• This woman has not voted in over 50 years, doesn't even live in America anymore, and is 106 years old.  And yet she feels that she needs to vote this time around.  And also that she needs to proclaim to the world (or at least the BBC) that she's planning on voting for Obama and going against the preference of the Catholic church, of which she has been a nun for decades.  Seriously? What was the point of this story?
• This is why people think Americans/ people from the South are stupid.  Honestly, no one even found a fire extingusher or anything once the house started setting ablaze?  I feel kind of bad for the rat, if these people weren't tying him up and setting ribbons on fire, this wouldn't have even happened.  What a disaster.
• I'm sure airports will find a way to further embarass and exploit travelers even if they're able to get this technology up and running.  Either that or we're going to find out in a few years that the method used to scan your feet causes cancer.  That would be great if we could eliminate having to walk through airport security shoe-less.
• It sounds like the bodies of the rich and famous are succumbing to the economic woes of the day. What a shame.  Maybe eventually they'll start having to make other cutbacks, but for now it looks like everyone else is going to have to suffer more by looking at uglier and older rich people. Damn.

Morgen (dinsdag 13/10) besteedt het Eindhovens Dagblad opnieuw aandacht aan de zwarte rattenplaag die Nuenen c.a. al geruime tijd teistert. Bezorgde bewoners (verenigd via www.rattenplaagnuenen.nl) en 'de politiek' zijn het wachten op de resultaten van het KAD-rapport en actie door de gemeente Nuenen c.a. inmiddels beu.

W70 Nuenen c.a. trok het laatste jaar - middels schriftelijke vragen - reeds twee maal aan de bel bij het College van B&W en heeft afgelopen week zelfs de hulp van de Oberburgemeisterin van het Duitse stadje Hamel(e)n (wereldberoemd geworden door het sprookje rondom de Rattenvanger van Hamel(e)n) ingeroepen.

I thought it would be nice to tell you that in physics we don't just make oversimplified models of cows, like a spherical cow. We also sometimes do more complicated models as well, and hope to say something useful with them. It's just that it doesn't always work the way one wants to and one has to learn that models are only good insofar as they actually help you in solving a problem.

Here to my left is a cow eating grass. Notice that this is a more sophisticated cow than "just a spherical cow" because this one is doing something more than just rolling in the ground.

Sometimes our models are not really robust like cows, but they have the personality of a rat: if you look at them too much they run and disappear. But before that, they might bite you. They can also eat your good ideas and leave a lot of holes in them. When one invents a model, one has to look at it carefully to see if it is a rat or not. If one finds oneself trapped with one of these, there is only one thing one can do.

One has to call for a spherical cat. These are the models that eat other bad models for breakfast. They are spherical because of their over-indulgence in eating other models. These are the guys that show that spherical rats are what they are, and after playing with the rat for a while, they kill it without mercy. 

Spherical cats also show up in quantum mechanics. They were a favorite pet of Schrodinger. 

And if your pet cat looks like this, put it on a diet. The vet can help you with that.

So basically, some scientists found a way to make living things glow. And they do it safely. Pretty cool I'd say. The scientists got the idea from jellyfish that glow when exposed to certain wavelengths of light. I'm not 100% sure what they really use this concept for, but I'm sure it's important. The fact that they made a rainbow brain (pictured in the top right of the article) is pretty damn cool.

Imagine, now we can play army men, but with real people! We'll make all the good guys glow green, the bad guys will glow tan (or red so it's more like a video game), and the civilians will glow blue or white! The only negative side is that there is no good or bad in war. But glowing people shooting each other is the laser tag of the future! Only more painful.

Kitty was eat a mouse/rat.  It seemed too small to be a rat, but the tail was far too long to be a mouse.  I think Kitty had devoured half of it by the time I walked by so it very well could have been a rat. 

Colleen: Ew, disgusting!  That's gross cat.
Random girls in the backyard who don't live here (have I mentioned that people come and go all the time?): Blank stares in my direction.
Colleen: Awkward laugh.  The cat's eating a mouse/rat.
Random girls: Slight giggles, still uncomfortably staring at me.

I proceed to go in the back door.  I take notice of Halima in the doorway.

Colleen: Halima, the cat was eating a mouse/rat.
Halima: Oh, sore-ry. (Ugandans put a lot of emphasis on the first syllable of "sorry.")
Colleen:  It's not your fault.

I continue inside the kitchen-ish area of the orphanage.  I'm greeted by Auntie.

Auntie: Caaaaa-lean.
Colleen: Auuun-tee.
Auntie:  Hands me a plate.  Breakfast.
Colleen:  Opens the plate.  An omelet.  Delicious, but did I mention that I just saw the cat eating a mouse/rat.  Vomit*.

* I didn't vomit.  I only said that to add drama to the story, as a matter of fact I've not had any weird intestinal problems since I've been here.  I downed the omelet as fast as I could while thinking about Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar before thoughts of the torn apart mouse/rat consumed my brain again.

Gemeenteraadslid Ralf M.M. Stultiens heeft deze week een officieel verzoek tot hulp ingediend bij mevrouw Susanne Lippmann, Oberburgemeisterin van het schilderachtige Duitse stadje Hameln. Ook alle raadsfracties in de Rattenstadt hebben Stultiens' brandbrief inmiddels ontvangen. Wellicht dat de locale politiek aldaar Nuenen c.a. van de hardnekkige zwarte rattenplaag kan verlossen. Per slot van rekening weet de wereldberoemde 'Rattenvanger van...' de stad Hameln - met zijn magische fluit - al sedert 1284(!) volledig rattenvrij te houden.

W70 Nuenen c.a. heeft al twee maal schriftelijke vragen aan het College van B&W gesteld met als doel een bestuurlijke oplossing voor de overdosis aan het zwarte knagende gespuis (Rattus rattus) te bewerkstelligen. Ook vroeg de fractie vorige maand naar de uitslag van het onderzoeksrapport van het KAD, het rapport dat - volgens het onderzoeksinstituut althans - al enkele maanden op de gemeentelijke burelen stof ligt te happen.

Op www.rattenplaagnuenen.nl - een burgerinitiatief - stromen de meldingen en klachten inmiddels overvloedig binnen. Inmiddels zijn niet minder dan 18(!) overlastlocaties in kaart gebracht. Kortom, het wordt nu echt tijd om een fatsoenlijke oplossing te forceren.

In de wandelgangen, ving de fractie van W70 op dat de gemeente binnenkort 16.000 euro voor de bestrijding van de ongenode gasten uit zal trekken. W70 Nuenen c.a. ziet een dergelijke toezegging graag zo spoedig mogelijk bevestigd maar wacht in de tussentijd bovenal op de publicatie van het KAD-rapport.

W70 is alles behalve van de ratten besnuffeld en zal er dan ook voor zorgdragen dat dit ratje zeker nog een staartje krijgt!

Tuesday: "Music and Release"
Rum the sparrow's rehabilitation was completed and he was released. I found much happiness through my trumpet that day.

Wednesday: "Fire and Melty"
Set up a newly arrived group of mantids; sketched the day away surrounded by delicious candle scents.

Thursday: "Recall Machine"
I couldn't get warm and so couldn't sleep or think straight. An electric heater helped.

Friday: "Storytelling"
Experimentation with a graphic novel.

Saturday: "Concept of Limitation"
Blue, my husky, used to hike with me for around 10 to 15 miles everyday (once we went almost 20). I ended up in the hospital. For the first time since recovery from surgery, we went walking together... and in a sane manner. I have no concept of human limitation and have to be careful.

Sunday: "Musical Politics"
Listened to all sorts of new music all morning, saw a movie in the afternoon, and spent the evening working on more art. Lovely day. :)

Hi, I'm here again to carry out the updating of my program. This version has corrected some errors:

1 - Window Manager: The "close window" only runs on Windows Vista. So I did the review and now it works perfectly.

2 - Search File in File Manager: The client was producing an error sending the file name without disc name before. Example: "c: \ *. jpg" ----> "*. jpg"
Now, if you do not put the disc name before, the server will go to search in all computer.

3 - Password: Passwords are not listed correctly when there are many passwords registered. Now, the error was corrected.

It was added in the screen capture the option to save the current image.

This Sunday (October 5, 2008) is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, the environment and our beloved town. In celebration, St. John's Episcopal Church and several other churches will make a public blessing for animals.  People and critters will be gathering around 1:00 at Dolores Park (near the 19th Street entrance), after an 11:00 service at St. John's.

Last year, they blessed dozens of dogs, a few cats, a rat, and a gecko!

If I were an animal, I think I'd like to be blessed. It couldn't hurt, even for Miss Tilly (above), who's currently celebrating the High Holy Days.
