Eis:

Lustre o sapato; ilustre a cabeça.

One is a makeshift casino, the other a $450 million gambling center with 4,200 slot machines, seven restaurants and a 26-story hotel.

Both were plopped down on sovereign territory in struggling cities using the same federal guidelines.

So if a U. S. district judge ruled last week that the Seneca Nation of Indians cannot use its footprint in Buffalo for gambling, what about Niagara Falls?

“The illegality is the same, but an illegal act isn’t a problem unless someone challenges it. Right now, no one’s challenging it,” said Joel S. Rose, who spearheaded the court victory in Buffalo. “If people in Niagara County who don’t want a casino see what’s happening in Buffalo, who’s to say what could happen?”

It’s too early to tell whether last week’s federal court ruling will put an end to the Seneca plan for a $333 million casino complex in Buffalo, but those involved in the case highly doubt the decision will bring gambling to a halt in Niagara Falls.

[Thus it seems odd that we often read of patriots and patriotism, but seldom see mat riots and matriotism — they ought to be pretty much the same thing. On the other hand, if we’re trying to avoid sexism, matriot is no improvement on patriot.]

When I see these ruminations, plucked from the GOAT’S hinterlands, I am immediately plunged back into some of the philosophical swing stage discussions in which I, and my coworkers engaged. Life isn’t always fair; versus, if it’s not right, fix it.

What then, to make of the fact that the 160th anniversary of the Seneca Falls convention passed with relatively little fanfare? (If you need a refresher check this, and this out.)

In a web search yesterday of “seneca falls” 160 anniversary, I found just 4,130 results. This is a sad commentary when, “hillary sleaze” will get you 3,650, and “hillary liar”, will get you another 3,690 hits.

10 years ago Hillary Clinton, as First Lady, gave a speech commemorating the 150th anniversary. So you see, the gravitas of Senator Clinton is now synonymous with the date.

It makes perfect sense that Senator Obama chose this week to fly away on his much anticipated but delayed international trip. How lovely it would have been to overwrite history at the Brandenburg Gate. Alas, the Germans wouldn’t allow it.

Frederick Douglass would not be amused. He would have an idea on how to fix it.

Jerry, Frank and Tom Pierce were Senecas who lived, at least part of the time, in Irving, NY around

Jerry, Frank and Tom Pierce were Senecas who lived, at least part of the time, in Irving, NY around the turn of the last century and ran distance races, often in the U. S. In those days athletes often trained and competed under the auspices of athletic clubs. They were the younger brothers of Bemus and Hawley Pierce, the famous Carlisle Indian School football players. The boys also claimed to be grandsons of Deerfoot, aka Lewis Bennett, the world champion Seneca runner of the mid-19th century, who ran races in England while clothed in a wolfskin and feathered headband for effect. The Pierce brothers were affiliated with the Pastime Athletic Club out of Syracuse, New York. In 1901 Jerry Pierce led Pastime A C to the national AAU Junior Championship at a meet held in Buffalo by running his opponents off their feet in the five-mile run. The next day he was winded after the four-mile mark in the senior meet and did not win that race. On July 28 Jerry’s teammates carried him on their shoulders after he fought out a victory in the 3-mile run at the Metropolitan Association of the AAU meet which was also held in Buffalo. On Labor Day, he won the 3-mile run by 40 yards at the Knickerbocker Athletic Club meet held in Bayonne, NJ. Later that year he won the national cross country championship.

Jerry’s success continued in 1902. In late August, his younger brother, Frank, paced him in the Metropolitan Association meet held this time at Celtic Park. Jerry won easily, but Frank, exhausted from setting a fast pace in the 3-mile race, finished fourth. Jerry was suspended by the AAU in September for having accepted a suit of clothing for winning a race. He was soon reinstated but his appetite for racing was waning. His brothers’ weren’t though. Frank was improving and some observers thought Tom, the youngest, was the fastest of the lot. Commentators attributed their success to unorthodox training methods. The Pierce brothers reputedly got in shape by hunting moose and deer on their reservation in Canada.

In 1904 Frank qualified to run in the marathon at the Olympics to be held at the St. Louis World’s Fair that year. In the days before the race, he was listed as one of the favorites. On the day of the race, the temperature was in the 90s in the shade, of which there was none, the humidity was high and the race course ran along a dusty road over which race officials drove automobiles immediately ahead of the runners. The runners had nothing but dust to breathe. Frank was forced to drop out of the race before the 20-mile mark as were several others. Thomas Hicks, the eventual winner was given a concoction of strychnine and brandy by his trainer to give him the energy to finish the race.
Wissensbilanz

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="220" caption="Wissensbilanz"][/caption]

You can’t manage what you can’t measure“.

My brother told me that I should start a Blog. This talk all started because he was telling me about

My brother told me that I should start a Blog. This talk all started because he was telling me about his blog (I'll post the link later) and that I should get on the bandwagon and start a Blog for digital video content creators...video guys.

I guess since this is the first entry in my new Blog, I should tell you a bit about me...

My name is Joseph and I am a husband, a dad, a brother, an uncle, a godfather and a digital video producer. 4 years ago I made the jump from full time employee for "The Man" with an education in Digital Media Technical Production and an idea, to a full time "video guy". It wasn't easy and it was definitely scary, but it was strategized. I knew that as planned a move as it was, any entrepreneurial venture can fail for any number of reasons. Small business equipment failure and minimal funds to replace gear, low season or too much business without time management skills and a million other reasons. It was bold, but I had too clear of a vision and a plan, so we did it. Well I did it, but I say we because Lex (Alexiis...my wife), and I would both experience a roller coaster of low seasons and high season, new gear and broken equipment, canvasing for business and getting "that phone call". This occurred over the first couple of years, and still does in some regards. It's strengthening sometimes, to say the least.

I run a wedding video production company that includes me, a couple of really good videographers and my buddy's photo studio (I'll explain that last part another time). A Day To Remember (herein known as ADTR) has been in operation for 7 years (first 5 years as Mista Media) and I'm doing well with this business. Weddings are a good core staple in my multi-stream income, which is what I think all successful entrepreneurs and business owners need to look for...multiple streams of income. Anyways, weddings are really cool. I love the food! I'll be doing some destination weddings next year! I'll keep you posted.

I also run a corporate video production company called JS Digital. I've got some good accounts with JS Digital, one in particular is Cara Operations...you know, Harvey's, Swiss Chalet. Milestones, Montana's and Kelsey's. This account has been great, as well I've got Club Intrawest and Blue Mountain as a new account to do some production with. I'm dealing with the Pita Pit and some other really big restaurants there as well as art gallery's and clothing stores. It's all pretty amazing.

Another one of my multiple streams is from teaching. I have been teaching at the post secondary level for the past 5 years. I teach in the field of communications, specifically digital video production and post production. I was teaching at Seneca College - York Campus and am now at the Toronto Media and Film College. Cool gig! I love teaching and the job is 5hrs a day, 2 days a week for 7 weeks at a time. they have even asked me to go to China to teach for 1 month...twice! The last time was just before the weekend. I'll keep you posted on that too.

I also have a 1-2 day a week part time job at Vistek. I really got this job out of selfishness...I wanted to be able to play with the cameras, get good rates on rentals and employee discounts. Why not?! It will help me to do what I love on a new level because of my access to equipment, I stay on the cutting edge, I get to teach and when I have a low period in my main business, I up my hours with Vistek. Again...it's a beautiful thing.

Now, I am not by any stretch of the mind the be-all-end-all with video, but I figured that it might be interesting to someone who wants to hear the good the bad and the ugly from a real nose to the grindstone video producer. I test cameras, I edit and shoot almost every day, I've made alot of videos, have some good accounts and made alot of mistakes along the way. So far, it's been really interesting.

I look forward to what every day has to offer because everyday is different than the one before. Happy planning, shooting, directing, producing, editing and delivering.

talk to you tomorow

Blue Cross Ohio Quotes Anthem Health insurance

The largest health insurer in Ohio is following the lead of Medicare and will stop paying hospitals for costs of certain preventable mistakes and infections.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield announced Wednesday that as of Oct. 1 it will no longer pay for errors such as surgeries performed on the wrong body part. The insurer listed 11 categories in which it won't cover extra costs of treatment, including pressure sores, urinary tract infections from catheters left in too long and hospital-acquired fractures.

Anthem's parent company, WellPoint Inc., initiated the change in Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans it operates in 14 states, said Kim Ashley, a spokeswoman for Anthem Blue Cross Ohio. Anthem covers about 1 million people in Northeast Ohio and more than 3 million statewide, not including those in Medicaid managed care plans, she said.

The policy follows the plan the government announced last year for Medicare.

Hospital infections alone are blamed for about 100,000 deaths a year in the United States, and $27 billion in costs, according to Consumers Union.

Tiffany Himmelreich of the Ohio Hospital Association said she was not sure if any other Ohio insurers had adopted the policy. Hospitals are concerned about "gray areas" -- conditions that in some cases may not be preventable, she said.

"There is still a lot up for debate," Himmelreich said. "How do we pay or not pay for something when it's not crystal clear what type of event it is. Is it preventable or not."

Hospitals are not allowed to bill patients for costs Anthem declines to pay under the policy, Ashley said.

Cleveland – The report card from The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has been issued and Medical Mutual of Ohio’s commercial products have passed with flying colors.

In recognizing Medical Mutual’s commitment to provide quality healthcare to its members and noting improvements to the company’s business structure, NCQA awarded Medical Mutual the Accreditation Status of Excellent – the highest level achievable.

Medical Mutual products included in the Excellent Accreditation Status are Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans SuperMed Plus® and Ohio Med™. Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans HMO Health Ohio® and SuperMed HMO® and Point-of-Service (POS) Plans SuperMed Select® and SuperMed Preferred.

In addition, Medical Mutual’s Medicare Advantage products were reviewed by NCQA and were awarded Commendable Status.

NCQA is an independent, non-profit organization that assesses and reports on the quality of the nation’s managed care plans.

“Our accreditation achievement is important because health plans earning NCQA accreditation tend to substantially outperform non-accredited health plans across a wide range of measures of clinical quality and member satisfaction,” said Paula Sauer, Medical Mutual’s vice president of Care Management.

“This good news means Medical Mutual’s HMO and POS plans have maintained their Excellent Accreditation Status under the Managed Care Organization (MCO) accreditation review,” said Sauer. “It also indicates Medical Mutual’s PPO plans received Excellent Accreditation Status the first time they were evaluated under MCO accreditation review.”

The Excellent Accreditation Status was awarded after rigorous evaluation by NCQA of all aspects of Medical Mutual’s plans, including preventive health services, member satisfaction, physician credentialing and quality improvement.

The review included both on and off-site evaluations conducted by a team of physicians and managed care experts. A national oversight committee of physicians then analyzed the team’s findings and assigned Medical Mutual’s Excellent Status based on the Company’s performance compared to NCQA standards.

Founded in 1934, Medical Mutual of Ohio is the oldest and largest health insurance company based in Ohio. The company serves its customers through high-quality, affordable group and personal health insurance plans, and third-party administrative services to self-insured group customers.
