The summit takes place a day before a Kentucky judge is set to decide if the Commonwealth has the right to seize the domain names used to gamble and play poker by using a law that allows Kentucky to seize gambling devices. The Commonwealth is arguing that URLs should be considered gambling devices in this case.

And the best feature of them all is the brand new devil mini-games.

As a matter of fact, you’ll be playing this one as long as you love Slingo because when you find yourself getting tired with the Supreme Mode, you can always revisit Slingos past through the Classic Mode, or play through the infinite Daily Challenge, giving you such good reasons to turn this game on for about five minutes each day just to have a crack at the day’s latest dare.

Everyone's talking about, Slot Music.

At least, it finally hit the NZ Herald today . Beaten by downloads affecting retail store sales, major record companies inlcuindg  Sony BMG, Warner and EMI have decided to make their music more accessible by putting it on 1GB Micro SD Cards.

They plan to still put them into CD cases and say that with the extra space, they can include the liner, liner notes and other information. They will be DRM free and you can even play your music on your computer by using the Micro SD Card with a dongle. The music will be in MP3 format at 320kbps they say on the info site, which they say is very high quality music. Really?

The say that hundreds of millions of phones, Personal Computers and in the future lots of car entertainment sytsms will be able to listen to this music.

Well hello! Do you think we consumers are thick? Let's go back to the future and do a different thing in the same way and charge a premieum for convenience.

So here's the thing. Back in the day we had audio casettes and vinyl. Audio casettes were cheap because they weren't going to last long, especially on cheap walkman units that stretched the tape if they got dropped, got hot or for lots of other reasons. Vinyl was great, you got big liner art and photos, quite often big inserts with lyrics, interviews and more photos.

Then came the CD, which they said had far greater sound and extra space to put more information on. In the future, they said, they could include music videos, interviews, games, photos and much more. Of course we had to pay more for this amazing technology but it was going to be worth it. In many cases the quality was superior, even the nice ambience of the needle was no longer there.

But the extras? Well they are the exception rather than the rule. In most cases we got less liner information, because of the size. Inserts happened sometimes but not very often and the additional material? Sometimes there was a hidden track, that was fun. Occassionally someone would add a music video and a few like BB King, put out a CD ROM with interviews, games and lots more. I still have mine, it was cool. Of course I don't play it any more, but I felt I got my money's worth and was chuffed that an old timer like The King could do something so modern.

So here's my take on this. I have large quantities of CD's and DVD's pressed, not of my music unfortunately, but for car navigation. I also have large quantities of SD Cards duplicated, also for car navigation. Firstly, even at volume pricing SD Cards are much more expensive than CD's or DVD's.

Universal Music is going to release about 30 'Slots' to start with, from their eLabs Digital Music Unit. Sounds more like a test to me, but anyway, I do applaud them for trying new technology. I think it's a good idea to try new technology, given that CD's are losing ground rapidly to downloads.

Will they add extra information to the SD Cards? Maybe for some of those first 30, but then it wil be the same old story, new media for a premium price (for the convenience) and nothing more. If they had listened to people like me 10 years ago (Netguide wouldn't publish my opinion), they could have reinvented a format giving loads of extra value, far more than people could afford to download and created a whole new generation of fans and collectors. But no, they just wanted to increase cash flow and profit. After all, they knew far better than we consumers, what was good for us.

In my humble opinion, they created the monster we have today where people download and share music for free. And it is a monster friends, because what is happening is people are downloading music for free and the poor songwriters and performers are getting ripped off.  Sure there are big bands making truckloads of money for themselves and their promotors, but they are the minority. Most of the people in your favorite bands have to work a day job in order to be able to write and perform music at night. This might not be the case if they got fair remuneration for their work.

I ask you this. Do you work for free? Do you expect to go to work and build widgets or whatever you do and expect other people to reproduce them for peanuts and give them to your mates? Will you accept a 90% reduction in your income because people have found a way to clone your products? I didn't think so.

Anyway, after that minor digression, this is a storm in a slot. Sure they will make some of these. Then they will cry foul when people copy them (if they can be bothered). They will weep when these cards don't get sold, except on eBay, Craig's List or Trade Me after people have copied the music onto their computers and shared them with their mates.

I love new technology, but when I can go to iTunes and for a couple of dollars, buy the only song as a track that I like (because I am happy for the band to make some money from it), why would I buy a little SD Card that I will probably lose.

In my humble opinion, the music industry got this one wrong. Can they redeem it? Only if they figure a way to genuinely add value. They want to offer the music on iGB SD Cards. (Interesting that I struggle to even buy 1GB SD Cards anymore.) Why not do something smart and offer us real value. Do what you should have done years ago and you might find a couple of years of legs in this yet. Use 4GB cards. Load it with the music, the live performance video, the interviews, the music video, lyric sheets (the mechanical rights people can still get a share) and a personal spoken message from the band or artist. You could sell that for a premium and create collectors items that people will want to keep.

Of course when real broadband arrives, people are no longer going to buy music in hard copy. I'm sorry but they won't. Why would you. The other day I sat down in front of YouTube an had a great afternoon watching videos and listening to music of my favourite bands of the past and the present. All it cost me was a bit of internet access (and I do have ADSL 2 from Orcon so speed wasn't an issue.

I think the future will be:

New York, Paris, London, Munich, Nobody's talking about Slot Music.

It is just a short drive from Cecil County to the slots at Delaware Park or Dover Downs and recent news reports in the Post and News-Journal have documented all those Maryland slot-players spending their money across the state line.  Despite the dire warnings from the pulpit, no one has documented a spiraling suicide rate in the county from the gambling that is already going on.

    The question for Cecil County voters, a majority of whom have to commute to jobs outside the county since employment prospects are dim here, is why not bring some jobs home? The county has one of the lowest college degree rates in the state-- around 16 percent-- so hospitality jobs, with benefits as Penn National provides at its PA facilities, would be very welcome for a lot of folks. And for those who complain about rising property taxes, the county's share of revenues would go a long way toward stabilizing county revenues without putting all the burden on the backs of local taxpayers.

   Gee, pastors, your congregation might even have a few extra bucks to put in the collection plate on Sundays...

A new statewide poll by Gonzales Research & Marketing Strategies finds that support for slots has dropped five points this year, falling below the 50 percent line. Opposition to slots has increased five points.

The Gonzales survey of 833 likely voters showed 49 percent for slot machines and 43 percent against. That is a startling change since January, when 54 percent favored slots and 38 percent were against. The undecided vote was eight percent in both polls. With the margin closing, the undecided group is now large enough to decide the outcome.

Slot-machine opponents are making a strong case that the costs of slots in Maryland would far outweigh the benefits. As in other states that have voted on gambling, opposition is growing as voters consider the negative effects of highly addictive slot-machine gambling on individuals, communities, and families. More voters are deciding that slots are not worth the trouble or the cost.

The Gonzalez poll was conducted by telephone Aug. 29 through Sept. 5. Voters interviewed represent a cross-section of the population, and the sample was balanced to reflect Maryland demographics by gender, party, race, and region. The margin of error is no more than plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, according to Gonzalez Research.

The strongest opposition to slots is in the Washington suburbs, the poll indicates, and the strongest support for slots is in Western Maryland.

Maryland On My Mind has a few political hunches about the slots referendum:

• Support for slots will continue to fade as Election Day approaches, and opposition will strengthen as voters decide to err on the side of caution.
• Opponents of slots are more likely to turn out and vote than are gambling proponents.
• The undecided vote will break against slots.

unfortunately, that wasn't the case this past weekend. no partying for me!

so i flew down to vegas to help celebrate susan's 30th. as you may or may not know, vegas and i hate each other with a passion. but for susan, i endured the billion degree weather, the sea o' skanks and douchebags, the barely legals, and the fake tits. that's love.

but i didn't go to vegas for all of that. oh hell no. i went to hang with my girlfriends and just relax, so that made the trip super rad. we stayed in a suite at the venetian, ordered a shit ton of room service, lounged around in robes, ate like mofos, and just caught up. it was nice.

you know what was not-so-nice? taking an $18 one way cab ride out to buttfucknowhere to go to that vintage store ''the attic' and finding crazy ridiculous boutique prices on used clothes. not cool. i found a 50s dress for $399. i'm sorry, but that's some serious bullshit. 

you know what's not serious bullshit? um, the wynn buffet.

"With our nation experiencing one of the worst economic crunches in decades, Maryland's investment in our schools is endangered. Raising taxes is not the answer. Cutting education isn't either.

The November slots referendum gives us the opportunity to protect our children's future by assuring they get the education they need. As the Sun wrote earlier this month, 'The state's education budget would be the chief beneficiary of a slots-related windfall estimated at about $600 million a year.'"

I think this statement is deceptive at best. Slot machines are a tax. The people that drive to Charlestown, West Virginia and pull the nickel slots are working class folks who can't afford a European vacation, but they can dream of one in the gambling parlor. Slot machines are a tax on that probably unattainable dream. It irks me when people do not acknowledge that gambling is a tax on the poor. Studies conducted by groups on all sides of the political spectrum have found that legalized gambling is a de facto tax on the poorest citizens in a jurisdiction.

I believe that those that deny gambling disproportionately harms the poor are not having an honest debate about public policy. It is this type of cavalier attitude that leads to ludicrous ad campaigns like the Maryland Lottery's "Let Yourself Play" campaign for $20 scratch off tickets which clearly implies this theme: "you can't win if you don't play."

Yes, my Maryland government is telling me that I won't be a winner unless I go to the store and spend money I don't really have to buy a lottery ticket that gives me a minuscule chance of winning the grand prize. My Maryland government is implying I'm not a winner for choosing to do other things with my money. And my Maryland government is hoping to get me to pay more in (de facto) taxes by luring me into ridiculous dreams about things I cannot afford. As if the person who doesn't play the lottery but donates the $50 in extra cash they have at the end of each paycheck to the local food bank is a loser.

If this was a straight up moral issue, this referendum would be a very easy "no" vote for me. But the fact is that gambling exists in a gray area, and legalizing gambling is considerably more gray than I'd like it to be. Several years back, Baltimore City Police raided an underground poker game at a Baltimore club. They made 95 arrests. There was a public outcry over the harshness of the action, and the District Attorney's Office found a technicality which allowed the charges to be dropped.

But the fact remains: what was going on at that club was illegal. The players had no real protections--the game could've been rigged against them, but because it was an illegal game, they had no legal recourse. Should the management of an underground poker club and a patron gotten into a dispute over money, the court system (which cannot enforce illegal contracts) would not be able to resolve the dispute. This can lead to threats, assaults, and other crime which endangers the public and often negatively affects the lives of innocent by-standers. It's why gambling is illegal, though one could make the argument that such situations are a reason to legalize gambling. This argument observes the fact that people will gamble anyway, and theorizes that government should at least get a cut of the action. It also theorizes that legalizing gambling allows disputes to be resolved in a civil manner (read courts instead of back alleys).

The fragmented anti-slots coalition isn't seriously debating issues like the ones outlined above, which tend to favor pro-slots interests. I think the NSA runs an analysis on prospective employees before they are given "top secret" clearance, and I think an individual who has access to such sensitive information has their behavior closely monitored. Besides, let's suppose that an intelligence official racked up a huge gambling debt to a state-owned Casino. What, is the Governor going to commit treason and sell national secrets to a foreign entity in order to balance the state's budget?

Marylanders United Against Slots makes far more rational arguments. They argue that slots wouldn't solve the budget crisis in Maryland. They also argue that slots would bring more social problems, and that they would end up costing the State more in treatment programs, prison terms, etc, for problem gamblers. Those are valid arguments. Jackpot Nation by Richard Hoff makes it clear that two percent of the population will become problem gamblers. If gambling is legalized, these people will commit petty (and sometimes violent) crimes to feed their gambling addiction. In his book, Hoff tells a heartbreaking story of a gambling addiction fed by a predatory "legal" business in Connecticut, and a subsequent jail term for the addict.

The debate that Marylanders should be having is about what kind of future we want in our state. What programs do we believe to be vital. Do we think we need to pay our teachers more? Should we spend more on cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay and protecting our public lands and parks in the Western Mountains? Should the state invest in alternative energies? Should we spend more to ensure that every Maryland has access to health insurance and decent, compassionate medical care? Should we keep the cost of a college education in Maryland low enough to allow all citizens, regardless of their family's income, the opportunity of a higher education? And if we should do these things, how are we to pay for them?

Maryland's notoriously flat tax structure favors the wealthy. Increases in the sales tax disproportionately harm the poor. Governor Martin O'Malley's original plan to solve the state's budget crisis included significant changes to the income tax system and a luxury goods tax that would've asked the wealthy to pay a little bit more for a better Maryland. But the fact that Maryland allows local governments to charge their own income taxes caused Democrats in the Montgomery County Delegation to be fearful of population losses to Virginia and the District of Columbia. The result was a watered-down reform plan, which placed a heavy emphasis on slots as the panacea to Maryland's on-going budget problems.

In this environment, we have to ask ourselves whether slots are an adequate means to get where we want to go as a state.
