The current status is nothing more than a farsa, designed by past political leaders who tolds the US that we were happy being a colony, and told the people of Puerto Rico and the international community we had self-government enough to no longer be considered a colony.  This explains the different official names of Puerto Rico in English in Spanish (no it is not for aesthetic reasons).  This also explain why in Spanish, and only in the island of course, Puerto Rico is referred to as a país, the Spanish word for country, which obviusly we are not.  These are little things that show how different the views of the status are from the outside and the inside, which in my opinion, it is not a coincidence that they vary so greatly.  The leaders of 1952 knew what they were doing, and above all, knew the Commonwealth (or Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico in Spanish in case you did not know, see the differences know?, roughly tranlasted it is: Free Associated State of Puerto Rico) was a temporary status.  Their intentions? Perhaps and most probably was to allow Puerto Rico to become independent one day, but I guess destiny has other plans, as day to day, more and more Puerto Ricans favor and acknowledge statehood as the true unique solution to the Puerto Rico status issue.  It is now in the people's hands, to choose leaders that very clearly are aiming to fool, or to choose those who will deliver the solutios needed, including the solution of the status issue, which I believe and hope will be statehood.

El natalicio de José Celso Barbosa nos brinda la oportunidad de celebrar el ideal de la Estadidad. El Padre de la Estadidad para Puerto Rico, Barbosa, fue un hombre visionario que ha inspirado a todos los líderes estadistas. Su conocimiento de la democracia en los Estados Unidos lo convenció de que ésa era la solución para garantizarle a Puerto Rico el fin del colonialismo y el camino al progreso.

Esa visión de futuro que tuvo Barbosa trazó el camino al cambio que ahora nos toca lograr. Por eso es necesario celebrar esta fecha dentro del marco de lo que es mejor para nuestra patria. Y debemos enfocarnos en la búsqueda de soluciones que enderecen el rumbo que queremos para Puerto Rico.

El Partido Nuevo Progresista nació inspirado por la visión de Barbosa y por las causas de Estadidad, Seguridad y Progreso. Sostiene que el bienestar de Puerto Rico está en la culminación de nuestra relación con los Estados Unidos. Su ideal se nutre de la estabilidad que nos brinda la ciudadanía americana. Y su crecimiento continúa porque nuestro pueblo se ha ido convenciendo de que el progreso que se merece nuestra isla se logrará como el estado 51 de la Nación.

Las raíces del Partido Nuevo Progresista están en el cambio y en la igualdad que conlleva la Estadidad. Como ciudadanos americanos no podemos conformarnos con el status actual de Puerto Rico, un status transitorio en el que no podemos disfrutar de los mismos derechos que nuestros conciudadanos de los estados de la Unión Americana.

La división que hemos sufrido por esta lucha es una de las causas del estancamiento que sufre nuestra Isla. El fin de esta división abrirá el camino al progreso y a una unión patriótica de propósito.

Acepto que en el pasado nuestro pueblo ha estado reacio a un cambio de status. Reconozco que algunos todavía no se han convencido de que tenemos que dar este paso natural hacia la culminación de nuestra ciudadanía. Y sé que tenemos que educar a nuestra gente para que entienda todas las bondades de la Estadidad. Es por eso que el mensaje de cambio de nuestra colectividad emana de un profundo compromiso con nuestro ideal y con Puerto Rico.

Son muchos los mitos que se han propagado a través de los años. El temor al inglés y a la supuesta pérdida de nuestra cultura e identidad como pueblo, en ocasiones, ha impedido hablar de este tema con seriedad.

Es indispensable que los puertorriqueños estén claros en que los derechos no se renuncian por miedo. Nuestro orgullo patrio no está en juego. La camisa de fuerza que nos aguanta ahora mismo es la indecisión. La falta de igualdad política y económica que sufrimos bajo el Estado Libre Asociado es el problema. Y el problema no puede ser parte de la solución.

Soy estadista porque quiero vivir a plenitud como puertorriqueño y ciudadano americano.

Como puertorriqueño, me honra que esta isla es mi cuna, la de mis padres y la de mis hijos. Y como ciudadano americano creo que en la igualdad está el progreso garantizado para los hijos de mis hijos.

Como puertorriqueño valoro nuestra gente, nuestro potencial y nuestra cultura. Y como ciudadano americano aprecio la Constitución federal que me garantiza la protección de esa cultura y me provee la oportunidad de enriquecerla y avanzarla.

Como puertorriqueño me mueve un profundo deseo de poner a nuestra isla a la vanguardia de la economía global y lucho como tú por el bien de nuestra patria todos los días. Y como ciudadano americano estoy convencido de que la estadidad nos ofrece un camino seguro de prosperidad.

No tenemos que escoger entre ser buenos puertorriqueños o ser fieles ciudadanos americanos. Pero lo que sí tenemos que exigir y obtener son todos los derechos que deben provenir de nuestra ciudadanía.

Es imperativo que como ciudadanos americanos obtengamos el derecho al voto por el Presidente, que logremos una representación plena en el Congreso y que participemos en igualdad de condiciones en todo programa federal de desarrollo socio-económico. Al así hacerlo, escogemos trabajar por Puerto Rico para honrar a nuestra patria y para aportar a la Nación Americana.

Por eso no basta con celebrar nuestro ideal y recordar las lecciones de Barbosa. Tenemos que comprometernos a defender lo que valoramos en momentos difíciles como los que vivimos.

Nuestra unión con los Estados Unidos está siendo atacada por un liderato de gobierno sin el consentimiento de los puertorriqueños. Tenemos que hacernos escuchar y enviar un mensaje claro de que estamos orgullosos de ser ciudadanos americanos y de que lucharemos para que Puerto Rico vuelva a brillar como la estrella del Caribe que es.

Try as I might, I just can not consolidate my online life into just one place.  I'm spread out all over the place.  Check out the sidebar to the right to see most of my online communities!

More and more I'm using this Wordpress blog as my central web location, with all the aforementioned websites pointing here.  There have been some useful tools that let the Web 2.0 crowd interact with one another.  I've been using Facebook's Twitter application to update my Facebook status from Twitter (as I can't access Facebook at work, but can access Twitter).  I've been looking for something similar for Myspace.  Can't access that website from work either!  What, my bosses actually want me to work?

So I finally stumbled upon hellotxt.com. It is a pretty useful tool if you are spread out all over the web like me.

To the right you can see all of the Web 2.0 services that Hellotxt works with.  Truthfully I hadn't even heard of most 'em!

Once you enter all of your information for all of your accounts you are presented with a text box to input your updates into.  I haven't played with the picture or video feature, but it is nice to know that it is there if you need it.

Type in your update and it automatically sends it to the services you have selected.

Another nice feature of Hellotxt.com is the Social Time Line.  You can view all of your friends updates right in the Hellotxt framework.  Everything is centralized!  Facebook is not supported yet, but according to the website, it is coming soon.

Of course, Hellotxt wouldn't be complete without the ability to send in updates via text messaging from your cell phone.  I only have a work cell with no ability to text, so I won't be using this service.

All in all, hellotxt.com will be helping me out a lot. I'm just glad I can consolidate a little bit!

I am still working hard at keeping up my Japanese. I am going to take the Level One JLPT this year, even though I probably won't pass. I am taking a really heavy load in school, so Japanese is my second priority for the time being. Since I am on break this month, I will see how much I can Japanese I can stuff into my coconut. My teacher/language partner/friend is moving next week, so I am beginning my search for a new Japanese person.

I was about to tackle Linux in my last postings, that has officially been put on the back burner. There was no way I could manage my school, job, Japanese, and other items on my hierarchy of needs.

SHOW PROCEDURE STATUS;

The status update is special for a few reasons. One is that status updates are the most immediately present type of expression now available to online social network users. They allow us to condense our thoughts, feelings and apprehensions into an singular message that conveys the subjective truth only of that moment. Much like thoughts, feelings and apprehensions, status updates are temporary and fade into and out of our consciousness like a cloud.

Status updates are also significant because of their audience. While one hand it may seem that expressing status is an act of inherent self-consciousness, it is at the same time inherently fearless of its audience and potentially of any sense of otherness or separateness. Surely this fearlessness could be interpreted as narcissism, or the assumption that your "friends" give a shit about what you're doing, thinking or feeling in the moment. Whether the expression is narcissistic or transcendent really comes down to the authenticity of the message, whether the user is expressing the essence of his non-self or a manifestation of ego. Certainly it's not an either or situation, but the relative authenticity of the status update determines its potential for unified consciousness and unmediated connection between a user and his friends.

In any case, because you are not addressing a particular individual or group, you remain blissfully (narcissism) or  consciously (transcendent) ignorant your audience whether it's your best friend, your co-worker or your mother. This is an ultimate act of personal transparency which contains a potential honesty and authenticity traditionally reserved for communication only between known and trusted parties.

This immediacy of expression combined with a potential critical mass of users could lead to the most believable manifestation of collective consciousness yet achieved. Imagine the ability to glance at your mobile device and hold in mind the being and doing of every one you know at all times.

A mídia, que assume papel fundamental tanto na indicação de questões relevantes para a compreensão de qualquer investigação quanto para lançar uma nuvem de fumaça e atrapalhar os olhos cansados do leitor, ocupa lugar de destaque em nossos dias.

Parece-me cada vez mais pertinente compreendermos tal fenômeno. Para tanto, sugiro a leitura de "O caso Veja", de Luís Nassif. Trata-se de um conjunto de reportagens, para não dizer o tão desgastado "dossiê", do desserviço jornalistico proporcionado pela revista Veja, que deixou de ser um monstro temido e passou a ser ridicularizada por suas trapalhadas e más intenções. No entanto, a mudança de status que sofreu não a deixa menos culpada pelos erros que comete, nem menos perigosa.

Don't believe me? I would bet, if you're reading this blog, that you could name at least 5 of your Facebook friends that take ultimate pride in their daily Status updates. There are whole websites dedicated to the funniest, smartest, most outrageous status'. Maybe you are one of them. I certainly am. There is nothing better than when I can post a quip or half sentence that makes me smile--and if it makes others smile, all the better!

When you think about it, isn't Friendfeed and twitter close to the equivalent of showing off your bling in the form of links, breaking news or sarcastic banter. "See how smart I am, how funny I can be, watch me count down to my vacation or wedding or 'Half Birthday'"...

Which frankly, don't get me started on how annoying countdowns are. How cliché, how pedestrian...;) Because of course with every symbol of status, there are those of us who will tear it apart and judge to no end.

So choose you words carefully, your entire social network is watching...and casting a judging eye.

El teléfono móvil tuvo en sus inicios (en los países occidentales) la facultad de ser un objeto que reflejaba el status de quién lo poseía. Facultad que fue perdiendo al convertirse en un objeto de consumo masivo.

Lo que comenzó siendo una herramienta de comunicación personal es en la actualidad una fuente inagotable de múltiples controversias sobre su uso y abuso.

El trabajo mencionado, refleja la incidencia que tiene su aparición en un contexto diferente al occidental aunque de igual modo genera ilusiones de libertad junto a la frustración de constatar que termina conviertiendose en una nueva herramienta para perpetuar el control y dominio (reforzando el rol de género) mientras no termine de convertirse en una herramienta tecnológica de uso masivo.

THE GOOD

Sewanee has playwrights. Bread Loaf did not, does not and, unless I'm mistaken, neither does anyplace else.

And what an asset the playwrights have been. A few days ago some great content in our first open-mike reading got lost in the claustrophobic, fluorescent-lit, chaotic atmosphere of a ping-pong room. Afterwards, the theater people stepped up to the plate. The second open mike, which took place last night, had more dramatic lighting, better pacing and better seating for the audience.

The playwrights extended a personal kindness to me before they knew who I was. (Disclosure! I'm married to a theater critic. Despite the respect and affection we have for theater people, at home we can not socialize with them due to ethical concerns.) My husband said, "Theater people are the best in the world." 

In Kansas City I volunteer for a cat rescue group. When a local actor and actress applied to adopt a kitten, they were almost refused because of the actor stereotype of unstable lifestyles and incomes. I intervened. "I know theater people," I said. "They would run into burning houses to save their cats."

At Sewanee I've been impressed with the way writers from different genres mingle and work together. Everyone dines with everyone. Playwrights with poets, fiction students with poetry faculty, auditors with fellows. I heard more than one person say they'd made a special effort to attend the readings given by the writers conference staff. 

After last night's open mike, Sewanee program manager Cheri Peters said that in her 19 years on the job, she'd never seen such an outpouring of support among fellow writers.

BREAKING NEWS! Tim O'Brien just brought 150 people (half the audience?) to tears during his 4:15 reading of a personal essay. More later.

THE BAD

At Sewanee the name badges identify conference goers as fellows or scholars.  If you're neither a fellow nor a scholar, your name and genre is followed by white space. You are...nothing.

At Bread Loaf we knew who the fellows and scholars were from the bios in the welcome packet, but we weren't reminded on a daily and hourly basis by name tags. At least, that was how things were in 1989.

You've heard it before, and I can not refute it: You never get out of high school. Sadly, the writers who paid full price get the fewest freebees. To me, that seems unfair, but I suppose it's the way of the world (them that has, gets) even in genteel Sewanee.

Complaints about the caste system at writers conferences are not new. In 1989 Bread Loaf students grumbled plenty. A longtime Bread Loafer told me, "The segregation used to be much worse. In the old days the faculty ate at a long table that was raised on a platform."

It would be nice if Sewanee kept the fellow and scholar bios in the welcome packet, but put a different identifier under the names and genres on the badges. Why not a six-word bio?

THE COPPERHEADS

We were warned. And indeed, early one morning, one conference attendee saw a copperhead on a well-traveled sidewalk. I suspect that in a few months literary magazine editors will be scratching their heads. What's with all the snake poems? This makes the third one this month.

As for Bread Loaf, if you take a walk in a nearby field recently harvested and festooned with bales of hay, you'll see hundreds of dead mice. Not dangerous like copperheads, but hard to shake from the image memory bank.

For a very long time in our culture older age conferred a special type of status upon an individual. We were expected to treat those older than us with respect. By virtue of age individuals older than us were referred to by their formal title and their last names. While class distinctions reigned supreme people were looked down upon for attempting to cross class barriers. If you tried to attain a class higher than your own too quickly you were seen as reaching too far and were scorned for it. For those in higher classes seen with those beneath them or participating in "low class" activities they were seen as behaving below their stations. The same could be said of those trying to cross those barriers of status determined by age. At school students shouldn't attempt to befriend their professors. At work the boss shouldn't fraternize with their younger subordinates. Friendships should be maintained with people of the same approximate age. All of this concern with class and status maintained a certain type of power structure. The old were knowledgeable and powerful. By excluding the youth, at least until they paid their dues, control remained in the hands of the aged.

I think it is the legacy of that class and status mentality that, in part, contributes to some people's aversion to age disparate relationships. Along with age and the associated status there is assumed to be a level of power an older person must maintain. By becoming romantically involved with a younger person it is assumed that they either unjustly wield that power over their partner or they abdicate that power in some way. Both options are seemingly reprehensible. When it comes to romantic relationships our culture is still stuck in a past mindset in which the sort of regimented hierarchies I mentioned before must be maintained.

However, rigid structures of class and age related status in America have slowly been eroding over the past few decades. Certainly much of that can be attributed to the counter-culture movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Youthful protesters questioned the assumption that older meant wiser. As the baby boomers of the 1960s grew up they softened the rigid sense of decorum required by our society. In many business situations it is acceptable to call your co-workers and even bosses by their first names. In the academic world this has also become much more acceptable. In graduate school I was on a first name basis with all of my professors and with several as an undergraduate.

Ultimately, I think this loosening of social rules has been affecting romantic relationships, but to a lesser degree that in other aspects of our lives. May to December romances are traditionally defined as being between a couple with at least ten years between them. It seems that it is much more acceptable for a 22 year old to date a 32 year old, ten years isn't as big of a deal as it once was. Of course the greater the age difference and the younger the more youthful partner is the harder it is for outsiders to accept the relationship. And of course heterosexuals in an age disparate relationship are more accepted than their gay counter parts. Homosexuals are already participating in a transgressive act by coupling, they then transgress even more boundaries by choosing a partner that is significantly older or younger than they are. Thus we find our relationships and ourselves questions in the ways previously described.

hati ini tetap saja begini. adem. tenang. sepi. ciut. tapi selalu hangat oleh reriungan dengan teman-teman yang ada di sekitar saya. agaknya memang Si Pemilik Hidup bikin kesalahan dengan membikin institusi yang bernama pernikahan, dan kemudian menebusnya dengan memberikan teman.
