I shall start by giving you a little background into why I decided to write this blog...

Not too long ago, I was made redundant and had to get a new job for the first time in 13-14 years. I ended up taking a position with a Scanning Bureau who were looking for a confident VB/Web developer. They not only scan documents, but they also have a web based tracking system, which has an Access Database on the back of it. This tracking system is what I work with most days now and I find it a pleasant challenge. It's currently used primarily to track Pipeline construction done by several companies, including BP.

One of the programmers here wrote a little tool in VB6 that reads a text file (Database Dictionary) and generates a database based on Table and Field information that reside in this text file. He told others that it wasn't possible to achieve in ADO, but my suspicion is that he couldn't find the information on how to do it and gave up trying...

I've started to move things forward here at an alarming rate that everyone here seems to be extremely surprised with and have taken over quite a few projects, including this Database Generator application.

I have modified it to fix a few problems and added a few new features, but I'm trying to move everything out of VB6 and into VB.net. Most of the projects here are written in VB6 and would really benefit from upgrading.

So, not only am I converting the Database Generator to VB.net and ADO.net, but I'm also attempting to write a "Dictionary Regenerator". This will recreate the Database Dictionary file from an existing database.

My reason for doing this is because we had a database that had tables added and deleted, fields added, deleted and changed, by hand from within Access, rather than modifying the Database Dictionary and running the Database Generator on it.

This left us with a problem recently, when we decided to drastically change the data structure in such a way that it would have been a long, fairly difficult and tedious task to do, so I modified the Database Generator to do it for us.

This ment that one of our programmers had to recreate the missing Dictionary file by hand. It probably took him as long to do, as it would have to make the changes, but at least we now have the Dictionary file to use for future modifications. :-D

I had already written a class for use with several other projects that retrieved lists of tables, queries and fields, returned DataSets and allowed data modification using ADO.net. It also had a very simple Dictionary file generator that I used to import a very old database into a new database using our current database structure.

I decided that it would be a bloody good idea to enhance it in order to upgrade the Database Generator and to prove to all that it is possible to do in ADO.net.

So off I went...

The first snag I hit was how to retrieve the SQL string from an existing query. I searched the internet high and low for any information on how to achieve this, but came up empty. I posted the question on a few forums, got tired of waiting for a reply and attempted to work it out myself.

It didn't take me long and I wish I hadn't wasted the two days of Googling... I basically stumbled upon the solution by accident.

I then needed information on field types, lengths and various other properties. Again I headed for Google, and came up empty, but this time I gave up looking after a very short time and went back to using my own brain.

Which has brought me here, where I decided to start my own Blog, write about this hard to find information, make it that little bit easier to find and understand how to achieve it.

My next entry will cover how I achieved this and a sample of the code I used.

Positioning Footer at bottom of page using Tables 100%

I have struggled to do this very thing using css and it can be done and works very well. I am speaking of positioning a footer for a web site at the bottom so it sticks at the bottom and doesnt ride up if you dont have enough content to completely fill the page.

CSS offers many ways of doing this with or without hacks, but if you are creating templates for server side script based web pages like companies that offer web pages with limited customization then you will be easily frustrated when using css based workarounds as the server side coding may interfere with the end result of your template.

If you need to use Tables for your website and want the footer to stick at the very bottom on all pages, this can be done very easily.

I use the latest Dreamweaver for all websites i create. First you want to open a new html and make sure to go to Edit>Preferences>New Document and change "New Document Type" to HTML 4.01 Transitional instead of using strict. This tends to be more compatible with alot of the browsers out there today.

Now create a new HTML page and in design view click on "Insert" and then choose "Table". For width choose whichever width you want your webpage to be and apply any padding or spacing you want. Click ok and your table will be created.

Now center it if you want it centered and go to Code view.

In code view you will see something like this:

if you go to design view the table will stretch to the bottom of the screen now.

Simply right click inside the table and choose Table>Split Cell.

Split the cell into 2 Rows.

in design mode you will see now 2 rows visible.

Left click in the top row and at the bottom of the screen under properties where it says "Vert" choose "Top" from the dropdown menu.

Also Right click in the bottom row now and then under properties "Vert" dropdown choose "Bottom"

Now all content can be placed in the top row and your webpage footer info can go in the bottom row and will always stay fixed to the bottom of the page.

The last sentence seems important and I'm not sure what it's saying -- is it that our furniture takes its form from natural forms (as opposed to geometrical forms) and so looks better among nature? --Not sure; but would add that tables meant for indoors frequently do look better outside than tables (picnic tables) meant for the out-doors do; as if, in making things that can withstand the elements, art least comports with them.

New table and chairs

Way back when in .. oh .. 1991 I bought my wife (of a little more than a year) a new kitchen table. It was solid oak. 48 inches round with 2 leaves and 2 solid oak chairs. It had a beautiful solid (not hollow) pedestal base with three clawed feet. Over time we added to it 6 other oak chairs with caned seats (not my choice but more affordable than solid seats). I bought that table because I knew it would last forever. I'm like that in every major purchase. I pay more and buy the best I can buy within my price range. I knew this thing would outlast me, my wife and even my kids. But I never took into account that it would outlast my wife's taste in furniture.

So with wallet in hand and no kids in tow we looked at tables and chairs back in April. And we found a great set in cherry. It matches the rest of the furniture we seem to have acquired over the last 6 months. And with that oak table and the chairs being sold off all of our enduring oak is gone. Well not all of it. I still have my mom's oak desk and we have the 2 oak "freezer chest" style end-tables. And my hand built fireplace and mantle are made out of oak. I really do like the new table and chairs. But to be honest they are not all that practical. You cannot expand the table with leaves. And since it's "pub height" you cannot just pull up any old chair to it. But it is a pretty table and set of chairs. It really is. And it is beautifully made and is solid cherry wood. That was important And it was completely disassembled. Little did I realize when I bought it that I would spend 3 hours putting it together. What the hell is up with that! You would think for the price we paid for a solid cherry table and chairs, it would come pre-assembled. I was wrong. But now it's all together and it's done the right way. And I do take some pride in the fact that I was able to take poorly written instructions and understand them to the point of assembling the furniture. So now I can add carpenter to my resume ...

I think the funnest thing about Weddings is the favors...and hardly any of the brides I've worked with have really paid these much attention! It's so easy to make simple little things that make your guests see your appreciation for their support. Well, it's easy to make things and also easy to buy things.

I remember when I was a kid, I used to love going to weddings because I wanted those candied almonds or pink and white mints. I was totally bummed when I was stuck with a book mark or something that wasn't yummy! (:

If you're having an oriental theme, custom fortune cookies might be a great gift for your guests. I have a twisted sense of humor so I like the thought of saying something like "Thanks...for nothin'" or "This is a fake wedding, we actually signed the certificate months ago".
My cousin made these great favors for her sisters wedding a couple years ago. There were containers of mints, pink green and white, beside these cute little bags and the guests just scooped the candies into their own bag. Cara made TONS of these bags, but if she can do it alone (and pregnant at the time!) it's doable! I used to think that the candy was the best part of a wedding, but now that I've helped plan a few I find the best part is how it gives an excuse to get together as a group. We all get together, put decorations together, make the centre pieces, decorate the hall and it really builds a deeper relationship between the bride and her girls. It also gives her a time to have a cup of tea and just have fun!

The biggest piece of advice I give brides is this: Just think, all you really need at the wedding is you, the groom and the certificate. Have fun in the process!
