Me and my mom went out to do some grocery and visit my grandma Fe at her house/ bakery (three floor building) in Metro Manila (Oroquieta, Tayuman). We did the grocery first, and then my Aunt Vivian and cousin Totle texted mom that they will be heading back (to the house/ bakery) after they finish fixing the car in Malabon (from the Cruz family house). After doing grocery, we headed to the bakery seeing them (my cousins Patrick and Jorell, helping) unloading some groceries too, for the bakery store.

Everybody was set and ready to go up, (to do some chica) third floor, the newly renovated room of my Aunt Vivian and cousin Totle. *drum roll* Upon opening the door, blue walls strucked my eyes, *another drum roll please* new Samsung LCD Full HD installed on the wall, with complete home theater features/ add- ons, new computer table, and an interior worthy of a UZ episode (Urban Zone, a Philippine TV show that features home interiors, architectures, and art) *pictures of the room to be posted later* It's very different from the look (renovation of Malabon house was I think last month) they did for the house in Malabon, where their room is into the modern feel of silver, black and white palette. This room was into classic homey feel, not so classic with the blue shade, manly classic?! I think. It comes with dark wood furnitures (table, bed, cabinets). I like the details like the lights in the room, they chose to put two lights that look likes something a warehouse would put, silver whatevers. Nice contrast of flat blue (poster color shade of Ultramarine or the other shade from Sakura) and pale yellow green colors makes the room chicly home.

Ah, it’s time for another story where Jen has some crazy, panic-inducing thing happen to her a

Ah, it's time for another story where Jen has some crazy, panic-inducing thing happen to her and then she tells everyone about it, so they can laugh at her misfortune. Sigh.

So last night I was coming home from dinner with Nathan & Co. We went to a new restaurant I'd never visited before, in a part of town I rarely go to, so there were already a few strikes against me. The drive home should have been a long, grueling drive of about 25-30 minutes, but it turned into a longer, more grueling drive of about 50 minutes after a few "setbacks" along the way.

As if it was an omen, Nathan says, "Hey! Have a safe drive home!" as I'm leaving the restaurant. After trying to find the main road through all these little alleys, I finally found GongYi and decided to take that to HuanZhong. I was boogiein' down GongYi when the road ended and I realized that it didn't go to HuanZhong. "No Biggie," I thought, "with my super navigation skills, I'll get home in no time."

Needless to say I got stuck in the eerie no-man's land between the Foreign Affairs Office and the highway. There are no stop lights, no stores with the comforting siren flashes, rare streetlights--just maze-like streets with tall housing complexes poking out of the darkness, teasing you with the possibility of civilization around the next bend.

In Taiwan, whenever you're in a situation like this, you always end up being on a road that turns out to be someone's driveway. It's true. And they're always, ALWAYS outside for some reason. Even when it's 11 p.m. on a Wednesday, they are still outside, bewildered by some equally bewildered, teetering waiguoren paying them a house call in the middle of the night.

I once read a book that explained that, if you're ever stuck in a maze, just put your hand on the left wall, and walk while never removing your hand from that wall and eventually you'll find the exit. I tried to use the same kind of theory in this matrix of concrete and crap, but this was no true maze--it was an infinite sphere whose center was everywhere and whose circumference was nowhere. And I was right in the middle of it.

After thirty minutes, I eventually whittled my way out of Creepstown, found HeNan, and headed to that wonderful express beltway that is HuanZhong. And this is where the drive home took a blatant nosedive.

I was screaming down Huanzhong when I got to the ZhongGang overpass. ZhongGang is a giant road, so you can't cross it on a scooter, you actually have to use an overpass that's connected to the highway for about a kilometer. You just go up, over, and back down.

The scooter section of the overpass is about the width of a scooter-and-a-half. You couldn't really pass anyone on it (well...maybe a bicycle). The guard rails come up to about your waist--while sitting on your scooter--and you have the highway on your left and a sheer drop onto the busy road below on your right. I don't really like taking the ramp--it feels hectic--and each time I do, all I can think is "it would suck SO badly if you got in an accident here and fell off the bridge." *shudder*

So here I am whirring over this overpass trying not to think about someone falling off the bridge. I took a little, black bag with me to dinner instead of my usual mondo-bag, and right when I got past the middle of the ramp and started my descent, my handbag FLEW OFF THE SCOOTER.

Yes, my handbag--with my ARC, money, debit card, cell phone, etc--decided on a dramatic exit from this world. It wasn't until I was halfway down the hill that I fully realized my purse was GONE--I couldn't really stop--there were people behind me, and, like I said, you can't pass anyone on this thing, so someone would have just slammed into my rear if I had stopped on the ramp.

So, I was in a pickle. Because of the incredibly inconvenient location of the ramp and the busy roads, going back around to drive the ramp again on a recon mission would've taken about 15 minutes; by that time my bag would've been smashed, smushed, or stolen. That was out.

I couldn't very well drive the wrong way up the ramp--that was also a terrible idea.

So I parked the scooter against the curb and decided on the only sensible (hah) recovery option. Walk the wrong way up the one-way ramp on foot and pray that no one would come over it.

Like I said before, it's just wide enough for a scooter and-a-half, or a scooter and a person maybe--that is, if the scooter driver SEES the person and keeps to the side. I was walking into traffic, uphill, so the scooter drivers wouldn't be able to see me.

The thought of getting smashed by a scooter started to freak me out, so I started sprinting up the hill towards a black mass on the road I could only assume/hope/pray was my purse. I didn't even know if it was up there, maybe it had careened over the edge onto ZhongGang, in which case, it was done for.

So there I was, in a nice skirt and sandals, sprinting the wrong-way up a highway off-ramp near midnight, searching for my lost handbag, hair blowing in the wind and adrenaline pumping through my veins like a steam engine smashing into a silverware drawer. Yikes.

Right there, right on the crest of the hill the shiny metal name plate on my purse was glittering in the street lamps, and yes! it was still attached to a black mass! I ran to it, scooped it up, and starting sprinting my way back down the hill.

The way down took forever, the ending seemed just out of reach, like running in a dream. I kept checking over my shoulder, expecting the mother load of Hell's Angels to come tearing on through. My legs were heavy, full of lactic acid.

When I finally reached my scooter I was suffocating--not enough air, not enough oxygen, I was having something like an overwhelmed panic attack and laughing at the same time. I couldn't believe what I had just done and was on somewhat of an endorphin high from the freak out and subsequent run.

I hopped back on my scooter and high-tailed it home, a little slower, a little more cautiously, and with the purses strap wrapped around my ankle--that puppy wasn't going anywhere.

The point of this tale is the also the story of my life right now. And it's mostly directed to one person.

Nick: D'YA SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU'RE NOT AROUND?
Come back. Before something really stupid happens!

Alas, our wonderful late summer weather has washed out part of the road that connects us to everything eastward. To alert the unwary traveller, those fine fellows from the Council have seen fit to place a sign either side of the problem; a single-syllable warning that does nothing to diminish the impending catastrophe...

Given that this is a branch of the Kingdom Cycle Route, perhaps the words DISMOUNT, BRIDGE OUT! or simply AAAAAAAAAAARGH! would have been more pertinent...

Beauty may only be skin deep, but fashion is comprised of layer upon layer of meaning, history, and beauty. Fashionable clothes do not simply appear out of thin air. Fashionable clothes, fabulous shoes, delicate lingerie, and even eye-catching accessories all spring from the fertile minds of today's designers--minds which are very well-versed in the fashions of decades past.

A great designer is as likely to seek her inspiration from 17th century farthingales as she is to find it in 21st century gang culture, 20th century zoot suits, or even 19th century paintings or sculptures. The fashionable clothing we celebrate at Fashion TV and www.ftv.com often borrows from the lines and colors of styles past. The more you explore fashion, architecture, art work, and even music from days of yore, the more precisely you'll be able to decipher and "deconstruct" the fashionable clothes of today.

Want to learn more about the world's most important fashion designers and their sources of inspiration? If so, you'll love our in-depth, behind-the-scenes fashion features. At Fashion TV and www.ftv.com, we're known for the richness and breadth of our original programming.

You'll hear designers express, in their own words, the inspiration for and development of their current collections. One program may include an interview with Anna Sui, describing the 1960s pop inspiration of her Fall 2005 collection. Another program might include Rifat Ozbek of Pollini revealing how Truman Capote's famed Black and White Ball inspired his most recent designs.

Carol Gracias was in the news a couple of years ago when her top slipped off while walking the ramp. Another wardrobe malfunction took place yesterday at the on-going Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in New Delhi.

Belgian model Debbie was walking the ramp in designer Rajesh Pratap Singh's collection at the Wills Lifestyle India fashion week when the incident took place. Her left shoulder strap slipped off, exposing her assets. It was too late when the model pulled the strap back.

Is it an accident or publicity stunt? May be it's part of the fashion show!

I hope Donald got his bags. And didn't pay over the odds for them. Did he turn up ten days early? Or perhaps the bag seller tired of waiting, and passed them on to another eager customer.

I suppose we'll never know, but hundreds of weary commuters must have been wondering the same thing as they trudged up the slope from the train platform this evening.

Nice friendly looking writing. Spacing is a bit dubious - started out large, and got smaller. And "orand" must take a close second in the Great Blackheath Spelling Contest, although as this particular note wasn't supposed to be consumed by many, perhaps the writer should be forgiven.

Extremely lame. Don't waste your money. The show lasted a little over an hour. There was only one ramp. All attendee had to stay on one side and watch which means if you have a small child he/she couldn't see the event. It took place on the parking lot of the amphitheater. Tickets were overly priced for the amount of time they performed. Of course, they hike up the price the day of the event (just like any other event) but that's not the issue, it was a complete RIP OFF. I was really dissapointed as a parent. My kids did not have a good time because they spent most of thier time guarding what little space they had so that they could see the tricks on ramp. PLEASE DO NOT GO or BUY TICKETS TO THIS EVENT.

Following on from two weeks ago, where I left a piece of work called PAX out for collection, I thought I'd give Free Art Friday another go.

This piece was made from one of those ramps that are used to keep cables tidy and stop people tripping over them. I don't know what you call these things - perhaps someone will enlighten me. Anyway, it had been knocking around the estate for months, so I thought I'd use it.

I thought it would be nice to paint an icon, and I thought it might be nice to paint it with a black face (much more representative of the area I live in) - so I based this piece on icons from the ethiopean church, which has a really interesting history, if you're aware of or interested in church history.

We'll see what reaction if any this one gets. It'll go out first thing on Friday 31st July 2008.

On our vacation this month, we went through Missouri, Kansas, Idaho, Utah, Nebraska, Wyoming, Oregon, Montana and Washington (might have left one off). We had to stop many times for bathroom breaks, gas breaks or, on the way back, letting kitty go to the bathroom breaks (yes, we brought home a kitten). We did fairly well in the Rampvan but Utah was a nightmare.

A Rampvan like ours has a conversion that allows for the door to slide open and a ramp to come out the side so mom can drive her wheelchair out of the van. It’s a wonderful invention. However, after driving one, you really take notice of things like speed bumps. Why? Because the conversion is lower than the rest of the van and, as we say, would scrape over a petrified ant.

This is how Utah became such a nightmare. Salt Lake City in particular. We pulled into Salt Lake because one of us needed a bathroom break and we barely got out of the city alive. Every driveway we came across had either a big bump, a dip or some other raised bit that would have scraped half the conversion off. Some of them we had no way of getting over at all. We passed up endless gas stations because of this until we finally found one we’d only drag across and cause ourselves great stress as opposed to decimating the entire bottom of the van. Every place we stopped in Utah was like this.

I’m sure there must be some ordinance about how high speed bumps, dips and parking lot entryways can be for regular cars. But not all cars are regular. Evening out the entrance would go a long way for people like us, and there are more of us than you might think. We have to avoid streets with high speed bumps (they can be lower and do the same thing), we have no hope at all against speed tables, and any parking lot entrance with a high ridge or that lowers much on the way in or out at all is no good. A little height is all right but it doesn’t take much to scrape the hell out of the conversion.

Just a little food for thought if you’re building roads or parking lots or putting in those horrendous half foot high speed bumps. And all speed tables should be banned. Allllllll of them.

A while ago I wrote about my frustration with people who pull their cars in next to my mother’s rampvan, after watching her come down the ramp and knowing she would need to use it again (see that article here). My experiment involved buying three bright orange traffic cones (I bought these) and putting them in the van. When anyone took mom somewhere and there were no van accessible spaces, the van could be parked anywhere with two open spaces. Then the cones could be put next to the van in the empty space needed for the ramp to come down.

So far, this has worked brilliantly. I put the cones at the halfway point in the parking space, close to the sliding door the ramp comes out of. This way people coming in from either side of the space will see them. To date we haven’t had another problem with someone stealing that necessary extra space.

The only thing I’d note is that when they came, the cones smelled BAD. Brand new plastic skunk bad. I threw them in the shower and washed them down good with soap and warm water, dried them, spritzed some Febreze on them and they were good to go. Just in case you buy some and experience the same thing.

One of the most useful (and expensive) pieces of equipment in Mom’s life with ALS is our Toyota Sienna rampvan. It happily transports her and her motorized wheelchair wherever she wants to go, so long as there aren’t any speed tables. Or large bumps. Or some small bumps for that matter. I appreciate the thing but I’m convinced it’s possessed. It is at the very least extremely temperamental. You can almost hear it speak.

Most of the time it works just fine. Sometimes though it gets annoyed and refuses to put out the ramp. Or the side door on the driver’s side won’t open. No amount of attempts will succeed when it is in this mood, save for two. If we take it to the dealer, it cooperates with no problem. Naturally, it doesn’t want to look like it needs fixed, it prefers to make us look like morons. Or, the sure-fire method for getting the van to pay attention: asking someone else in the house to come out and look at it. It works every time. If our friend is having trouble with the van wanting to do it’s normal duty, all she has to do is walk in and tell me. In the time it takes me to walk outside, she presses the button to show me and voila! The van works perfectly!

It’s possessed, I tell you. Perhaps we deserve it. One of the world’s orneriest families winds up with an ornery van. It seems sort of fitting.

My mother has ALS. If you don’t know what that is, it is essentially a disease that destroys you

My mother has ALS. If you don’t know what that is, it is essentially a disease that destroys your motor neurons and causes your muscles to become completely ineffective. As a result, when she leaves the house, she uses a motorized wheelchair and goes around town in a rampvan.

My first aggravation is people who park in handicapped spaces even though they are fully mobile and can walk just fine. Thankfully, since mom takes her motorized wheelchair, she can park farther away from the store, even though at times it is ridiculous that she has to. This leads to aggravation number two, which is even more annoying.

Mom’s van has a ramp that comes out the side. We went for this instead of a ramp or lift that came out the back because, let’s face it, taking the time to come down a ramp from the back of a van in a Wal-Mart parking lot can be tantamount to suicide.

Inevitably, mom’s friend has to drive way towards the back of the parking lot to find two spaces together. I’m not going to complain about people who park next to the van when they don’t see mom come out of it - they may be in a hurry and just don’t notice the big “Please park eight feet away” sticker on the side of the van. But there are some people I’d love to slap around a bit. They swing into the space as mom is coming down the ramp, almost taking her and the ramp out, only stopped by mom’s friend waving her arms and screaming. So they pull out and wait.

And then pull right in beside the van!

Now, they just saw a woman in a wheelchair use the ramp to get out, so then, even though there are plenty of spaces available, they pull in so the same woman can no longer access her van. When mom and her friend come back, mom’s friend has to pull the van out and load mom up, while cars wanting to go down the aisle honk at her.

What kind of a jerk do you have to be to purposely cut off a truly handicapped person’s access to the only vehicle they can be transported in? This is only one of many frustrations I have, but it’s the one I most wanted to rant about at this moment. Just wait until my (hopefully) secret weapons get here…TRAFFIC CONES!
