Sen ifall man kommenterar spelen.
...The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past även ett action spel man aldrig kan tröttna på.

Come one come all, so long as you are cynical, jaded, clad in plaid & skinny jeans, ride a vintage bicycle and have an addiction to five-shot, organic, Fair-Trade lattes.

Sorry, did I just pigeonhole you? Mission accomplished.

This blog is for all of you hipsters out there. All of you in blogosphere who feel a void when it comes to communication with Your People. The ones who scour thrift stores and estate sales for the perfect outfits. You guys who sport ironic facial hair and the ladies who Stitch-N-Bitch. To you Pabst Blue Ribbon sipping, environmental activist vegans and those who love them. For the socialists, the artists, schmoozers and losers. This is for you.

The whole idea stemmed from the cover article in the last issue of AdBusters Magazine called Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization by Douglas Haddow. This article riled me more than it should have. I'm not entirely sure why, but it definitely has something to do with the fact that it was in AdBusters. But that's another story altogether.

Anyways, I was upset for a while. I wrote to AdBusters advocating the need for anti-consumerism, and the fact that genuine hipsters only want to look as good as the guy standing next to them at the Broken Social Scene concert. I had a bevy of arguments all laid-out. I sent the e-mail and I felt a little better.

But then I realized that all of those people on the message boards were just like me. That they were upset with those Gen Xers, and even Gen Yers who don't get us. They don't understand that were aren't brash and crass like the Hippies or Punks. We are unhappy, but that doesn't mean that we have to behave like our parents did. Look what our parents did! We're going to have to live and raise the future generations in this chemical soup that is our planet.

We aren't out there to flaunt our ideals, but we're not apathetic. We're nerds. Deep down beneath our American Apparel, our love of Super NES and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles isn't ironic at all.

We Hipsters need to band together. To stand strong in this time of oppression! Let them hear us from Brooklyn to Austin! Montreal to Portland!

I am Hipster, hear me roar!

#1- Digital Pinball: Necronomicon

When I started this feature, over ten long months ago, my first order of business was to decide the rank each game would occupy on the list. This wasn't an easy task, and the games did a fair bit of shuffling around until I was entirely satisfied. The only part that was easy was my decision to place Necronomicon in the top spot. In fact, this game was one of the primary reasons for me wanting to make such a list in the first place. Digital Pinball: Necronomicon isn't necessarily an unknown game (Sega Saturn cultists have been singing it's praises for years) but it's been stealthily evading the radar of John Q. Gamer for far too long.

So first, the bad news; this game never made it outside Japan, and, as you may have caught a moment ago, it's only available for the oft-maligned Saturn.

Yeah, yeah, I know. The typical cop-out conclusion to a top ten list, right? There’s always gotta be some arrogant douchbag (such as myself) who waits until the very end to tell you that you don’t know shit about shit until you’ve played Zigotuma QX Special Edition ’87 for the Amstrad PCW. And of course there were only three hundred copies made and it was only released in Kyrgyzstan etc etc etc. The conclusion is always that you should kill yourself because you’ll never get to play such an amazing game, and also that the list-maker is totally radical for his esoteric knowledge of videogames.

Thankfully, things aren't quite so grim with Necronomicon. If you can get past the hurdle of digging out your Saturn (which is already import-friendly, right?), the rest of the equation isn't so bad. The game, while not particularly common, isn't prohibitively expensive either. Copies routinely change hands on ebay in the $20-35 range, though I've seen some go for as low as seven bucks. Also, the text and audio is mostly in English, and, to the best of my knowledge, everyone in the world speaks English. So once you've got the game booted up, the hard part is over, and it's clear skies and smooth sailing from then on.

And when I say "clear" and "smooth," I mean exactly that. Despite the fact that the game was released in 1996, long before HDTVs became prevalent, the graphics are displayed in interlaced high resolution; quite a progressive move on the part of developer Kaze. Because of this, and the fact that the tables themselves are static images rather than 3D models, the game looks fabulous. The hardware might be a tad antiquated, but the game looks clean, crisp and current. The only thing that looks somewhat outdated are the FMV movies, which use grainy video compression techniques that were standard at the time. No biggie, that.

The second half of this audiovisual extravaganza is the sound. In this area too, Necronomicon sets itself apart. Sound effects are functional and unobtrusive, even understated. But because of the rest of the sound design is decidedly not understated, you probably won't even notice them unless you deliberately try to.

Musically, prog rock is the order of the day; dark, theatrical and more often then not, pretty damn rockin'. Even for those (like myself) who are rather lukewarm on the genre, I can't foresee many people not enjoying the soundtrack (which includes two short songs from John Petrucci, of Dream Theater fame). For those who really dig the tunes, you can slip the game disc in your CD player and play (or rip) the soundtrack (just be sure not to play track one, which contains the game data).

There's one rather bizarre aspect to the audio presentation that might turn some people off. During gameplay, a voice-over spouts a near-constant stream of Lovecraft-inspired nonsense. And while fans of H.P. Lovecraft's work will undoubtedly eat this up, I can certainly understand how this could irritate the shit out of some folks, especially since there is no option for muting such obscure soliloquizing as:

"He carries the message of the Ancient Ones. He is the first and the last. His dark angels from above will come, and he'll be worshipped by us all. Through the cities and fields, his shadow we can see. He's everywhere you turn. Here he comes, marching in triumph."

Initially I was pretty bothered by this, particularly since there's a good bit of repetition involved, but I quickly learned to tune it out and concentrate on enjoying the music. In time, I began to actually enjoy these speeches. Their straight-faced campiness gives the game a sort of whimsical personality which only overt weirdness can provide. But, still, it's pretty jarring and strange at first, so I felt a fair warning was in order.

Necronomicon consists of three tables, all somewhat squat and almost shockingly simple in design (with one notable exception). This is in sharp contrast to many tables both physical and digital, which are often intricate to the point of fetish, and can have surprisingly steep learning curves. And while that intricacy has it's own charm, Necronomicon is a celebration of the speed and simplicity that lies at the core of pinball's classic appeal.

This elegance of design also informs the aesthetics of the tables. Each table has a distinct and eye-pleasing layout, and you're never left wondering what you're looking at. Everything is immediately obvious at a glance (again, with one exception), and all three offer very different challenges and visual designs. Further differentiating the tables is the fact that each has a color scheme based on a primary color, which has the effect of endowing them with a bold "classic" appearance.

Eschewing this pervasive simplicity is the third table (Dreamlands), which is much more complex and sophisticated than it's brethren. For my money, this is the single greatest virtual pinball table ever created. Being a dual-level table (with the top level being a large transparent ramp) it'll take a few minutes to figure out exactly how everything works, but once you fully understand it, it's absolutely enchanting and insanely addictive. The game would be worth the price of admission for any of the tables individually, but this one is particularly excellent. I've played it for countless hours and it simply never gets old.

As I said earlier, Necronomicon is all about speed and simplicity and, due to a brilliant interface, the learning curve is practically nonexistent. Rather than having to carefully analyze the lights on the table ("okay, was that light lit a second ago?"), all objectives are clearly indicated by an unobtrusive HUD which places arrows where you should try to shoot the ball. It's very easy to activate the various challenge modes, and each table has a large variety of these objectives, some easy, some devilishly tough. There are a variety of multiball modes, some with two balls, some with three, and some with so many damn balls that I haven't been able to count them due to the sheer chaos and panic they induce (though I'd estimate there to be about seven).

Even when there are too many balls on screen to fathom, the game always runs at a silky smooth framerate, with no noticeable stuttering or slowdown. The high speed and framerate isn't in lieu of excellent physics either. The physics feel perfect, and the level of precision and control you have over the ball (or balls) is phenomenal. During multiball, balls clack off one another realistically. The sensation of paddling balls (an area where many video pins come up short) feels tactile and satisfying. Regardless of when it was made, the game feels every bit as "next gen" as practically anything created since.

I've gushed about Neconomicon for long enough. My part is done, it's all up to you now. Dig out your big boxy Saturn, buy this game, and enjoy. Most likely, your Saturn won't be tossed back in the closet for quite some time.

Best Table: Dreamlands

Also Check Out: Digital Pinball: Last Gladiators, which is the Russell Crow-approved predecessor to Necronomicon. Unlike the latter game, Last Gladiators WAS given a stateside release, though unfortunately, most of the four tables aren't quite in the same league as those found in it's sequel. One of the tables, however, IS of the same caliber as it's Lovecraftian counterpart (the titular Gladiators). The other three tables, while still very fun, simply aren't as well-designed or balanced. Still, if you want a sampler of the fun to be had from Necro, give Gladiators a try. [Note that an enhanced version called Last Gladiators ver 9.7 was released in Japan. This is probably the version to get].

Also worth mentioning are two other games from Kaze, which I unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to play. One is Akira Psycho Ball (for the PS2, Japan Only), based on the popular anime and manga. The other is Power Rangers Zeo Full Tilt Battle Pinball (for the PSone, all regions). I only recently found out about this latter one, and naturally I immediately ordered myself a copy. I'll let you guys know if it's any good in a future update (maybe).

It should also be noted that the SNES classic Super Pinball: Behind the Mask was co-developed by Kaze (alongside Meldac). While not in on the same level with Kaze's later output, this is easily the best pinball game for the SNES (sorry Pinball Dreams/Fantasies). Even at this early stage, some of Kaze's design brilliance was already starting to shine.

This emulator is actually kind of a dick which definitely hurts it. However, the Amiga was a true gaming machine and it actually had a large number of exclusives or games that ran best on it. Actually, a lot of bad Super NES games from European developers were born as good games on the Amiga. Tons of games, great graphics, lots of variety, plus a Euro flair.

#9 WinApple
format emulated: Apple ][
So far, I haven't used this emulator extensively but it's worked quite well to date. The Apple ][ had a large and interesting library specializing in adventures, western RPGs, and other genres not well represented on the dedicated gaming consoles.

#8 NLMSX
formats emulated: MSX, MSX2
Another emulator that I haven't used a great deal but will in the future, for sure. MSX and this emulator were straightforward and easy to use. The style of the system's library isn't that different from a gaming console but it had a lot of exclusives.

#7 Magic Engine
formats emulated: TurboGrafx-16+add-ons, SuperGrafx
note: this Europe-based emulator actually costs money - $20 thanks to exchange rates
A straightforward emulator for a straightforward system that allows you to play the card and CD based games.

#6 MESS
formats emulated: NES, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Colecovision
MESS is an attempt at a super emulator, able to handle ALL old systems but, for the moment, it falls way short. It is able to do a pretty decent job with the systems I've listed but, save for the NES, most of these systems didn't exactly have awesome libraries. NEStopia is better at emulating the NES but MESS gets the job done and you just can't argue with this history and importance of the 2600.

#5 DOSBox (with DOSShell frontend)
format emulated: DOS
Current Windows systems are unable to run many of the old PC games from 1995 and before. DOSBox changes all that and opens up a world of THOUSANDS of games, many VERY different from what you'd find on the gaming consoles. DOSBox is complicated, though, so download the DOSShell frontend, which makes the emulator very easy to use.

#4 zSNES
format emulated: Super NES+add-ons
It emulates the SNES very well and is very easy to use.

#3 Kega Fusion
formats emulated: SG-1000, Master System, Genesis+add-ons, Game Gear
Master System + Genesis alone probably would have earned this spot but add in the gems from the 2nd rate libraries of the SG-1000, Game Gear, SEGA CD and 32X and it's even more solid.

#2 Visual Boy Advance
formats emulated: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance
Thousands of games, many of them GREAT. Now on your computer. Not as comfortable as a real GBA SP in your hand but now you can blow up the screen. And it's cheaper.

#1 MAME32
formats emulated: A LOT (most 2D arcade systems)
MAME is a very successful attempt at emulating ALL arcade games. Who knows if it will ever reach that point but as it currently stands it's able to emulate 90% (my own made up number) of 2D games from the 70s through 90s. It can handle every NeoGeo game, every game from the legendary Capcom CPS1/CPS2 board, and that's just the start. Most of the 2D arcade legends from Namco, Nintendo, SEGA, Konami, etc. etc run just fine on this system. That's a whole lot of games and a whole lot of quality. The only drawback is that arcade games aren't exactly deep and complicated but the combined quantity/quality here earns #1.

WAIT? WHAT ABOUT (insert emulator here)?
Yes, there are a lot of other emulators and systems and I'm not super experienced with some of them. There are also some that just aren't complete enough to warrant a place on this list but are still worth downloading. For instance, Project64, a Nintendo 64 emulator, runs Super Mario 64 perfectly but has a lot of hiccups on games like Perfect Dark. I don't especially like the Commodore 64 or Atari 800 computer emulators available and their libraries are also somewhat cancelled out by the inclusion of Apple ][ and DOS on the list. The Sharp X68000 and its emulator are very strong but it's near-complete reliance on arcade conversions for its library means that MAME effectively cancels it out. Most emulators for 3D, optical-disc based systems are still pretty unreliable unless you love changing plug-ins and settings for every game, so no PlayStation or Saturn on this list. And systems like PS2, DS, Xbox, etc.? Go BUY THEM AT THE STORE.

He aquí algunos ejemplos:

Consola NES = $20.00

Control NES = $10.00

Adaptador AC para NES = $20.00

Atari 2600 c/6 juegos + paddles originales = $50.00

Cartucho Pac-Man para Atari 2600 = $5.00

Cartucho Frogger para Atari 2600 = $5.00

Adaptador AC para Atari = $13.00

Cartucho para NES (varios títulos -3 en total) = $30.00

Barato, ¿no?

- Uy, no me alcanza.

See ya!!

Format: Super NES Genre: Fighting Released: 1992 Developer: Capcom
An obvious choice for this list

Format: Super NES Genre: Fighting Released: 1992 Developer: Capcom

An obvious choice for this list maybe, but Street Fighter II had an undeniable impact when it was released, both on the games industry as a whole and on an impressionable young lad named Lewis, who'd just received a brand new Super NES for Christmas.

I remember that Christmas really well - I'd asked for a SNES for Christmas, but it was by far the most expensive Christmas present I'd ever received (it cost a whopping £150). Because of this, I wasn't expecting to receive any games with it (except for Super Mario World of course, which came in the box), so imagine my surprise and delight when I found a brand new copy of the console game of the moment - Street Fighter II - nestling under the Christmas tree alongside a SNES-shaped box. My grin stretched until Easter.

I remember excitedly setting up my brand new console, only momentarily delayed by the search for a plug. It's bizarre to think now that console manufacturers used to ship consoles without plugs - how tight is that? I remember when my sister got her NES - my parents didn't realise that it didn't come with a plug, so my dad ended up taking the plug off the food mixer instead. The congealed blob of cake mix on top of the plug casing stood as a testament to this fact, along with the dangerously exposed wiring.

Anyway, one of the reasons I was so impressed upon receiving SFII on that morning was that the game was so outrageously expensive - it cost £65 when it was released. Yes, that's right, SIXTY-FIVE POUNDS!!!!!! Unbelievable. The manufacturers blamed the expense on a specially manufactured 16 megabit cart, but I'm sure that can't be the whole story. £65 was, and still is, an exceptionally large amount of money to part with for a game, and it's got me thinking about how the cost of gaming has gone down in general.

Back at the dawn of gaming, games were pretty cheap - cassette tapes were only a few pounds each - but as the consoles took over from the home computers, prices skyrocketed. Most NES games cost between £40 and £45, but some cost even more - Star Wars, for example, cost £50 and Maniac Mansion came in at a massive £55. The trend continued on the Super NES, with most games being released at around £45.

Of course, most games nowadays are still released at between £40 and £50, but a savvy consumer certainly wouldn't pay that - you can buy most new games with around a £10 discount online, an option that wasn't available back in 1992. Plus when you take inflation into account, the real price of games has actually fallen. Most importantly, there's now a huge secondhand market for games that simply didn't exist in the early nineties - Nintendo for one was vehemently opposed to the idea of its games being sold secondhand, and it was some time before the secondhand gaming market really took off. Taking all this into account, you can understand my joy at receiving SFII on that magical Christmas morning - at £65, it would have taken me literally months to save up for it.

It's interesting that, while games have come down in price, consoles seem to have gotten more and more expensive. £150 for a SNES was expensive at the time, but it was nothing compared to paying £300 for the Playstation or, more recently, £425 for a PS3. I guess that you can't really compare a PS3 to a SNES though: consoles are inherently more complicated these days, more like integrated entertainment systems or mid-range PCs than games machines.

I realise I haven't really said much about SFII in this post, but there's little I can add to the countless columns of text that have been filled by this game already. All I will say is that it was, and still is, one of the best two player games ever made, and it's a tribute to its brilliance that the design of 2D fighting games has changed little since its release.

Having said that, there's nothing quite as frustrating as practising for hours, diligently learning all the special moves for all the characters, then being beaten by your little sister when she just mashes all the buttons together at once. Especially if she's playing as Zangief.

Lewis

Nova seção aqui no FS!

Now that I've finished my in-depth look at Nintendo's past consoles and my shallow evaluation of the competitors, I would like to close the book on this chapter with a quick list of favorites from each of the last four generations, regardless of system. There are no rules for these lists. These lists don't care how epic a game is or how technically adept a game is. This list just evaluates fun. And as for variety?

9. Resident Evil 2 (PlayStation)
10. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (PlayStation)

TEN FAVES from the Dreamcast/PlayStation 2/Xbox/GameCube generation

1. Pikmin 2 (GameCube)
2. Resident Evil 4 (GameCube/PS2)

In my generation it was hours and hours of sitting on the floor in front of the tv with a pale grey

In my generation it was hours and hours of sitting on the floor in front of the tv with a pale grey controller in your hand. Looking way back I remember when Atari was pushed to the back of the closet because we received the new shiny Nes for Christmas, fought over that duck hunt gun which made a very good weapon causing many scrapes and bruises with my brother. Games were just so cheap back then, you could run to the back of Toys R Us a few times a month with all your allowance/bribery.

So here are my top three, the best games of my youth (I know this will vary for most of you seeing I am either really young or really old), Pre 90’s NES and Super NES, we had the glove, we had the running pad (which like only worked for 1 game I think) and will always remain the best era in gaming history.

1. Metroid or well Super Metroid: Best game ever with an interesting terrain and storyline, spent hours upon hours gliding about with that little shooting character. Bit weird and bizarre but I liked it, definitely one of the best storylines in a game at the time. When Eve Online discussed its “walking in stations” idea I fantasized a thought of Metroid, in the sense that the Concord (npc) hired its own sort of “Space hunters”, killing pirates and entering undiscovered hostile planets with big three brained jellyfishes or whatever those things were. One day, One day… Metroid the MMO would be very awesome or another train

2. Gauntlet: Some kids liked Zelda with is mythical world, I just wanted ghosts, ghouls and half naked warriors with huge axes. Will always be one of the top games in my mind because you could play so many players at once and had so many cheats. Gauntlet was the first game where I bought cheat books for because there were just so many of them. This is my kind of World of Warcraft endless amounts nothing but hacking and slashing.

3. Sim City: The amount of hours of my life that went to this game is astonishing. If Super Metroid wins on storyline than Sim City wins on strategy. However my cities always were polluted, people protested and no matter how nice of a grid I tried to make, I always had trains going no where. So maybe I wasn’t the best on strategy but the game still

Ah the memories, childhood sucked away in the living room has transformed my life into hours at work being sucked away to old console game simulators like http://www.1980-games.com/

É o seguinte: hoje é o dia do meu aniversário.

Então, hey, ho, let’s go!

.

A TV aberta é legal sim, senhor!

Menos lágrimas no mundo

Ah, sim, onde comprar as fitas originais? Mercado Livre na veia, oras! :)
