The Something Awful forums don't have a reputation as the most supportive place you can hang out on the Internet. The E/N threads in particular -- where the topic is monumentally important to the poster, but of little relevance to everyone else -- can sometimes turn pretty hostile. But, as I noted in an earlier post about the epic saga of Dropsy the Clown, sometimes the goons band together to make magic. SomethingAwful inspired me again recently, when I started reading the Watch and Weight forum.

On Watch and Weight, the goons come together to share tips on diet, exercise and even fashion. This sounds like such a bad idea, in theory, especially because the other forums are full of (granted, sometimes hilarious) cracks about people's weight. The fat jokes are nowhere to be found on Watch and Weight, and the kind of E/N posts that are bound to end badly for the original poster aren't even allowed. Instead, it's all encouragement, advice and reports on progress. There are awesome threads on food, running, and lifting weights, and the progress people are making there really got me motivated to get out and exercise again.

Since Watch and Weight got me thinking about getting back into regular running, the first thing I thought of was a running podcast I used to listen to, called Podrunner. If you're looking to take advantage of gadgets to improve your workout, you can't do much better than this. DJ Steveboy mixes up a bunch of tracks from beatport.com at a steady BPM, so you've got some music to help you keep the pace when you're out for a run. I'm not necessarily a big fan of electronica, but there's enough variety in the Podrunner mixes to make them helpful, not annoying.

Podrunner has gotten even better since the last time I listened to it -- a few years ago? Congratulations on keeping it going for so long, DJ Steveboy! -- with the addition of interval mixes. DJ Beatsmith handles this part of Podrunner, upping the tempo for sprints, and bringing it back down for resting periods. A Mario-Kart style series of three tones sets off the shifts, so you don't have to worry about timing the intervals yourself. I gave this a try today, and I found that a 20-minute set went by pretty quickly. Podrunner has a few different interval training programs on offer, designed by a pro running coach, so there's something for runners of all levels. In short, DJ Beatsmith is definitely my new workout buddy.

Ooooops. But I came across her new new script, Quotey, which SomethingAwful so kindly scanned--complete with her notes!

SomethingAwful.com can be hit and miss, but every once in a while, the Forum Goons produce something

SomethingAwful.com can be hit and miss, but every once in a while, the Forum Goons produce something hilarious, poignant, or even ... beautiful? Something Awful is basically the prototype for all the other websites out there that generate laughs by offending people and then watching the offended parties hilariously overreact. It's a great formula, and it works, but it's not everything the site is capable of.

SA Goon and talented artist Gaspy Conana recently started an adventure story thread starring the lovable, tragic Dropsy the Clown. The story begins when he's fired from his job at the circus and forced to hit the road with his little dog. Dropsy doesn't exactly have a lot of advantages when it comes to surviving in the world, but what he lacks in hands and the power of proper speech, he makes up in heart.

A funny thing happened on the forums when Dropsy appeared. Even the most hardened of Goons held off on the snark for a while and took a genuine interest in the plight of the Internet's new favorite clown. This is a group that would normally steer a story like this toward fiery death and sexual acts involving goats, but this time their suggestions were mostly aimed at making sure nothing unpleasant happened to Dropsy.

Gaspy Conana's art style, reminiscent of the best early-90's Scumm Engine games from LucasArts, really hit home with the audience. He even posted Monkey-Island-style map screens, so that readers could track Dropsy's progress. Add a couple of psychedelic musical numbers (Gaspy C. is also a musician) and a whole lot of input from the forum, and you've got an experience that feels totally familiar (if you're a geek, anyway) and fresh at the same time.

The main Dropsy storyline has ended, but Conana announced he'll create some mini-games later this month, and follow those up later with a full-fledged point-and-click adventure game. What is it about Dropsy that captivates even a tough crowd like the Goons? Read the saga for yourself and tell me what you think.

[Thanks to the lovely and fearsome Eliza Gauger at Ectoplasmosis for introducing me to Dropsy.]
