Theodore Roosevelt advocated what he called “ the strenuous life”.  He understood that our time on earth is limited and that we should make the most of it.  Psalm 90:12 says, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”  Theodore Roosevelt believed that verse and stated, “Leaders are those who make the most of every moment, of every opportunity, and of every available resource.” 

Theodore certainly practiced what he preached.  He, both physically and mentally, was constantly busy.   When Theodore Roosevelt was a boy, he was sickly and weak.  However, through consistent hard work, he grew into a strong and energetic man.  Roosevelt climbed mountains, hunted, fished, and fought in the Spanish-American War.  He even had a boxing ring set up in the White House and invited prizefighters to box a few rounds with him!  Physically, Theodore Roosevelt lead a strenuous life.

Mentally, Roosevelt was no different.  He had a voracious appetite for learning.  Most weeks Theodore Roosevelt read at least five books, more if he was not too busy.  This reading payed off.  His son Archie testified, “In one afternoon, I have heard him speak to the foremost Bible student of the world, a prominent ornithologist, an Asian diplomat, and a French general, all of whom agreed that Father knew more about the subjects in which they had specialized than they did.”  His was indeed a strenuous life.

Beyond a doubt, Theodore Roosevelt was a manly man.  He, perhaps better than any other man, captures the essence of Christian manliness.  Starting life weaker than most, he ended life having accomplished much more than most.  His life is an enduring example for use to follow.  Rise up O men of God and lead a strenuous life!

And in 2008 it sometimes seems we have learned nothing.

We have become the arbiter of what is acceptable within the beds of consenting adults.  We have chosen to focus on a very small area:  whether people of the same sex are allowed to love each other.

Yes, you heard that right.  What we are talking about is ability of people to be allowed to FREELY EXPRESS LOVE TO ONE ANOTHER.

Let's repeat that:  FREEDOM TO LOVE.

Now I'm not patronizing you, I repeat this to drill it into my own head that it could actually be true that God loving heterosexual human beings think they have the right to determine the course of love for the rest of the world.  (Oh, did I mention?  I'm God Loving and a monogamous, loving heterosexual.  Aren't I lucky?  Arent' I special?  Guess God must have chosen me.)

The point is, educated, allegedly loving individuals, citizens of the most free of societies, or so they herald, are actually, yes, seriously, contemplating to amend the Florida constitution to tell people, to mandate, to enact into law a prohibition against love.

Yes, that is what we are talking about, prohibiting love.

No God I have ever believed in ever considered that a possibility, two rules, remember, the essence?  Love God and Love your neighbor.

Whew.  Sorry, I'm pretty upset.

I want to know where the exit door is from this Society gone mad.  No, I don't mean checking out, I mean escaping from the collective illusion.

I'll be right up-front about this - this is an appeal for $$$.  (No, not for me.)

I hope you know I wouldn't be asking if it wasn't important.  Please read on and I will explain why.

There is a poisonous amendment to the Florida Constitution on the ballot this November known as Amendment 2 - the so-called "Marriage Protection" Amendment.

Yes, they're at it again.  The right wing is using fear of gay people to try to win another election.  But they may have over reached this time.  They claim it's about "gay marriage" but Florida already has multiple laws banning same-sex marriage.  What they're really after is engraving discrimination into the Florida Constitution and the elimination of domestic partnership rights and benefits which are offered by several counties (e.g. Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach), municipalities and employers (think Disney) here in Florida.

The good news is that to amend the Florida Constitution the proponents need a vote of 60% + 1 to win and we need 40% +1 to send it to the trash bin where it belongs.  Polls show both sides are within 2% of the magic number.  We have seen that once we explain the negative consequences to all Florida unmarried couples, especially seniors who would be forced to choose between sharing health care and receiving government benefits, our numbers go up.  The key to our victory will be in getting the word out to as many people as possible.  That's where you come in.

Florida Red and Blue, the group I have been working for since July, was formed solely to defeat this amendment.  As many of you know I have worked on a few campaigns in the past and I must say I am impressed with the sophistication of Florida Red and Blue.  We are using all the latest tools to fight this battle.  Included in our arsenal are TV ads which are already "in the can" and have been tested with focus groups with off-the-charts positive results.  The reason the ads are so effective is they tell real stories of real people and how they would be affected if Amendment 2 passes.  The TV time has been booked and all that remains is the money to run the ads.  All our other expenses and overhead are covered from now until Nov. 4 so every dime we raise from now on will go directly to getting these ads on the air.

I was hoping that you would join me in praying for her as she is still waiting for the final results as to whether the cancer has spread or not.

She is a lovely, warm, generous, talented person. I would give everything I had if I knew it meant she would recover. Any thoughts or prayers you can send her way would be greatly appreciated.

There are mixed reports coming from the flood area in Bihar. Some reports say waters are falling and some say that water is spreading. Either way millions of people are affected. Some reports give the number of deaths attributed to the flood as quite low. Another gives the number at 2000. All reports are that the government response has been delayed and confused.

Friday night's free event at the Poet House Art came off famously. Twenty local artists came together to jam for over five hours; painting, drawing, scratching, and splashing their way through 40 feet of canvas. The creative juices flowed and the group worked hard. Images range from friendly trees to withered women to bicycles and flowing jugs.

I guess that maybe 500 people walked through the venue as part of downtown Art Walk and checked out the action while gulping down some wine.

Thank You artists for your hard work. Thank you volunteers and RIse Up for putting it up and taking it down. Thanks to the Poet House for providing the space. Some pieces of last years canvas were sold and some very generous folks (Anitia & Alex) made a really nice donation to Rise Up India. Far Out - you're awesome, and thank you so much.

12 MINORS RESCUED FROM TRAFFICKERS

KISHANGANJ, BIHAR, July 26, 2008: Close on the heels of the incident of 20 bonded child labourers being rescued from a train here on July 21, as many as 12 children, who were being trafficked, were rescued by the railway protection force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) forces at Kishanganj railway station on Thursday night.

One tout Asrar Ahmad was also arrested. Two of his accomplices, however, pulled the wool over the eyes of RPF and GRP personnel and slipped away, sources said.

The rescued children are in the age group of 6 to 10, except two, who are about 14 years, said RPF sources.

RPF sources said the small children were huddled together on platform no 2. They were awaiting the Jodhpur-bound Jodhpur-Guwahati Express to arrive so that they could board it. The train was, however, running behind schedule. Meanwhile, RPF Inspector S K Prasad, accompanied by some personnel, was walking on the platform at 8 pm when he spotted the group of boys huddled in a corner on the platform. As they began to quiz them, they shuffled.

A person posing to be their custodian, appeared claiming that the children were being taken to school. But on a little more probing, it became clear that the man was a tout and a trafficker.

The RPF and GRP personnel took him into custody. The rescued children including Kalam, Ishtehar, Arshad and Mohd Kalim disclosed that they hailed from villages in West Bengal.

It's a big 11 day party where each morning about 8 am a bunch of bulls are released into the streets of Pamplona and run up to the bull fighting arena. Where, well, it's a one way trip. And those mad Spaniards love it.

Singh is an economists and a Sikh. Sikhs don't cut their hair. They wind it up on their head and wrap a turban around it. Singh is viewed as being very weak and controlled by the Congress party which in turn is controlled by Sonia Gandi (Rajiv Gandi's widow).

De nuevo nos encontramos con una de las parejas de moda de los últimos tiempos, si os hablo de Yves Larock y de Jaba, que retoman el laureado Rise Up para añadirle algunos ritmos más moviditos.

La canción es practicamente la misma pero realizan un edit de la misma y le añaden ritmos de base bastante moviditos. La canción sigue sonando muy bien pero no dista mucho de la original quizas algo más de potencia en algunos momentos hubiese cambiado la cosa, de todas formas esta versión es algo más bailable y gozará de más éxito en las pistas.
