Following the news that Stephen Chow (CJ7) will star in and direct The Green Hornet, actor Michael Peña (Lions For Lambs) has revealed he's been offered a part in the film. Chow and Peña? You know what, The Green Hornet might actually be a film to look forward to.

Initially created in 1936 for a radio show, the Green Hornet is the alter-ego of rich newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who fights crime at night alongside his Chinese servant Kato. The new film, co-written by Evan Goldberg & star Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express) is set for 2010.

Fiction: The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway

"The lights went out in the Nameless Bar just after nine. I was bent over the pool table with one hand in the bald patsch behind the D, which Flynn the Barman claimed was beer, but which was the same size and shape as Mrs. Flynn the Barman's arse: nigh on a yard in the beam and formed like the cross-section of a cooking apple."

Nick Harkaway's work of speculative fiction The Gone Away World at its center is a story of one man's relationship with his own identity, but it's Harkaway's exhilarating digressions that give the reader a post-apocalyptic world with ninjas and mimes. As much of a spoofing adventure as a serious commentary, Harkaway's novel is a sensational read.

A cross between Jeff Noon and Stephen Chow, The Gone Away World is a thoughtful novel that critiques society and industry, but never stops making you laugh. Harkaway moves effortlessly between serious philosophizing on god and man to slapstick comedy. It took me awhile to get through the first few pages and accustom myself to the narrative style, but I was rewarded with a truly superb book. It's definitely one I'm foisting on all innocent customers.

Conclusion: Keeper.

P.S. As the unnamed narrator of The Gone Away World suggests, I did put my incisors against a metal doorknob to see if I could "feel vibrations" of anyone lurking (such as secret ninjas) on the other side. Mostly I was just terrified that someone would open the door and knock my teeth out. Word of Warning: Only experiment with this on doors that won't open towards your mouth.

I'm bored and have no long rants, so here are a few short ones that I've encountered this weekend.

1) Vin Diesel has just signed on to make a third XXX movie, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage. With flops like Babylon A.D. no wonder he has decided to try and re-ignite his careers with franchise movies that he help start. He has also decided to star in the fourth Fast and Furious movie with Paul Walker and Michelle Rodgriguez. On a side not, apparently there is a short movie on the second XXX movie's DVD where Xander is killed off to make room for Ice Cubes character. Vin Diesel is the worst actor I've ever seen on the big screen.

2) Any body watch the Emmy's. Yeah, neither did I and neither did a lot more people. The primetime show had the smallest audience ever. How ironic is it, that the two biggest winners of the night, Mad Men and 30 Rocks, both have lousy ratings. But it had some tough competition, they went up against Packers/Cowboys and 60 Minutes which had interviews with John McCain and Barack Obama. It also didn't help that it was hosted by five reality TV host. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, last game at Yankee Stadium.

3) Talking about Baseball. I flipped between the Cowboys/Packers game and the Yankees/Orioles game, and watched the end of the Yankee game. I got to tell you, not a big baseball fan, and even less of a Yankee fan, but it was hard to not appreciate history being made.

4) After the spanking that the Dolphins gave The Patriots. Patriot safety, Rodney Harrison, called Ricky Williams a dirty player. That's like saying the Dalai Lama is a war monger. Ok, a bit over exaggerated, but you get the point. Harrison has been named the dirtiest player by his peers in 2004 and 2006, and by NFL head coaches in 2008. I guess this is what happens when the shoe is on the other foot. And I don't want to hear anything about who else would know better than a dirty players

5) Ok the movie hasn't even come out yet, but Warner Bros are considering making a sequel to Watchmen. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??? Did they read the book??? There can't be a sequel, not unless Alan Moore write the sequel himself, and we all know that's not going to happen. For those of you who don't know, Moore hates book adaptation, especially his books.

6) Stephen Chow will direct and play Kato in the upcoming The Green Hornet movie. Big fan of Chow and I can't wait to see what he can do in his American directorial debut. I just hope that the guys at Original Film let him do what he does. Still unsure of Seth Rogen as The Green Hornet though.

7) A few weeks ago, rumors that the new Dragonball live-action movie trailer was out. So I searched for it only to find that it was a hoax and that it was just a few clips of the movie blended in with Forbidden Kingdom, the Jackie Chan Jet Li movie. Disappointed, I started doing some research only to find release pictures of the movie. Point is, This looks HORRIBLE!!!

8) Avi Arad, former head of Marvel's movie business, has optioned the rights to Mass Effect. Turns out that this game was a no-brainer to adapt into a movie and have been in talks since it's release. Arad has started his own production company since leaving Marvel, and instead of making comic-book adaptation, he's moving toward making game adaptation. He is currently working on Lost Planet with David Hayter, who pen Watchmen. Can't be worse than Uwe Boll.

9) Ryder Cup. How fun was it watching all these golfer pump up the crowd and ride their club rodeo style, ala Happy Gilmore. Only if this much emotion was shown more often, outside of the majors, especially on the LPGA, then their would be more viewers. Gitty up. Congrats US for winning the cup in a very long time.

10) Last week the WPS, Women's professional Soccer, allocated the US national players to their 7 team as they get ready to start the new league in 2009 and this week they will divide up international players who have committed to playing in the league. I really hope that this league doesn't fold. The problem with WUSA was that they tried to get to big. As long as the WPS knows how big they can get, then I think that it will be successful. Soccer is becoming more popular in the U.S., thanks to the MLS, but woman sports in general still struggle to make ends meat. It would be nice for U.S. player to have a place to play at a high level, as oppose to trying to play overseas or in semi-pro league that shares field with recreational teams. NBA star, Steve Nash, is part owner of the league.

Since Cinematically Correct man-crush Seth Rogen is writing and starring in "The Green Hornet", it already had stepped up and become an anticipated flick. On Friday, Sony stuck a press release on the official site of the movie letting the world know that not only is Stephen Chow going to play Kato to Rogen's Green Hornet, Chow is going to direct this cinematic bag of awesome.

That piece of news has officially made "The Green Hornet" the greatest movie ever not made yet that will come out in 2009. Chow is the director of "Shaolin Soccer", "CJ7", and the great, great "Kung Fu Hustle". He also starred in those movies so he is no stranger to acting and directing. Here is the opening dance sequence from "Kung Fu Hustle", which, like many others, was my initiation to Stephen Chow. After seeing this dance, I was sold.

Back when it was announced that funnyman Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express) would star and co-write a new Green Hornet movie, all I could do was hang my head and shake it in disbelief. Now, the news that multitalented Chinese maestro Stephen Chow (CJ7) has joined the production as director and co-star has me thinking the movie just might be worth it after all.

I found his Shaolin Soccer to be painfully unfunny but his next movie Kung Fu Hustle is a work of genius that stands proudly among my favorite films. Initially created in 1936 for a radio show, the Green Hornet is the alter-ego of rich newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who fights crime at night alongside his Chinese servant Kato.

The Green Hornet has already been brought to the screen several times, most famously in a 60s TV series starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee (above). The new film, co-written with Evan Goldberg (Pineapple Express) is set for 2010.

Fun Fact: Green Hornet is the grand-nephew of the Lone Ranger, another popular radio show character that may soon grace the silver screen once again.

Chow Signs On With Green Hornet

Various media have already pounced on the real-life super team of Stephen Chow, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg working in collaboration on The Green Hornet. Yesterday should've been claimed as "Tented Pants Day" as geeks around the world rejoiced. I wasn't one of them.

It's not that I don't like superhero / comic book movies. I do. Good ones at least. Of recent years, I've thoroughly enjoyed X-Men 2, Iron Man, and the two new editions to the Batman saga. But I feel frazzled these days. Every summer is filled with special effects-laden, big budget sprawling films that, ever since the travesty of Daredevil, have stepped up in the quality of the storytelling and attention to character development. When I was a kid, there were a lot of shit movies that relied solely on the intensity of its special effects to draw people in. Things have been stepped up a notch now and it has even reached a point where the movies are being mocked (in Superhero Movie, an atrocious addition to the "[Insert Genre] Movie" series) and deconstructed (such as in Hancock).

But I'm tired. It's mostly because I'm lazy. I'm tired of back stories. Tired of spending up to thirty minutes establishing who these folks are, why they're super, and how they decided to fight against the bad folks in the world around them. Yes, these are somewhat entertaining at times (such as the snappy dialogue in Iron Man or Hellboy's brief introduction). I'm also tired of being pulverized by effects. Transformers was indicative of this for me. Excellent acting by Shia LeBeouf (glad you got to keep your pinkie Shia) and an entertaining, funny story line but, in the theatre, it became nearly impossible to follow the action scenes, especially during the transformation scenes and with the quick editing cuts Michael Bay used.

My other problem with superhero / comic book movies is that I know that there is not a lack of characters. That's not a problem for the studios paying for the movies but I think that after a while we will run out of interesting people. I've already seen mention of a movie featuring "Ant-Man" from Marvel Entertainment. This does not appeal to me and I find it really hard to believe that it is going to bring in audiences en masse as Iron Man or X-Men did. There's a reason why some characters are universally known even outside geekdom and a reason why some are not. Please, have your niche favorites, but don't expect the movies to be well-funded or well-attended by the general public.

I hope this post isn't supernegative about superheroes. I'm an admitted scifi/fantasy/geek and nerdlord. I love this stuff. But I love quality. We might get that with The Green Hornet, a character I'm only familiar with through knowledge of Bruce Lee's life, especially with Rogen and Chow on board. But I wonder about the sustainability of thrusting out so many comic book movies year after year and whether the well of quality will run dry. That's what's most important. Not the fans that already exist but the the potential fans to be garnered from creating three-dimensional characters that people outside of the community can relate with.

On a related note, check out this interview with a true geek hero, Grant Imahara of Mythbusters, who I'm jealous of not only for being wonderfully talented and smart but for getting to work with the lovely Kari.

Trendle and Fran Striker, who also created the Lone Ranger. The series, which ran until 1952 on the Mutual and NBC Blue networks, followed the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy whose life is changed when he inherits his father's crusading newspaper, The Daily Sentinel. He saves the life of Kato, a Japanese man with incredible technical and martial-arts skills, who becomes Britt's closest ally -- and transforms Britt's car into the supercharged Black Beauty, which gives them an edge as they search for evidence to expose the city's underworld in the newspaper. When Britt and Kato witness a brutal mob hit, Britt invents his secret identity -- taking his name from his powerful car's defective horn. A skilled fighter and expert marksman, the Green Hornet uses two special, non-lethal guns to subdue criminals: one fires a potent knock-out gas while the other produces the "Hornet's Sting" -- an electric shock.

We’ve known for a long while that Seth Rogen has been attached to co-write and star in a big-screen version of The Green Hornet – and this week, he finally found not only the guy who will play the Hornet’s faithful sidekick, Kato, but also the guy who will direct the big-budget action-comedy. And, as luck would have it, they’re the same guy: Stephen Chow.

Yes, the Chinese madman behind the very OTT Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer is set to bring his Looney Tunes sense of humour and kinetic, thousand-miles-an-hour visual sense to his first American movie – as well as playing the role made most famous by perhaps the most famous movie martial artist of them all, Bruce Lee.

"I'm excited to be taking on 'The Green Hornet' -- obviously I've been a huge fan of the show since I was a kid," Chow told The Hollywood Reporter. "The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true." Lee, of course, played Kato in the 1960s TV show.

"Stephen was always my and Evan's first choice for director and to play Kato,” laughed Rogen. “We just hope that he never finds out we're not the Wachowski Brothers."Certainly, any doubts over whether Rogen – who may have slimmed down for the role, but is still a long way from your average action hero – could acquire the necessary action chops for his role as Britt Reid, a millionaire newspaper publisher who becomes the masked crimefighter when nobody is looking, have been assuaged. As anyone who saw Kung Fu Hustle knows, Chow can kick ass with the best of them!

Whilst not a fan of Chow's films, I think given the right material and a good script this could potentially be either amazingly good or a total disaster and given Rogen and Goldberg wrote both the excellent Superbad and the risible Pineapple Express, which way this will go is anyones guess!

June 25, 2010 is the release date for the Sony film, which is produced by Neal H. Moritz. Filming should start next year, after Chow completes work on Kung Fu Hustle 2.

Stephen Chow is set to both star in and direct the new "Green Hornet" flick. Fuckin right! He will star as Kato, the role made famous back in the day by Bruce Lee. I'm a huge Chow fan so this is pretty dope news, but I remember the Kato character as being pretty one dimensional "silent Asian assassin," so I hope they flesh him out a little bit more.

Stephen Chow, one of Asia's most popular box-office draws as the award-winning star and director of such films as Kung Fu Hustle, CJ7, and Shaolin Soccer, will direct Seth Rogen and star opposite him as Kato in Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet, set for release June 25, 2010, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The screenplay is by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, who will also executive produce. Neal H. Moritz is the producer through his Original Film production company.

In tapping Chow to helm The Green Hornet, Sony Pictures Entertainment continues a long association with the star and director. Under its local language initiative, Sony co-produced and released Chow's Kung Fu Hustle, which went on to gross over $100 million worldwide and received a Golden Globe® nomination as well as six Hong Kong Film Awards and five Taiwan Golden Horse Awards. Sony also released CJ7.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "When Seth, Evan, and Neal said they wanted Stephen Chow to be part of 'The Green Hornet,' it was a fantasy. Now that it's happening, it's almost too good to be true. Stephen's been a very important part of the Sony family for many years, so it's truly serendipitous for us to be moving forward with him directing the movie and starring as Kato."

Chow added, "I'm excited to be taking on 'The Green Hornet' -- obviously, I've been a huge fan of the show since I was a kid. The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true. I'm grateful to my friends at Sony, who have shown so much faith in me for so many years. I'm looking forward to working with Seth, Evan, Neal, and the team at Sony, and I'm eager to get started."

Moritz said, "'The Green Hornet' is a dream project and it's come together in a dream way. Seth will be fantastic in the lead role, and Stephen was the only name on the list for Kato. The material is a perfect match for his sensibilities -- Stephen in the director's chair is the best thing for the film."

Rogen said, "Stephen was always my and Evan's first choice for director and to play Kato. We just hope that he never finds out we're not the Wachowski Brothers."

Ori Marmur will serve as the Executive Producer of the film.

Chow previously told us of his interest in the project. "When I saw the program, I thought it was a great role and thought it was outstanding, because I'm Chinese and it's Bruce Lee, but I'd be happy to play that role," he said.

Later, we asked Seth Rogen about approaching Chow, who answered, "It's a very intense action movie and the relationship between Green Hornet and Kato, a lot of comedy comes from that. At first actually, we weren't even sure going in we could be more of a Jet Li type guy who maybe isn't the funniest guy in the world, but he's physically very impressive, or whether it would be more of a Stephen Chow type guy who can do martial arts, but clearly has a sense of humor. In the version that we've made it seems like a Stephen Chow type guy would be more suitable for the role. Again, until they officially greenlight it, it's hard to make any of those decisions."

The phrase "HBO miniseries" alone makes me tingle. True I didn't watch "John Adams" but it was clearly a critical (23 Emmy nods!) and fan fave. Anyhow, looks like the next historical event to be adapted for the cabler is about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. "Story will focus on the perspectives of lesser-known historical figures that were connected to the assassination and the subsequent media frenzy and manhunt."

Speaking of "John Adams" and the creative team behind it..."HBO and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman have engaged scribe Kirk Ellis to craft a series based off of the James Ellroy books "American Tabloid: A Novel" and "The Cold Six Thousand". The project will present a dark alternative history of the 1960s, following three men and their shifting alliances with the CIA, the Mafia and the Kennedys. The books feature such ’60s fixtures as J. Edgar Hoover, Howard Hughes, Jimmy Hoffa, the Kennedy clan and Frank Sinatra. HBO has held the option on the Ellroy books for years, and the network and Playtone haven’t decided yet whether to adapt them into a regular series or a mini. That decision will be made as Ellis gets a handle on the material in a development process that will begin with a pilot script. Hanks, Goetzman and Ellis will serve as exec producers. Playtone, which brings "Big Love" back for its third season in January, is currently in post-production on the 10-hour, $200 million miniseries "The Pacific," which Hanks and Goetzman exec produced with Steven Spielberg."

Matt Tolmach and Doug Belgrad commented, respectively, with the following:

When Seth, Evan, and Neal said they wanted Stephen Chow to be part of 'The Green Hornet,' it was a fantasy. Now that it's happening, it's almost too good to be true. Stephen's been a very important part of the Sony family for many years, so it's truly serendipitous for us to be moving forward with him directing the movie and starring as Kato.

I'm excited to be taking on 'The Green Hornet' -- obviously, I've been a huge fan of the show since I was a kid. The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true. I'm grateful to my friends at Sony, who have shown so much faith in me for so many years. I'm looking forward to working with Seth, Evan, Neal, and the team at Sony, and I'm eager to get started.

Regarding Rogen's selection for Kato, here's what he had to say:

Stephen was always my and Evan's first choice for director and to play Kato. We just hope that he never finds out we're not the Wachowski Brothers.

It's a very intense action movie and the relationship between Green Hornet and Kato, a lot of comedy comes from that. Again, until they officially greenlight it, it's hard to make any of those decisions.

Sony Pictures Entertainment continues their association with Chow, the studio having co-produced and released his earlier film, "Kung Fu Hustle", which went on to gross $100 million at the box office worldwide. "Hustle" received a Golden Globe Nomination as well as 6 Hong Kong Film Awards and 5 Taiwan Golden Horse Awards.

Well, that settles it then. I don't know about you, but I cannot wait to see the kind of chemistry that Rogen and Chow will bring to the big screen. "The Green Hornet". Coming June 25, 2010.

Normally, I couldn't care less about The Green Hornet, but I celebratorily (word?) threw my hands in the air when I read this news. Chow is one of the few people out there whose work I'd search the world over for. And given the profile of The Green Hornet, I imagine he'll have quite the sandbox to play in. That Rogen guy is pretty likable, too (even if he's just Seth Rogen in every role).

My only concern is that this doesn't step on the toes of the rumored Kung Fu Hustle 2. Not that it needs a sequel, but gosh darn it, I love it so.

And lots of great funny moments. It is full of all kinds of things that makes Stephen Chow's movies awesome. I think he has some kind of fascination with shoes. They seem to play a roll in all this films. There is not much fighting but what there is, is over the top. Which is awesome. This one is more of a family movie. Which is all right because it is really, really good. Check it out for sure.

An awesome movie. Got watch it now. Stephen Chow has another hit in this hands.

5 out of 5 GT (GT = Good Times)

Good news everyone, a new contributor has just joined The Movie Planet. Call him...The Broadcaster! The Broadcaster will mostly be reviewing randomly chosen movies on a regular basis in his column Broadcasted! Reviews but may also pop in to tell you about new DVDs being released.

The Broadcaster, who describes himself as half-Chinese half-French and totally not handsome, likes all kinds of movies (except horror), but he's generally kinder to comedies and harsher to serious-minded dramas. His favorite movies include Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's trilogy (as well as other heist flicks) and recent East Asian fare from the likes of Zhang Yimou (Curse Of The Golden Flower), Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle) and Wong Kar-Wai (My Blueberry Nights).

He wants you to know he is usually very critical in his reviews, and his first one will be for the 2006 teen comedy John Tucker Must Die, starring the awesomely hot Sophia Bush, with many more to follow. Thus, please give a warm welcome to The Broadcaster, the alternate voice of The Movie Planet.
