Last night I saw The Black Keys at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. They put on an amazing show that I will never forget. They played a really good set that left me very satisfied. The night before I saw The Kills and The Raconteurs, which were also up to par (even with the lead singers of both bands being sick!) All in all it was a great trip, and I'm glad I made it.

Tuesday I went to see The Raconteurs in concert at Nashville’s Hallowed Holy Temple of Music

Tuesday I went to see The Raconteurs in concert at Nashville's Hallowed Holy Temple of Music...The Ryman Auditorium.

We were treated to the Jack White's Nashville group playing on their home turf in Nashville's best venue at the end of a pretty extensive summer tour schedule.

The Upside:

Great Stage Set-up....Very minimalistic, not over-kill, not under-kill. (didn't play with in-ears...only wedge monitors)

Great Stage backdrop and Lights.

Brandon Benson sounded AMAZING.

Huge energy from the band while remaining very very tight!

Huge energy from the crowd...everyone REALLY dug it.

Amazing three piece burnt orange suit worn by Jack White donned with bone decorations....even ribs on the vest.

The Downside:

A sick Jack White....one of the main reasons to see this band was to watch Jack kill some stuff but his voice wasn't up to par.

A VERY short set...Clocked in at around 1 hour and 10 minutes....this included about a 5 min. set break, for what I paid for tickets this was truly disappointing.

A poor mix...The band fought it all night...I hate it b/c I understand how this affects the band....Jack's guitar was terribly washed and overpowered by Benson's...any key parts that were important were muffled...the drummer's kit was uber-muffled and had NO definition other than kick and snare :(

The dude two rows in front lighting up a joint....yeah, that was annoying....this is the Ryman dude.

Ok, so all in all, the downside kind of made this show a little to be desired. I'm guessing the boys would like to take another stab at rocking this venue. I'm almost certain that the impromptu set break was to TRY and fix some sound issues. Jack seemed visibly frustrated while attempting to adjust things with his guitar and his tech came out to make some adjustments as well. Same thing happened while he was playing keys on one song.

To be honest...and this may sound bad...but this was the worst mixed show I've seen at the Ryman which is usually known for impecible sound. That being said, this was a great show. You can't really blame the band becuase really they gave a stellar performance even with Jack White being under the weather.

Overall, I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

For your weekend...watch this clip of the boys killing a performance for Jools Holland:

So this weekend I hung out at Austin City Limits! So many bands, wish I could have seen them all, but I had to pick and chose. The pictures I took are of the performers on stage, in action. I think its sucky to go up to someone and just ask them for a picture....especially when they are preparing to get on stage.

These are the bands I managed to catch: Jakob Dylan, Gogol Bordello, David Byrne, Alejandro Escovedo, Erykah Badu, Beck, Gillian Welch, Neko Case, the Raconteurs, Tegan and Sara, Band of Horses, and the Foo Fighters.

[caption id="attachment_51" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Beck rocking out at Austin City Limits 2008"][/caption]

BECK and his band were amazing! I was actually hanging out back stage before he went on and was able to catch him. I have never seen anyone with their game face on like this before. He was so intense and focused. He started the show with his hit “Loser” and then went into songs from his most recent album Modern Guilt. The highlight of the show was when all the musicians stepped away from their instruments and got a hold of electronic midi controllers and began to make music using only those electronics. So cool. He made me melt when he went on to perform the song “Lost Cause”. This is one of the best concerts I have ever been to!

[caption id="attachment_48" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Live at Austin City Limits 2008"][/caption]

The RACONTEURS simply just ROCK!! So good. I enjoyed the whole show and couldn’t take my eyes off of them. All the musicians blew me away…but the drummer Patrick Keeler was amazing!! I was so honored to meet him after the show in the artist lounge. The band impressed me with such great musicianship without stepping too far out of the song or taking too many solos.

GILLIAN WELCH was probably the most dynamic act I saw. She performed with David Rawlings. They were the only group I saw without a full band and managed to sound so full. Her lyrics came through at all times. The highlight of this show was when she invited a friend to come up and sing a song acapella. I have seen and met Gillian before. She went to Berklee before my time, but would perform every year at spring break in Nashville for Berklee students. They put on a great show and left the crowd wanting more.

[caption id="attachment_53" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Jakob Dylan at Austin City Limits 2008"][/caption]

JAKOB DYLAN AND THE GOLD MOUNTAIN REBELS made me want to run out and get their new album. I love Jakob Dylan’s voice. Great songwriting. I was way to shy to talk to him back stage in the artist lounge, but after a couple of beers I was able to go talk to his bass player who is located in Austin.

[caption id="attachment_55" align="alignright" width="300" caption="David Byrne at Austin City Limits 2008"][/caption]

DAVID BYRNE was a blast. (Another artist I was to shy/not drunk enough to talk to) His band was great and his energy was bouncing all over the stage. His dancers made me keep on dancing. Great songs, and he is great at taking them to a whole new level.

[caption id="attachment_56" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Gogol Bordello's lead lead singer at Austin City Limits 2008"][/caption]

GOGOL BORDELLO was a pleasant surprise. A friend had played me a track of theirs before the show and I really didn't think I'd like them but....SHIT ....they blew me away!! So so good! I am a new fan and would really love to see them again.

[caption id="attachment_57" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Gogol Bordello backstage at Austin City Limits"][/caption]

Today Roundelay will present the award for Best set of the 2008 festival season. It was impossible to narrow it down to one so there are multiple winners. The first winner is The Raconteurs set at Bonnaroo. To us this was a no brainer. The band was spot on that day. Especially Jack White who delivered some of the most face melting solos I have ever experienced. Especially the solos during Blue Veins.

The Second winner is Nine Inch Nails' Lollapalooza performance. This spectacle of music and lights wowed the crowd. Fans and non-fans alike.

The third and final winner is Gogol Bordello's set at Bonnaroo. There is really only one word that can be used to describe this set. Party!

If you saw the Raconteur's sunday performance at Austin CIty Limits than you already know this. Jack White has misplaced a disk in his neck. It was obvious something was wrong from the very beginning of the set. White was having trouble singing and it was visible that he was in pain. Later in the set he acknowledged his problem. If anything positive came from White's problem it was that it resulted in a very unique Raconteurs show. Many of the songs normally sung by Jack White were sung by co-frontman Brendan Benson. Below is the video of the Raconteur's cover of Charley Jordan's Keep it Clean from ACL. The video makes it clear that this problem could effect Jack for a while. Hopefully Jack recovers soon.

S. Eliot’s poem The Wasteland at least three times in your four years at the University of Southern California. Even if you are a Physics major, the poem will somehow work its way into your curriculum while you are fulfilling your Humanities requirements, and Lord, help you if you are an English major. Why must we all read this ridiculous poem? Actually, I have no idea – but I’ll throw my four best guesses out there.

#1) Reading The Wasteland is a rite of passage. In Japan, on the second Monday in January (National Coming of Age Day), all 20-year-old women wear a pair of zori slippers for the first time and go dancing as a part Seijin Shiki. In the United States, we make our undergraduates read a poem written in 7 different languages that includes a rape, a sex-changing fortune-teller, and a guy with a pocket full of currants.

#2) T. S. Eliot is the only person since the late 18th century collapse of the Tory party to be somehow both British and American at the same time. The two branches of the English Department wrestle over the rights to his work like it’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and this crafty foresight on Eliot’s part doubles his opportunity to be listed on 21st-century syllabi.

#3) For some reason, scholars agree that this is the most important poem ever written, even though…

#4) No one has a clue what the fuck it is about. I’m serious. I was forced to read this poem at least a combined fifteen times as an undergraduate and graduate student, and (really more out of habit than anything – because it’s just what you are supposed to do), I have now taught the poem half a dozen times. Despite this advanced study, I’ll reiterate the point that I really don’t have a clue what the fuck it is about. I think we keep assigning it in hopes that someday one of our students will magically figure it out for us, and then we can stop assigning it. But it’s never going to happen.

Still, there is one part of The Wasteland that I like – the ten lines that make up Book IV – and these ten lines are going to form the basis of what may ultimately be the most sentimental piece of advice that Dr. Wizard will ever give you. Here they are:

Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,

Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep seas swell,

And the profit and loss.

                                    A current under sea

Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell

He passed the stages of his age and youth

Entering the Whirlpool.

                                    Gentile or Jew

O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,

Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

So, here we are at Lesson #16: you should Consider Phlebas. And what do I mean by that? Well, until geneticists figure out a way to stop our telomeres from deteriorating, each one of us, from the time we turn the corner into adulthood (which is what college is all about) until the time we find ourselves being spoon-fed applesauce in the retirement home, are on a fast track towards death. Our youth, and our strength, is fleeting. Six days ago, my plan for this upcoming weekend was to fly to Minneapolis to run the Twin Cities Marathon. Now, I’m waiting for the hole where my appendix used to be to heal so I can have the doctor’s clearance to spend five minutes on the elliptical machine. Six years ago, two of my good friends from college died in a car accident. While one of these surprises is relatively minor, and one was catastrophic, the point is that we have no idea how long we will enjoy the gifts of life that we have been given. Considering Phlebas means…

…being considerate to others (who were once handsome and tall as you). It means listening when your grandfather tells you the story about how he and Lurch McGee hitch-hiked to California the summer they turned 18 to work as orange-pickers (because someday you’ll want someone to listen to you). It means turning down your stereo when your neighbor asks you to do so because he has to work the next morning, even though the new Raconteurs album is fucking awesome, and sounds so much better cranked to eleven (because someday you’ll have to be at work at 6am). And Considering Phlebas means…

…capitalizing on the gifts of youth. It means going outside on the weekends instead of drawing the shades and playing Xbox 360 for 48 consecutive hours. It means asking that guy who’s in your Latin reading group out on a date (see Lesson #15). It means rolling your car windows down, taking a road trip, and cranking the new Raconteurs album to eleven on your car stereo (where there is no neighbor who has to be at work the next morning). CONSIDER PHLEBAS!!! WHO WAS ONCE HANDSOME AND TALL AS YOU!!!

And now that Phlebas has been considered, let’s close today’s dead-poet-inspired lesson by stealing a line from the great movie Dead Poets Society. When Robin Williams’ character brings his class to look at a picture of some of the school’s long forgotten alumni, he whispers:

“They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? - - Carpe - - hear it? - - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.” Make your lives extraordinary…

…or, at least, go buy the new Raconteurs album.

Ah the third and final day. The strangest thing about this year's festival is that Friday and Sunday had the best lineup (in my mind) and yet neither day was sold out.

First up for the day was Priscilla Ahn. Will had seen her when she opened for Amos Lee a while ago and suggested we check her out. She was a last minute replacement for Adele which had to be somewhat difficult, especially given that it was just her on this huge stage. But she delt with the pressure really well, in fact she's pretty damn funny. One of her songs in particular titled "The Boob Song" was really enjoyed by the crowd.

At the same stage after Priscilla was Tristan Prettyman. I've been a Tristan fan for over three years now and I've seen her in concert a number of times and always look forward to each performance. I was especially excited for this show because I wanted to get a recording. Things were going great, Tristan was playing some of her new material which I really enjoy, but when I looked down to check my levels I realized that my recording had stopped. I tried to start things back up but it would immediately stop recording once it started. What the hell. After a few moments I realized that it was out of space. So I abandoned the recording process for the rest of the set and simply enjoyed the set.

I suspected the problem with the recorder was that when I deleted the old files from the CF card that they really didn't get deleted. Sadly I needed a computer to remove these old files and Dell and AT&T had a booths setup with laptops so I figured one of them might have a USB cable. No such luck. My only option was to reformat my CF card to free the space but that meant I'd loose my Tristan recording. Given that there was two more shows that I wanted to record, I saw little option.

With free space at hand, we headed over to see Neko Case. When buying some cables for my recorder I started talking to this fantastic guy that works at Gleb Music and along the way I mentioned that I was going to ACL. He immediately stated that he'd love to get his hands on a Neko Case recording and told me stories of how he'd traveled from California to Washington to see one of her shows. How couldn't I check her out after hearing a story like that.

We then hung out for an hour, keeping our spots a few feet from the stage to see The Raconteurs. Their show was amazing. As much as I love Tristan, I think The Raconteurs edged her out just a little bit. Unfortunately Jack White (lead vocals) had a slipped disc in his back but somehow managed to pull himself through the show. Their studio albums most definitely have a rock feel to them but their live performances are much more intense, but how couldn't they rock with a guy like Brendan Benson on guitar?

Initially I wasn't sure about this years lineup, but thankfully those feelings were unwarranted because in the end I had just as much fun this year as I did the last two. Plus, this year was a lot cooler (temperature wise) than previous years and the grounds were much more enjoyable thanks to volunteers picking up bottles in exchange for t-shirts. I was really glad that Tate could join us this year and am hoping that we can have an even larger group for the next festival.

Well it's finally over, and it was a pretty good year for the Austin City Limits Music Festival. There were lots of great bands and good weather. I've covered the festival six years in a row, and it's one of my most exhausting assignments of the year. The last three days I shot 47 bands and more than 6,000 photos which I edited to 119 photos for the Statesman's print editions and online photo galleries. Check out theStatesman's complete Day Three photo gallery. Only six months until SXSW!

It is possible I'm completely behind on the times and what is new to me has been around for some time. That certainly seems to usually be the case. But what can you do?

In this specific instance I'm referring to a series of old school video game inspired art that I came across today. I initially found mention of the works in another blog then followed the links to the artist's page on deviantART. The artist's name is RETROnoob. The pictures are done using video game sprites and real world backgrounds blending them together giving them the illusion of mixing the digital world with the real world.

It gives the images very interesting depth and certainly put a smile on my face. Here are some of my favorites. The images are linked back to RETROnoob's gallery if you want to see more.

There was an event held tonight in bay front a few blocks from my house in downtown Hilo. It was the 15th annual Ho'olaule'a, which as far as I could gather essentially meant block party. It was a large music festival with about three stages of music, running most of the day. It was kind of like the West Seattle street fair or Strawberry festival, except reduce the number of craft stands and cram in a ton of really good music and way more people. It is quite the event, which at first seemed strange considering the small town feel that permeates this city. Apparently they just know how to party better than back home.

I didn't stick around the whole day, but I did make it down for some really good shows near the end of the night. I ended up sitting on a curb with a few friends, a stones throw from the water, listening to great reggae, in Hawai'i. It was quite the surreal experience, for me at least.

I'm still getting used to the disjunction of my life now from what it was.

Dude, music festivals will totally come to an end for 2008 after this weekend's Austin City Limits festival in Austin, TX. There are so many bands there I would love to see but I refuse to fight the heat, the dirt, and the hippie. My metrosexuality requires air conditioning, toothbrushes, and a daily shower. I also have tickets to see The Swell Season and Fleet Foxes, both of which are in the next five days so that will make up for missing the sweatfest.

I will be watching the AT&T Blue Room for the handful of cool performances that will be streamed live online. Here is the schedule:

[Sigh of content].

No feeling quite matches the sweeping relief that quality, mind-blowing music still lives. Such may be difficult and tedious to find; nevertheless, the elusive true musician more than justifies the effort.

Specifically, I am speaking of Jack White. Still on a Raconteurs concert high, I cannot rave sufficiently. Never mind the insane talent exhibited by this man, for only the fool denies his guitar-slinging worth, but let us consider his devotion to his music, to the music. He does not perform, as do most musicians at comparable levels of success. He feels. He moves. He evokes emotions from a guitar (and piano) in a way for which few other musicians could hope.

And while Jack strives to maintain the integrity of the political backside of music, he leaves the obsessive "business hat" to Reznor. Jack White, if only Jack White, can be relied upon to play exquisite, sincere notes until his dying day, simply just to play. For the music.

Not the stardom, not the performance, not the fans. Not the business, not the industry. Certainly not the money.

For the music.

One of a dying breed, Jack White remains a last-standing true, honest musician who feels every note, chord, song, and lyric.

A wall of sound. Ripping guitars by Jack White backed by the calm and reasoned rhythm of Brendan Benson. Loud and ear ringing noise at once dizzying and comforting.

A concert is more of an experience, a total event that can't be divided into songs. It all melts together into a cacophony of emotion and movement and sound, experienced as a group, an audience and as yourself, an individual. Last night we all participated in something quite special.

Last night, in Stanley Park, there was a good, old-fashioned rock n' roll show. Four guys working hard, sweating, dripping and aching, coaxing the rebellion out of their instruments, kicking Britney Spears (oh come on Andrew!! Too easy a target, pick something better you lazy...)okay, all you hipsters out there, in the face, spitting on those who said rock 'n roll was dead, down, gone, screaming at them that they were wrong. Giving us all something to actually care about, to get excited about, cheer and jump, dance. Something more than just the shadow of music, a theory. Theory was annihilated, and practice triumphed. Ideas were lost amidst pounding bass, screeching guitars, thumping drums.

A moment or two in the park, tall firs contrasted darkly against the reflected light of a city in the background, daytime and night, up and down shifted ever-so slightly to be just a little disorienting. Existing as one among a heaving throng. Smoke billowing up, little dancing red lights among the crowd, hazy notes mingling with the sweet air of Vancouver.

Suspended in time and space. Eternity dripping in sweat.

I am lazy when it comes to picking up new music. I just recently picked up the latest Queens of the Stone Age album, which came out in 2007! What can I say, I am not part of the new hip, "in crowd". Especially now that TRL is going off the air, where will I get all my music news?!?!?!

Anyway, about a month ago I picked up Consolers of The Lonely. Having not owned any White Stripes albums, or the first Raconteurs album, this was a shock even to me. Jack White is obviously a musical genius. And this album is beyond great, it is amazing.

This is one of those albums that you can listen to from beginning to end, over and over. The only reason it was taken out of heavy rotation was because of the new Toadies (which I will review next week) and Metallica albums I recently picked up.

If you are a fan of Jack White, I implore you to go run out and get this album.

Today.

Seriously, stop what you are doing, and go get your ass in the car, on your bike, or push your skateboard and head to your nearest music retailer.

I was all stoked to post my new Fall Mix that I made on Muxtape, but as some of you may have noticed

I was all stoked to post my new Fall Mix that I made on Muxtape, but as some of you may have noticed Muxtape is in some hot water regarding copyright issues, I'm sure so we're left with using our imaginations or iTunes to download the music our favorite bloggers are currently playing on their iPods.

Some of you may wonder how I cam up with my new Fall Mix. Some of you may not care at all. However, as a music enthusiast (and former bass player/singer in numerous rock bands) I feel compelled to explain each song. Sit back and get a glass of water, this may take you a while...

1-The Raconteurs-Steady as She Goes
I'm a huge fan of The White Stripes. I saw Brendan Benson open for them a few years ago at Keyspan Park in Coney Island. I was excited to find that Brendan & Jack had teamed up to form the Raconteurs. The rest of the first album is mediocre, but this song is pretty kick ass. Their second album, however is awesome all the way through.

2-The Shins-Phantom Limb
I jumped on the bandwagon after seeing Garden State. I've since seen them in concert four times. Their third album, Wincing The Night Away is a brilliant continuation of their growth as musicians and as a band. This song makes me happy, but a little chilly at the same time. Great for a Fall Mix!

3-The Black Keys-When The Lights Go Out
I first heard these guys on the soundtrack to Black Snake Moan. I immediately bought Rubber Factory and have kept it in regular rotation ever since. Dirty blues good for Fall or any time of year.

4-Badly Drawn Boy-Everybody's Stalking
Creepy song about ...stalking. As the weather cools and we're left more to our own thoughts we sometimes resort to the unspeakable...plus, the song was used in an awesome movie, Igby Goes Down.

5-Bill Withers-Ain't No Sunshine
I just love this song.

6-Marcy Playground-Sex & Candy
Reminds me of the late 90's - that interim period between the awesome music of the early 90's and now when music was in a transitional period between rock, dance, and electronic. These guys kept it real.

7-Scarlett Johansson-Falling Down
This one is off her album of Tom Waits covers. The album is pretty bad, as is this song, but it's the best of the bunch and I love Scarlett!

8-Pete Yorn-Strange Condition
I bought this album in the Fall of 2002 around the time I also bought John Mayer's Room for Squares. For some reason both albums have a very Fall feel to them. Maybe because I bought them in the Fall. I don't know...

9-Beck-Walls
This one is off Beck's newest album, Modern Guilt which has been in constant rotation since the day I purchased it. This song is eerie, and has provided inspiration and a spooky backdrop to my novel in the works.

10-Ryan Adams-Halloweenhead
Each of his albums reminds me of a different girl I dated, obsessed over, or just loved in one way or another. Rock N Roll - Nancy, Cold Roses - Marissa, Easy Tiger - nobody in particular but what's more Fall than a song about Halloween?

11-Tom Waits-Hold On
This one is off Mule Variations. It's a sad love song, and always makes me think of a girl I dated back in Fall/Winter 2004 named Jillian. We had very little in common, but had a great time together. I think she was turned off when I told her I was not a Democrat. She immediately assumed I was a Republican...I'm a Libertarian.

12-Wilco-Jesus, etc
This song was eerily perfect in describing my feelings on 9/11/01. While technically still summer, the feeling in NYC was immediately cold and scary that day. This song will always bring me back to that time; a time I will never forget.

Coca Cola, that is. The singer/guitarist/songwriter is upset because the song he produced ("Another Way To Die") with Alicia Keys, for the soundtrack of the new James Bond film (Quantum of Solace), is also being used in a Coca Cola campaign to promote the 007 film.

Coca Cola is promoting their Coke Zero brand, dubbing the ad campaign Coke Zero Zero 7 (view below).

"Jack White was commissioned by Sony Pictures to write a theme song for the James Bond film Quantum of Solace, not for Coca Cola," reads a statement from the White camp. "Any other use of the song is based on decisions made by others, not by Jack White. We are disappointed that you first heard the song in a co-promotion for Coke Zero, rather than in its entirety."

Jack White is worried about the integrity of a song he recorded for a James Bond Film???!!! With pop star Alicia Keys??!!! C'mon, man. You already sold your soul to Hollywood in the first place. Live with it! Besides, you already did a cheesey rock jingle for Coke (second clip, below). You've been down this road before, Jack. I don't get it.

Main Stage
Sonic Youth
Bloc Party
Kaiser Chiefs
Foals
Mallu Magalhães

Indie Stage
The Jesus And Mary Chain
The Breeders
Spoon
Animal Collective
Curumin

DJ Stage
Calvin Harris
Mylo
Felix Da Housecat
Mau Mau
