HCM CITY — Suicides, both attempted and completed, are on the rise in Viet Nam, and need to be add

HCM CITY — Suicides, both attempted and completed, are on the rise in Viet Nam, and need to be addressed, according to a study by the Trung Vuong Emergency Hospital in District 10 released last week.

Rates of suicide are increasing at an alarming rate across all age groups, said Dr Pham Anh Tuan of the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at Trung Vuong Hospital.

Between May 2007 and May 2008, 310 cases of attempted suicide were sent to Trung Vuong Hospital. Women accounted for 72 per cent of the cases, but were more unsuccessful in their attempts than men.

According to the study’s figures, someone is hospitalised for an attempted suicide every 28 hours in Viet Nam.

Most at risk are office workers, followed by students and farmers. Over 50 per cent of people who try to commit suicide are between 25-35 years old.

According to Tuan, 42 per cent of people trying to kill themselves completed their secondary education, and 30 per cent have a high- school diploma.

Forty-three per cent of patients admitted for attempted suicide complained of depression, loneliness, hatred, fear, stress, anxiety, physical pain, feelings of guilt or a desire for revenge, among others.

Causes ranged from family crises, academic pressures to conflicts with friends or lovers. Emotional distress and losses were behind 62 per cent of the cases, while monetary problems were responsible for 15 per cent.

Single people are more at risk for attempted suicide than their married counterparts, accounting for 53 per cent of the cases.

The vast majority, 98 per cent, of suicide cases choose methods that are extremely difficult to treat, such as overdosing on sleeping pills or ingesting pesticides. Less lethal methods include hanging and cutting blood vessels.

Before committing suicide, people often exhibit signs of behavioural disorders, or make their intentions more obvious, said Dr Trinh Tat Thang, director of the HCM City Psychiatric Hospital.

For example, a person with suicide ideation may give away cherished possessions or remark they "won’t be a problem much longer." Many withdraw from the company of their friends and from regular activities, neglecting their appearance, radically changing their eating and sleeping habits, or abusing drugs and alcohol.

Warning signs

Such actions can be viewed as both a warning sign to watch out for and an inability to adapt to stresses in their lives.

Because 93 per cent of cases choose their homes to commit suicide in, families can play a life-saving role by watching out for such signs.

According to Tuan, people with a history of attempted suicides are at a high risk for subsequent attempts and completion.

A 30-year-old woman tried to kill herself multiple times because she could not stand the frustrations and nervous breakdowns in her family anymore.

Doctors failed to save her on her third attempt after she ingested pesticides.

Suicides create intense feelings of grief and guilt among their family and friends who feel they could have prevented the death by loving and caring for the victim more.

Despite general patterns, each instance of suicide, whether carried through or not, has its own unique characteristics. When taken together, they reveal a wide range of motives, methods and effects.

On October 4, doctors at Trung Vuong Hospital treated a 26-year-old woman from Long An Province who was in critical condition after swallowing pesticides following an argument with her lover.

On April 13, a 31-year-old man from the same province was treated after drinking herbicides.

He tried to end his life because he felt no one, his own family included, cared for him and thought that people would feel sorrow and love him more after he died.

An 82-year-old woman also from Long An Province tried to kill herself twice because she feared her high blood pressure and diabetes would be a burden on her family.

She first tried to commit suicide by drinking gasoline. In her second attempt, she stabbed her own heart, and succeeded.

According to the World Health Organisation, 1 million people committed suicide worldwide in 2000. At that rate, a person attempts to take his or her own life every 40 seconds.

Tuan called on the Department of Health and relevant agencies, including the departments of Education and Sports, to address the growing problem.

Counseling centres and experienced counselors are lacking, yet there is the additional problem of a widespread reluctance to use those services in the first place.

Doctors in Viet Nam want to change the negative attitude towards seeking psychiatric help. If you feel despair, sharing your problems with others, including mental health professionals, could save your life. —

In 1984, Nola McConnan bought her house with the intention of doing something different.

“I purchased my house because it had a south-facing roof and was in a bungalow neighbourhood,” McConnan said. “I didn’t have to worry about shadows.”

This roof orientation suited McConnan’s plans.

“The (south-facing roof) is good because your house is automatically set up to face the sun.”

The purchase of her house was the first step to having a solar-powered home.

“I knew that solar power, the efficiency of the solar-voltaic cells was improving,” McConnan said. “I knew that eventually the cost of the units would come down so that I could actually afford to buy them.”

McConnan got her chance to buy a solar unit in June 2006 through the Riverdale Initiative for Solar Energy (RISE). Initiated by Ron McKay, RISE is a volunteer project designed to bring communities and the sustainable energy industry together. RISE inspired a number of other community projects in Ontario, bringing sustainable energy systems to a increasing number of homes. McKay, currently program co-ordinator of GoSolar Ontario (a branch of the Clean Air Foundation) explained one reason for the recent growth in interest.

“Climate change is in the headlines almost every day now,” McKay said. A number of issues are coming together, he continued. The issues of energy consumption, conservation and environmental impacts of climate change are bringing ideas of sustainable energies into the mainstream.

“If it’s sort of an underground current, it’s now bubbling to the surface,” McKay said. “(It) is seemingly space-age technology, but people are becoming aware that this isn’t distant stuff. These are applications that can be done now.”

The technology is simple. Silicon panels absorb sunlight, changing it into electricity known as photovoltaic (PV) energy. The electricity converts in to the same type of current in homes, and then transmits to the power grid. This power then feeds directly into the home’s overall electricity supply. McKay and a team of “solar boosters” have spread the information at Home Depots across Ontario, and on their website.

“People are becoming more aware, but they still want more information,” McKay said.

David Watts works as a Sustainable Energy consultant with Solera, the company that installed the solar panels for RISE. He notes that the interest of solar units in Toronto ranges over a wide demographic.

“We don’t have an average customer. Bank account and house size don’t matter,” Watts said. “We’ve installed units from Parkdale to Rosedale to the Annex; 800 sq ft bungalows to mansions.”

Nola McConnan lives in one of the bungalows where Solera installed a solar unit. A professional artist, she doesn’t have a lot of money, she said. Despite the expense of adding a $10,000 solar unit to her home, she feels the price is worth it.

“When you look at the cost of large renovation work, $10,000 for something that’s going to pay you is less than what people pay for the renovation of their kitchen or bathroom,” McConnan said.

The cost of installing a solar unit is a concern to people, but McKay feels the financial benefits outweigh the initial expense.

“You have financial incentives after installation,” McKay said. “You have a PST rebate which the government has extended for eligible sustainable energy systems, which can be solar, wind, or geothermal.”

Other incentives include net metering and the Ontario Power Authority’s Standard Offer Program.

“Net metering is where you, in a sense, credit yourself for the power that you generate. You theoretically bank your energy onto the grid,” McKay explained. “And then during the night time, or when you’re producing less energy you just draw that power back again.”

With the OPA (Ontario Power Authority)’s Standard Offer Program, homeowners enter into a contract with the OPA and earn money for the energy produced.

“Like a nuclear generator or coal fire plant, you’re house becomes a generator,” McKay said. “And like the nuclear plant or coal fire plant, the government pays you for the power you generate.”

Homeowners currently pay 12-15 cents for electricity off the grid, McKay said, and the government pays generators 42 cents. With approximately 1,000 kilowatt hours produced a year, homeowners could earn up to $420.

Financial bonuses are not the driving force for his customers, though, says David Watts of Solera.

“Despite the differences between our customers, they all have a similar mindset, or outlook,” Watts said. “They are all future-looking. They don’t attach value to the long-term financial investment, but to the future investment.”

My initial impression? It seems okay.

Collapse(Post-Amerika) - Sounds like classic Rise Against, even with their new guitarist. Seems like it's straight out of "The Sufferer and the Witness" This song is about the collapse of a nation, the subtitle gives it away. I agree with this song 100%, we are just waiting for our fall from grace. My favorite song on this album.

Long Forgotten Sons - Like I said before, straight from TS&TW. Nothing special about this. D: I can't understand it, maybe about Mexicans?

Re-Education (Through Labor) - I like this guy's voice better. I don't get this one either. I still think it's about Mexican laborers. D:<

The Dirt Whispered - A very personal song, seems less Rise Againsty now. I personally think the guy's voice is good for screaming and not so much as singing. The message is clear. Nothing lasts forever, hold onto things before they disappear.

Kotov Syndrome - Yeah, we will spin out of control. America is already collapsing. I don't think America will recover under either Obama or McCain.

From Heads Unworthy - This album is your guide to America, srsly. It's about love, and the imbalance of power. We will take what is rightfully ours, after the rich and wealthy's castles collapse.

The Strength To Go On - This song begins with an Orwellian feel. It's about everyone being the sum of massive lies.

Audience of One - Pop punk feel. D: Where the hell's our post-hardcore. ): It's about a guy and how there is no one blame but himself.

Entertainment - Yeah, we are all entertainment to the power. They don't give a fuck about us. D:< I'm starting to miss the old Rise Against.

Hero of War - Beautiful song, no doubt about the Iraq War. If you listen to the lyrics, its not actually about glorification of war. It's all a big fuck you to war. America mistreats the Iraqis. If you piss on someone and hit them, you become a "hero of war".

Savior - I definitely miss the old Rise. Stop with this lovey dovey pop punk bullshit, that's only for blink-182. D: It's more pleasant, and the chorus is all happy and shit.

Hairline Fracture - I think this song is about people trying to recover, but fall again, but there hopes are still high. They're not hardcore anymore.

Whereabouts Unknown - It's about people trying to find a person, they miss him, and try to reflect on memories of him.

Elective Amnesia (iTunes bonus)- I don't know how to interpret this song, but I don't like it. There's liek no meaning.

This album was okay, I don't like there new style. I preferred there old hardcore style. The guitar still sounds the same, even with the new guitarist. I give this album an 7/10. It wasn't that great in my opinion. Comment away people, I have been listening to Rise for a while, and i found nearly every one of their songs has multiples meanings and interpretations.

There are a lot of things not to like about the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man. It takes up a ton of space, it's noisy, and it requires its own special power adapter.

But if you're like me, none of that will matter to you, because it sounds like butter. In fact, it's a lot like butter. Take a piece of banana bread for example. Sure it tastes fine on its own, but spread on some land-o-lakes and heat it up for about 15 seconds and you've taken the taste to a whole new level (chocolate chips help too). Now, obviously butter doesn't work on everything and it can certainly be overused, but it adds a whole new dimension to food.

Ok I'll stop my over-extended food analogy. But to me, that's what analog delay in the form of the Memory Man does to my tone. I've been recording with it a lot in the past few days and I fall in love with it again every time.

For those who aren't familiar with it, it's an analog delay pedal that also has the option to add a little (or an insane amount) of chorus or vibrato to the delayed signal. The result is a warbly, chimey, warm atmosphere that lingers around the dry signal.

Since it has such a short delay time and you can't tap out the tempo in a live situation, I tend to use it as more of a modulated reverb than a conventional delay. To my ears the modulation on the signal also adds some sort of sweet top-end harmonic-like quality to the signal that's very distinctive.

Another cool thing is that either the chorus or vibrato can be adjusted so that you're only hearing the delayed signal and you can set it up to have just a straight pitch-vibrato sound with no delay. Sort of emulates the Boss VB-2 warble.

For those applications, my settings are typically like the ones below. That's how I tend to use the DMM but you can do just about anything in the analog delay realm.

Reverbish

Pitch Vibrato

For those interested, here are a few tunes that feature DMM sounds. This is mostly speculation but I have a pretty good idea.

- Derek Webb's "Nothing is Ever Enough" on the I See Things Upside Down record: This definitely sounds like the DMM. A Digitech Space Station also kicks in later in the song. (listen)
- Brooke Fraser's "Love is Waiting" on the Albertine record: Michael Chaves definitely uses it a lot, and it sounds to me like the main part for this song has it on there. (listen)
- Emerson Hart's "If You're Gonna Leave" on the Cigarettes & Gasoline Record: Listen for the 5-1-2 melody line in the chorus. (listen/watch)
- Robbie Seay Band's "Rise" on the Give Yourself Away record. Taylor Johnson said this was the main delay he used on this song and that he tends to use it a lot in the studio (listen).
- U2's "An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart" on the Boy record and pretty much any early U2. Before Edge had all his racks he used 2 DMMs. (listen/watch)

In Conclusion: If you play electric guitar and you could use a delay, you should go play one. It's a little pricey, but nothing else sounds like it...

Sorry to make a long post even longer, but here's a cool video of a kid using one:

Assalamualaikum & good day..

During last one month of this semester, i've been expected a few things would happen earlier. One of the things is i will face my most challenging period at the 4 last weeks. Just imagine 1 national level contest project, 1 external project (but luckily this one completed earlier), and other 1 final project for each subject and there are 6 subjects. But most of this project will complete within a few days. If only the days are only allocated for completing the projects. at this time, how to manage time, how to manage resource and how to manage human resource is also one big thing. But as usual, time constaint is always have the most challenging title. Well, while i'm in my effort to finish up all the projects, sometimes i wonder how did the people with alot of businesses like Donald Trump and other billionaires manage their business in the same time keep living and having their family life..the things i wish i knew..

Whatever happen, let's try to remind ourself how busy you are, there are people out there that more busy. And if you stress or pressure with what ever happen to you, there's always way to reduce it. It can be manage. But how to manage it?hmm..i don't really know..but if i've discover the way, i'll share. Life is all about sharing! Right? Until next time. Wallahu'allam.

Tonight on TV are two movies that one I like, and the other not so much. The first one is the third installment in the Terminator Series, "Terminator 3:Rise of the Machines". I loved this movie. Possibly one of my favorite movies ever, but then again, Terminator 4 could change that. It airs tonight on FX. The other movie on tonight is "Mean Girls". I don't know what it is, but I just don't like this movie. Its too long, too boring, and it is NOT realistic. You can catch it if you want on ABC Family tonight.

I don't know how many of you know the song - Swing life away, by Rise against. This has to be one of my favourite song's of all times. It's one of those songs that will always make you sad. I have loved this song for so many years, the lyrics are amazing as its simple and let's face it, describes my outlook perfectly. Swing life away. Then there's the sadness, the loss and the good memories. All rolled up into one. There was a time a few months ago when after a bottle of wine I was feeling emotional and listening to this song, I ended up calling the phillipines from a work mobile. Music can do that to me, it evokes those moments when you just need to chat to someone, just need to remember the good times. To make promises you wish you could keep but really, you never know.

It's times like now where I miss so many people, I can't listen to some thing's without wanting to get on a plane or a train. Do something stupid, just to hang - just to feel the freedom, the happiness, the excitement.

23. Tax Cuts for the Rich?

It gives a one-year reprieve, at a cost of $64 billion, to more than 20 million taxpayers who would get hit by the AMT, which is supposed to only affect the very rich. The bill also gives tax breaks to natural disaster victims and ensures mental health parity in health insurance benefits.

Effort to replace building with mosque injures 10 Christians, ruins structure.
GARISSA, Kenya, Septe

Effort to replace building with mosque injures 10 Christians, ruins structure.

GARISSA, Kenya, September 29 (Compass Direct News) – A longstanding effort to replace a church with a mosque in Kenya’s northern town of Garissa culminated in an attack by 50 Muslim youths this month that left the worship building in ruins.

The gang stormed the building of Redeemed Gospel Church on Sept. 14 and pelted the congregation with stones, sending many Christians fleeing while others became embroiled in fistfights. Ten Christians received hospital treatment for minor injuries and were released.

Church leaders said the Muslim mob also destroyed pews, damaged the church building’s walls of corrugated iron, smashed the glass-mounted pulpit and burned the church banner with its stand.

“We had just started the Sunday service when, without warning, a rowdy group of about 50 Muslim youths invaded the church, pelting stones at us and destroying our structures,” said the church youth chairman, identified only as Suma.

Local media reported that the 10 church members were hospitalized, but a district nurse at the hospital told Compass that no one was admitted due to the violence. A church elder at East Africa Pentecostal Church in Garissa, about 400 kilometers (249 miles) from Nairobi, confirmed that the church members were treated at the hospital and allowed to go home.

Tensions between Christians and the Muslim-majority population in the semi-desert town of 20,000 people began simmering after Muslims built a mosque next to the church plot at No. 21 Windsor in June 2007. Purchasing its land on Nov. 1, 1999, the church had begun worshipping there by early 2001, eventually growing to 400 members.

Church leaders complained to the district commissioner in June 2007 that the new mosque was built too close to the church – only three meters separate the two structures – and that it was blocking the church entryway.

“Prior to that, the owner of that land had promised to use half of it and sell the other half to the church,” the church leaders reported to the district commissioner in June 2007. “But in 2007, she changed her mind and gave it to the sheikhs to build the mosque. We reported the matter to the DC’s office that it would not go well with the church.”

Officials had ruled that no further permanent structures were to be set up on the land by either party until a later date to be determined by the district commissioner.

“The church faithfully obeyed, but the Muslims defied the orders and began immediately to put up a permanent structure,” according to the letter church leaders wrote to the district commissioner. The building of the mosque was allegedly sponsored by M.K. Roble, a wealthy Muslim in Garissa, according to the letter.

“The problems between the church and the Muslims began and have escalated since then,” it states.

Government security intelligence had reported that Muslims planned to destroy the church if it continued to operate within the residential area, District Commissioner (DC) Alois Okango told Compass. The administration had proposed a new site for the church to worship, Jamhuri Club, but two days before the attack church leaders wrote two letters to Okango saying they would remain worshipping in their building.

“We would like to notify you that our church members have decided to have our Sunday service at our usual place on September 14 and not at the new site of Jamhuri Club,” they wrote in one of the letters, “because we have come to realize that the new site is only temporary, and we will only move out of our premise if we are guaranteed a permanent place of worship.”

Okango told Compass that to avert a crisis, the administration has decided that the church should relocate temporarily to a site near an agricultural showground. The government also advised the church to sell its property near the mosque and buy another piece of land, preferably outside Garissa town center.

This suggestion, Okango told Compass, did not augur well with church members, who felt they had already established the church at the site and that it was the mosque that should be moving.

“The Christians threatened to go and worship in the ruined premises if no action was taken,” Okango said. “They said they were ready to die for the sake of their faith.”

The government is striving to avert further incidents by preventing the Christians from returning to the ruined structure, according to a Provincial Police official identified only as Chelimo. With tensions expected to rise during the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, he said police were taking precautionary measures to ensure that the congregation never returned to their property.

“To allow this would be suicidal,” Chelimo told Compass. “We have deployed five security guards every day to make sure that the members of the church will not enter its structure.”

Elusive Justice

Wondering why those who attacked the church had not been arrested and charged in court, Redeemed Gospel Church pastor David Matolo said the government should punish the assailants.

“The church has the right to be protected by the government – allowing the minority Christians to suffer is quite wrong,” Pastor Matolo told Compass. “Why should the Muslims interfere with the church’s worship? I as their pastor cannot shy away when my members are ill-treated. We are ready to pay the price, but we want justice to be done.”

He said church leaders had agreed on an alternative site only to have the district commissioner suddenly revoke it.

“The DC had promised to locate us to the provincial residential area, and we had cleared the said site, only to be stopped without prior notice,” Pastor Matolo said. “Now we have no place to worship.”

A missionary from Tanzania who works in the area informed Compass that Muslims have distributed leaflets threatening to destroy all churches in Garissa. They have also threatened to burn Garissa’s open-air market operated by Christians from “down Kenya,” that is, non-Muslims, he said.

The missionary said the safety of the more than 2,000 Christians in Garissa is in jeopardy, and he appealed to the government to protect the right of worship of all people.

“It is quite unfair that the Redeemed Gospel Church has been displaced and is now praying under a tree in an open space with no amenities,” he said.

District Commissioner Okango said that the administration must protect Muslims from the noise of worship emanating from church at night that has disturbed residents, as well as prevent clashes. In both the mosque and church, loud speakers had been set up facing each other with confrontational messages blaring from each.

“The government is sensitive to the feelings of the people,” Okango said. “We cannot allow disorder to reign in North Eastern Province in the name of religious patriotism.”

Land issues alone have not been responsible for tensions in the area. The Rev. Ibrahim Kamwaro, chairman of the Pastors’ Fellowship in Garissa, said Pastor Matolo had offended Muslims when he preached to a lame Muslim man.

Muslims were said to be upset that the pastor persuaded the disabled man to stop going to the mosque and instead join his church. Pastor Matolo’s alleged promise to the disabled man of a better life offended area Muslims, Rev. Kamwaro said.

Muslims restrict churches in Garissa in various ways: Christians are not allowed conduct prayers, sing or use musical instruments in rented homes owned by Muslims. No teaching of Christian Religious Education in schools is allowed; only Islamic Religious Knowledge is taught.

Garissa has more than 15 Christian denominations, the main ones being the East Africa Pentecostal Church, the Redeemed Gospel Church, the Anglican Church, Deliverance Church, the Full Gospel Churches of Kenya, the Africa Inland Church and African Christian Churches and schools.

Report from Compass Direct News

This weekend I went home to see my family in Pittsburgh. It was great to see them. One thing I learn

This weekend I went home to see my family in Pittsburgh. It was great to see them. One thing I learned is that my sister who is a twin has her first serious boyfriend. His name is mike and he's pretty cute. My sister seemed pretty happy with him and I was happy she was happy. Early this morning before I left for the airport I went to her room to give her a goodbye kiss when she told me the same guy I met the night before who was so happy in in the best mood was in the hospital. His heart stopped. I told my sister I was really sorry to hear this and told her to keep me updated. I left for the airport arrived home to Chicago. While in my bedroom my mother calls me to tell me he passed away this morning. I was devastated. My 18 year old sisters' first serious boyfriend whom she loves so much died. I called my crying sister and tried to comfort her the best one could over the phone. She just cried and cried and cried. I gave her words of encouragement and told her I'd call later to check up on her.

Now this is where the title of this post comes in. Not even an hour later my mother calls me back to say in fact he did not die! I was elated yet very very angry my sister had to go through this. No one should ever.

My mom said that my sisters boyfriends mother was texting someone about another persons death and mentioned their body in the morgue. Unfortunately she sent the text to the wrong person; my little sister. Understandably my sister took this as a text telling her her beloved boyfriend has passed away.

I told my sister I'm so sorry she had to go through that. But it's great that in her heart the dead do rise.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Having faked information relating to the Shenzhou launch last week, the question some are asking is whether the first Chinese space walk is real. The Chinese reported on the successful launch and what was said between the astronauts before it had even occurred.

I would think that it probably is. The walk took place some 343 km over the earth.

Commander of the space mission, Zhai Zhigang, left the Shenzhou VII spacecraft at 4.43 pm Beijing time and floated in orbit for about 15 minutes. China became the third country to have an astronaut complete a spacewalk and continues China’s rise as a space and super power.

China now has an objective of building a space station. Two unmanned spacecraft and a manned mission to begin construction of the space station are to be launched by 2010.

The Shenzhou VII spacecraft was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China late Thursday.

The spacecraft is scheduled to return to earth at about 5.00 pm on Sunday Beijing time and is expected to land in the northern Inner Mongolia region.

The footage below shows the first Chinese space walk:
