Hey everybody,

Wordpress updated their software and have now rolled the update out to everybody who uses wordpress.com. One of the nicest things about the new update is that it works with Safari 3.1! Previously, I could use Safari to post but it didn't work very well. For instance, line breaks would not work. No matter how many times I pressed return the line would keep on flowing without so much as entering a space.

This occurs when an authorize application allows another non-related or unauthorized application to pass through or get into user's system."

Couple of weeks ago while I was working in my infect machine, I got this alert message from Apple Software Update. I was a little bit busy so I just minimize the window. Last monday, I had the chance to check and read what it says. Surprisingly, I found Safari 3.1 in the list which I know I haven't installed any of its version. So, what's happening here ?

As shown in the figure above, the QuickTime program I installed checks for updates. Then, the server replied with the update information. However, it doesn't end there, the server exploited the communication to perform an unauthorized task, which is to offer Safari 3.1 installer.

This is completely unacceptable behavior and a breach to information security.

[UPDATE: panic over. Let's just call it user error/stupidity and assume that they won't be naming a bug after me.]

I'm currently developing a site that uses a very common technique of tiling a background image on the body tag in css.

I tested the site in Safari 3.1 for Windows and the image would not display. It works fine in all other browsers.

I then moved the css for the background image into a div tag that wraps the entire site and hey presto it works as expected. I didn't give it much more though until just now.

I've just been to look at Adobe's new Photoshop Express website in Safari 3.1 for windows and they have exactly the same problem. Nice to know I'm in good company!

They are using the same technique e.g.

body {

background-image:url(assets/landing/background.jpg);

background-repeat:repeat;

}

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I can't show you my site as it's still in development, but the Photoshop Express site is here www.photoshop.com/express/landing.html

I love my Mac. I really do. I loved my MacBook and now I love my Macbook Pro. I prefer OSX to

I love my Mac. I really do. I loved my MacBook and now I love my Macbook Pro. I prefer OSX to XP or the various Linux flavours I have tried and I like the iLife suite. I kept my blog using iWeb for awhile and most of the feedback I got when I switched to WordPress was that folks liked the iWeb one better in terms of looks. So I guess I am a fanboy. So, when Safari 3.1 came out and people said it was fast, I downloaded it right away and moved all my bookmarks over from Firefox 3. Safari would be the perfect browser. Sleek, clean, fast, with all the features I could need.

After only a few days I returned to Firefox. Here's why:

1. Multi-tabbed Home:

In Firefox I have my three favorite starting places set as my Home pages. Call me greedy, but I open these three sites every time I get on the web, so I might as well have my browser open them right away, no? Safari wouldn't let me. At least I couldn't figure out how.

2. RSS subscription handling:

When I find a new site I want to subscribe to, I want to add it to my iGoogle page. It's my main home page and I like to see all my RSS feeds on that page. A great new feature of Safari 3.1 is the way it handles RSS feeds right in Safari, but I want to have a choice as to where I read my feeds. Safari doesn't ask me. This reminds me of why I switched from using iWeb to WordPress. Control. Steve Jobs makes things nice and easy for folks, but he is a bit of a control freak. This is not news to anyone I am sure, but I do get frustrated when I grow beyond the nice and easy ilife stuff and go looking for where I can save my iWeb as HTML and its just not there. Or when I want to set Safari to let me add my RSS subscriptions to my iGoogle page and it just does what it wants. Firefox asks me nicely if I want to add a new feed to iGoogle or Google Reader. Thanks Firefox.

3. Downloads Button:

Finally, (and this is a little thing but I use it a lot) there's the "Downloads" button on my Firefox toolbar.

I like this button. I missed it in Safari. I download things a lot. Maybe I am funny that way. But I like to check on their progress and I like having this little button right up there where I can get to it without having to go to the Window menu and choose Downloads. Too many clicks, that. So I tried adding a button like that to my Safari toolbar. No can do.

I have not mentioned plug-ins (Firefox has them and Safari doesn't) or GreaseMonkey scripts (ditto) because I don't use them. But It is nice to know that I can, if I want, seek out a new feature and install it in Firefox.

For me, these things, while not terribly important, are enough to make me use Firefox 3 over Safari 3.1. They are small things, but they are important to me. If anyone can tell me in the comments how to set Safari to open several tabs when it launches or add a new tolbar button for the Downloads window I guess I might give Safari another try. Otherwise, I might as well use the one that does what I want. Right? Sorry Steve.

So I downloaded it to test it out.I cant really see the difference since I use firefox there wasn't much diffrence in speed. On some websites it was faster but on some there would be a pause for a bit , but thats it . Its got a nice, clean and easy looking interface. It all show got this feature called snap back where you can go back to the begging of the web page where you started or the search . It all show got a auto fill...ect . Nothing really special about it though.

¡Ah! Y, al fin, en español.

Not because I hate Safari, but when it comes to blog posting in Wordpress, it sucks.And then yesterday the Apple have upgraded their safari to version 3.1, now I'm trying to use safari to blog posting, and will see the outcome as soon as I finished writing this. Thumbnail above is how the posting should appear in my blog, I'll update you guys how it appear actually in my blog.Update: This is what actually what's coming out

I’m glad to spread the word that Apple Inc. announced this morning that Safari 3.1 is ready to

I'm glad to spread the word that Apple Inc. announced this morning that Safari 3.1 is ready to download at its main web site.

According to Apple's staff, Safari 3.1 is the world’s fastest web browser for Mac and Windows PCs. In addition to loading web pages 1.9 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2, Safari 3.1 runs JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers.

It's to be noted that several tests have been made comparing the performance speed of Firefox 3 Beta 4 with other well known web browsers, and every time it came in first. The specific test was Apple's SunSpider JavaScript and these were the results of the first three places:

Firefox 3 Beta 4: 6,972.2 ms

Safari 3.1: 7,411.8 ms

Opera 9.5.9807 Beta: 10,824.0

As you can clearly see, Firefox 3 is still the "king of the hill" regarding speed and a lot of other features as well.

Available for free download for Mac OS X and Windows, Safari 3.1 is also the browser to support the latest innovative web standards needed to deliver the next generation of highly interactive Web 2.0 experiences.

Boo.

*turns off the visual rich editor... AGAIN* Seriously ... dude ... hand-coding html is so ... like ... 90's.

Post Script - The conspiracy nut in me wonders if they don't fix this on purpose because, as Mac users, we're "supposed" to be using their iLife application for blogging....

UPDATE:
WordPress' new dashboard uses TinyMCE 3.0 and seems to have fixed everything. Yay!

So Apple just released Safari 3.1 today. I just downloaded it from apple.com/safari. First impress

So Apple just released Safari 3.1 today. I just downloaded it from apple.com/safari. First impression...everything looks the same but God damn it's fast. I still like the look of Firefox better but Apple says its 1.7 times faster than Firefox and yes I believe it. I still use Firefox mainly for things like blog posting and website stuff but I'm writing this post in Safari just to test it out to see if there is any difference. You can actually see the "upload" "Choose file" button now for pictures...it's about time.

Trying to use the "code" button funks everything up. It takes out all formatting so Safari is still basically useless on Wordpress. Actually I just had to copy and past this over to firefox because it even dis-formats your post when you try to publish.

I think I'll have to download it onto the Dell as well. Internet explorer is so freaking slow on that piece of crap it drives me insane. It could also be that its two years old and it's used up like an old prostitute. When you download the Safari beta it says there is an "auto find" which I can't seem to find. In firefox you can set the preferences to find something on a page by just type and it'll find it. That feature is awesome because you don't have to hit command F to get the "Find" box up.But so far I love the speed, but other than that I really can't find much difference.

Anyways this is all great news today with Apple. Considering I dropped $50,000 into Apple yesterday (see previous post) I ended up making almost a thousand for the day and today I visited Mac Rumors and there was some more really good news. They are reporting that Apple's PC marketshare is up 14% for February....YEAH. Notebooks up 64% and Laptops up 55% year over year. Apple continues to grow baby. I'm kind of curious to see how the stock reacts today.

**** UPDATE Update: 19 March 08 Safari 3.1 for Windows is out of Beta and available from www.apple.c

**** UPDATE Update: 19 March 08 Safari 3.1 for Windows is out of Beta and available from www.apple.com/safari ****

If you're using Safari 3 Beta on Windows XP it may develop a nasty habit of crashing as soon as it launches. This is certainly something that a lot of people experienced as soon as the Beta was released in June, but it seems to have resurfaced in later versions in December.

I experienced this with version 3.0.4. (3.523.12.9) just before going away for the holidays. I hadn't installed a new version of the browser, it just stopped working one day. So now I'm back from holidays I've had a chance to sort the problem out and noticed that other people seemed to be having the same problems around mid December.

The short answer is that you need to install Safari 3.0.5, but that's not available at the usual address of apple.com/safari which is still carrying version 3.0.4.

You can download it from the Apple developer website (registration required, but free).

You login, choose downloads and then in the menu on the right, choose Safari.There's been a lot of interest in this post so it seems that quite a few people are experiencing this problem. Let me know how you get on in the comments sections and if this new download has cleared up your problems. Also see the comments below about uninstalling and removing old content first.
