploitation, spokeswoman Clare Lovell said.

"We’re not puritans here at all," she said. "But the issue at the moment is that there isn’t any way for local authorities to check the girls here are being treated properly.

"I use the word ‘girls’ deliberately because most of those working in the industry are in their teens."

The group wants to reclassify lapdancing clubs as officially part of the sex industry.

Delegates at the conference have been given tickets giving them a discount on entry to the Rocket Club, on Broad Street, during the conference.

This wasn't attacking the lapdance club that was sponsoring the Tories (why am I not surprised this is the only place that would sponsor them?), it was the fact that it is the deliberate objectification of women and the Tories are promoting it. Everyone seemed to get this idea. Except, however, for some old bag who thought it was her mission to tell the world (or at least the Birmingham Mail, because lets face it she's obviously not wanted anywhere else.) that what these women were stupid in believing women should be treated as people and not objects. Maureen Messent (a.k.a The old bag) writes this in her online article:

we are left with that laughable regiment of tin-drawered women who protested at conference delegates being offered £10-off vouchers at the Rocket lap-dancing club.

I've got to admit when I read her insults to the group I did say some profanities, such as "cheeky bitch", "crazed cow" and so on, there were quite a lot, after all these people are my friends. But what angered me more was her glamorizing the the lapdancing trade:

They were shrill. He was gentlemanly. They tried to paint those luscious dancers as down-trodden and exploited. Mr Sartori pointed out that, far from being exploited, his dancers were members of the acting union, Equity.

The group weren't saying that Mr Sartori's dancers (god, I feel sick just writing that) were 'down-trodden and exploited' they were saying that there are women in the profession that were and for the Tories to be advertising it suggested there was nothing wrong with treating women like crap. Would she want her daughter to be a lapdancer? would she not worry about her daughter if she were to enter that line of work? These questions are of course hypothetical, in my opinion I doubt the old bag could ever get a boyfriend let alone a child. But hey, science has advanced! And lets face it some guys are desperate. Yes that may be low but she's angered me so she'll just have to deal with it. I suppose the two of us do have something in common, one thing nothing more... I hope! We like to ridicule our opponents.

I trust that their spokesman, Ms Clare Lovell, isn’t under the impression she represents the majority of West Midland women.

Back to your cauldron, Clare.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="120" caption="The witch??"][/caption]

Ah so the bag wants to do a personal attack? Well guess what? I'm so much better at it then you. What I can't get my head round is how she calls Clare a witch when she puts a photo like the one here (left) next to it. And she puts her hand under her chin, personally it looks like shes trying to prop up her third and fourth chin for the camera but thats just me. That was a bit mean, I will admit, but after what she said about my friend I can't say I feel all that sorry. If you would like to read the rest her dribble please click here. I really wanted to email this woman, but alas, I could not find any contact details on her 'columnist's' page. So I put it all here, well I would have anyway but if I would have had that I would have waited for her response. I might have been a bit nicer, but hey, I guess we'll never know. In the mean time she has graduated to a place on the Enemies against women page. It saddens me to put women on there but if you do the crime you need do the time. Just between you and me, I don't see here coming off for good behavior. Kind of makes me want to sic Object on her ass.

Comment at end

Tory Policy man Oliver Letwin says:

CAMERON IS THE 'HEIR TO BLAIR'

I've always rather liked Oliver Letwin. He seems a straightforward and honest kind of guy. TOO straight for some.

At the Tory conference yesterday he got into deep trouble. He let the cat out of the bag - NOT! - by telling a fringe meeting what we all knew ages ago: that David Cameron is the "heir to Blair".

And just how did we know? Well, because Mr Cameron himself TOLD us so in October, 2005. Excerpt:

Something more revealing happened at this month's Conservative Party conference. At a dinner with newspaper executives, leadership contender David Cameron declared: "I am the heir to Blair."

By DAVID WOODING
Whitehall Editor

A SENIOR David Cameron aide blundered yesterday by hailing him as the heir to Tony Blair.

Policy supremo Oliver Letwin said his boss would do “exactly” the same as the former PM with schools, hospitals and benefit reform.

But his outburst was greeted with dismay by Mr Cameron, who loathes being compared with Mr Blair and fears it will put off voters.

Mr Letwin told a fringe meeting in Birmingham that many necessary public service reforms had been put in place by Mr Blair.

Asked if Mr Cameron was the “heir to Blair”, he replied: “Yes, in these particular places.”

Mr Letwin has a habit of speaking out of turn and famously hid during the 2001 campaign after saying the Tories would cut £20billion off public spending.

Meanwhile, Ashish Prashar, axed as a Tory press officer, blasted the leadership as “looking like something out of a 1960s American boardroom”.

The Press Association reported it thus:

Tory 'backs' Blairite policies

Many of the structures needed to make improvements in key policy areas including education have already been put in place by Blairites, according to a shadow cabinet member.

Oliver Letwin, MP for West Dorset and chairman of the Tory policy and research department, also said David Cameron can be seen as the heir to Tony Blair because he wants to do "exactly" the same as the former PM in these areas.

Mr Letwin's comments came during a fringe event organised by the Independent newspaper at the Conservative conference.

He praised schools minister Lord Adonis for pushing forward the ambitious academies programme - which Mr Cameron has pledged to take even further.

"Although he is a Labour minister, he has actually designed the mechanisms we need," Mr Letwin said.

When it was put to him that Conservatives were following the agenda championed by Mr Blair on education and welfare, Mr Letwin replied: "I think that is exactly what we are doing."

[caption id="attachment_7012" align="alignright" width="203" caption="Prior to Blair's Final Queen's speech 2006.
He was also asked whether that meant Mr Cameron was the "heir to Blair" - a mantle the Tory leader claimed in private soon after taking charge of the party but later backed away from.

Mr Letwin responded: "Yes, in these particular places. By about year seven of this administration Mr Blair and his colleagues had roughly come to the right conclusions."

He said the "tragedy" of the Blair regime was that they had not realised how to fix services before coming to power and had to work things out "on the job".

Aside to Mr Cameron:

Sounds fair enough to me!

Everyone knows that I´m all in favour of apprenticeship, but let me tell you this is no time for a novice.

Every day I see him motivated to work for the best interests of people around the country.

In the latest embarrassment for the Conservative campaign, a candidate who blogged after the July beheading on a Winnipeg-bound bus that Canadians should be allowed to carry concealed handguns for protection has resigned from the Toronto Centre race.

(1) Law-abiding men and women should be allowed to carry concealed handguns, saying: "If women and gays really wanted to stop being victims of hate crimes, they'd be in support of this, but judging from discussions, they'd rather be helpless and rely on government."

Well, it's that time of year again. The campaign for the 2008 Federal Election has come into force. Many people are thinking whether or not they should keep Stephen Harper or simply throw him out. The greatest accomplishments he did so far as follows:

Lowering the GST from 7% then from 6% and finally 5%

Establishing a Transit Pass Tax Credit

Lowering Income Taxes

Imposed stiffer penalties for certain crimes in the Criminal Code

These are all I can think of so far, guys. However, Stephane Dion, the leader of the Liberal Party wanted to change all that. He wanted to impose a carbon tax and eventually put the GST the way it was - 7%. For my part, I strongly opposed the GST rollback. If Stephane Dion were able to quash the Transit Pass Tax Credit as well, we would have to pay the price.

Meanwhile at the NDP, Jack Layton wanted to protect the pocketbooks of Canadians. He also wanted to confront the poverty issues that surround all Canadians. Global warming becomes a strong issue, solve problems to Canada's manufacturing industry like it did for the GM plant closing down in Oshawa in 2009, the possibilities are endless!

Meanwhile in La Belle Province (Quebec), Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe, very well known to promote Quebec separating from Canada also wanted to promote something that is vaguely similiar. He wanted to have a high-speed train link between Montreal and Quebec City eventually joining Ontario and the United States. Since I live outside of Quebec, my fellow Quebeckers can decode Duceppe's platform.

Next up, we head towards the Green Party. Elizabeth May is the leader. The media originally dumped her request on joining the televised debate on both English and French-lanugage media, but it was quickly reversed and she can join in the the debate.

Back in Ontario, in a small city of Peterborough, there has been some political football going on there. Incumbent M.P. Dean Del Maestro wanted to have a train link from Toronto to Peterborough. I strongly support Deal Del Maestro's plan on re-establishing rail service.

According to the latest poll, the Conservatives are heading towards a majority government. Right now, there are many series of attack ads currently aired on Canadian Airwaves by the all major parties. The Bloc Quebecois ads are aired solely in Quebec. Since there are too many ads to place on this blog. You better off searching up on Youtube.

There are many newspapers and television networks out there that offer full, complete coverage of the election. The CBC offers that here. Along with CityNews.ca. And CTV. Also Global.

Readers of the Independent on Sunday will have seen a new ComRes poll today which shows a major change in the British public's voting intentions.

The new poll showed the Conservatives still leading with 39%, down 5% on the previous poll, whilst the Liberal Democrats were the biggest winners on 21%, up 4% on the previous poll, after a sucessful conference in Bournemouth. Labour, whose conference started in Manchester, rose to 27%, an increase of 2% on the previous polling figures. David Cameron's twelve point lead is the lowest since May.

The poll contained a series of questions surrounding the leadership of the Labour party, which prove to be good news for Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Less than a third of those polled (30%) thought David Miliband would make a better Prime Minister, with nearly half (47%) disagreeing. Back in June, when the same question was asked, 41% thought Miliband would be better. A majority of 57% think that the current economic climate means it is the wrong time for Labour to change leader. An overwhelming majority of 71% think that there should be a general election in the event of Labour changing their leader once more.

If we combine the reduced Conservative lead with the lack of interest in a new Labour leader, then this strengthens Gordon Brown's position. We wait, with anticipation, ahead of other polls due to be released shortly.

Come è possibile uscirne in modo definitivo?

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%B3raidhe#Wood_kerne_and_Tories):

There was a long tradition of guerrilla warfare in Ireland before the 1690s... In the Irish Confederate Wars of the 1640s and 50s, irregular fighters on the Irish Confederate side were known as "tories", from the Irish word tóraidhe (modern tóraí) meaning "pursued man". The tories were usually Confederate soldiers whose units had broken up and who regrouped in small bands in rugged country such as the Wicklow Mountains or the Bog of Allen. From 1650-53, during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, the tories caused the occupying English Parliamentarian forces a great deal of trouble, attacking vulnerable garrisons, tax-collectors and supply columns and then melting away when faced with detachments of English troops.

So why do conservative Brits monopolise the word "Tory" now?

Because, in the contemporary super-power politics of way back then, the Gaelic Irish and Old English settlers of Ireland (in the form of the provisional national parliament of Confederation of Kilkenny), found it instrumental - in bargaining for their liberties - to make a realpolitik tactical alliance with the Royalists against Cromwell the Butcher (a prototype of later ideological mass-murderers such as Hitler and Stalin).

And because of that Royalist tangent, later British royalists and then conservatives would be disparaged by their opponents, by being referred to as Irish Guerillas.

I suggest that we take back this epithet, this alientated word of power and symbol of our proud history, and wear it instead as a badge of honour - as the true successors to the original and genuine old tories - na Sean Tóraidhe.

Neste parlamentsval i Storbritannia må haldast innan mai 2010.

Once again, there seems to be a heavier hand in editing Statistics Canada’s releases. This morning The Daily reported that:

“Spending on research and development in the higher education sector amounted to $9.6 billion (current dollars) in the fiscal year 2006/2007.”

but there was no word on whether this was an increase or decrease from the previous period, which Statscan releases almost always have.

The year 2006/7 was the first year that the Harper government was in office. Investment in research and development is essential to increase our economy’s productivity, which hasn’t increased since the start of 2006 (and has grown at a dismal rate since 2000).

Canada has some of the most generous tax incentives for private R&D in the world, yet Canada has one of the lowest rates of investment in R&D among OECD countries thanks to both low rates of government and business investment in R&D, accoridng to Industry Canada’s Science and Technology Data tables. Canada’s investment in higher education R&D had recently been relatively good, but it looks like the current federal government may soon rectify that.

The Harper government is laying off federal scientists and forcing departments to slash their R&D budgets . It is deregulating food safety inspection and transferring or selling off federal labs to the private sector, intent on further commercialization and privatization. They eliminated the national science advisor and have instead appointed Preston Manning among others to help advise on science issues. This approach to science recently earned the Harper government scathing criticism in an editorial in Nature, one of the most respected science publications in the world.

This is why the laws must be changed. A life has been snubbed out because of a possible drunk driver. I am not sure how one can justify going in the wrong direction on a provincial highway? The way the laws stand he will probably get a "slap on the wrist", if convicted in Ontario. I am not sure how anyone can condone these actions anymore. If any political leaders are listening, its time for the laws to change, now and protect the public against this serious and unforgiving offense.
-----
Several years ago, before he moved to Canada, met his wife and had two beautiful daughters, Herminio Del Valle was told in a dream not to drive.

So he never bought a car, thinking all the while he was preventing a horrible accident.

To get to work, he turned to long-time pal Pablo Guzman, who had also emigrated from the Dominican Republic and got Del Valle his job at a Burlington aluminum factory. A trusted employee, Guzman was given the keys to the factory to open the shop early each morning.

That's how the two men found themselves on Hwy. 403 in Mississauga around 4:45 a.m. Friday, when an allegedly drunk driver in a pickup truck going in the wrong direction hit their car head-on. "He was always driving people here and there," Guzman's friend, Patricia Moreno, said inside his Woodbridge home yesterday, Guzman's crying wife, Rocio, and three children sitting next to her.

"Especially widows. He was always helping them," she said, her voice drowned out by sobs. "Now, she's a widow." About 15 km south in North York, Del Valle's widow, Carmen, sat with daughters Catherine, 9, and Natalie, 7, surrounded by family who had flown in from the U.S.

"Everything was for his family," a shattered Carmen said in Spanish with a family member translating. Carmen had arrived at the Guzman home hours after the crash Friday with condolences, only to learn her husband was also dead.

"My dad was the best daddy," Catherine said, tears rolling down her cheeks. "He used to try to get me the stuff that I need."

Each of Guzman's children -- Victor, 8, Gleny, 6, and Santiago, 4 -- have been coping in different ways.

"Where's daddy?" Victor asked Moreno yesterday. "Heaven," she said.

"I want to go to the CN tower to be closer to daddy," he replied.

Gleny was found in her closet Saturday, holding a dress her dad had just bought for her.

Santiago clutched a toy truck in his hand while he sat on his mother's lap.

"He knows it was a truck," Moreno said. "So he says that truck killed his dad."

For my readers who don't know anything about British politics, you may not understand why so many in the British Isles look at us and shake their heads in dismay.

Aside from the obvious reasons; unabashed support for American torture of prisoners, renditions, an unpopular war and a view-with-horror of our fundamentalist religion-driven politics, America is suffering from a comparison of political parties in the minds of many Brits.

The UK has a parliamentary system of government, where parties stand for election and the party with the most Members of Parliament control the government. This party or sometimes a coalition of parties, appoints a Prime Minister, it's chief executive, along with ministers of other departments such as treasury (Secretary of the Exchequer) Defense and State ( Foreign Secretary).

There are two main parties: Labour and the Conservative Party (often referred to as Tory). There are also a few other very small minority parties which stand for election, but rarely have more than a few seats in Parliament.

The Labour party is your pretty standard European-style liberal party of Democratic Socialist bent, which has been substantially changed to a more centrist and business-friendly party under the leadership of former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The Conservative party is substantially more conservative, though it has recently softened many of its positions, such as an open embrace of civil rights for homosexuals and an open embrace of rehabilitation programs for British prisons.

In the old days, the two main American parties were near mirrors of the two British parties, with the Republicans representing the big business-friendly, socially conservative Tories, and the Democrats representing the more liberal and socially conscious Labour Party.

But over the last couple of decades this mirroring has gone the way of the Dodo, at least as far as the two major parties are concerned.

These days, the Democrats and Republicans seem to represent two very different British parties: The Tories and the BNP.

-Nuff said

A new poll suggests the Conservatives have solidified a substantial lead over their closest rivals, thanks at least in part to a lack of confidence in Liberal helmsman Stéphane Dion. The Canadian Press Harris-Decima poll, conducted Sept. 10-13, gave the Conservatives 40 per cent support across Canada, followed by the Liberals at 26 per cent.
