The Wife:

If by "candy" you mean vagina, Southern Belles, then yes, yes I do like American candy. But you know what kind of literal candy I like way better? Blong. I still need to find me some of that sweet stuff . . .

In this leg of the race, the teams departed the floating battlement and headed to the great TAR equalizer, the airport, where Tina's scheming to get herself and her cheating husband Ken and their adopted demon spawn Ryan and Starr onto a 6:45 a.m. departure actually ended up being a boon to every other team on the race. By getting them the airline to switch to a bigger plane, Tina ended up getting a plane large enough to hold all 10 teams. Thanks, Mom, for inadvertently looking out for everyone when you were only trying to look out for yourself.

As a result of her kindness and ingenuity, Tina thought she deserved to board the plane first and cut to the front of the line, causing Terrence to erupt in a rain of volcanic assholery. No one else seemed to have a problem with Tina and Ken boarding the plane first, thus making Terrence the ultimate dickhead in this situation. Frankly, if it were me, I don't know if I could have been comfortable with letting Tina and Ken cut to the front of the line because they're just as big of assholes as Terrence is. But, ultimately, no one was going to get a major lead by jumping on or off the plane first, anyway, so Terrence probably should have just chilled the fuck out for once in his life. Jesus, man, eat some Blong and be cool, yo.

The teams flew to Fortelaza, Brazil, where they would travel by taxi to the seaside town of Camuco. Once there, they would drive dune buggies to the town of Caife and find their next clue at a shop called Barraca De Manuel, the names of which were all horribly butchered by every race participant except for Sarah. I can't wait for the race to leave Brazil so I don't have to hear people butcher Portuguese anymore.

At Barraca De Manuel, the teams received their detour for this leg of the race. They could either "beach it" and race dune buggies down to the shoreline where they would roll 440 pound skiffs out to sea on logs with the help of some strapping locals or "docket" and race dune buggies down to the local shipping yard where they would locate a specific SKU number in a database, then look for the containers marked with that number in the yard to find their next clue.

Most of the teams chose to beach it, except for The Geeks and Team Elle Woods . . . that is, until the ditzy Southern Belles went in the wrong direction and ended up at the boat-lined beach anyway, at which point they just decided to roll some boats to the water with the rest of the teams rather than trying to make up for lost time. The Geeks rocked the docket challenge hardcore, just like I knew they would in my own geek heart, and they gained a lead over all of the boat-rolling teams as they nabbed the first taxi Parque de Vaquejada. In their honor, I proclaim them King of the Lab!

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="I declare you the once and future Kings of the Lab!"][/caption]

Divorcees Kelly and Kristy managed to provide me with some evidence as to exactly why they are divorced as they rolled the boat into the water and then proceeded to dig around in the sand for a container that they were certain they needed to find. After digging for a long time to no avail, they decided to head off to the taxi stop anyway, assuming that they would simply incur a penalty for not fully completing the task. In the car, they actually stopped to read the instructions for a minute and realized that the container they were looking for was part of the other challenge. I'm sure that their radical misinterpretation of events and directions might be one reason why they are no longer married, don't you think?

Meanwhile, as all the other teams began to complete their boat rolling and get into taxis, Terrence the Almighty Douchenozzle and his Browbeaten Girlfriend Sarah tried to take the longer, less hilly route to the taxi stop and ended up getting totally lost in Caife. Terrence wailed and cursed the heavens, prompting me to yell at my television, "Why don't you just go cry out your mangina, Terrence?" Team after team passed up their cries for help until Toni and Dallas stopped to instruct them where to head back and get a taxi.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="She's only smiling because he'll kill her if she doesn't."][/caption]

I actually get this really icky feeling about Terrence most of the time, like one day he's just going to hit Sarah for no reason other than his own anger. During the boat-rolling challenge, he chastised her for complaining that she was tired, indicating that it was her own fault for doing push-ups in the morning before they left for the airport . . . as though rolling a 440 lb. boat into the water couldn't possibly be the real reason for her fatigue. Terrence is a dick, and I really hope Sarah breaks up with him by the end of the race.

At Parque de Vaquejada, the teams encountered a roadblock in which they had to locate the name of their next destination written on a 600 ft. wall. Mark and Bill got there just before Ken and Tina and immediately The Geeks devised the best solution with which to solve the puzzle: write down all 11 place names and just read them off to the painter, one-by-one, until you arrive at the right one. Mark, being a nice geek, gave Tina a hint about how to solve it, but not before making sure his own hide was safe and had a clue in his hand.

Many of the other teams seemed to struggle with this, like Evil Spawn Ryan and Starr and the Jewish Frat Brothers, whom Phil has dubbed Team Superbad, for some reason. I will not adhere to your names, Phil! They are clearly wearing their AEPi t-shirts and shall only be known to me as Team AEPi or the Jewish Frat Boys, because while one of them might easily be compared to Jonah Hill, the other is certainly not Michael Cera. Ryan tried to cheat off everyone else and then promised Frat Boy 1 that he would come back and tell him the answer, but instead ran off with his wicked sister to get ahead of them. Clearly, Team Elle Woods also experienced some difficulty with this part of the race since they kept insisting to one another that "you don't even have to know Spanish" to read what was on the wall. Well, my Southern Belles, of course you don't. BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING PORTUGUESE! I really, really cannot wait for the race to leave Brazil so that people stop thinking that Spanish is the official language of Brazil! It's driving me crazy.

The team that had the worst time with this challenge was arguably the Divorcees, who provided yet another but of evidence that their collective stupidity is the reason they are no longer married when they misread the directions that told them to instruct their cab to wait and spent a good length of time trying to flag down passing taxis on the road after they got their clue before finally realizing that their taxi was back in the yard with everyone else's taxis. Good job, ladies. You're both such great catches. Truly. And by the way, I hate your "My White T is Green" shirts. I'm sure you really don't care that much about the environment because I bet that shirt is neither recycled nor made in the USA.

Once they completed the Road Block, the teams taxied to Cidade da Crianca, a children's park in the middle of Fortelaza, their Pit Stop for this leg of the race. Mark and Bill came in second place as Ken and Tina's taxi edged them out of the lead. I really wanted to proclaim King of the Lab again in their honor, but they seemed rather humbled about their second place finish, although they did covet the ATVs that Mom and Dad won. Terrence and Sarah came in 3rd place, followed by Aja and Ty and benevolent Dallas and Toni. All three teams shared a massive group hug at the mat, expressing joy in how well they helped each other and hugging out their issues. I fully expected Terrence to cry out his mangina again, actually. Ryan and MonStarr came in 6th place, Idiot Divorcees Kelly and Kristy came in 7th place by some miracle, the AEPi Brothers came in 8th with Team Elle Woods in 9th. Sadly, Stephanie and Anthony, who were counting on TAR prize money to be able to get married, were booted from the race.

My advice to them is to just spend $50 to get a marriage license, have a civil ceremony and then have a big wedding later if they're really worried about not having the cash to get hitched. Get married on the DL now, enjoy the tax breaks and put that extra cash toward a big party at a later date. Go forth, Anthony and Stephanie, and get yourselves a marriage license. The rest will follow.

No big deal!"]<img title="Stephanie and Anthony" src="http://wwwimage.cbs.com/cms/files/images/primetime/amazing_race/13/anthony_stephanie.jpg" alt="See? This could be your wedding photo!
The Husband:

Each season of TAR has at least one. You know them. The bitchy couple who you just don’t want to hear bitch at each other anymore. There are three tiers of bitchy couples.

Tier 1: Sometimes it’s just the fault of one of the team members who just won’t stop complaining (Flo of s3’s “Flo & Zach”)

Tier 2: Sometimes they’re both bad people but one is just that much worse (Mirna of s6/s11’s “Charla & Mirna” and Colin of s5’s “Colin & Christie”)

Tier 3: Sometimes they’re both just horrible, despicable people (s6’s “Jonathan & Victoria,” whose relationship was so violent and sour they appeared on the only Dr. Phil special I ever watched).

This season we have, obviously, Terrence the Almighty Douchenozzle and his Browbeaten Girlfriend Sarah. While last week they seemed to fall into the “Flo & Zach” camp of just Terrence the Almight Douchenozzle being a complete fucking prick, we simply had a Tier 1 situation where, maybe, the couple would learn to deal with each other. Witness Flo & Zack, who despite all their issues and all Flo’s absolutely earsplitting shrieks and complaints back in the early season actually finished in first place. Why? Because Zack was such a cool motherfucker.

This week, unfortunately, we’ve moved into Tier 2, in which we witness the assumed dissolution of a relationship. It’s always worse when the man is the emotionally sensitive one because their bitching and crying is seen from other teams as terrifying brute male dominance gone completely haywire (his airport rage) instead of just frustration. (Look at the Geeks for a lesson in how to stay graceful and funny under pressure.) Thank God Terrence the Almighty Douchenozzle and his Browbeaten Girlfriend Sarah aren’t married, because now there’s at least hope that they will realize they are completely incompatible and break up, like s6’s “Adam & Rebecca” (Rebecca, btw, is a cast member of Work Out now and is apparently secretly dating Jackie from the show).

For those interested in car wrecks, I can say with almost 80% certainty that the couple will move into Tier 3 if they make it far enough, and let’s face it, there’s almost always a hateful team in the Top 4.

The second episode of The Amazing Race

"Do You Like American Candy?"

October 5th, 2008

The second episode of The Amazing Race is always one of the most awkward: there isn't yet any really compelling stories yet between teams, within teams, or within the race itself. And yet, unlike the first episode, there isn't the need for a lot of exposition, so the producers have to hope that in the distance between one spot and another in close proximity the racers fall into every possible cliche.

Well, the producers lucked out: while some of it disheartened me to see, as personal favourites took a turn for the race, everything from airline drama to clue misreading turned up for a leg that, even without anything close to a suspenseful ending, told us a lot of things about these teams, defined some new relationships between them, and even gave us a couple of lessons about Karma. In the end, it's an entertaining second leg that bodes well for the season ahead, if not quite blowing us away with anything particularly mindblowing.

Salvador to Fortaleza

While we get to see a bit more of the teams we ignored last week in the early going (Anthony and Stephanie get a beat, Marisa and Brooke get to give out some candy for the episode title, etc.), it's really all about the two teams with the most potential to implode: Ken and Tina, our separated couple trying to decide their future, and Terence and Sarah, who during the pit stop nearly broke up over her talking to other teams instead of him (since it was a sign that she didn't want to be there with him).

This isn't all that entertaining - as the teams travel to the airport in order to travel from one Brazilian airport to another, Tina is the first to one ticket counter and, facing a flight five hours later, manages to persist her way into making the airline switch from a tiny plane into a larger one. It's logical economics: you have a bunch of people about to take a plane, so why not use a bigger one if you have it available? Tina, though, latches onto this as being the most amazing thing ever done, and uses it for the purposes of trying to move to the front of the line, and trying to get people to "owe her one."

What this really shows us, though, is how smart Nick and Starr are. Yeah, I know I spent all of last week singing their praises, but they demonstrate here that they know when to be bullish and when not: they work with Ken and Tina to get the flight together, but they're quick not to join in on the drama in line between Terence and Tina, even commenting on it to other racers as if to say "Wow, look how crazy they are being!" It's a smart strategy because it means they can have the benefits of working together without being lumped in with their behaviour.

Detour: Beach It or Docket

It's your traditional options: there is a very physical option, and one that involves absolutely no physicality. Only Mark and Bill, seeing the word "Computer" and getting very excited about it, take the latter option, what I call the "The Wire Season Two" option: searching through a list of storage containers at a shipyard and then searching for it. It gets them out in first place, actually, which goes to show you that there was another option here.

The Beach It option, for the most part, shows which teams are strong, and leaves plenty of space for some mistakes. Nick and Starr waltz through the detour from a physical and mental perspective, leaving first despite arriving in about sixth. Terence and Sarah, meanwhile, demonstrate their inability to pay much attention when they walk an inordinately long distance away from their Taxis. Their desperation is kind of endearing, if by endearing you mean pathetic and sad.

Then you have Kelly and Christie, who happen to fail miserably at clue reading by trying to find their container, as in their giant shipping container, at the opposite detour. It's a sad moment as they just keep digging in the sand in vain, presuming that everyone else just isn't bothering to follow the rules. That such a simple task could be such a liability to two separate teams demonstrates just how much of a mental game (even a really subtle mental game) the Race can be.

Roadblock: In Plain Sight

Okay, so let's be plain: it's a really, really stupid roadblock. The point is for them to keep things simple, in other words just listing off every possible place on the board instead of actually taking time in order to think about what they're doing. There's some sort of line about this being an example of "Embracing the laid back culture of Btazil," but a lazy and thoughtless roadblock by any other name...you get the idea.

The only piece of really interesting story to come out of this is the extremely entertaining karma that is Kelly and Christie repeating, in unison, "we have learned to read the clue," and then proceeding to not read the clue as it relates to having their taxi stay. The fact that their cab was sitting waiting for them right around the corner was the perfect karmic statement - hopefully, this time, they'll learn their lesson.

This was also the point where Nick began to demonstrate that, while he's playing a smart game in many ways with Starr, he does need to be a little bit less cutthroat. He ignores both Sarah and Andrew, after agreeing to help them, because he feels that they have no information to offer him. As much as Terence and Sarah bother me, her ability to finish the task before Nick is a bit of a karmic statement in itself: he was overthinking it, and perhaps maybe overthinking the game a bit considering his desire to create these strategic partnerships entirely for his own benefit (In other words, Nick, turn it down a notch. Please. I kind of like you guys, but this didn't help that.)

The Teams

Toni and Dallas - These two are going to do themselves some good here, especially since both of them seem to be really into enjoying the race. Their willingness to help Terence and Sarah shows that they're willing to help people out, and her genuine excitement on the dune buggy (And his "Way to go, Mom" thereafter) was the kind of thing where watching them could actually be fun regardless of the task, and because of, as opposed to in spite of, their personalities.

Marisa and Brooke - The two southern socialites are going to have some problems in this game, considering their struggles here. They go to the wrong detour by mistake, and I do commend them for pushing their way through the log challenge even against their physical difficulties. This being said, I do think that the more physical challenges will stress them, and they'd be smart to maybe strike some friendships with other teams in order to bring out the parts of their personalities (see: Candy) that could benefit them on the Race.

Nick and Starr - I'm worried: after being so good last week, these two were a bit of a mess this time around. For every time Nick's gameplay was smart, like not losing his cool over Sarah losing her cool when their taxi driver was lost, he was being a jerk about her shouting during the Roadblock, or interviewing about how he didn't care about leaving some other guy in the dust if he didn't have any information to offer him. It's a vert short-sighted view of the race, the kind of living in the moment that will test their relationships with everyone and everything around them. I think they're very strong, and their attitudes in some cases quite good, but their competitive nature is going to be an issue.

Mark and Bill - While Ken and Tina may have made it to the Pit Stop first after there was some bag rippage, one cannot say that Mark and Bill didn't play this leg the smartest: first out of both tasks, the two are certainly overcoming any physical obstacles and are using, as they say, a lack of having to live with each other after the Race in order to be willing to challenge one another on things. They're a team to watch, even with next week's alcohol sickness.

Everyone else - Ken and Tina continue to bicker, and Tina continues to demonstrate that she's very angry at him about a lot of different things; Terence got hit in the head by the back door of a cab, and then eventually got rebuffed by Sarah when he tried to kiss her (with an "emblamatic" kiss) when she was rushing to do the roadblock; Kelly and Christie are already starting to see Terence as their simile of choice for describing their ex-husbands; Aja and Ty are smart to not listen to Tina's line about owing them, but they do need to talk to other teams a bit more; Dan and Andrew still aren't living up to either their nickname or their pre-race designation as villains, which makes me think they'll be sticking around for a while.

The Eliminated Team

Anthony and Stephanie were, without question, the weakest link. Their journey in this episode was perpetually being in last place, never moving above the pack, and always finding themselves struggling from behind. Neither has much of a personality, and their story (that they're too poor to get married) never really resonated. This was most apparent when they started going into the "Look how poor Brazil is!" moment, but there was no heart in it: even though she was reflecting poorly on herself for it, forgive me for not empathizing with a couple because they can only afford to live in an apartment and not a house. They never seemed to interact with other teams in any interesting ways, so their departure should have little impact in the race as a whole.

Cultural Observations

Loved Terence's reaction to getting hit in the head with the taxi door, if only for its ludicrous: he had her blot it, and then blow on it, before finally bandaging it. I also loved his "Don't you see me bleeding?!" followed by her very observant "...no." It's clear that she is going to be jetting out of this relationship after the race considering his complete and total mood swings between demanding and overly kissy.

Love Marisa and Brooke getting mooned on the beach for giving them a high society wave: they were acting a bit like beauty queens in that moment, except that compared to Dustin and Kandice they just can't measure up. They aren't the kind of people who have used their beauty for any sort of life experience, but almost to avoid them: seeing them classify themselves as "daredevils" for finishing the Detour tells me that they have a really good chance to use the race as a growth exercise. And yes, Marisa or Brooke since I can't tell them apart, you DID see their "butt."

Many environmentally concern people do not want there to be offshore drilling (especially their offshore) because of the visibility of the oil platforms in the distance. Living in Santa Barbara I have to agree that offshore oil platforms, like the one above, are lit on the horizon like a festive christmas tree. They do tend to impinge on sweeping oceanic views of the horizon.

Locally at least the oil platforms are associated with the abundance of tar on and around the beaches. Go for a barefoot walk in the sand on a UCSB beach and you will end up with at least one patch of tar clinging to the sole of your foot. If the oil drilling is what caused this tar I would be completely against them. Except they don’t cause it. The tar seeps naturally out of the ground and floats its way to shore.

The tar and the oil platforms are caused by the same thing.

Those who cry foul at oil platforms on the horizon turn around at declaim those who object to wind farms being built out at sea. If you object to offshore wind farms for ascetic reasons you become an environmentally insensitive kitten juggler (an amusing if dangerous sport). Yet if you decry offshore drilling for the impinged upon horizon then you are for the environment.

I realize that there are real legitimate reasons to support and object both and I those arguments I can accept. But when the same argument is both embraced and vilified in both cases I have to laugh.

Dolphin powered turbines would be way more efficient.

OOOH!

THe race is back!

Oh, this just makes me burst into oodles of joy. There's something about this show which I just can't help but be madly in love with.

So, we hve 11 new pairings, new roads to cover and the most delicious eyebrow pop to ever appear in the history of the race. I'm telling you, I think his eyebrow disappeared into his hair....word on the street says it's still trying to find its way home.

so we have some itneresting couples this time around, and as there are too many people running around in a short amount of time, and I have way too much to do today, this is going to end up a more concise review of the episode as a whole.

So first things first, come on show, can't you make the start more interesting? One of 2 flights in? And you already know which one will land first? Oh I miss the days of the second flight landing first, and working out who was actually smart enough to ask!

At any rate, I was expecting the old hippie couple out first. We barely heard from them, and they were just too damn slow. Occasionally, I've been disappointed with the first ones out, in cases where it was pure stupidity or just dumb lukc, but this was a pure and simple case of too slow, too ambivalent and necessary. Goodbye, old hippies.

Nick and Starr, the brother and sister team, are lright, even if they do have slight incestuous overtones a la Blake and Paige. Which I'm all for (not in the incestuous sense, mind you!) Because we haven't had a lovey-dovey brother sister couple who were good enough to screw with people. Just lose the mom and dad thing, because that is even creepier.

Love, love, lvoe the comic guys, and nothing to do with the fact one of them is the treasurer ( i believe) for comic-con - on my lsit for future events i must go to (especially when all ym favourite shows converge...gah why did i not attempt it this year????) They did extremely well, coming in 4th, which severely suprised me, I was dreading oh we're such jolly geeky guys who can't run and end up last. Keep it up guys, all my hopes and dremas are riding on you (which means I will be crushed, because in 12 seasons, I've only supported theoverall winners once. 1 out of 12 does not bode well, people).

the frat boys bore me as do the "southern belles". Gah, they seem to be there to feed the annoyingly young, stupid and ignorant quota, which just pisses me off. Please, there have to be intelligent women applying for this show - why don't you pick more of them? Why do we have to suffer through vapid blondes wearing hot pink, who are constantly surprised by the fact somehwere in the world people don't speak english?

And I know the strong alpha males they've had (in the intelligent form, as in the first 3 seasons) ended up winning by long miles....but still...pretty please? If only for the hotness factor.

Moving swiftly onto Toni and Dallas, mother and son...and what a son! Can I congratulate this woman on the fine specimen she has raised? Yum. That's all I have. Yum.

They seem very ncie and sweet - i'm waiting for the claws to come out and all the reverted angst and trauma of the teenage years to come spilling out in heated moments while lost in the rambling cities of Europe. Gah, please say it is so!

The seperated couple bore me slightly, mainly because I'm also sick of couples coming on this show to "make or break" their relationship. She obviously hasn't forgiven him, he's obviously a dick, and while they may work well together, she ain't going to elt it go. Ever. He'll be paying for it. forever. better to let this one be, i think.

And the other "make or break" couple? So fr boring. I guess they're holding out on these couples, waiting for the fireworks later on down the track. But please, don't go on a reality show to try and convince your boyfriend to marry you. Particularly while saying if we win, we can get married. He'll purposefully lose to make sure it doesn't happen! DUH!

The long-distance couple are really, really cute, but so far have barely seen nything from them. I want to move them into my lvoe pile, so we'll see what happens over the coming weeks.

WHich brings us to what is it, Terence and Sarah? Ugh. He's an ass of new proportions (where the hell do they find these people?) Controlling, superior and a dick. And she's, well she has issues of her own. I felt kind of sorry for her this episode, wanting to screa at her to run, run as fast as she can. Except she just startes adoringly at him when he yells at her.I have a feeling they'll be showing her bad side next episode - she seems to have issues. Whetehr they stem from him or not, who knows? But this newly dating couple needs to break up soon. And lose soon. Or do we want the around for the entertainment factor?

So, we start in Brazil, ah, um pais de beleza, comida e palavras em portugues. And funnily enough, 2 people can actually speak portuguese! (1 point in Sarah's direction, minus for Terence for yelling at her when she's speaking in Portuguese...dude, she's getting help, why do you need her to translate? Terrified she's telling this other woman you're an ass?) The other is one of the comic guys! I love you more.

That's about it....the first episode is always too rapido and frenzied tog et a good indication of anyone..so let's wait until the next one, where we only have to suffer 10 couples, we have airport drama and we answer all the important question...

who will be eliminated.......next?

tar
possiamo realizzare questa operazione.

Il comando è il seguente:

tar -czf /percorso/backup/nome_backup$(date +"%Y%m%d").tar.gz /percorso/origine/

nano backup_compresso_home.sh

Inserire il seguente contenuto

#!/bin/sh
#esegue il backup compresso della home. notare che il percorso di origine si trova alla fine del comando
echo "backup in corso..."
tar -czf /percorso/backup/nome_backup$(date +"%Y%m%d").tar.gz /percorso/origine/
echo "backup eseguito!"

CTRL+X
e
CTRL+Y

Rendere eseguibile lo script

$ chmod 755 backup_compresso_home.sh

$ ./backup_compresso_home.sh

Dear All,

Greetings. I hope you are continuing to enjoy the summer. My summer has turned out to be as lively as the academic year usually is. Let me briefly report.

* Last week I got together with my undergraduate classmates in a Shiraz University reunion held in San Diego! San Diego and Shiraz are both beautiful cities, in different ways. We had a panel organized on Rumi's poetry. Besides that, I read poetry to music.

* Another exciting piece of news is that I have accepted to be the honorary Co-Chair of a vibrant emerging organization called "Iranians For Peace" (IFP). Our Board consist of five very able and dedicated women of Iranian heritage (more to be added). The main goal of this non-partisan group is to prevent war through promoting peaceful cultural education on Iran. On some level, this is what I have been engaged in for a sometime. These windows are an example of that. I hope you get a chance to visit our website, stay abreast of the activities, and provide us with your support: http://www.iraniansforpeace.net.

|

* On the subject of my summer activities, let me give the links to two articles which I have recently published. On July 16, I had an editorial in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the link is: "A 21st-century warning from a 13th-century poet."

* And on August 2nd, I had a piece published in the online newsletter Counterpunch: http://www.counterpunch.org/keshavarz08022008.html. I hope you find them useful!

Who Are Iranian Americans?

* Enough of my activities. Many Americans are working hard to bring about an understanding of the diversity of Iranians in Iran and in the US. Watch this fascinating clip which was sent to me by my friend, and a board member of the IFP, Leila Zand: http://www.searchles.com/channels/show/4563 (or view below!).
|

|

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="238" caption="Arsalan Kazemi (above) is the first Iranian to receive a NCAA basketball scholarship (image courtesy of www.sportsillustrated.cnn.com)"][/caption]

What do Do Iran and America Exchange?

* Sometimes it appears that Iran and the U.S. only trade harsh political attacks. The truth is more interesting exchanges take place as well, but somehow do not qualify as news. Once I reported in these windows that the American women softball team was in Iran for a match with their Iranian counterparts. A lot of you were surprised. Well, here is another fun headline which does not make it to your evening news: An Isfahani young man, Arsalan Kazemi, the first Iranian to get an NCAA scholarship to play basketball in the US. Take a look at him in action. Thanks to my friend Omid Safi who has shared this interesting piece of news: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/luke_winn/07/15/kazemi/index.html

* Before I put the finishing touches to this window, I recieved a great clip from another friend Ladan Foroughi-Hedayati related to the subject of Iranian basketball. It is an MSNBC report on the recent visit of the Iranian Basketball team to the U.S. The report is great in showing a side of Iran that we rarely see in our media here. However, sadly, the report follows the general tradition of connecting all Iran related news to the American hostages. We even listen to President Bush declaring Iran to be a member of the axis of evil before we see a few minutes of the game. The formula prevents one from seeing the humanity or normality of Iran because we are first told about all the possible differences, disagreements, and political conflicts. Still, I hope you enjoy the basketball part: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25796284#25796284.

Current Issues

* Speaking of political conflict, despite the apparent calm, the predictions concerning the Iran/US relations are not hopeful. What you hear in the mainstream media is that Iran is about to turn down the EU package of incentives and there should be more UN sanctions. However, the view from the other side is different. Take a look at this article discussing the views of Francis Boyle, the influential intentional lawyer, to get a different perspective on the situation: http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/07/29/10672/.

* There is an interesting clip, that my friend Bahar Bastani sent this week. It highlights a part of the famous interview that Mr. Mike Wallace conducted with President Ahmadinejad which has not been included in the official broadcast of the interview. Since Mr. Ahmadinejad 's words are often used as justification for sanctions or possible attacks on Iran, it is important to know exactly what he has said regardless of our personal interpretations of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onNzrNEFs1E (or view it below!).

|

|
* And there is yet more grim news from Mr. Seymour Hersh. This is his latest reference to a strong tendency among certain members of the current U.S. administration to create a clash that would lead to a war with Iran. Matt Miller has kindly shared this piece with me. Thanks Matt! http://www.truthout.org/article/hersh-cheney-plan-creating-false-flag-attack

* If you are familiar with Persian culture, or have been following these windows regularly, you know that painting is among the most popular art forms in Iran. I have usually been sending you paintings of Iranian women, in part because it counters the myth that they are subjugated, inactive, or unable to express their creative talents. In this window, however, I want to introduce the works of young man, an amazing master painter whose works have been getting him international fame in the recent years, Iman Maleki (1976-). Maleki has experimented with a variety of styles but he is mostly a realist whose works have a strong cultural flavor. Click here to see a slide show of some of his tremendous work: Iman Maleki Paintings. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoy this window.

Until the next one,
I Wish you all the Best,

Closing arguments

Michael Rhodes smoked cigarettes for 50 years, got lung cancer and died; we all know what happened here. We also all know this death. Everybody in this room knows somebody who has fought this same battle and dies … agonizing, brutal, excruciating …

But … emotion has no play here. Michael Rhodes was eleven years old when he started smoking, it was 1948. At that time, there was no known risk, and even if there were, at eleven he certainly lacked the capacity to assume it. And after that, he was addicted. They manufacture them to be addictive.

In just the last few years, they’ve increased the amount of nicotine in the average cigarette by 11.6% to make them even more addictive [1]. Recently, we learned that tobacco companies have been adding an ammonia-based compound to cigarettes for years to increase absorption of nicotine [2]. It’s basically the same principle used in crack cocaine.

And let’s look at the obscene strategy they’ve employed here. Smoking may cause cancer, but it didn’t cause this particular cancer. It wasn’t our cigarettes, or it was genetic, or asbestos or a paper mill. Never do they take responsibility ever. And God forbid, if you sue them, they’ll bury you and your lawyer. They might even depose your doctor to death, for good measure. All their insidious methods and cunning corporate tactics aren’t just history, it’s what they continue to do now, today. Because the tobacco industry is like a nest of cockroaches, they will always find a way to survive.

They still go after kids with one strategy after another. They put up brightly colored ads at kid’s eye level in convenience stores. They hire gorgeous twenty-somethings to frequent popular venues and seduce young adults into attending lavish corporate-sponsored parties. Cockroaches will always find a way.

They can’t advertise on TV but they’ve hired PR agencies to hook them up with the film industry. And it’s worked. Researchers estimate that smoking in movies delivers nearly 400,000 adolescent smokers every year [3]. Every time you try to kill the cockroach, it finds another way. It has to, because when you make a product that kills off your consumers, you have to find a way to recruit new customers.

They’ve now got a new feminized version of the macho Camel brand using slogans like “lite” and “luscious” with hot pink packaging. Virginia Slims advertised their “thin cigarette”. Allure Magazine did a whole spread on the cigarette diet [4]. They use social and psychological profiling [5], targeting potential smokers by gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, socioeconomic groups … cockroaches don’t discriminate.

Their CEO comes into this courtroom gloating over their anti-smoking campaign, which is designed to get kids to smoke. In 2003, they spent more than 15 billion on advertising and promotion [6]. That’s a 225% increase from 1998, and they have the audacity to declare they’re trying to discourage smoking. This is not how corporations with a conscience behave.

How in God’s name are cigarettes even legal, can anybody tell me that? They are a deadly concoction of carcinogens that damage every single organ in your body. Why do we not ban them? Because it’s a free country, because freedom of choice is an American ideal worth somebody dying every six seconds? How can any company, especially one with such a conscience no less, knowingly manufacture a product that poisons its users? … and make that product look cool and hip and sexy and fun, so they can get children. How can any attorney defend a company that would do such a thing and how could any society tolerate it, but we do.

There is no conscience at big tobacco. There is no conscience in Washington, which has been bought and paid for by this industry. Conscience has to come from you, the jury. If real regulation is to happen, it has to come from you. People are smoking day after day after day and dying and dying and dying and the tobacco companies keep getting richer and richer. Last year alone, they made 12 billion dollars in profits [7]. How can that be?

How can that be?

I don't know how to call this post. I have a problem with patch (I'm too bad to get it t work properly) so I want to export a list of the files I have modified between two subversion commits. This is how I do it for now (I'm sure it's extremely perfectible).

svn co http://mysvnproject/trunk/project@1

This gets me the first version

svn update > diff-files.txt

This updates my copy to the latest version, but most importantly, it generates a list of files that have been updated or added. Something like this:

U whoisonline.php
U main/blog/blog.php
U main/auth/my_progress.php
A main/auth/user_list.php
U main/auth/profile.php
A main/auth/profile2.php

Now I want to edit the resulting file and remove the first characters of each line. Can do that with VIM's command:

:% s/^[AU] //

Now I have a file that is a list of only the files I want. Let's put them into a TAR archive:

tar zcvf diff-files.tgz `cat diff-files.txt` --exclude-vcs

The exclude-vcs option is a genius option that allows me to ignore all the .svn, .CVS or whatever versioning system files there are.

You now have a diff-files.tgz file containing all the files you need to get your "pseudo-patch" working.

As I mentioned before, it had been close to a year since the last time TAR was on which made it all the more enjoyable to have it back on tv last night. From my initial thoughts of the teams based on their videos, it wasn't too far off from what I expected. The most surprising thing was how annoying Terrence & Sarah actually were. I really liked Nick & Starr which was one of my pre-season faves anyway. The hippies didn't bother me as much as I thought they might but then again they were the team that was eliminated.

I was actually kind of hoping Team Superbad would have had more trouble on the road block than what they did. I would not have minded at all if they had ended up being the first ones eliminated. I have a feeling Mark & Bill will bother me more nad more the longer they stay in the race. What's even worse though, is I think they could actually win the race.

Nick & Starr did really well which was great to see however, I was a little surprised that they decided to align themselves with Ken & Tina. So far, the alliance is working but I don' t think it will last long though. Alliances in TAR are notorious for crumbling pretty quickly.

All in all, I'd say it was a great premiere!

Pressemitteilung, 25. September 2008

tar -cvzf - /home | split -b 2000m - /mnt/big.tar

If you want to log the process, use this command:

(tar -cvzf - /home | split -b 2000m - /mnt/big.tar) > log.txt 2> log.txt

So to extract the split archives, use this:

cat big.tar* | tar -xzvf - # to extract

cat big.tar* | tar -zx hello.txt -vf - # to extract only one file from the archives

The thirteenth season of The Amazing Race premieres this Sunday and I couldn't be more excited about it! It's been close to a year since the previous season of The Amazing Race ended and I've really missed watching it. This show is actually the second reality show I ever watched - the first being Survivor. Season four was the first season of The Amazing Race I've watched and I haven't stopped watching since then!

I've seen the Meet The Cast video and the individual cast videos at CBS.com and it looks like a pretty interesting group of people. After watching the videos, I'd have to say that Marisa & Brooke and Nick & Starr are my favourites so far. I think I'll probably like Kelly & Christy but I have a feeling Kelly & Christy and Marisa & Brooke may butt heads.

Right off the bat, I can tell that I won't like The Hippies (Anita & Arthur), Team Superbad (Andrew & Dan) and probably the mother-son team (Dallas & Toni). Whenever there has been a hippie team on the show, I have never liked them for one reason or another. Andrew & Dan already think that they will be able to "overpower" people with their travel knowledge. If there's one thing I cannot stand, it's cockiness. I think Dallas & Toni may annoy me but probably Toni more than Dallas. I'm not sure why exactly but I just get that vibe from watching their video. There's also Ken (the ex-NFL player) & Tina who I'm still on the fence with.

Here's the meet the cast video from CBS for anyone who hasn't seen it:
