I'll admit I've been spoiled by the Broadway cast recording and DVD. We saw the show originally on PBS in Alabama in the early 90s and we finally broke down and bought it on DVD a couple of years ago. The kids had watched it with us then, but hadn't been too excited about it. DD has discovered musicals: High School Musical, Camp Rock, you'd expect those of a tween, right? But would you think of Sweeney Todd, Rocky Horror, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Musical episode, and now Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog? She likes dark stuff and loves horror movies. We keep teasing her she's going to "go Goth on us" in a couple years. I don't really think so.

Anyway, she really enjoyed last night. She wanted THAT performance on DVD too. See there's another tradition at the Starlight, besides the little red box that's appeared in every production since >>>, that's the "freeze action" when the planes come in for a landing at Lindbergh Field. Yep, the nice little outdoor theater is RIGHT under the flight path. The actors "are specially trained" to freeze when a plane comes over and then continue on once the noise levels allow. This is controlled by the conductor, who apparently makes a game out of it, trying to catch the actors in awkard poses. Imagine trying to watch a movie, and having your 3 year old in control of a pause button. Luckily it turned out to be more amusing than annoying, but DS counted at least 28 planes go over in the 3 hours we were there. DH said there were more. We can say we did it and check off another requirement in his Webelos book.

Me? I'm going to watch the DVD as soon as possible. I've had the songs stuck in my head all last night and really need to hear the witch's song about the greens in her garden done properly. The wolf's "Hey, Little Girl" needs some refreshing too.

- Johns si è detto contentissimo di poter lavorare in sinergia con gli altri scrittori di Superman, portando così negli albi la stessa energia che si è apportata in questi anni su Green Lantern, riuscendo in questo modo a narrare un'unica grande storia. Anche Robinson ha sottolineato come sia importante rendere tutti gli albi di Superman, inclusa Supergirl, in un'unica famiglia coesa.

- Il nuovo evento per Superman sarà "New Krypton", in cui gli abitanti di Kandor faranno della Terra il loro nuovo mondo in cui vivere. Scatenando ovviamente un grande caos. Uno dei punti su cui la storia si focalizzerà sarà il fatto di rendere Superman "normale" e non certo unico con la presenza di tutti questi krytponiani.

- Jamal Igle si è detto entusiasta di poter lavorare su Supergirl insieme a Sterling Gates, che lo ha entusiasmato con il suo primo plot.

- Uno degli elementi nuovi che si vedrà nella serie è la giornalista Kat Grant, che userà i suoi articoli sul Planet per dare addosso alla ragazza d'acciaio. Il primo articolo di Cat infatti sarà: "Perché il mondo non ha bisogno di Supergirl". Cat insomma sarà una sorta di J.J. Jameson, e Lana Lang avrà il ruolo di amica di Supergirl.

- Oltre a New Krypton, ci saranno tante idee per gli anni a venire, infatti gli albi sono già pianificati fino al 2010.

- Tra le altre cose, si rivedranno in futuro sulle testate dell'azzurrone sia Superwoman che Capitan Atom. Comunque c'è voglia di approfondire tutti i personaggi dell'universo di Superman.

- Per il cross-over di "New Krypton" ritorneranno di nuovo i numeri nel triangolo, che contraddistinguevano gli albi di supes legati fra di loro negli anni '90.

- Per quanto riguarda Lois Lane, ci sono dei piani anche per la moglie di Superman, che avrà un ruolo importante in una delle prossime storyline dei super-book.

- Robinson ha detto di voler caratterizzare Jimmy Olsen come un ragazzo destinato a diventare il più grande giornalista di Metropolis, ma che ancora inciampa in qualche errore. Insomma un ragazzo alla ricerca di se stesso. Uno dei suoi obiettivi sarà quello di rendere Jimmy importante come Lois e Clark. Inoltre nelle storie ritroveremo alcuni supervillain di secondo piano dell'universo di Superman come Silver Banshee e Reactron.

- Anche Lex Luthor avrà un ruolo importante in New Krypton.

- Ci sarà uno Speciale Kingdom Come che sta preparando Alex Ross in cui saranno protagonisti il nostro Superman e quello di Kingdom Come.

- Su Legion of Three Worlds verrà approfondito il rapporto tra Superman e Superboy Prime.

- Rivedremo di nuovo Doomsday sulle pagine di Superman.

Our much anticipated day of adolescent frivolity began at 5 in the a.m., after a delightful four, I repeat, four hours of sleep.  You may ask, Why so little sleep?  I'd love to say there was a good reason, but it was due, mostly, to watching the slammin' dance moves of Optimus Prime courtesy of YouTube.  Sadly, we aren't kidding.  Here is the proof:

Yeah, it doesn't take much to amuse us, but if you've read this blog before, you know that already.

Anyway, we got up, got ready and were on the road just after 6 a.m., making the two hour trek to San Diego.  Or, what should have been a two hour trek.

Unfortunately, due to a horrible accident (in which nobody was seriously injured), our trip lasted over six hours.  Mostly in bumper to bumper traffic.

As  such, we got a very late start at the Con, missed a few panels, and didn't get nearly as many pictures as we had hoped.  Nevertheless, we share with you what we did get today.  Please to enjoy:

Big Gundam fan? Had the chance to go the Comic-Con in San Diego and turned it down? Then you might regret not having gone because of this. It's the GFF RX-78-2 ver. Ka Clear Version which is exclusively released in Comic-Con San Diego 2008.

In 2006, we claimed that Carolina would be the Super Bowl champion with a win over Miami. Yeah, about that ... we were really off base. Last year, we improved ... somewhat. We called New England as being the AFC Champion, but that didn't take much guts. That Chicago pick in the NFC looked good at the time, but Rex Grossman proved to be a better quarterback on the bench than in the game.

So we look ahead to year No. 3 of our NFL predictions with this being the earliest edition of our failed prognostications. It should be an interesting season whether or not Brett Farve decides to play. You have the N.Y. Giants feeling as if they still have something to prove and Jason Taylor dancing his way to the Washington Redskins. No truth to the rumor that Dan Snyder promised Taylor a sequence  uniform  for home games.

Onward to our bold predictions of no reputation.

The San Francisco 49ers will be coach shopping at the end of the season. Mike Nolan will make it to the end of the season, but the addition of Mike Martz as offensive coordinator will prove to be a bust and the 49ers will be looking for yet another coach that can bring the team back to it's former glory. To do that, the 49ers will need new ownership...but that seems to be wishful thinking.

The N.Y. Giants will be happy to be rid of Jeremy Shockey, but will find defending the Super Bowl championship difficult.

San Diego may have its best shot of getting back to the Super Bowl this season. So long as Norv Turner doesn't mess things up.

AFC East - New England will continue to be the class of the division and will claim the division title once more. Tom Brady will make another run at league MVP.

AFC North - Pittsburgh has a chance, but it depends on how good Ben Roethlisberger looks during the early parts of the season. The Bengals ... no chance.

AFC South - This may be the most competitive division in all of football. The Colts will win, but the Titans, Jaguars and Texans will all compete for a playoff spot in my opinion. The Texans may be the odd team out, but will be vastly improved.

AFC West - There are the Chargers and then there is everyone else in this division. Oakland is hoping that Al Davis gives up day-to-day control soon ... very soon.

AFC Playoff Teams: Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Chargers, Titans, Jaguars.

Champion: San Diego

NFC East: This could be the most competitive division in the conference. Dallas has a new returning threat in Pacman Adam Jones. But how good will Jones be after spending a year away from football due to suspension that included time as co-holder of the TNA World Tag Team Championship with Ron "The Truth" Killings. Look for Dallas to win the division, the Redskins to be improved, and the Eagles one step closer to divorcing Donovan McNabb.

NFC North - The main question - what will Green Bay look like without Brett Farve? Good, but not good enough to win the division. This is the Vikings year to dominate the division. Detroit ... will be lucky to win four games.

NFC South - I feel for my friends in the south that will be forced to watch this division play out on FOX TV this fall. None of the teams in the division look that great and it could just be attrition that decides this champion. Tampa Bay has the "best" case. John Fox will be out by the end of January.

NFC West - Another yawn division, though the Cardinals and Rams could make it interesting for the Seahawks, which should win the division. Again, no playoff berth for Nolan and the 49ers and Nolan is looking for a new job.

NFC Playoff teams: Dallas, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Seattle, New York, Green Bay

NFC Champion: Dallas

Super Bowl: San Diego v. Dallas. San Diego wins 34-28.

This:  There was an excellent piece last week (by KPBS' always excellent radio journalist, Alison St John, on proposed redevelopment of the bay front south of the convention center.  The link to the podcast is here.  The story underscores the central issue of what has driven much of local development policy in recent years:  sacrificing the long-term security of middle income jobs to gain increased tax revenues from real estate development.  Case in point, the desire of some in and out of government to eliminate, move or modify cargo operations the Tenth Avenue pier to make room for expansion of the convention center, more hotels and restaurants and, maybe even (fingers crossed, Spanos family?) room for another sports stadium on the bay.   The plan is to double deck the current port operations (cargo facilities down below, four star cuisine up above.)  Maybe it’s doable.  But, if they try and discover it really doesn’t work, push comes to shove, which jobs do you think are going to be shoved off the docks?  The middle income dock workers or the hotel profit-generating low income service workers?   Years ago someone paid to put somewhat obscure ads on municipal busses calling San Diego “The Last Plantation Economy.”  Seems they were correct, if a tad premature.

That: Jerry Sanders avoided a November ballot showdown with the City’s workers unions by striking a compromise deal.  Good news for Jerry who probably has less political capital to spend than he thinks following the June primary.  Yeah, he won but Susan Golding (you remember her?  Last mayor to actually serve two full terms?) went into her reelection campaign winning the primary with over 70% of the vote and with no real opposition.  Meanwhile the deal seems to benefit the mayor and city more than the workers, introducing a two-tiered pension plan for newbie workers v. the old guard.  Hey municipal employees unions, remember how well that worked for the grocery workers a few years back?  The city unions have fallen victim to the old ploy of divide and conquer.  Except they’ve divided and conquered themselves.

As many of you wise people know, today is July 24th and that means Comic-Con has started.  Not much has gone on so far but when anything I find interesting crops up at the Con I will post it here.  Well at least I'm going to have a busy weekend then, doing The Dark Knight review and following the Con.  You can find all news from the Con under the new Comic-Con category.

The invasion of San Diego has begun.  For the next four days, the city will be subjected to guys dressed like characters from Heman (see picture) and all other sorts of characters.  As I sit here in my condo, I can see the hordes of people headed to the convention center and it simply amazes me.  

For anyone who has never been in San Diego during Comic-Con, you might think that this is simply another convention.  Let me assure you, it's not.  The entire downtown area is invaded, hotels are booked solid throughout the city and all the way up the coast, parking (paid or otherwise) is nearly impossible, and every bar in downtown looks like it is hosting a halloween party every night.  When I called it an "invasion", I meant it in every sense of the word.

Personally, I'm not sure what amazes me more: the fact that there are this many adults still interested in comic books (and associated characters, movies, games, etc.) or the fact that so many of them are willing to spend their money, vacation days, and time to come to San Diego so that they can dress up and go to a convention about comic books.  I just don't get it.  Granted, I was never really into comic books growing up (more of a sports kid, myself), but I guess I just feel like one would naturally grow out of such things.  Then again, it doesn't take too many hard core fans to overwhelm a city.  

After the next four days are through, the crews at the convention center will clean it out and prepare one of the ballrooms for the bar exam, which starts on Tuesday morning.  It's getting close now, and I'm looking forward to it just being over with so I can go back to living a normal life (i.e. a life that doesn't involve analyzing preposterous hypotheticals about things like the admissibility of Dave and Peter's statement that they shouldn't have been on "Ludes and Snow" while they were driving...yeah, I'm not joking...that was a real question).
