I've always wondered about the twitter craze and why it took off, but never got around to signing up. When Identi.ca burst on the scene I signed up (it's Canadian so I supported it). Most of the people on it were from twitter and other similar sites, so it was not a new crowd. They quickly scrambled to gather as many "friends" as possible, and almost overloaded the system with comments like, "this is just an other twitter clone". Well Duh. After following and posting unnecessary comments for about a week now, I can honestly say I still don't get it. It's like having a bunch a people in a room all blurting out the the first things that comes into their heads. Or worse they push their cyber agenda, hog the airways and promote their blogs (I put my fair share of plugs in too). It just seems that credibility is measured by how many people are following your posts, just like in school the one with the most friends wins. Many users post the same banter to numerous micro blog sites at once, like why? It's becoming an acceptable form of spam to tell the world you're going to lunch or that Plurk (whatever that is) is down. Reminds me of the old text chat rooms but with a lot less flamers. Now to be fair under the deafening noise of mundane posts there is conversations going on and information being passed, but any IM client could do that. I chat (sorry micro blog) with a friend in Pristina and we exchange quick notes on what going on. The time zone difference is such that we don't engage live, so we really we could do this by email, it's not like we are wasting paper. For now I probably will not cancel my Indenti (@REM) account, and maybe I will have that eureka moment where I suddenly see the infinite micro blogging universe and understand the meaning of it all. But I don't think so, still if you want to guide me on the path to the meaning of micro blogging send me a "dent" and help me change my mind.

Do you Twitter?

If you don't use Twitter (or "tweet"), you're likely to have heard about someone who does.

The "what-are-you-doing-now" micro blogging site has undergone incredible growth since its inception.

[caption id="attachment_265" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Fail Whale"][/caption]

So much so, that one of the main complaints of the system's users follows the many instances of "overload" it often encounters. When it does, users receive an image of a "fail whale" being lifted by small birds with the message "Twitter is over capacity". Unfortunately, that has happened often since its meteoric rise - discouraging many users that have become frustrated with the system's reliability.

For those of us in branding & marketing, Twitter is an entire world of opportunity. Certainly, Twitter has offset the ongoing loss of direct access to consumer bases shown in falling television ratings and ever-smaller radio audiences. Today, most eyes are on social media and the marketers that are ready (and able) to react.

So the new channel is open...but now what? How does your brand leverage itself in this new arena?

Obviously, Twitter's main functions are community building, consumer networking, public relations, branding, and general business (and personal) updates.

Yet...for all it's advantages, Twitter has lacked the ability to prove it's financial worth - as Google did with Adwords.

While most consumers are literally "consumed" with brand loyalty, the ability to connect with others that share their interests in a non-branded way is a gateway to a new social community. Website forums used to provide this connection - but they were always tied to a specific brand, and certainly not neutral in their scope. Twitter provides everyone with the opportunity to establish, and grow their own social network - a truly new, unique marketing channel.

So how do you Tweet? What use of Twitter have you had success in? What do you see it's future as a tool for society? Is Twitter here to stay, or just a passing fad?

So, here it is. My first generic blog post. Everyone needs that first moment to establish their online 'voice'. To get your readership something to read, and to garner what to expect in upcoming blogs. Thus- I write for you all.

First, some background. I am what is fondly known as a Serial Entrepreneur. Believe it or not, this phrase is actually registered with wikipedia- a shocking revelation for me when I found this out. It actually gave me a bit of credibility, in my own head mind you. But it means that I love starting companies, working my ass off, and then selling them or moving on. Only once did I ever say, "I will never sell this company". Six months later, I did. It was a marketing and PR firm. I've regretted it ever since.

The beautiful thing was I made enough money from that transaction that I decided to do what everybody with some cash lying around does: invest. I became a real estate investor overnight. Over the period of four years, I would become a foreclosure expert, short sale innovator, and successful speaker. None of which gave me any satisfaction (though it did manage to build a pretty portofolio for me).

I woke morning after morning increasingly unmotivated to do anything. Then, the best offer landed in my lap. Undisputedly, Colorado's best marketing company split and the talent asked me to come back into the industry and run the company.

Seeing as my short story is getting longer- I'll cut to the chase. This blog is about not only my getting my feet back into the pool I belong in, but more importantly, my education of what's changed in the last four years. With technological changes, social networking taking a lead, and many other innovations, I plan to educate myself (and thus you) with what's hot, what's going to stay, and what's simply not. But more importantly-- I'm going to rock this nation with the best marketing and advertising firm ever created. Nobody's got anything on me... uh, hopefully.

The new version of the site, which has just emerged from private beta testing, allows real estate agent members to feed property listings information to the site and "basically use it as a calling card of existing and previous inventory," said Brian Columbus, founder and CEO of HomePerks LLC, based in Oak Brook, Ill.

The site also has added business networking components, and allows users to connect with other professionals. "In some ways it is similar to Facebook but more business-related," Columbus said.

Sabrina Simpson, a Realtor for Prudential California Realty in Moorpark, Calif., said she decided to sign up for a HomePerks membership and she has invited other agents from her office. "I personally like the program. I think it has a lot of potential," she said, noting that she can use the rewards as an incentive for visitors to open houses, and as an incentive for other agents to refer business to her.

So who owns this blog? Initially I thought, Company XYZ because they pay John Doe a salary to create and update the blog. Then I looked up the definition of what a blog is and suddenly it's not so clear since John Doe has contributed some of his own topics and his own opinions on this public blog site which he has created using his own name.

So who owns this blog? I'd be interested in your thoughts on this and what the best way is to resolve and prevent this type of scenario from occurring again. For now, Company XYZ is currently going to seek legal counsel, and John Doe has moved on to other endeavors.

"No one should submit themselves to the indignity of creating a user profile and friend connections based on cola or cat litter."

Amen.

At the risk of being lynched or perhaps simply whacked, I am finally coming out of the closet on this issue. I've often had trouble getting some of the online communities I see sprouting up. Never mind something as grandiose as a social network, I even have a hard time understanding the value of building e-mail lists or perhaps even web sites for products with such fleeting consumer connections as salad kits or gum.

Having said that, what is worthy of being social-networked? On a related note, has everyone gone stark raving mad trying to social network just about everything within reach?

According to several websites, the social networking hub Facebook could possibly be shut down due to fraud allegations.

A rival networking site, ConnectU, is alleging that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, having been hired by ConnectU, stole ideas and code from their site after stalling on plans to complete it.

ConnectU is claiming copyright infringement, fraud and misappropriation of trade secrets. (Source)

This is potentially devastating for the social networking giant, whose members total in the millions. I'm sure, however, that MySpace is excited and hopeful that Facebook will fall.

I’m not sure if it’s because I’m getting older or wiser, but I find that more and more of my time these days is spent putting things into perspective and making decisions about what is important to me. I started out this year telling myself that I would only spend time doing things that were ’soul-stirring’ for me. So far I think I’m doing a decent job of that, but I have to stop occasionally and reevaluate where I am. I know that I’m the kind of person that can get very wrapped up in things. I’m really eager to participate and join new communities and make a difference. I’m also the kind of person that has had trouble saying ‘no’ to things in the past.

I’m doing better with it though, and starting to make decisions based on how valuable my time is to me, and how much of an impact I think I can have on things I’m doing and.. here’s the big one - how IMPORTANT is this to me in the whole scheme of things.

I read an older post today on 43 Folders and the very last item on the list helped, once again, to bring things into perspective:
Get pickier - You are the sole person in your life who gets to decide where your time and attention can go. Take that responsibility seriously by not wasting time on junk. You know in your heart what’s really important to you — does the current direction of your time and attention reflect that? Is “kid hugging” time where it should be in proportion to “Blackberry checking” time? Be mindful at the highest level about where you focus your energy, and always strive not to squander it on undeserving activities.

And there it is. Perspective. For me though, it’s not that activities are ‘undeserving’ - not at all, in fact. Most of the things I’m saying “no” to these days are very deserving and are things that I’d probably enjoy doing - *IF* I had unlimited time - but I don’t.

Social media and social networking are powerful amazing things. I thank my lucky stars every single day to be part of such wonderful online communities. That being said, if I let myself get completely wrapped up in every single community, every single event, every single committee, every single meeting.. I have no time for me. I need time for me. I’m better for everything else, when I take care of “me” first.

I was alerted today to this blog post from ReadWriteWeb on social networking. The blog post cites

I was alerted today to this blog post from ReadWriteWeb on social networking. The blog post cites some media commentary on a study that says that social networking is a waste of money. The report is based on a survey of over 100 US businesses. Despite spending millions of dollars, the companies could see little tangible benefit from their investments. Much of the disappointment reflected the fact that the numbers of community members weren't into the tens of thousands, a metric I am not really supportive of to define success for online communities.

Without seeing the complete study, I am not aware of the specifics of the report and its conclusions. However, what I can comment on is that social networking is not about technology - it's about people. If a corporation wants to spend $1 million on social networks without understanding what social networking is about, and how and why people should be engaged, then it will simply fail. It should come as no surprise that developing online communities without focusing on the people is a recipe for disappointment.

I am often perplexed that companies still don't understand social networks and communities. Is it because company management employ "workers" rather than "human beings"? Does management not see that social interaction happens all around them and that much of what is work today in the West is knowledge work based on working with other people? Is the social connection not clear here?

Companies really need to understand what they are trying to achieve and how social networking will work before embarking on costly high-tech investments. These days you can have a social network pretty much at no cost. Have a look at what you can do on Facebook or Ning, for example. There are of course more sophisticated solutions if that's what is required by the people in the online community. I am not convinced such high-tech costly solutions are always necessary.

The ReadWriteWeb blog post also identified that technology was not the answer but added that developing a social network around a product -especially cat litter - might not be the best approach.

In terms of product communities, I am not so dismissive. I believe that it is possible to successfully run online communities around products - perhaps not all products! However, the challenge here is in making engagement with people in the online communities authentic, and not just another vehicle for digital junk advertising and marketing-speak. Phony communities promoting particular products are even worse!

There must be some thinking around why people would want to be involved in your product community and how the company will engage and interact with that community. Above all, what is the purpose of the social networking interaction for the consumer, how will the company respond, and how will the consumers in the online community and the company benefit?

Dell has an online community. IdeaStorm is part of that community. IdeaStorm allows consumers to interact with the Dell company, offer suggestions and feedback, give opinions and value ratings, and generally provide a communication channel into the company. It's even possible to get real-time interaction these days using Twitter!

Dell has recognised the importance of engaging with people on the web. As Lionel Menchaca from Dell said in a podcast from the SXSW Interactive Conference 2008, conversations about Dell products are happening on the web and in the blogosphere anyway so it is important for companies to be involved in the conversation. Establishing a community forum is a good way of doing that.

Participating and listening to the conversation is where there is enormous value for companies. Social networking plays a positive role in engaging with consumers and using the power of the network to generate and stimulate ideas and discussion.

It really is the people who count.

A new star is on Linkedin. After all the political (Obama, Clinton and others) now it's Yao Ming.....but this time it's to promote his foundation, and to raise money.
Yao Ming "asked" a question on Linkedin some days ago, he already received more than 200 answers. When you visit his profile on Linkedin, you can see there is a contest to win a trip to China for the Olympic Games. Of course, for that you have to enter a raffle: "Enter the "Yao Ming Foundation 2008 Beijing Olympics Raffle" and help Yao Ming in his efforts to rebuild schools and provide other assistance to the children devastated by the earthquake in China." 2$ per ticket.

Linkedin is starting to be more than a social network, it has become an advertising company too.

By the way, Yao Ming is not currently open to receiving Introductions

For the time being, if you want to ~social network~ me, you'll have to stick with this blog (or any of the 800 others) or Facebook or IM or something like that. Okay? Can we all agree that this is for the best?

These are difficult times for the adult industy. The slowing down of the economy, the ever changing Internet and changing surfer.

The vast majority of Internet users are not on high profile, super fast, modern machine. 14 to 15 percent of the visitors still have a dial-up modem.

Most surfers use very limited options and will only use what they feel comfortable with. The average surfer is not spending hours on Google exploring the virtual world. They are more likely to go to sites that their family, neighbors, co-workers or media tell them about.

The industry is overloaded with buzz words. "Social Networking", "blogs", "go mobile", "tubing", and "video blogging" are among the most popular.

MySpace has millions and millions of users and so has facebook. None of these millions are surfing the millions. The average networker only has from 25 to 50 "friends". Adult networks aren't any better either.

Most people don't read blogs. They look at the pretty pictures and clips but that's it. So what are we to do?

The key is "niche marketing". Know your user groups, local hang outs, and be one of them. If you have a fetish site, be a fetishist. Talk to them and integrate and as a result, become their trusted resource for information on whatever you are selling.

The only unique selling point for an adult site is you or the person you created. Then start to network.

It's hard work and labor intensive, but you get loyal returning customers.

I'm sure many people have an account on last.fm and know how good that site is. Today, I discover that the beta version is now the norm, making the site a lot more easy to use and enjoy. I made my account in July 2006 (old account from April) and it is very interesting to see how your personal interests in music morph over time. Last.fm also allows you to discover new music and even offers free downloads of some songs. A very interesting site just got better.

Guy Kawasaki asks the eternal question of business owners, entrepreneurs, and corporations when he says "What is your unfair advantage?" Simply put what makes you or your business so special that your competition can not or will not compete with you.

In the real estate niche, the majority of Realtors point to the same "differentiating factors" when attempting to create a perception of a unfair advantage. Some Realtors claim their experience and customer service are "unfair advantages" over their competition. Yet the fact remains that there are thousands of Realtors with great experience and superior customer service.

"Unfair Advantage #1: Writing"

Creating a writing platform within your business is a major "unfair advantage" when you consider the number of Realtors who do not consistently utilize this strategy. Separate yourself and your business by creating all of the following tools:

1. Blog- The most powerful writing tool for your "next generation" marketing campaign, lead generation, SEO tool, and exposure is the blog. Whether you like the idea or not, blogs are here to stay. First adopters will reap the search engine optimization benefits while those Realtors that refuse to blog will be left off line in world this online. Eventually you will immerse yourself in Web 2.0 "social networking" via Digg, Reddit, delicious, stumbleupon, twitter, facebook, LinkedIn, Plaxo, friendfeed, and other social bookmarking or sharing sites

2. Freelance Contributor- Hone your writing skills first by practicing on your blog. Then contact your local newspapers, trade association, affiliates, community groups, rotaries, Kiwanis Clubs, investment clubs, church groups, and any other local organizations and offer to do a guest column

3. Newsletter- Create a newsletter for delivery EVERY OTHER week (no more-no less). Ask for permission (permission marketing) to deliver your newsletter via email to your list (those who have opted in to be on your list of course)

Tone for your newsletter is simple-valuable free information on a continuous basis asking for NOTHING in return from your readers. Write short succinct articles (2-4 paragraphs) like Top 10 lists, how to guides, tips, or resource listings

Proof This Works

You need not go any further than the following list of blogger-Realtors/affiliates for the reasons why you should be creating a writing platform within your business. Most of these people have either written or stated that blogging (writing) has changed their life and their business in such positive and profound ways.

1. Brian Brady www.mortgageratesreport.com
