I was excited to see this website, which is a great site for sharing a ride to work. Check it out.

I just wrote a post about the first traffic light coming to Redmond in the 1960's. It's hard to believe that it was only 40 years ago that there was a need for the first traffic light. Things in Redmond have certainly changed over the last half century! With the amount of traffic, particularly around Microsoft, ride sharing is another option for commuting. Fortunately, for Redmond, Microsoft has a terrific commuter service. But there is still much that people in Redmond can do to improve traffic for all. Everyone has to pitch in to make changes with our traffic and use of energy.

Last night I stood within twenty feet of one of my heroes.

[caption id="attachment_58" align="aligncenter" width="468" caption="I LOVE YOU WILLIE!!!!!"][/caption]

It was epic. If you can get tickets to Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again" tour, buy them now. You will not regret it. I saw him with my family last night in Marymore Park in Redmond, Washington. The man is 75 years old, played for two hours straight, and sounded as good as he did in 1956. And he played most everything for at least a minute or so--only an obsessive fanatic like me would know a few songs he didn't play. On top of being a music and lyrical genius, Willie is a guitar god. Most people don't know that. Willie is the lead (and only) guitarist in Willie Nelson and Family. He solos in almost every song on this tour. His guitar is so ancient and beat up that it has two holes in it, instead of just one.

As impressive as the quality and length of last night's show were, I was even more impressed by how happy he made his audience. Willie Nelson has been an active musician for fifty years and people have appreciated him for thirty. Willie Nelson has been making people happy for thirty years! That's AMAZING! And he seems to thoroughly enjoy himself while he's at it. He spent a good ten minutes signing autographs at the end of his show last night. Anyone who had something for him to sign (and had bought the $70 seats--the most expensive seats offered) could bring their piece of memorabilia to the stage and he'd sign it. When people were out of things to sign he shook their hands. I didn't try for an autograph--I don't really understand the autograph thing. I wouldn't have said no to a handshake, though. Sigh.

In other news, I recorded three new songs at Randy Devitt's house on Wednesday. They are "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt, "Stay With You" by John Legend, and "Break Down Here" by Julie Roberts. I'm happiest with "I Can't Make You Love Me." My mom, Cindy Bain, accompanied me on all of them. My sister, Allison, joined us for "Break Down Here." You can let me know if you'd like to hear one or all of them by leaving a comment here.

In other other news, I am leaving for Portland on Sunday. I move into a house in Sellwood on Monday, and school starts on Tuesday. I've found some guitar teachers to call--one of them is even in Sellwood! I've also been exchanging e-mails with some musicians in need of vocals. Some of them are very promising! Craigslist.org is my best friend these days. I will keep you posted about the connections I make in my first few weeks of school.

Until soon,

The corner of Leary Way and Redmond Way got the first stop light in downtown Redmond in 1966. The map shows the downtown core which contains many of the historical buildings and shows this all important intersection. Hmm...I think a lot has changed since then. Could be that Microsoft factor.

The corner took on a new identity when the stop light was put in. The crossing was called "Walk and Don't Walk" after the light was installed.

This was the busiest intersection in 1966. What do you think is Redmond, Washington's busiest intersection today?

Computer software maker Microsoft Corp. announced today that it will start charging for e-mails flow

Computer software maker Microsoft Corp. announced today that it will start charging for e-mails flowing through its online services, a move that is certain to cause consumer backlash.

[caption id="attachment_982" align="alignright" width="320" caption="The Microsoft Compound in Redmond, Washington. Should Armageddon happen, there are enough supplies inside to ensure Bill Gates and his followers a comfortable lifestyle while they practice their new religion."][/caption]

The company had suggested before that charging for e-mails would be an effective way to fight junk messages known as "spam," but few in the technology business thought the company would actually do it.

"We understand that charging for e-mails won't be popular," Microsoft spokesman Jerry Riegel said at a Redmond, Washington press conference. "But we're not trying to win a popularity contest. We're Microsoft."

All e-mails flowing through its online services, such as its MSN network, will be charged 64 cents for safe passage, and either the e-mail sender's or recipient's credit card will be used to collect the "electronic postage," Riegel said.

"We've been accumulating consumer credit card numbers and e-mail addresses for quite some time now," he explained. "I think people can understand why now."

Riegel said that Windows Vista -- Microsoft's newest operating system -- will be utilized to help enforce the new electronic postage.

[caption id="attachment_984" align="alignleft" width="320" caption="An unknown error has occurred while loading this web page into your browser. Rebooting your computer several times may solve the problem, or it may just piss you off some more."][/caption]

"Vista's next service pack release will not allow e-mails into or out of a personal computer until a valid credit card number is supplied by the consumer," he said. "A popup box will appear every 30 seconds asking the consumer if he or she would like to enter a credit card number to activate the new electronic postage feature."

Microsoft founder Bill Gates joined the press conference at one point, and was asked if the same rate applied to e-mails with large attachments.

"The rate will be the same across the board," Gates said. "$0.640 dollars ought to be enough for any e-mail."

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="600" caption="Wait, you mean it isn't a prairie dog park?"][/caption]

The last time I was here dogsitting back in April, I put together a brief tour of the huge off-leash dog area over at Marymoor Park here in Redmond. As I said when I previously wrote about the dog park, having a huge place to allow the dogs to run around unleashed makes the job a lot easier, especially when you have high-maintenance dogs like Beagles to deal with. During the warm weather months, this place can be especially popular, although even on the dreariest of days (a couple of which seem to have shown up this week) you'll find the diehards and their canine companions out for their morning walk in spite of the weather.

As with many other things, the dog park tends to change with the seasons, and a few months can change quite a bit out here. To show some of these changes, I thought i'd take a few more photos and show some of the changes that come with the season. After the jump, a look at the dog park in late Summer.

The last time we were here, the grass in this area was relatively short, with a few patchy areas of taller grass scattered around the place. As you can see now, the grass has grown up quite a bit and gone to seed, although there is still a distinct layer of green to be found underneath, highlighted a bit more than usual by the recent rains.

This grass is tall enough that most of it is over Imola and Minardi's heads., giving them plenty of opportunity to "explore" the area.

Because of the height of the grass, the dogs have to "leap" through it in order to get around. Looks kind of fun, actually. Then again, I'm not a dog, and can rarely derive more than a couple of seconds of entertainment from sniffing things.

There are also some areas (such as this one, in the southeast corner of the dog area) where the grass doesn't grow up quite as tall. This field area is one of the more popular areas for playing fetch, although these two (Imola in particular) always tend to get transfixed on some of the holes in the ground that you find over here.

On the walkways, you can still see some of the effects of the heavy rains from a couple of days ago. With the more typical sprinkles and light rain we usually get, this type of thing is fairly rare.

One of the most obvious changes that happens at the dog park around this time of year is the appearance of these fences in the water. These are put in place to protect the salmon runs that begin to go through the Sammamish River around this time of year, although it does leave some area for the swimming dogs to go into the water.

This sign explains the rationale behind these fences. Apparently, they should come down sometime in November after the years salmon runs have finished. Neither Imola nor Minardi are particularly inclined to do any swimming at this point, although the fact that I did actually see a beagle out in the water swimming earlier this week would seem to indicate that it is possible.

As you can see here, Imola will go right up to the edge of the water, and might even dip a paw or two in (there's a lower ledge below where this picture was taken that allows smaller dogs to get out of the water without having to jump up onto the steps,) but I have yet to see her swim.

Minardi will occasionally follow Imola to the edge of the water, but usually seems content to just keep her distance.

Near the water's edge, a significant number of blackberry bushes can be found. The berries here aren't ripe yet, but blackberry picking becomes a popular activity once they do ripen. For better or for worse, you generally don't have to go far to find blackberry bushes around here. In fact, if you wait long enough, the things will come to you, which usually means you can look forward to an afternoon worth of backbreaking labor getting rid of the blasted things, but at least you'll have a delicious helping of blackberry pie to look forward to at the end, right? Didn't think so.

One other interesting thing I noticed was that this one tree, over by the Dog Watch bridge. Many of the outer leaves of this particular tree seem to be covered in what I would assume to be some sort of insect egg, although my searching hasn't been able to determine exactly what they are. Is anyone out there familiar with these? One way or another, I don't know if I want to be around here when these things start hatching...

The last time I took care of Imola and Minardi, for some unexpected reason I found myself giving consideration to getting a dog of my own, although the thought just kind of went away on its own after a while. Although these two have have actually been pretty well behaved this week, I am reminded of just how much work all this dog keeping stuff takes, especially for a high-maintenance breed like the Beagle. Of course, you've probably heard the old advice that a single guy should get himself a dog if he wants to meet women, but with dogs like these, when would I actually have time to meet anyone? Either way, I think I'll be content to just stick with letting my parents keep the dogs and coming over to visit. At least that way there's less to clean up...

A busy week in the Microsoft area for real estate. Eight new listings are on the market this week, bringing the total of available homes back up to one of the higher numbers we've seen this year. However, there was a lot of other activity with homes receiving offers, going pending, price reductions, and home sales closing. There was a brisk amount of activity as things were happening in real estate around Microsoft.

This week’s closed sales:

$498,600 Tri-level in Gleneden with a list price of $498,888 on the market for 4 days sold $288 under full price. ***The seller did everything right. This was a well priced home with significant updating, granite, stainless steel, fresh paint and carpet.

$645,000 Ardmore Village was originally listed at $665,000, sold in 46 days for almost 3.5% below the asking price. ***Came on the market at less than what other homes in the neighborhood started selling for earlier in the year.

"This is a known iPhone bug that is being fixed in the next software update in September"

Granville Richard Seymour Redmond was born on 9 March, 1871 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died o

Granville Richard Seymour Redmond was born on 9 March, 1871 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died on 24 May, 1935 in Los Angeles.

Granville Redmond was an American Painter, born to a hearing family. Granville Redmond contracted Scarlet Fever at around 2 1/2 to the age of 3; when he recovered, he was found to be deaf. This may have prompted his family's decision to move from the East Coast to San Jose, California: the possibility for his education at the Berkeley School for the Deaf.

Granville Redmond attended the Berkeley School for the Deaf (later the California School for the Deaf) from 1879 to 1890 where his artistic talents were recognized and encouraged. There his teacher Theophilus d'Estrella taught him painting, drawing and pantomime.

When he graduated from CSD, Granville Redmond enrolled at another CSD: the California School of Design in San Francisco, where he worked for 3 years with teachers such as Arthur Matthews and Amedee Joullion. Granville Redmond famously won the W. E. Brown Medal of Excellence. Granville Redmond associated with many other artists, including Gottardo Piazzoni and Giuseppe Cadenasso. Piazzoni learned American Sign Language and he and Granville Redmond were lifelong friends. They lived together in Parkfield, California, and Tiburon.

1893 saw Granville Redmond win a scholarship from California School of the Deaf and from the School of Design, which made it possible for him to study in Paris at the Academie Julian under teachers Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. At the Academie Julian, he roomed with sculptor Douglas Tilden, famous Deaf sculptor and another graduate of the California School for the Deaf. In 1895 in Paris his painting Matin d'Hiver, was accepted for the Paris Salon.

In 1898, he returned to California and settled in Los Angeles, where he painted many beautiful beach scenes. Granville Redmond was married in 1899 to Carrie Ann Jean, a former student of the Illinois School for the Deaf. Together they had three children. It is not known if they were Deaf or could hear.

While living in Los Angeles, he became friends with Charles Chaplin, who admired the natural expressiveness of a Deaf person using American Sign Language. Charles Chaplin asked Granville Redmond to help him develop the techniques Charles Chaplin later used in his silent films. Charles Chaplin, impressed with Granville Redmond's skill gave granville Redmond a studio on the movie lot, collected his paintings, and sponsored him in silent acting roles - the sculptor in City Lights for example.

During this time Granville Redmond did not neglect his painting. Through Charles Chaplin he met Los Angeles neighbor artists Elmer Wachtel and Norman St. Clair. They showed works at the Spring Exhibition held in San Francisco in 1904. By 1905 Granville Redmond was receiving considerable recognition as a leading landscape painter and bold colorist. Granville Redmond's artwork was sometimes compared to Matisse; he loved painting flowers and dark, moody scenes.

Granville Redmond's work is in a variety of collections:

Irvine Museum, California

Laguna Art Museum, California

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University

De Young Museum, the Bancroft Library, San Francisco

California School for the Deaf

New York City Museum, New York

Oakland Museum, California

Granville Redmond's Awards:

Medal, Louisiana Purchase Exposition, 1904

Silver Medal, Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition, Seattle, Washington, 1909

July, 2008 349 homes for sale, 55 sales, 16% chance of selling.

June, 2008 323 homes for sale, 75 sales, 23.2% chance of selling.

May, 2008 347 homes for sale, 47 sales, 13.5% chance of selling.

July, 2007 205 homes for sale, 69 sales, 33.7% chance of selling.

The area east of 405 and south of highway 908, the Redmond/Bellevue area close to Microsoft, again has the strongest real estate sales activity for the eastside. Even though it's strongest real estate market on the eastside, there was less of a chance to get a home sold last month than in June. June stands out as the strongest performing month for most eastside neighborhoods. July's market performance and the absorption rate is more similar to May's real estate activity than June's. It will be interesting to see if the Microsoft area, Redmond and East Bellevue, remains the strongest area on the Eastside for real estate sales. I'll keep you posted on the weekly/monthly activity.

Good Idea: Helping people find your business by putting out coupons at the friendly neighborhoo

Good Idea: Helping people find your business by putting out coupons at the friendly neighborhood newsstand.

Bad Idea: Not bothering to list any addresses on the coupon that aren't 1,200 miles away from here.

Granted, I suspect most people who live around here are aware that K1 Speed does have a location here in Redmond (which is apparently the only one that isn't in the Los Angeles area) and most people here know where it is. On the other hand, if you don't happen to know where this place is, it tends to be a bit tricky to find, and the last time I checked, I don't think the directions to get there included driving south on I-5 until you see Mickey Mouse waving to you at the side of the road. Not a bad place for a nice little drive once you get there, but good luck finding it...
