Mixtape IMO: It's good, a good example of what he's like if you haven't heard him before. He even touches down on Lil Wayne's 'A Milli' (which I don't think is as great as everyone makes out to be). The one I kept playing over and over was 'Fire Alie', but maybe because it's the DnD Remix of Cleptomaniacs' 'All I Do'. Actually, it's both, the hook is catchy too, alie.

The influential Hip-Hop duo Blue Scholars, were recently featured on the user content based television channel Current TV, if you haven't heard of the group, I would describe them as thoughtful musicians reporting the ins and outs of life in Seattle, vividly and poetically in their tracks.

This short documentary has a great pace and is incredibly endearing to the cause their music represents, Geologic who provides the vocals for Blue Scholars is heavily involved in community projects and delivers a message deeply rooted in the struggles of working class American immigrants. Partnering with Geo is the avant-garde producer Sabzi, who is a member of the Baha'i Faith. He is trained in jazz piano, though nowadays his palette delves in Hip-Hop, which he uses to instill a positive message for young people.

So, generally speaking, I'm not much of a hip-hop guy.  I'm usually much more interested in lyric-based rap than dance music.  Perhaps that's the white-boy-with-no-rhythm in me speaking, but I can't do much about that.

However, recently I haven't been able to stop listening to Spank Rock.  The lyrics are trashy (although sometimes quite good) and the songs are all about dancing and girls, but the production is really outstanding and refreshingly different from your clubbing mainstays.

The beats, of course, are pretty generic, but something different that you'll hear in Spank Rock's cuts are these really intense noise swells that seem to come out of nowhere.  They serve as perfect transitions between sections of a song, they often lead into some pretty fast rapping (and sometimes mark the point where Amanda Blank often comes in with her verses):

Something tells me that having a white girl with attitude as your tag-team MC garners you tons of cred with the hipster crowd.  It's new and different and... well, she's pretty cute.  Not only that, but she spits like a beast.

I think my favorite thing about Spank Rock, however, is how sarcastic they are.  They are well aware of how ridiculous the club scene is.  They know that they're putting out club music and they know that they're doing it better than everybody else.  Maybe they're not as famous as other outfits, but the quality of their music, the fun and quirky style they evoke, and the trashy humor that they keep in their lyrics put them way ahead of the rest in my book.  Not only that, but it seems like their shows are a riot:

Anyways, I'll definitely be including some of their stuff in upcoming mixes for any parties that I'm DJ'ing.  I'd suggest that you check out some of their stuff (their singles especially).

When it comes to liking a song, the genre is always crucial. As in my previous lists, this chart will again be very heavy on rhythm and blues. However, unlike my previous yearend charts where hiphop and rap music are also largely favored, 2007 was more of a stalemate when it comes to the evolution of hiphop. Apart from strong CD’s by Kanye West (Graduation) and Common (Finding Forever), rap music is sadly on a decline in 2007. New material from Nelly, 50 Cent, and T.I. pale in comparison to their previous works, while other major rap artists will only be releasing new material by 2008.

R&B, on the other hand, is full of new talents. New female soul singers have emerged in the limelight and were given significant radio exposure such as Chrisette Michelle, Ledisi, and Keyshia Cole. Of course, Jill Scott, Fantasia, and Alicia Keys were still hot in r&b radio. Corinne Bailey Rae also continued her critical success that started in 2006. As for the males, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, and John Legend were all successful in their sophomore efforts. Less stellar performers such as Tank, Marques Houston, and Sammie also contributed to the piano-laden ballads that saturated r&b radio. Moreover, blue-eyed soul (R&B music that is performed by non African-American performers fall into this category) was also well represented this year with the likes of Robin Thicke and AI 5 alumnus Elliott Yamin.

      Along with the Norweigan duo Stargate, Timbaland is perhaps the hottest producer of 2007. While his own album entitled Timbaland Presents Shock Value received mixed critical reviews, the CD yielded several notable radio hits.

Pop music, on the other hand, remained reliably entertaining for this year. Rihanna had the biggest hit of her career in 2007, Daughtry enjoyed massive radio airplay despite lukewarm reception from music critics. Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5, and Pink had successful albums this year, while mega-sellers like Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, and Janet Jackson all tanked with their 2007 outputs. On the other hand, pop ballads were still relatively hard-sells in radio, especially when it comes from maturing artists like Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Bon Jovi. Thankfully, John Mayer and Michael Buble both bucked the trend.

The songs below made it to the list for a variety of reasons. A handful of the choices made it because this writer has a personal inclination for the discography of the singer. In some instances, the musical genre already does the trick. Still, other choices proved to be too ear-friendly for the writer to resist. Finally, some songs mirror very personal experiences in the life of this blogger through their all-too personal lyrics.

Enough of the long-winded introduction. Below are the most memorable songs of 2007 –at least from my own turf!

I've been listening to this song since Kanye performed it at the VMA's, and I really like it. Lots of people have a really violent reaction to this track, but I guess that's what happens when an artist pushes the limits of his style and what's happening in music today.

it's THE HYPE.  even wale, a budding hip-hop star and "streetwear" aficionado gets the cold shoulder from supreme's staff - and my man wore it on the cover of URB (low key should've rocked that white/blue crest hoodie though, just sayin').  new fall/winter shit is up, and yet again the cool cache of an exclusive brand is a little depleted.  i'd probably be less cynical if i could afford to buy all my favorite pieces.  @ supreme

Okay let's begin........So I'm watching it right now and it's very black and white. It basically looks like a "Scream" pt. 2 but cheaper, and with Comm Sense and P instead of Michael and Janet. Beat is very dope, very futuristic like. Sounds like something you would play while riding around space in your space ship picking up hot alien females whose otherworldly breasts dispense grape soda and Hawaiian Punch. Let's get back to the video shall we? Uhhhhh it seems Pharrell has taken my idea of having a robot as his proxy. Lots of graphics in the background. Hype used tons of CGI. There's some random words flashing across the screen. Lots of random shit. Ummm oh, I like Common in scientific nerd mode. That's kinda cool. Is that robot wearing BBC? Pharrell's metallic voice in the chorus is fresh. Well, that's about it really. Hope I painted a pretty picture for you, if you didn't like it blame Universal Music Group.
