The countdown would appear to be well under 30 days now, but I can't be sure of the exact number since my countdown application is on Facebook and the computer which I now hate with a hatred so fierce is refusing me access. So I'm leaving sometime.. soonish. Probably.

It's well time for another update on the (mis)adventures of Miss Kerryn, still in the gloriously diverse land of Australia. I went down south for several nights to get away and rediscover my soul and all those good things. And I did. Much recommended. I caught up with a few mates (who graciously allowed me to crash on whatever bedding they had... ranging from 5 star hotels with included lotion bottles to the back of a caravan annex with an outdoor toilet) and was also able to get much time by myself. It sounds weird, but I love being alone. It's almost like a drug to me, I could easily get addicted to solitarity (that is SO not a word)... oh, solitude, that's the word. I would succeed way too successfully as a hermit me thinks, so a life in the 'burbs is probably good for me. Nevertheless, time on the stormy Margaret River beaches with my camera and the zillion Switchfoot cds I now own, allowed me to connect with the inner me. She's alot like the outer me, only quieter and more normal.

And that would be my last vacation until Canada.. although really SYG should count, there is nothing vacation-ie about running flat out with a tennis/soccer/volleyball for a whole long weekend. I'm getting old me thinks.

Plans to fly are almost done, it's only the details that I am onto now (nice feeling!!!). Details however, are not my friends, even though I'm neurotic about them. Putting them off for weeks is something I'm prone to do. NEVER AGAIN, I say to myself. And I try to force my personality to conform to a mould and get everything done but it's an effort. Much more relaxed to leave things til the last minute. That is of course, until the last minute when I thrive on the STRESS of the situation.

Like losing your passport...

*thinks*

.. no, that's completely different.

Hershey is helping me with all the forms I have to submit and photocopy and keep a track of. He's quite reliable, I should probably pay him more. Not that he did anything while I was away... ingrate.

Before I go, here's my plug. Get into Switchfoot. Oh, nah, don't worry about it, I might keep them for myself. Jon Foreman, the lead singer, has a new solo EP out, well, four actually and they rock my world. Well, the two I have. Anyways, that's what's playing in my Windows Media Player at the mo... what about yours?

Signing off,

Kerryn Switchfoot.

(that would be my name if I married them all. oh, come on, like you've never done that before)

I tried to capture the fun of summer with a lot of upbeat, hope-filled songs, from the past to the present, from the obscure to the well-known. The next summer mix CD, which should be out soon, has more searching, road trip-styled songs.

ROUND TWO
David Archuleta picked “With You” by Chris Brown.
His reason: “I wanted

ROUND TWO
David Archuleta picked "With You" by Chris Brown.
His reason: "I wanted to try something more youthful this week. It's something I haven't done yet, and I thought, 'Hey, it's worth a shot'."
I didn't quite know what to think about this one. After I finally got over the "lyrical flub" at the beginning and realized what he was really saying (much to my relief), it was just alright for me. It wasn't bad. Not at all. But it wasn't great either. I've heard some commenter's make fun of his dancing, and I think that's just tacky. His dancing was just fine to me. His vocals were good. But I guess it was just the type of song that got me. It just didn't seem like him. But that doesn't mean that the performance was bad. I don't think it was what the Archie fans have grown to love or expect from him, that's all.
Randy had the same reaction as I did; "I applaud you for trying something new and young; but I don't think it was the right song for you; it just wasn't you."
Paula thought he did a "Great job! It was perfect, at the right tone of your voice; You should be singing songs like this". She even offered some constructive criticism: "Watch...shorten the phrases a little bit."
Simon applauded the fact that David didn't do "A ballad", but thought it was rather like a Chihuahua trying to be a Tiger; just not really you. It was a bit awkward."

Syesha Mercado chose “Fever” by Peggy Lee. She "liked the vibe of the song."
I thought this was an interesting song choice...perhaps Syesha has taken the Broadway comments too seriously? Even saying that; I thought she did a great job. She is a really good performer; and I really liked it. She isn't my favorite contestant, but there's no denying that she is good. Well, the judges might deny it. I was very upset with them last night; I think they gave her a completely unfair, unjust critique (as follows).
Randy also thought it an "interesting song choice at this point. But you sang it amazingly well." (Yes, I know that was positive, Randy was good to her; the others weren't.)
Paula was also "Surprised at this song choice. I'm not sure it shows me who Syesha is as an artist..."
And Simon thought she would "Probably regret that[song choice] decision tomorrow, I think. It was quite a lame cabaret performance."

David Cook chose “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot. His explanation? "Lyrically, for me, it wrapped up this whole experience here; you know, 'Welcome to the planet. Welcome to existence. Everyone's here.' Like you[Ryan] said, going from being a 'bartender' to here...just seemed like the appropriate song for the appropriate moment."
This band is a favorite among my siblings...so I've heard this song MANY times. I thought it was a great choice for him. After hearing it, I wasn't so sure anymore. It was a little pitchy; but I did still like it. Was it only because it was David Cook who was singing? Maybe...I don't think I can call that one. :)
Randy said it was "A great song choice. Performance-wise...wasn't the best. A little pitchy."
Paula felt like she "only got the beginning of the song" and it left her wanting more.
Simon thought there wasn't "much to add to that. Not the best melodic song in the world. Everyone had just an OK middle round."

And no winners were called.

ROUND THREE
David Archuleta. The producers chose “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg for him to sing.
I thought this really was a GREAT song choice. The whole performance was very nice, vocals-yes! This was my favorite of Archie's performances last night.
Randy again thought it an "Interesting song choice" but called it "Another hot one. In the zone vocally; You can sing the phonebook!"
Paula seemed quite happy with David final performance, saying "I expect nothing more. Very lovely; a lovely performance."
Simon thought David "Sang it very well." He then went on to criticize the song lyrics-how could David help that? He didn't even pick the song-which is a lovely song, by the way. A loud Boo for Simon(maybe the only one he's gotten from me ever)! He did admit that David had "Done enough to get into the finals next week." I'm not so sure that he did do enough, but I think he will be there.

Syesha Mercado. The producers chose “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell. Wow. Another not very good song choice for Syesha. She was just plagued with them last night, poor girl.
I thought it was fun; She had nice vocals. It would be hard for me to get all the lyrics into the up-tempo pace of the song, but she did a great job. I also really liked the ending. She did a great job on a song that didn't allow her to show her full potential.
Randy thought it was "Just OK. Just alright for me. But I can see you doing a song like that."
Paula said she "Did the song very well. It wasn't the type to define you as an artist either. I'm not sure it was enough to put you in the finale."
Simon told her it was "Better than the second song for sure. Little forgettable; didn't give you the defining moment I would have liked at this point in the show. To be honest with you, your best moment came last week with the Sam Cook song."

David Cook. The producers chose “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith. Another great choice by the producers!
David did an amazing job with this; it was awesome! My favorite from him last night; and definitely my overall favorite of the night!
Randy "Loved the song; But it was OK. Very predictable." Yes, I agree, it was rather predictable, but it was still good. The same as Archie's "Longer".
Paula declared this one did have a "Beginning, middle, and an end. See ya' in the finals!"
Simon thought it "One of the greatest songs of all time. I have to tell you, David Cook...you win the night."

So...only six more minutes by my clock till the results show starts....we'll see how they fared soon. And I may be back on here to rant and rave, whichever way it goes. I really think these top three are extremely talented.
As always, comments welcome!

American Idol—I Dare You To Move

Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And let those who love Your salvation say continually, "Let God be magnified!" But I am poor and needy; Make haste to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay. Psalm 70:4-5

I Confess

“I watch American Idol.”

There, I said it. I bring it up because (last night) David Cooke sang the song, “I dare you to move, ” by Christian recording artists Switchfoot. His interpretation was good, but I’ll stick with the original. Oh nothing against Mr. Cooke—it’s just that I don’t think he understood the significance of the lyric he was belting-out.

Do I?

Do I understand the significance and implication of these words? Honestly, I didn’t…That is until I watched this video.

American Idle

As the church—as Christian Americans, we don’t ‘have to’ do anything. We don’t have to go to church, we don’t have to read our Bibles, we don’t have to pray, and we surely do not have to reach out and help the physically and spiritually poor. But I think it is a wonderful blessing from our Creator that we ‘get to’ do these things. Suddenly it’s not about legalism, but love.

I saw the movie, and felt its really a inspiring story to many who wanna make difference.

A Little about her:
——————–

Murray was the child of poor, drug-addicted, HIV-infected parents. She became homeless at age 15 when her mother died and her father moved to a shelter. Her life turned around when she began attending the Humanities Preparatory School in Greenwich Village. Though she started high school at a late age and remained without a stable home, she was able to graduate in two years. She was awarded a New York Times scholarship for needy students and accepted into Harvard for the fall of 2000.

Murray’s life was the subject of the 2003 made-for-TV movie Homeless to Harvard - The Liz Murray Story, which aired on Lifetime. Thora Birch played Liz. Murray had a part in the movie, playing a social worker and was also a co-executive producer.

So, uh… Let me ask you a question: You know who my favorite band of all time is, right? I me

So, uh... Let me ask you a question: You know who my favorite band of all time is, right? I mean, without question, you could answer that, couldn't you? If you've known me for any amount of time, say at least a couple weeks or so, I have talked your ear off about something music related and somehow or another, this band, especially their lead singer, has come up.

You also know who I can't stand on American Idol right? So then you'd also know that I don't really argue his minimal talent, just his attitude and 'originality', right? I think he's an arrogant nimrod and I think he's a totally flat performer when left to his own devices. He's a great one-man cover band, but after that... Eh.

So, what do you imagine might happen to me when these two things collide? On national television, for my own personal embarrassment, no less. Or so I thought. Let me clarify that I know I said I was done for the season, that I wouldn't watch anymore, but tonight my curiosity got the best of me. Having watched AI since the third season, I know that when it comes time for top three, the contestants go home for a day and upon returning to LA, they each sing three songs, one chosen by a judge, one of their choice and then one chosen by the producers of the show. I wanted to see what everyone's picks were! The first and third rounds are not relevant to this blog. The second round is, though.

David Cook chose to sing "Dare You to Move" by Switchfoot. Initially, I didn't know whether to be infuriated or not because there were so many things in play. First of all, most importantly to me, it's very difficult for me to hear anyone but Jon Foreman (JoFo) sing Switchfoot songs. I'm insanely critical of music (and everything else) as it is, but put my favorite band's songs on American Idol and we're dealing with something else totally transcendent of critical. I mean... Are you kidding me? Sir Smuggy Von Arrogance trying to constipate his way through a Switchfoot song?

Secondly, this is a work of art that means an enormous deal to me. Switchfoot's music holds a lot of weight in my life. Now I know this is based on my personal feelings, that the contestants on AI aren't supposed to cater to the emotional connections we have with certain songs, but I feel it's important to mention. I know how lame you'll think this is, but the world makes sense when I listen to Switchfoot. Dare You to Move is a brilliant piece of advice. It's perfectly constructed. It's meant to be delicate in the beginning and then built up to this amazing climax. I don't want to hear it being immediately belted out from the men's bathroom (get it? 'cause he sounds blocked up when he sings).

Third, and this is a big one: WHAT. THE. CRAP. WAS. HE. TALKING. ABOUT. Each contestant, once they've named their choice of song has to share with the audience why they picked it. David Cook rattles off some weird explanation about how "it all seemed to fit". He says it makes sense because of the lines including "welcome to the planet... everyone's here... everyone is watching you now..." Trying to relate his place on the show to those words...

The heck?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!???????? That song is about finding redemption and forgiveness, when you feel you least deserve it, when you are at your lowest. That song is about finding your second chance in life (for me, that's namely in Christ), and turning yourself around. Recognizing the negativity in your life and refusing to wait for things to happen, deciding to make change for the better: "between who you are and who you could be... between how it is and how it should be". And then not only that, but finding the courage and the strength to forgive yourself...

That song is not about a bunch of people being around and watching you and your big old head perform neat-o cover songs on a reality show, dude. Get REAL. I know you guys only have a few days to get the songs down, but could you maybe start learning the lyrical content as well?

Well, as aggrivated as I was before he even sang the song, my frustration melted away within the first ten seconds. He absolutely butchered the beginning. He took his voice entirely too low, which made the words hard to understand. Next, I know this is totally trivial, but he used this odd kind of accent in the song. Instead of saying shouting "dare you to move", he sang shouted, "dare you to mehuuwwvve". That irritated me a whole bunch. After all that nonsense, he didn't even sing the song! I mean, he sang the bulk of one chorus, but then he cut out every remaining verse, included no bridge and just ended the song. Like, he was really trying to feed us this poignant and uplifting ninety seconds and he just let it lie there. Not only that, and I can usually admit he utilizes his talent wisely in his arrangements, he copied Switchfoot verbatim and didn't really take a chance on restructuring anything to fit the important parts together and consequently, totally bombed.

I was glad to see that the judges weren't falling at his feet this time, too. You can take that as a sign that I'm not being too sensitive that he tried to measure up against my boys. I did like though, that Randy Jackson felt the need to mention that they are a great band and that they're from San Diego. That was the best part. Oh, Haughty McProudpants... How I admire your over-confidence... When it backfires!

Now that that's off my chest, I'm going to go fall asleep to some real Switchfoot.

Well folks, we're down to the final three. Tonight had better be good.

David Archuleta

Paula's Pick: "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel - I found it ironic that Paula used the word "exploit" in her reasoning for picking this song for little Archuleta. I wonder if she's trying to send a subliminal message? Tonight's the first night that he's performing without input from his stage dad (The producers banned Daddy Jeff from backstage, FYI). Seems like Paula made a good decision for little David. It was pure and beautiful.

David's Pick: "With You" by Chris Brown - Wow, this is quite a departure for him. I wonder if his father being banned had anything to do with this. If that's the case, I hope the rocks it. I do find him saying "boo" a bit awkward. He sounds like he's struggling rhythmically. And he flubbed the lyrics. This was not a good song for him. I'm glad he stepped out of his comfort zone, but little Archuleta cannot pull off hip-hop.

Producers' Pick: "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg - Seriously? I thought they wanted to prove that he could sing contemporary songs. Guess not. Once again, pure and beautiful. Other than the Chris Brown mishap, I've really liked little Archuleta tonight. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that his dad wasn't breathing down his neck. I just don't see him as a contemporary artist. Plus, everything he sings kind of sounds the same. He only has one style that he is good at.

Syesha

Randy's Pick: "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keyes - LOVE the gold dress. She is beautiful. Alicia Keyes is a tall order, but Syesha held up pretty well. Better on the chorus than on the verses. Good job overall. Glad she finally got over her nerves from the beginning of the season.

Syesha's Pick: "Fever" by Peggy Lee - She's using a chair as a prop, oh my. Welcome to the Great White Way, Syesha. This performance makes me think that Syesha has given up on being a pop star and is trying to appeal to Broadway casting directors. The judges criticized her for this song choice, but she honestly might be more interested in pursuing a Tony rather than a Grammy. There's nothing wrong with that; just ask Kristin Chenoweth.

Producers' Pick: "Hit Me Up" by Gia Farrell for Happy Feet - Why is Justin Guarini in the audience? Why did Ryan make a gay joke about Syesha's dad? Why did the producer's pick this song for her? Why did they dress her like a penguin? Are they trying to sabotage her? Eh, it wasn't that great. Syesha didn't like the song, either. I think everyone, including Syesha, knows she's probably not going to make it to the finale.

David Cook

Simon's Pick: "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack - I was really excited about this song choice when Simon picked it. While this was not my favorite DC performance of the season, I could see him have a hit single with this song. DC could sing anything, even Andrew Lloyd Webber as he showed us a few weeks ago. I like the way he made it modern. A studio version of this song would be better than this live one.

David's Pick: "Dare You to Move" by Switchfoot - I think it's funny that DC is singing a song by a Christian group since people seem to be landing on my blog by using the search terms, "Is David Cook a Christian." I don't know if his song choice answers that question, but it gives people something to talk about and speculate about. He seemed a little nervous while singing this one. It was just okay for me. Apparently, DC agrees that it wasn't his best.

Producers' Pick: "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith - This song choice and DC's spot as the final performer leads me to believe that DC is the producers' pick to be your next American Idol. David doesn't seem to be his usual brilliant self tonight (maybe it's the time crunch of having to prepare 3 songs in less than a week), but he's my favorite of the three. In the producers' favor, he's definitely the most marketable.

My Prediction for the Finale

Battle of the Davids. You know you wouldn't want it any other way. Don't try to lie.

Augustana's success has been a bit of a late bloomer, as their 2005 album, "All the Stars and Boulevards," didn't garner real national attention until 2007 (hitting the Billboard Top 40 nineteen months after its initial release, propelled by the success of their single, "Boston"). Now with a brighter spotlight on the group (and new guitarist), Augustana fills their new album with a lot of heartfelt, adult alternative songs. Lead singer Dan Layus' fragile voice is what immediately stands out and takes center stage, effectively mixing the pain of an older heart with teenage angst. However, with all of the ballads, the album kind of positions the band as the cool version of Five for Fighting. Check for yourself.

Quarters for the songs: Dust; Fire; Hey Now; Meet You There; Sweet and Low.

When I hear this song, I'm flooded with some pretty powerful feelings. This song asks some real questions. Where will you turn when you hit rock bottom?... are you truly strong or are you strong in your own fleshly kind of way?... The song writer challenges you... he even DARES you to pick yourself up off of the floor & find real strength! You're here, in the world, but what's next?... what will you do with this life? Even when you're past is shameful.... salvation is here, right where you stand! Are you strong enough to rise up & be what God intended you to be?

Nós deveríamos viver para muito mais
Nós nos perdemos?
Em algum lugar vivemos por dentro

Awakening

Face down with the LA curbside ending
In the ones and zeros.
Downtown was the perfect place to hide.
The first star that I saw last night was a headlight
of a man-made sky, but
Man-made never made our dreams collide.

Here we are now with the falling sky and the rain,
We're awakening
Here we are now with the desperate youth in pain,
We're awakening
Maybe it's called ambition, but you've been talking in your sleep
About a dream, We're awakening

Last week saw me living for nothing but deadlines,
With my dead beat sky but, this town doesn't look the same tonight
These dreams started singing to me out of nowhere
And in all my life I don't know that I've ever felt so alive, alive

Here we are now with the falling sky and the rain,
We're awakening
Here we are now with the desperate youth in pain,
We're awakening
Maybe it's called ambition, but you've been talking in your sleep
About a dream, We're awakening

I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to know that my heart's still beating,
It's beating, I'm bleeding.
I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to live like I know what I'm leaving
I want to know that my heart's still beating,
Is beating, Is beating, It's beating, I'm bleeding

Here we are now with the falling sky and the rain,
We're awakening
Here we are now with the desperate youth in pain,
We're awakening
Maybe it's called ambition, but you've been talk, talking in your sleep
About a dream, We're awakening dream, We're awakening

Despertando

Colidirem

Aqui estamos nós agora com o céu caindo e a chuva
Estamos despertando
Aqui estamos nós agora co nossa juventude desesperada e dor
Estamos despertando

Estes sonhos começaram a cantar pra mim do nada
E em toda minha vida eu não sei se eu já me senti tão vivo
Vivo

Eu quero acordar chutando e gritando
Eu quero acordar chutando e gritando
Eu um coração que eu sei que está batendo
Está batendo
Estou sangrando
Eu quero acordar chutando e gritando
Eu quero viver como se soubesse o que estou deixando
Eu um coração que eu sei que está batendo
Está batendo
Estou sangrando

From Switchfoot's web site:

Greetings amigos!

When my brother and I were kids, my dad used to read us CS Lewis books before we went to sleep. So when we were asked to be involved in a movie based on his book, "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" - we were honored to be considered.

I wanted to capture the longing that is embedded in much of Lewis' writing- so I tried to think back to what these stories meant to me when I was six years old and write from that perspective. The song that came out is called "This is Home." It's been quite a journey: a San Diego song with strings cut at Abbey Road in London complete with a video shot in Hollywood.

We are so excited to not only share this song with you, but you can hear the song streaming on our website, myspace, and facebook. The song will also be featured on the soundtrack, which is being released through Hollywood Records on Tuesday May 13th in stores everywhere.

This is our first venture as an independent band- so thank you for being a part of this! And thanks again for all your continued support.

A História...

A gravadora produziu os três de seus primeiros álbuns The Legend of Chin,A new Way to be Humam e Learning to Breathe.

yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead
yesterday is a promise that you've broken
don't close your eyes, don't close your eyes
this is your life and today is all you've got now
yeah, and today is all you'll ever have
don't close your eyes
don't close your eyes
this is your life, are you who you want to be
this is your life, are you who you want to be

The above text is from Switchfoot's song "This is your life". I heard it while I was driving home from my Thursday night small group. I have heard the song several times but this time, I thought about it in a new way. Here is how I usually think about it-

Yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead

- Your past is part of who you are

Yesterday is a promise that you've broken

- in the past you've had some failures

Don't close your eyes

- Don't be discouraged

This is your life, and today is all you have now

-We are not promised tomorrow, get it done today

This is your life, are you who you want to be

- Are you reaching your fullest potential

Thursday night, I thought of it in the context of worship. I began to think about how I see people holding back in worship. I can almost see the inner struggle as I look around the room. Why is it that we can be afraid to let out our deepest adoration? I have been there myself at times. Standing in a sea of people wanting to raise my hands or jump up and down, or get down on my knees and then I feel all the eyes in the room starring at me so I hold it all in.

This is your life, are you who you want to be? - Worship is your life, are you worshiping with all of who you are? Are you pouring out all of who you are? If not, why not? God certainly deserves it. Don't look at the rest of the room. Look to the cross, look to the King. Pour out all of who you are!

Bon Jovi will apparently play a free show at Central Park on Wed. July 9. The show will be sponsored by Major League Baseball. (3 days before the All-Star game which will be hosted by the Yankees)

Donna Summer is back and her new album Crayons will be in stores on Tues. May 20. Back in March she released a single called “I’m a Fire” and it is currently #1 on billboard’s hot club dance chart. She also released another single on April 22 called “Stamp Your Feet”. Both songs are worthy of a purchase and I give both a thumbs up. She’s touring this summer all over the Tri-state area, including Atlantic City now. She will be performing at Bryant Park in NYC for the concert series for the “Today” show on Friday May 30.

Speaking of the concert series for the Today show, Mary J. Blige performs this morning at Bryant Park. The B-52’s will perform Mon. May 26.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters have released a new album called “Momofuku” and I-Tune listener’s are giving it an average rating of 4.5 stars. Listening to the 30 second samples, I have to say it didn’t sound too bad. If you like him, you’ll like the sound.

The Offspring will release their first CD in 5 years with “Rise & Fall, Rage & Grace” will hit on June 17. The first single “Hammerhead” was released this past week. Sounds pretty good. You’d be surprised by how many songs these guys have. Check out their greatest hits album. Solid effort.

Pearl Jam is starting work on their 9th studio album and it will be produced by Brendan O’Brien- first time since 1998’s “Yield” CD. That CD is really good- a must have for PJ fans.

Candlebox (remember them?- “Far Behind”) will release their first album in 10 years. “Into The Sun” will be the name and the first single is “Stand” and can be heard on their “My space” page.

Rihanna has hooked up with Maroon 5 and have re-recorded 5’s hit from their second album “If I Never See Your Face Again.” Available on I-Tunes now, I picked it up. Rihanna is already “big” and is poised to become a superstar. Maroon 5 are super solid.

My younger son told me to get with it and download “Wall to Wall” by Chris Brown and I have to admit I like it. He also turned me on to Natasha Bedingfield’s “ Pocket Full of Sunshine.” I like both of these tunes. I returned the favor by playing “God’s Got It” from the Black Crowes, off of their Warpaint CD, and he loved it and put it on his I-POD. That made my day- A 10 year old liking the Black Crowes, how psyched am I?

I’m “luke-warm” on the new single from Weezer- “Pork & Beans.” Turns out they were pissed off that their record company wanted a “hit” and they recorded this. Sounds OK.

New favorite song of the week is “Give It To Me” from Madonna off of her new CD “Hard Candy.” A definite hit-mark my words.

This past week I was listening to a heavy dose of Kiss on my I-Pod and as many of you know I am a huge Kiss fan. Now I know for many people, they really don’t take them seriously. Now for all you Kiss fans please don’t freak out from what I’m about to say: My favorite album from them is “MTV Unplugged.” Now don’t get me wrong I’m ‘rightthere’ with their debut album, ‘Hotter Than Hell’ and ‘Dressed to kill.’ I love all of those albums from top to bottom. Also love ‘Rock N Roll Over’ and ‘Love Gun.’ But hear me out. MTV Unplugged showcases their musical talents (which most don’t give them credit for) and it will also pull in the people who say they are not fans of Kiss.

For the people who say they don’t like Kiss, please- just listen to this CD once (put it out of your head that it is Kiss- and listen) and I’ll bet you’ll play it for your friends. That’s what happened with me, I played it for my brother but did not tell him who it was and I believe it is now one of his favorites as well. This CD hits all the “Kiss-story” from their beginning to another one of my favorites- “Revenge” (which came out in 1992). Back on Aug. 9, 1995 Kiss performed at the MTV studios for this un-plugged session and the buzz back then was that the original band was getting back together for a reunion tour (which is still going on). This was the only time that Peter Criss and Ace Frehley-original drummer and lead guitarist- shared the same stage with Bruce Kulick (lead guitarist in 1995) and Eric Singer (drummer in 1995-who is now back with the band after Criss & Frehley were kicked out). The show starts off with “Coming Home” from Hotter than Hell (their 2nd album) a song written by Paul Stanley & Ace. From the “opening bell” you can tell that they were on their game. Singer’s drumming is tight and Kulick’s guitar strumming is on target and you’ll be bopping and weaving your head to this one. Tune #2 is from Love Gun and “Plaster Caster” rocks the house with an upbeat tempo that will have you turning up the volume. It slows down a bit with another one from Hotter than Hell with “Going Blind” and I have to say Gene’s vocals are spot on; it’s a sing-a-long song. Then it kicks up with Stanley’s “Do You Love Me?” from ‘Destroyer.’ I know the lyrics are kind of silly but the song rocks and the volume will be up again on this one. Track # 5 “Domino” is a cool cut from ‘Revenge’ and Gene’s lyrics deal with his favorite topic- women. (Again I like the music). Kulick’s guitar solo is phenomenal.“Sure Know Something” from “Dynasty” will surprise you and you will not believe this is a song that Kiss would do. This is one of the songs that will pull you in. Track # 7 –“A World without Heroes” is an obscure song from one of their most unknown albums “The Elder” but again Gene’s vocals are spot on for the softer side of Kiss. The beginning of “Rock Bottom” stays soft in the beginning and then as Paul states “now it gets rough” and it kicks in and the volume has to be at full force as they blast their way through this “Dressed to Kill” classic.Track # 9 is another sing-a-long song with “See You Tonight” which is the “new” song performed that night.

Track # 10 “I Still Love You” from Creatures of the Night is the gem from this CD and Stanley’s passion pours through this song, the guitar and his voice on this song will mesmerize you. Then it’s on to my favorite track of the disc and that is “Every Time I look at you”- I know a sappy commercial love song but I love it. This is another song that you probably would not believe it is Kiss, if you didn’t know it. The last 4 songs is where they bring out Peter Criss and Ace Frehley and they jam to the cover of the Rolling Stone’s “2000 Man” off of “Dynasty”. A side note on this one is that when Ace came out, supposedly they had to do this song over and over and Stanley was pissed because Ace couldn’t get it right. And if you listen closely you can hear a little screw-up in the song- but you have to listen closely!!“Beth” – the classic from Peter Criss sounds like the original from “Destroyer.” Another side note- I saw Kiss for their 1996 reunion tour and Criss was suppose to do this song for the encore but the music started too early for him so he refused to sing the song. Weird just the music with no vocals- but they’re all here on this one.“Nothing to Lose” from their first one has everyone chipping in on vocals and with both drummers and two guitarists- this is the best version of this song period!! You have to like this song. The disc ends with the incomparable “Rock and Roll All Nite” and no matter how many times you hear this song- it never grows old- especially this version. This song is a “blast out- back yard” party song for this summer and any other summer. There’s no denying their space in music history. It may be a small part for many… but a huge part for the Kiss Army- a dedicated army to say the least. \m/ \m/

Coldplay will tour this summer into the fall and will stop at the I-ZOD center on Sun. Rocktober 29. Ticket info to follow.

In all honesty I pity P. Z. Myers. Even more so after this post, which nearly verges on quote mining. But quote mining music? That's a new one, for sure.

So desperate to dis' Christians is Myers, that he procures this rueful "audio torture" as an abstraction of the entire genre of Christian rock. Needless to say his sampling is trash, the dregs, as it were, of inarticulate, discordant nonsense. If you really want to know what Christians listen to, take it from a Christian, not a hostile "godless liberal" prepossessed to pound Christians at every opportunity.

Alright, you asked for it. Here's a sampling of my favorites (via youtube): Toby Mac, Switchfoot, Casting Crowns, Third Day, Third Day again, Jeremy Camp and the like. You may or may not like these, to bad. Everyone is suited to their own tastes, right? So how can any one kind of music possibly be a type of a vast and diverse body? I mean, some people listen to classical music or oldies [gasps]...

Switchfoot... mmm Switchfoot, they are a Pop-Rock/Alternative Band... This song came out with their album "The Beautiful Letdown" in 2003 (sometimes I wonder where they always got those interesting titles). Actually they don't really like people calling them a Christian band so I assume that they are not but they are some kind of faith Band or the people band because their songs, like this one include the everyday life.

About the Song:

I've listened to this song when I was yeah exactly wondering about nothing and then this question just popped. My sister turned it on and I asked myself the question... This song is good for everyday life, just to follow the goal we set for ourselves, it might even be a wake up call for some...
