Since MTV doesn't play music videos anymore, I sometimes fall behind on new music videos. The videos below are both new and old, but they're all pretty cool. Click the song titles to download the track; click the artists for their sites.

Universal Mind Control (U.M.C.) - Common featuring Pharrell

Bonus - Kanye performs "Heartless", his 2nd single from his upcoming album that I had posted amaetuar video of in a prior post, at a T.I. concert in LA this weekend(?). It's the last of the video, after Swagger Like Us and Lockdown, but the beat seems to have developed from earlier versions and it sounds like the song is going to be really good.

Und das ausnahmsweise einmal völlig zurecht. Sie stauchen Hip-Hop wieder Attitüde ein und vergessen beim Umwälzen der Verhältnisse nicht, dass die Leute auch mal feiern müssen.

I've been a hip hop fan for quite a while. Wu Tang, Biggie, Busta, Grandmaster Flash have always been close by (I grew up on the East Coast, go figure). Growing up, I dug much of the underground stuff that came out and was (is) really into the independent movement behind it all. I (like many of you out there) don't like being force fed music. I really enjoy the search. There is nothing better. So, when I started hearing DJ and producers remixing classic hip hop, I just about lost it. Biggie and Wu Tang vs. b-more club = good times. A few new names but more Tameil, Peterson, and who else but Top Billin'(I don't think I've put up a post without at least mentioning them yet). Alright, less talkie talkie more music.

Top Billin' has been consistently catching my ear for quite a while. They blend b-more, electro, rap, as well as numerous other genres amazingly well. There is something about Top Billin' songs that just do it for me. Most importantly, they don't take themselves too seriously (check out their remixes of smell yo dick and eddie murphy's party all the time). Definitely check out their website, as there are tons of free mixes, links and goodness. What I would wouldn't do to get them to come to Minnesota....

alright, that concludes another post of the stay spun. It still amazes me that I can get into music globally. I've posted stuff from England (hostage), Finland, Baltimore, New York, Australia, etc. What the effect of this and whether it is a good thing makes for a great debate. Its easy to forget all the hard work, skill, time, and nerve that goes into the process of making music. A huge part of what draws me to music (and art) is the subjectivity (internal drive/curiosity) and the human experience. If you like the songs posted here, please support the artists. Lastly, here is a remix I haven't been able to escape this week.

Just a few musings to give a general idea of where no more conversations is heading. I (theseldomseenkid) will be bringing you updates every few days just with general thoughts, what I'm listening to at the moment and why. Rather than focus on getting the latest remix or leaked track no matter how poor it is (like so many blogs) I'll just try to talk about anything I think people should be listening to. To give you an idea of my musical tastes I'll post my top ten albums of 2008 so far. Feel free to comment! Here's the very sick Spruce Lee refix of alternative rap group Spank Rock's 'Backyard Betty' and electronic instrumental duo Ratatat's (pictured above) 'Wildcat' to get you started. I recommend both artists, Ratatat in particular! Backyard Betty was originally a very weak, boring opener off Spank Rock's debut album YoYoYoYoYo, but Spruce Lee has created a great track by laying Backyard Betty's rhymes over the mesmerising electronic goodness that is Wildcat. Enjoy!

splatter-punk xl's first post !!! yay !!! reppin an aussie to start (first of many). Kylie Minogue gets plenty of resonance/hyper-love from blogs and we at TSS are about to activate more. she's hot as hell for starters. and whether she's humble enough to let producers twist her vocals up and participate in remixes or she's found a viable niche in electro it doesn't matter- her tracks bang. her most recent record has production from Kish Mauve and Calvin Harris. she's had a long road too. Australian soap actress turned pop star in the 80's with loco-motion.

then she fell into obscurity through the 90's, made a comeback in the nows. She is also a breast cancer survivor.

this track got me into her. great mstrkrft remix. LOVE how they twisted up the vocals. its played out now but still bangs:

more songy, less bangy, still dont know how i feel about CSS:

Again, LOVE the vocals- written produced by the guys who did britney's 'toxic' and 'piece of me'- Avant and Bloodshy:

04_speakerphone

lastly, my current fave remix of kylie by benny blanco & spank rock- its crunk as fuck w/ some jazze pha style to it. don't really care for the rapping, but it works here. LOVE the sirens- sounds like the beat is building a gundam to come rage the dancefloor. ha.

Leiden doesn't have a red light district, but it's still in the Netherlands. I was bound to run into a brothel/ sex club eventually.

At first glance I thought it might be a dance club or a sketchy singles bar, but the hours posted on the door were something like 12:00-16:00. Probably not a dance club. There's no Grolsch or Heineken sign above the door. And it literally has red lights out front.

Like most things seedy and inappropriate, this made me miss my undergrad thesis.

Speaking of seedy and inappropriate, this Diplo/Spank Rock remix is great. It's re-fried 2 Live Crew with a catchy Beach Boys sample. Beautiful.

Plastic Little - Welcome to the Jang House (Halftime/Virgin 2008). LINK (mediafire)

Buy it.. where? Apparently it's due out in the U.S. soon, but release date reports vary. Pitchfork says Sept. 1, some other random site says Sept. 29. Look for it somewhere.

BONUS: Plastic Little and Make A Rising played at my college this past weekend, and here's some video, including a great new song I can't find anywhere called Cougar Huntin'. LINK.

Plastic Little have been destroying parties and gallery openings in Philly for years, and now they're emerging in a ridiculously big way. When I say ridiculously big, I mean they are touring Europe with Jay-Z, sharing stages with M.I.A., Bun-B, and Vampire Weekend, and apparently picked up a deal with Virgin somewhere along the way. Good for them! SQUID's beats are still right on point, and the rhymes are as ridiculous as ever.

Welcome to the Jang House is a sampler of sorts from their European tour, combining EP material, songs from their She's Mature full-length, but most importantly some truly fantastic new tracks, including the Michael Jackson sampling "Cheap Thrills", "I'm Not A Thug", and an outstanding party anthem called "La La Land" featuring their newest member, DJ Si Young. This album has gotten mixed reviews from people who don't mix the joke, and breathless reviews from people who do. This hodge-podge group of great producers, rappers, poets, artists, authors, and actors is going big places.

What a boring write-up. Whatever, I have to go to class.

Indie dance record label Ed Banger released a mixtape earlier this month. After listening to it I concluded it is absolute shit. Seriously, it is total garbage. Considering the incredible rise of Justice and other acts like DJ Mehdi, Mr. Oizo, and SebastiAn, you would think they could release a better album. Hopefully none of these tracks are fresh because they sound like tracks they could have made back in the day when they were trying to get their foot in the door. There were only two songs I found to be mediocre at best; "Stress" by Justice probably due to I saw that amazing show, "Pocket Piano" by DJ Mehdi, and "Decalcomania" by So Me. Sorry but due to the letdown caused by listening to this album earlier today I am not going to post any songs to download. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day with new music to share. Peace and Beats.

Performers on both stages were on their game but while the big names-from Rakim to The Phaycyde to Tribe Called Quest to the Bay's own Blackalicious-rocked the packed main arena with the energy of old school heads proving they could still kick it, the hyperactive young guns on the second stage, including the Kidz in the Hall, Berkeley's The Pack, Spank Rock and Amanda Blake, buzzed over their pint sized audience like first graders after way too much sugar. Where do these kids get all that energy?

As the sun rolled down behind the hills of the amphitheater and headliners Tribe put the finishing touches on a satisfying old school set, the crowd was all smiles and hip swaying, secure that if the day's perfomances were any indication, hip hop's past and future were in good hands. Check the pics inside.-kwan

I was very fortunate to spend Saturday reliving Hip-Hop’s glory days at the ROCK THE BELLS festival. With 2008 marking the first year the ROCK THE BELLS festival will go global with four stops in Europe and one in Japan highlights of the festival include a return to the Glen Helen Pavilion in San Bernardino, CA where last year’s show sold out with a capacity crowd of 45,000 people. Although, I was back stage the entire show and was not able to enjoy the festival as a true fan due to the heat in San Bernardino, the performances I did catch were truly special. Not to mention, it was great being able to mix it up with old friends like Fat Lip (Pharcyde), Fuzzy (Los Angeles’s Power 106), Hen Gee (Ice-T), Herm & Jackie (Dub Magazine), Bri aka DJ 88 and be in the presence of others including will.I.AM (Black Eyed Peas), Rakim, and many more. As you can imagine my number one highlight was seeing NAS perform One Mic. If you love Hip-Hop and you are up to being Exposed to <del datetime="00">LIFE </del>Music this is a must see festival.

About the Festival

Rock The Bells is an annual hip hop festival that took place in California, until just recently when it was announced that the festival will travel to multiple locations. The first festival was held in 2004, and featured a re-united Wu-Tang Clan, who performed 4 months before Ol' Dirty Bastard's death. ROCK THE BELLS has established itself as a world-class hip-hop platform by hosting legendary performances. The 2007 festival series included performances by a reunited Rage Against the Machine, the Wu Tang Clan, Public Enemy celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band and many more. The tradition of top names and memorable performances continues in 2008 as the line-up and routing for this year's ROCK THE BELL 2008 International festival series powered by SanDisk included hip-hop all-stars A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Nas, Mos Def, Rakim, Method Man & Redman, Raekwon & Ghostface (Cuban Linx), Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, Murs, Kidz In The Hall and the reunited The Pharcyde, and special guests. Fans will also see performances by the brightest names in the emerging electro-hip hop scene including Spank Rock, Santogold, Kid Sister, Wale, Jay Electronica and The Cool Kids with hosts B-Real of Cypress Hill and the world renowned Supernatural.

Wahrscheinlich muss in einem derart gewaltätigen Klima ein Genre entstehen, dessen Eskapismus keine Grenze kennt. Weiter auf Tonspion

Thought he's made a name for himself in 2008 already by releasing nearly a half dozen amazing remixes, XXXChange is also very talented in the realm of DJ mixes. Following up Sinden's and fellow Spank Rock affiliate Chris Devlin's mixes is the fourth installation in the We Make It Good mix series, which comes from none other than Spank Rock's go to guy for beats and all around excellent producer XXXChange.

I've been listening to this mix over the last few days, and honestly there's a lot of stuff on here that I wouldn't expect from such a seemingly dance-inspired producer, like tracks from the Rolling Stones, Isaac Hayes, and even Kenny Rogers and the First Edition's "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" aka that song from The Big Lebowski.

It's all wrapped together in a fun, retro-inspired DJ mix, which is just XXXChange's latest masterpiece. I've really been enjoying this guy's recent work, especially his contributions to the latest Kills album, Midnight Boom, as well as pretty much all of his work with Spank Rock. Be on the look out for his contributions to the new DJ supergroup Fully Fitted, whose Re-Edits EP can now be purchased via Turntable Lab.

As we entered through the media area on Day 2, a comforting sense of calm came over me that was not at all present on the first day. Maybe it was because the temperature had dropped a few degrees. Maybe it was because the media area had cleared out a bit. But whatever it was, it set the stage for another memorable day at Lollapalooza. The first people we saw after entering the media area were experimental rockers MGMT, who were being interviewed by MTV at the time. We waited for their interview to end and then approached them to ask a few questions.

Oooh! A four-for-one here. This is because I only caught glimpses of them, but it was enough to either make an impression or make me want to check out more.

Brand New is a rock band out of Long Island that kind of reminds me of something like Linkin Park meets something Mark Hoppus could've orchestrated. The verses are smooth and harmonic, but the choruses are loud and rowdy. I really, really dig 'em. What I overheard of their live show makes me want more. They can really tear it up on songs like "Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows", but are perfectly capable of bringing it down with melodic ballad-like songs such as "Soco Amaretto Lime."

We overheard Okkervil River while we tooled around looking for beer, food and shade. These guys are folksy indie rockers out of Austin, Texas that I think I could get into once I heard more of them, but what we heard from a distance sounded pretty cool.

Spank Rock and DJ AM were pleasant surprises that we stumbled upon while making our way from the south to the north end of the park. Spank Rock was pretty cool, but DJ AM drew us all into the crowd with his mixed version of MIA's "Boys." (PS, MIA is hot, and that song is uber fun). Alex got some great pictures (I'll post 'em once/if he sends 'em to me!), and the crowd just ate it up. Great, great DJ (from someone that doesn't know a whole lot about DJs, I at least know this is one to check out).

Whose CD's will I buy? Brand New fo' sho'
Who will I see when they come back to Mpls? Brand New, absolutely. Okkervil River if they're opening for a band I've got on my "bands to see" list. As for the DJs? Probably not. I'm not much for the club scene, but if they made it to something of a show rather than just spinning at a local club, I'd be more interested.

So, it's Monday. Sanita spent all weekend at Lollapalooza and I spent my weekend in the fair city of Cleveland. I got to see Matt & Kim at my favorite Cleveland venue on Saturday, though, and that was a real treat. Now it's back to the week and back to work for some. Mondays don't mean much to me though, since I have no job and am not in school this summer. BUT, i'm sure all y'alls people out there who have things to do on Mondays will enjoy this little Spank Rock remix, sent to me by a dude named Leg-No in London. He even included a (remixed?) video! It's a fairly decent remix, not making me go cray-cray, but I'll let you decide.
