With the city's other "paranormals" more active than ever, and the treaty between humans, vampires and werewolves all but dissolved, she and the rest of the CCPD had enough to handle.

But now her daughter has been kidnapped and she's learned that demons still exist - and that they are plotting. She herself is caught in the dark ritual and must go to the creatures shadowy world. To whom can she turn for help? The vampire, Tiberu Korzha, whose eyes promise death but whose lips taste of eternity: does she dare trust him? Or does salvation lie with the powerful Lath, he who inspires lust beyond name? Thirst, bitterness, despair - on the plane of Orcus, all these things await. But just as surely, beyond that portal are Claudia's daughter, vitory and true love. And her first taste of...

16-Jul-08 to 18-Jul-08

Review: A little disturbing for me.

There are some good points in the book, but there are bad points as well.

I liked Tiber, however I think we could have used more background on him. You don't get his whole story, so you don't really understand why he does what he does. However, a strong vamp, he does what is necessary - for Claudia, Holly and himself. What he had to do in a part of this novel was really sad - a parent shouldn't have to do what he had to do. I really felt for him.

As for Claudia, her hatred for vampires wasn't clarified so you didn't understand her feelings, especially the distrust. It kept coming back to what she learned in the academy. While you do get some background on her, you don't get a whole lot, nor do you get a straight, full story on how she fell for a demon, not knowing what he was and had a baby. The idea of her being only 15 at the time had me rather frightened: my daughter is seven and I can't imagine what life would be like at the age of 15 and finding out you're pregnant, regardless of the life you've had. Couldn't have been easy. But there isn't enough for the ready to fully comprehend what's going on in that department. I do, however, have to give Claudia kudos; she raised her daughter alone, and fought with everything she has inside to give her daughter a better life.

The plot was good, could have used a little more work. There is a couple of parts in the story that I'm really not happy with - rape is rape, no matter how or who, and I don't like reading the by-play of the entire scene. Saying the victim was raped is one thing, but to be there with Claudia while it's happening? While she's screaming no but her body says yes? Vishtau or not, I didn't like it, and I hope to never read something like that again. I'd have liked to take a knife to Lath myself, no doubt about that.

And it's because of those exact scenes that I can't give the novel a better rating than 3 stars. Sorry, Ms. Jewel! A little too 'dark' for my taste.

Los Angeles. Once, it was the City of Angels. Now, it's Crimson City, whose inhabitants know nothing of Heaven. The tentative peace between the species - werewolf, vampire, human - teeters on the brink of collapse. Sides are being chosen. Yet the peril is greater than any imagine. There is a power here that longs for release, an ancient darkness held captive too long. Below, beneath, beyond, it seethes. And there are those who would see it freed.

Mika herself seeks freedom. She's come to Crimson City looking for the key. But that key's keeper is a killer, an outsider, a mercenary with a poisoned past. To her kind, he has meant only death. No matter that Conor McCabe's pale green eyes hold a hint of lust, the glind of a bond never to be broken; the path ahead lies in shadow. In a city like this, death can come by fire or fang, by claw or kiss. And the moment of truth must come...

Review: Pretty good for what it was.

Could have been a little better though, I think. Comparing this one to the first two, it fell a little flat somehow. The author didn't combine enough background info - it almost feels like something's missing. You don't really get the why of it all.

There's no misunderstanding as to why Conor is the way he is. It's crystal clear. I liked his character; strong, it takes quite a bit to succumb to his desires. I truly hope to see more of him.

Mika... sure, demons are made out to be just as sensual creatures as vamps are, and they are very open about it, but on her, it almost seemed immature somehow. That's how it came across and I'm still not sure why.

The fight scenes are pretty good, the descriptions make you feel like you're there - you see a clear picture of everything in your head while reading.

I say, read it - I think you'll like it.

Session 9 is one of those movies people rent because it’s Saturday night, they’re bored

Session 9 is one of those movies people rent because it's Saturday night, they're bored, and it has a cool box cover. They're looking for a way to pass the time, and the fully expect to forget the film once its over. But Session 9 won't let that happen, and the viewer is thus privy to one of the most genuinely frightening and original horror films to appear in the last decade.

The story is as follows: a group of five Hazmat workers are given one week to remove the asbestos from the crumbling Danvers State Mental Institution. With the deadline looming, the relationship between the men starts to strain, leading to distrust and an overall sense of dread, brought on by the building and its sinister presence. Note: Most of that was paraphrased from the Wikipedia entry. I don't think I'm a bad writer, but I can write a film synopsis to save my life)

Many say the star of the film is the building, Danvers State Hospital, and although a major factor, I'd like to give the nod to the delightfully horrifying voice of Simon. Making an appearance early on in the film, his (its?) eerie growl sets the mood for the entire film. His role as the motivator and instigator behind the events on the session tapes parallels the events of the films, though this is revealed toward the ending, with Anderson relying on the characters and their tumultuous pasts and current woes to act as the primary tension builder. This in itself makes Session 9 a rare treat among modern American horror films, which tend to dispense of character development in favor of violence, though I can only assume this is so we don't get too attached to them, as they all usually get dispatched in gruesome ways.

One often overlooked aspect of this film, and indeed in most horror films, is the soundtrack. Anderson took a different route than most American horror films, utilizing nothing more than a piano to help convey the dread the characters have no idea is upon them. Single notes, building up into a crescendo and repeating endlessly allows the tension to build upon itself, specifically during the final twenty minutes of the film. This lack of a typical horror movie score prevents the viewer from predicting what will happen next, adding to the originality of the film and enhancing the dread it conveys. We're spared the music that warns us of impending doom, forcing the audience to sit on the edge of their seats and await the scare that might never come.

Session 9 doesn't rely on cheap scares to frighten the viewer, and for that it deserves the highest accolades. Though this review is slightly biased - Session 9 has been my favorite movie for years now - I'd be remiss if I didn't mention some of its faults. While the acting is solid, David Caruso has a tendency to overact, providing way too much emotion in a scene that, although emotional for the characters, makes me wonder if he's going to start crying. His growing virulence toward his co-workers as the film progresses culminates with the following scene:

This is only slightly less cheesy than when he says "You shuck fiber in there with us!" Despite all this, David Caruso does a pretty decent job of being a complete dickhead, and the remaining actors give solid performances. Another complaint given about the film, and one I only half agree with, is the use of a red herring, though its use is incredibly subtle and thus I feel not a hindrance to the overall effectiveness of the film.

In short, Session 9 is a taut psychological thriller that relies on more than cheap scares to frighten the viewer. The many elements that go into making a genuinely scary horror movie all fall into place, resulting in a wholly original horror film that suffers from a severe lack of the recognition it truly deserves.

I have not seen the first three films by Alexandre Aja, though I suspect most have not. His magnum o

I have not seen the first three films by Alexandre Aja, though I suspect most have not. His magnum opus might be considered Haute Tension had the script not degraded into a cheap M. Night Shayamalan rip-off, rendering the first half of the movie completely implausible and utterly stupid. Though this made the film absolutely unbearable, it was not without its upsides. The soundtrack, cinematography, and methods of dispatch, if you will, were absolutely brilliant, so I don't think I'd be completely off base in saying that this was just a fluke and hoped for good things to come from him in the future.

His next film was a remake of the Craven borefest The Hills Have Eyes, which was overtly graphic for the sake of being graphic while being just as boring as the original. This says nothing of its originality, of which there is almost none, falling into an inescapable vortex of cheap horror cliches. The final twenty minutes are ridiculously predictable, and I left the theater wondering what the fuck I just watched.

His next film as a writer was P2, which I never saw. This is a good thing, as it doesn't seem to be anything more than your run-of-the-mill Hollywood suspense-thriller. After that comes this year's South Korean remake, Mirrors, doomed to fail because it's a remake of an Asian horror film. Just because The Ring was successful does not give every fucking big-name horror director carte blanche to adapt every Asian horror film into a shitty one-off American adaptation. The Grudge sucked, Dark Water sucked, and Pulse definitely sucked, so what makes you think this won't suck? 'Cause Jack Bauer is in it?

Alexandre Aja is lucky in that he made one successful horror film (albeit a shitty successful horror film). Instead, however, of making more successful horror films that are actually good, he's selling out by making cheap remakes of classics that also suck, remakes of Asian horror films that are rarely good, and really, really, really, really, really, really shitty retarded suspense-thrillers. His next movie is Piranha 3-D. Here's hoping it's a comedy.

Mr. Aja, please stop making shitty horror films. The French are dominating the genre, and you're sticking out like a black man at a Klan rally. Have some God damned dignity and make something truly inspiring to horror fans everywhere. You've exhibited a slow and steady decline, so...well, so I guess you're like most horror directors. Heh. No one can ever top their first.

Fun note: Aja holds membership in the Splat Pack, "a collection of filmmakers who, since 2002, have brought about a renaissance of horror film." Of those on the list, the only who is worth a damn is Neil Marshall, 'cause, well, Dog Soldiers and The Descent fucking ruled.

Review: Pretty good but not as good as Crimson City.

I thought the author wrote it well. I truly felt Keeli's emotions and debates and understood where she was coming from and why she didn't want to do what she had to do and why she did what she did. A strong woman, she rides on her instincts, even when she doesn't want to. The war within herself is huge, and with Michael's help, she gets through it.

I though Michael could have used a little more work. As the Vendix, I got where he came from, the how and why of it all, but I found the constant use of his thoughts a little on the sissy side for a guy who's supposed to be a 'tough guy'. Strong, he too rides his instincts and does what he needs to in the heat of any moment.

I do have to say I found the author's descriptions top notch. I truly felt like the walls were crowding me at times, being underground with so many others. I really hope that, sometime in the series, one of the authors will touch base as to how the world came to be as it is. Mind you, there is always distrust between vamps, weres and humans, regardless of the story, but I'd really like to know how the city came to be as it is in the story. As it is, this novel is a great addition to the sci-fi, urban paranormal fantasy genres and should be read.

Y'know, people think that movies today are so brutal and shocking, but you know what? It's been that way for a while. Look at the 70s. You had movies like Apocalypse Now, The Godfather and Taxi Driver that pushed the buttons of sensitive viewers. I mean what's more objectionable? The Matrix's lobby scene or waking up with a severed horse head?

My dad and I were trying to find something to watch on a Sunday night and we were rooting through his DVD collection only to happen upon Straw Dogs. Neither of us had ever seen it, and I'd never seen a Peckinpah movie before. So we just shrugged our shoulders, popped in the DVD and sat down to watch it, completely innocent of what the movie was about.

Ohhhhhhhhhh dear.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="497" caption="Be vewy, vewy quiet..."][/caption]

So Straw Dogs is about Dustin Hoffman moving to the English countryside with his gum-smacking trophy wife. Right off the bat, we get the feeling that there's some dischord going on. A few minutes into the movie we get a faceful of Dustin's wife's righteous rack encased in a white sweater... with no bra. It's impossible not to notice and it seems the men helping the couple move things to their house is taking notice, too. Dustin leaves her to get something at the local pub and a completely pointless argument breaks out where a big, drunken patron breaks a bunch of glasses. Meanwhile one of the men he's hired to help him build a garage for their country house is making moves on Sweater McNipplehard and she's not enjoying the attention. The unease keeps ramping up throughout the film. Dustin is some sort of ridiculous astromathematician (?!) and his young, hot wife is upset he doesn't have more time for her. The workers at their house get more and more bold with their leering and bullying, with the couple starting to receive some disturbing "messages" aimed at them. Dustin, the wimpiest man on earth, says he intends to deal with these huge, swarthy hooligans but chickens out at the last second. His cowardice leads to a shocking act of violence that will bring his soft-spoken demeanor to the breaking point.

If it seems like a slow film from that description, half of it is because I wanted to withhold some of the more surprising twists from the narrative so that I don't completely ruin the experience. The other half is that it is a pretty slow film, for what it is. It's only two hours long, but it feels like this movie could've gotten the same point across in 100 minutes rather than 120. And it doesn't help that hardly anything besides escalating tension happens for the first 90 minutes. The same points keep getting drilled into us without much variation. Dustin is a total geeky, meek loser. His wife is smoking hot (in that 70s, English way) and is totally flaunting her assets around everyone. The guys working on their garage are stupid brutes who wanna fuck the living shit out of Sweater McNipplehard. There is CONFLICT because of this. Etc. etc. I'm usually not one to say that LESS development is called for in a film, but when it makes me nearly want to bail on a film after the first half, perhaps it's a might repetitive and slow.

The upside to this is that the sleepy English countryside is richly illustrated through all of the slow scenes of dialogue and simmering lust and loathing. And all of the character development really puts you into the head of Dustin, which is important for what comes later. I really began to identify with him somewhere in the film, which is surprising because he really does play a completely wimpy nerd. And when things do pick up, boy, do they pick up. The last half an hour of the movie is... god, I hesitate to use the term "edge of your seat," but really, it is. I was rapt in attention to the screen. It's suspense that holds up even today.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="497" caption="Coincidentally, this is a sweater that holds up to this day."][/caption]

And really, I can see how this movie could almost be viewed as a predecessor of sorts to modern films like Panic Room, or Funny Games. (Shut up, I liked them both!) Well, really, this movie could be viewed as the anti-Funny Games. The transformation that Dustin goes through when he's pushed too far feels both natural and completely unbelievable. We know him as the quiet, soft-spoken pacifist and something in him just snaps and he turns into a violent, possessive, righteous Republican conservative Bush-voting beast. He drags his wife around by the hair and tells her if she doesn't behave, he'll break her neck. (No, he literally says this; it's both disturbing and awesome.) He actually gains MORE control when put into a perilous situation and the movie (arguably) glorifies violence. Funny Games, on the other hand, is all about the helplessness and victimization of the family who gets terrorized. These poor people have absolutely no control over their situation, cruelty being inflicted upon them at the random whim of another. There's even opposites at work in the villains. In Straw Dogs, the aggressors are loutish, barely-literate thugs. The villains of Funny Games are well-mannered, literate young men who look ready to play a round of golf. And Funny Games definitely isn't as violent as Straw Dogs (no violence happens on-screen) and even has a rather dark message opposing the glorification that Straw Dogs lavishes on violence. Food for thought or just baseless comparison from an idiot? You decide!

Putting story and thematic issues aside, the acting is actually pretty good. There's a sort of naturalistic method to Dustin's acting. It's generally not very stagey or very affected... a nice change of pace from his recent roles where he's been prattling with ridiculous accents that get in the way of his ability to act. He's a nice fit for the character, too, since I sort of imagine Dustin in real life to be mild-mannered to a fault even though I know he's probably an awful, jaded Hollywood player. Susan George does a good job as his tit-candy wife, too. She's so childish yet she has an unexpected dignity to her demeanor. But her good acting is muddled by the fact that her character is all over the place in this movie and she has to do and say some pretty unlikable things (like most of the cast, actually) by the end of it.

Bottom line: Am I recommending this or not? Yyyyyyyyeah, sure I am. If you have an appreciation for pre-1980s film and don't mind a good, long setup, there's lots of benefits to reap from watching Straw Dogs. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go set up my bear trap.

No message back for ages (if at all)
But building up a silence so intense
That I can only break it with a call:

Then when I come you keep me waiting still
Shut in a room, or naked on my knees -
Until I'm ready to accept your will,
For nothing happens now, except you please.

And steal away my senses bit by bit:
Lost in the dark, I cannot tell what things
And that’s when I begin to spread my wings
And fly with you, instead of fighting it.

Another of the numerous Alan Class black and white reprint anthologies that appeared in the UK from the early 1960s to approx 1990 was "Amazing Stories of Suspense" (usully just shortened to "Suspense"). Containing reprints of Atlas, Marvel, ACG, Charlton and Archie superhero comics with no continuity you never knew what to expect in each issue. Some of the stories reprinted (especially in the earlier issues) have probably never ever been reprinted in the States. For instance in this issue there are stories from the early 1950s from Atlas' Strange Tales and Marvel Tales.

Issue 19 (probably published around 1965) contains the classic Ditko story called "It happened on the Silent Screen" from Marvel Comics' Tales to Astonish 21 of 1961. Interestingly the whole story unfolds without a single word balloon being used. Perhaps Steve Ditko should be recognised as the one who first came up with the character called "The Hulk" many months before the "Incredible Hulk" first appeared in his 6 issue series (Marvels first ever mini-series ??) of 1962.

The back cover reminds you of the other titles avaiable. Journey into Danger only lasted a few months but most of the other titles were published for years.

I purchased Issue 93 (undated as were all of these "Class Series" comics) when it was new, probably around 1970. The main story comes from Archie/Radio comics Mighty Crusaders 5 originally published 3 or 4 years earlier. Again the back cover reminds you of the other five monthly comics Alan Class was to issue until the demise of his company. The final "Suspense" is believed to be number 241.

In the U.S., we tend to use “MYSTERY” as an umbrella term for many types of crime novel

In the U.S., we tend to use "MYSTERY" as an umbrella term for many types of crime novels. However, there are subtle differences between a mystery, thriller, and suspense novel.

A Mystery is about an event in the past, which requires the detective to solve a puzzle. This involves sifting through clues and using logical deductions to solve the crime. A true mystery is actually the story of an event told backwards. The detective's job is to start after the deed is done and figure out the who and the why in order to bring the criminal to justice. (Some of the best mystery stories are those which make available to the reader all of the information that the detective has to solve the crime. If the reader is smart enough, (s)he should be able to unravel the mystery.)

In Suspense, the essential question is not necessarily whodunit, but rather, will they catch the villain before (s)he strikes again? As readers, we constantly anticipate what will happen next. In this sub-genre, the future is more important than the past. (Suspense novels involving in-depth analysis of character are sometimes referred to as psychological suspense. Many of Alfred Hitchcock's films fall into this category.)

With a Thriller, the deed hasn’t happened yet. Mad assassins, for example, plan to kill the President, and everyone follows clues to find out who, when, and how to stop them before they succeed. Thrillers are fast-moving and propelled by action. The main focus of a thriller is on the increasing peril the characters are in and what they have to do to stay alive.

In a mystery, thinking is paramount. Mysteries appeal primarily to the mind and emphasize the logical solution to a puzzle. In contrast, thrillers strive for heightened emotions and excite the reader. Readers of mysteries look for clues, while readers of suspense and thrillers expect surprises. The ideal reader of mysteries remains one step behind the hero or heroine. Those who read suspense should be one step ahead of the protagonist, knowing things (s)he doesn’t know. Mystery endings must be intellectually satisfying; Suspense and thriller endings must provide emotional satisfaction.

So what’s the difference between a thriller and a suspense novel? A thriller is all action and has a faster pace; suspense is all about tension and has a slower pace.

To highlight these differences, authors sometimes belong to two different organizations. Before 2004, most crime writers were members of the Mystery Writers of America. Now thriller authors have their own association: International Thriller Writers (consisting of mostly American writers). Until ITW, thriller authors had never organized. While the MWA bestows Edgar awards for the best "crime novels," the ITW has their own set of awards for just thrillers.

If bookstores or libraries want to organize mysteries, suspense novels, and thrillers into one category, it should be called "Crime Fiction," not simply "Mystery".

Sometimes a movie challenges its viewers via plots, complext characters, and moral-bending issues. I

Sometimes a movie challenges its viewers via plots, complext characters, and moral-bending issues. In some respects Phone Booth does some of this, but its method of doing so is interesting. Whereas many films function on showing sprawling environments, and a variety of locations Phone Booth forces the viewer into a confined space. Our entire world is shrunk down to that of a phone booth, where unlucky Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell) is trapped. Upon answering the randomly ringing phone he's locked into a sniper's game. This "game" hinges on Stu admitting his flaws to himself, and that he's cheating on his wife. Essentially Stu is a man we're meant to initially hate, but underneath he's human - and we each have flaws. With each passing moment the situation esculates into a bigger and bigger scene - until Stu is surrounded by police, media and other onlookers.

Thus Phone Booth is also a social commentary, especially on how the news media will jump onto any story. Here they are willing to literally watch Stu die, and no one gives it a second thought. Its easy to distance one self from pictures on the news simply because they aren't happening to us. What Phone Booth attempts to say is that no matter how distant that event is, we're still watching human life portrayed on-screen. Stu is not only trapped by the confines of the booth itself, but by the people standing around it - if he does something wrong he'll endanger the lives of others.

When I first saw this movie it was with my Dad, and the confining, limited environment definently tried him. Its not easy to focus one self onto a single space; especially when movies usually feature multiple sets. On some level the movie is more like a theater production, and harkens back to the days where movies did have limited sets. I think of Arsenic and Old Lace - where much of the film occurs in a living room. Futhermore several devious if not nefarious plot-elements occur within the basement - which is never seen throughout the film. Phone Booth doesn't do exactly that, but it forces our world to become just like Stu's - confining, uncomfortable and exposed. It might be a struggle to initially watch, but its well worth sitting through. Besides, there's a lot to be said in its minimalism.

Quite a few people have been asking me what Hot Jewlz means, and why it was chosen as the name for our label home. Well, Hot Jewlz is defined as the combination of:

HOT - "Hot music, designed to move and inspire"
JEWLZ - "Jewels of information that proves that beauty and strength can emerge from immense pressure."

Basically, I wanted my music to reflect the struggles that we all face, and to champion the idea that we can overcome adversity through music. For me, battling what I've faced, I've found music as therapy has been very helpful. Hopefully you will also be able to overcome obstacles that stand in your way of greatness.

Thank you for your continued support,

Direção: Franck Khalfoun

Roteiro: Franck Khalfoun, Alexandre Aja, Grégory Levasseur

Elenco: Rachel Nichols, Wes Bentley, Simon Reynolds, Philip Akin
