Most libraries are quiet.

Most libraries are quiet.

It may be a public library, a library situated in an educational institution or an inbuilt library in the workplace. Regardless of its type or location, almost all libraries promote silence. The rationale behind this is that visitors go to the library to read, so concentration and focus is very important. And maintaining silence in the library is paramount to achieving this.

I totally agree with this.Â

But this rule has a flaw. It does not encourage the sharing of insights between readers and it does not encourage bonding among library users. In fact, this rule achieves the exact opposite: isolating one reader from another. The term "alienation" might even an appropriate term in this context. Just walk into any library and see for yourself. Some readers will be hunched over a table studying on a solitary basis, some will be in groups but are forced to whisper and for short period of time while others are merely browsing titles by themselves at the bookshelves. The last group of library users actually remind me of romantic scenes in movies whereby the male lead will remove a title from a row of books on a shelf and see the love of his life through the slit between the books. Unfortunately, such scenes of romanticism don't happen in real life. I always feel that this is a constant painstaking effort by the filmmaker to imbue some human contact in the library. Because in real life, the library's almost like a dead town.

Just contrast this with the Greek's Agora and we will see a very contrasting difference. The Agora in ancient times is both a marketplace and a place of assembly. People come together to interact and exchange thoughts and ideas. The Agora should be the best place that any library can model. Of course, the library should not be turned into a marketplace.  Libraries should not only be a place for acquiring knowledge, it should also be a channel for people to exchange insights. A library user who spends 3 hours to read books is better off spending 2 hours reading books and 1 hour engaging in a discussion with other readers. This is because all of us have our own preferences in the types of books that we read and this will cause "blind spots" in our areas of focus when it comes to reading content. Talking and exchanging thoughts with readers whose preferences are different from our own will remove these "blind spots" and enrich us at the same time.

This can be achieved by having libraries build discussion rooms within the premises. This will separate the readers from other individuals/groups who wish to engage in a discussion. To me, acquiring information and knowledge through solitary reading and gaining insights and wisdom through our interactions with others are equally important functions of any library. But currently, the library's daily operations and regulations seem to fulfill only the former. This is indeed regrettable.

But there is hope.

In recent years, the rules of some libraries in educational institutions are lightening up. Students in these schools are allowed to discuss among themselves in the library and it can be observed that the noise level is not high as well. There are no complaints from students. In fact, they are receptive to this idea and welcome the change.  This observation further reinforces my perception that voices from discussion should fill the library, not silence.

Library management committee should also take the initiative to introduce sharing sessions (categorised into different themes/subjects/topics) for library users, whereby interested library users are encouraged to join in a discussion session on a regular basis with like-minded individuals.

Ultimately, it's the discussion sessions among people that often spark fresh ideas, not occasional epiphany from solidarity and absolute silence.

The Power of Birthdays: Goal Setting and Goal Measurement

I will be celebrating my thirty-ninth birthday next Monday. Â We use the word “celebrating

I will be celebrating my thirty-ninth birthday next Monday. Â We use the word "celebrating" in conjunction with birthdays but do we really mean it? Â Most often, I find my family and friends do not "celebrate" their birthdays but rather mark them off as notches in the side of a casket or rings on a tree stump.Â

Too much emphasis I fear is placed on the marking of time of that last year and not enough on what was accomplished over those last 365 days. Birthdays can serve as a wonderful opportunity to set goals or measure progress.  Lots of people set goals on New Year's Eve, why not your birthday?  I decided just the other day that I would like to complete an Olympic Triathlon by my fortieth birthday.  It has been five years since I last did a triathlon, but I know I have a year to train.  I am smiling now, knowing that I will be in better shape this time next year.

Don't get hung up on numbers and aging. Â Live your life. Â We honestly don't know if we have one more day, one more year, or one hundred. Â I believe we should take care of ourselves and really try to live a long life, but don't build up anxiety and regret. Â I believe the best way to live a long life and a memorable one is to be active. Â Set goals and go after them. Â The completion of a goal is a wonderful feeling, but the journey getting there is what really enriches our lives. Â Savor the journey. Â

One more activity I like to do on my birthday is to take time to appreciate those who have helped me along the way. Â Birthdays are an excellent opportunity to reflect and give thanks to our blessings. Â We didn't get this far on our own. Â Continue that attitude of gratitude and remember your friends and family.

Don't wait until your birthday, start now. Â Compete this sentence: By my next birthday I would like to__________________________________________________. Now go after it.

Happy Birthday.

I came across this thread on Tribe this morning about when and how you should name teachers under wh

I came across this thread on Tribe this morning about when and how you should name teachers under whom you studied or with whom you worked.

I can't attest to everyone, but I linked up everyone I took at least a season's worth (3 months) of classes with on my links section because I liked these people and hope that maybe others will check them out. I don't do it to brag or to look like a better dancer. I simply wish to pay respect to my teacher. I don't wish to name drop.

The teachers who I claim are influential are ones I studied under for a longer time (about a year normally) and/or I feel I gained a lot out of it. Their styles meshed with me more or perhaps it is because I studied under them for a long time. I feel that those people have had a bigger influence on me and my style of dance.

I don't consider videos/DVDs or workshops really studying under someone. The former can be useful for some people, but the instructor on the DVD has no say in whether you're truly getting his/her style or can correct you... It would be like if I told people I studied at MIT, because I use their OpenCourseware (lecture notes and other goodies posted online). I think workshops are a big step above learning from a DVD and one can gain a lot, but I'm not convinced that it's enough to say you truly studied under someone. You can get a lot of useful things out of it, but I can't say that you get nuances and an entire effect in a day or a weekend.

For my own benefit and perhaps for use in the future, I have a dance resume with everything on it. I don't think it's professional to misrepresent yourself. It's setup like a combination of an actor's resume and my 'normal' resume. The normal aspect of it clearly states under whom I studied, what kind of study (class, private lesson, workshop), and for how long. I think it's important, because there's a huge difference among those three. To make an analogy using my normal resume, I once had an internship at a nuclear physics laboratory. I state that I had an internship, not that I worked there. To me, if I were to state that I worked there, it sounds like I had a 40 hr/week job for a while, not a summer internship with somewhat flexible hours.

I can't comment on other people's motivations, because I don't know what they are. Perhaps they have no motivations regarding this matter and don't think hard about the wording. Perhaps they realize they are intentionally misrepresenting things. I have no clue. At the end of the day, I do strongly believe that it is important to be as honest as possible when representing yourself. I worked as a contract employee for a book publishing company last year, and every place I went to expected my skills as is. The same with physics jobs. You don't have write dryly, but certainly don't exaggerate your skills. It may come back to haunt you.

As for dance, someone on Tribe put it best (paraphrasing): a good video of your dancing speaks more volumes about you than under whom you studied.

The relationship between educators and the syllabus is very interesting.Â
However, we will not be

The relationship between educators and the syllabus is very interesting.Â

However, we will not be able to discuss this relationship if we do not have an in-depth understanding of the two. So, let's have a look at the role of an educator first.

In recent years, there's been a rise in the number of prominent lecturers known for their lectures. It will be good to question the causes of their popularity. The first thing that comes into our minds will probably be the use of humour. All of us love humour. Thus, using humour to sustain the attention of one's audience is often used by professional speakers. However, if we are to look a little closer at the source of some educators' popularity, it usually goes beyond humour. Humour entertains, but lecturers also need to enable/encourage students to retain information. I believe that professional speakers have the same objectives as well. Humour does not work well in this aspect. Some other ingredients are required for information retention.

So, what are these factors?

I believe that understanding the personality of the students is important in engaging them in the lessons. However, this is most effective in a classroom setting where educators are able to focus on individual students. When it comes to lecturing or presenting, the number of students is too high and the time too short for the understanding of individual's personalities. But there's another way, which is to develop an ability to relate to one's audience.

I believe that this applies not just to lecturers and presenters but to educators on the whole. As educators, we need to understand the psyche of the students and understand their interests and attitude towards issues. We need to read widely to increase our understanding of the current happenings of the world because our students are equally IT-savvy as us. We need to have presentation slides with a high level of visuals because students of current generations are very visual. I feel that the successful educators around the world employ the right blend of the abovementioned factors.

Indeed, educators are so crucial to the success of any lesson that they surpass the importance of any syllabus. When one places a great educator in a classroom, he or she will be able to bring any lesson to life even if the syllabus is not well-structured. However, a mediocre educator will not be able to bring a lesson to life even when the syllabus is structured well. Some educators or school administrators might be aware of this issue but not much can be done about it since placing emphasis on the hiring of good educators over redesigning a set of syllabus requires more time, effort and cost. Moreover, it's easier to modify an existing set of syllabus than to maintain a consistent teaching/ coaching style of good educators (which is almost an impossible if not uphill task, considering that all individuals have different personalities and teaching styles).

Good educators should be nurtured but we should also question the very existence of the syllabus. While I personally feel that syllabus is important for students to build their foundations in their early years, there should be considerations for syllabus to be removed in higher level learning.  Educators should open up a lesson for students to explore with no syllabus (replaced with a topic), since any set of syllabus will easily constrict the issues discussed during the lesson. As long as a set of syllabus exists, the students' learning will be hampered in some way, since they are encouraged to move in a specific direction by the lesson objectives and any tasks that they are asked to do. In the early years, syllabus has been useful as it guides students on the subjects that they are studying within a specific domain. It has been feasible since knowledge is scarce then and to learn through an educator is indeed a privilege. However, with the onset of the knowledge economy and the internet, information is increasing every day and shared among all of us. The amount of information that can be gathered on the internet can easily surpass the level of knowledge of any educator. Just think of the term "advertising". How many of us educators are able to say that we know more about advertising than what's available on the internet? I don't think so. Therefore, providing students with lessons consisting of customised content is passe. So, do students still require educators? My answer is yes, but now educators should guide/facilitate students in their learning, and not to teach.

So, how do we guide/facilitate our students' learning? We do this by fulfilling individual students' need for knowledge. We guide them to achieve what they need to learn to do well in life. And each student is different. Herein lies the challenge of the contemporary educator. Hence, with a set of syllabus, we are actually chaining our students and preventing them from expanding their horizons. Remove the syllabus, and our students will soar.

In the absence of a syllabus, the lesson will be great. For instance, consider a lesson on "Advertisement". Since there is no syllabus, students will be able to explore the topic of advertising according to their needs. Should one student decide to carve out a career in print advertising, he or she can research in that specific area. Should another student decide to pursue a career in online advertising, it can be achieved too. As educators, we guide/facilitate them in their process of learning. When it comes to assessment, it can be done using a project-based approach (with no exams). Students can then be encouraged to do something of their interest.  This approach will also resolve the issue of graduates not attuned to the demands of the work place, since their research is based on current happenings and not on case studies that occurred a long time ago.

Over time, we can replace our designation of "educators" with "nurturers".

This approach that is recommended is rather drastic and some educators might not agree with it. Nevertheless, it's good for educators to give this approach some thoughts. Should this be implemented, it will imply a complete shift in the paradigm of education.

The face of education will never be the same again.

But then again, as educators, we need to move with the times like all other professions.

In fact, we need to move faster than the rest.

P.S: Coincidentally, I came across the concept of Reggio Emilia in the papers shortly after I have penned this article. Reggio Emilia's concepts are very close to my recommendations above, save for the fact that it's implemented at the pre-school level, rather than higher level learning.

Especially noteworthy is this sentence:

Teacher autonomy is evident in the absence of teacher manuals, curriculum guides, or achievement tests. The lack of externally imposed mandates is joined by the imperative that teachers become skilled observers of children in order to inform their curriculum planning and implementation.

Beautifully said.

Should curriculum and syllabus be here to stay, this is the way that it should be implemented.

"Inspiration is for amateurs!"

I'm sure this has been overheard in many design studios and classrooms, but having this idea, in my mind, is like a quantum physicist asserting: only beginners use pre-existing matter!

Inspiration comes from whatever it is that inspires, not just from studying art books or visually dismantling works to analyze the composition and elements. Inspiration can come from something simple, like studying an insect or a leaf found while taking a walk. It can come from something extremely complex, as in being under the influence of a strong and strange matter foreign to our pliable nerve cells. It can also come from throwing eggs at a plexiglass wall while reading aloud an annual business report of American Express. It comes from anything and everything!

To claim that inspiration is something you put behind once a "professional level" is reached is to make the assertion that at some time your mind will cease to become enlightened, by anything! No more senses, no more books, no longer would you have the need to even communicate with other people!

In the same reasoning that a physicist who studies atomic material or a manufacturer of plastic toys can explain, that you cannot create something from nothing, our ideas and artistic pursuits come not from a vacuum of empty space inside our brains, but rather from the spectrum of our insights and perceptions of experience.

This is not to say, of course, that our culture can progress if everyone is laying around dreaming, being "inspired" all day, right? Steven Pressfield wisely noted in his book The War of Art that the writer, Somerset Maugham, was asked whether he wrote according to a schedule or only when he was struck by inspiration, to which he replied, "I write only when inspiration strikes. Fortunately it strikes every morning at nine o'clock sharp."

"Inspiration is for amateurs!?" If that's the case, I'll aspire to be a professional amateur.

There’s been a rise in home schooling / home education recently, whereby children need not r

There's been a rise in home schooling / home education recently, whereby children need not register formally at an educational institution for an academic education but rather, they are educated from home. The onus of being an educator for these children usually falls on their parent(s) , who put in time and effort to educate their children in the midst of their work . There have also been instances where one of the parents left their job to coach and educate their children.

Home schooling / Home education is getting more common and popular these days due to the fact that some parents feel that their children are not given enough attention by educators in school. This is not a fault of the educators but that of the traditional educational system, where numerous children are placed in a group within a classroom to be educated by an educator. Over time, the number of students in a class has increased drastically, to a point where educators are facing the challenge of catering to the different personalities, learning and communication styles of the children. However, the cause of this challenge faced by the educators does not lie with the increase in classroom size but rather, in the fundamental mindset of group education. From an idealistic perspective, each student should be educated by an educator on a one-to-one basis. This will enable the students to learn at their own time, considering the late developers and the fact that each student is different in their personalities, communicating and learning styles. But of course, the lack of manpower and resources almost makes this endeavour an impossible task.

This probably explains the sudden intrusion of the students' parents into their children's education. And in some cases, students are now doing better with home schooling / home education. Does this spell the end of all educators' responsibilities worldwide? I do not think so. Ultimately, not all parents have the time to engage their children in home schooling / home education, considering today's hectic work pace. So, there will still be a substantial number of children who will pursue a traditional education. However, as educators, we should not let these students down in terms of their opportunity to learn. We need to improve our students' learning progress.

To achieve this objective, a students' personality assessment test is recommended. This test should gauge a student's personality, communicating style and learning style. It should be introduced at the start of a student's first school term, before the commencement of classes. Implementing this test at secondary level and above will be ideal, since students younger than twelve might not be attuned to such test, thus rendering the test inaccurate. The results of the students' test should subsequently be stored in the school's online databases, to be retrieved by different educators who are coaching the students in class throughout the semesters. In this way, by reading through each student's personality, communication and learning styles, the respective educators are able to guide each student in their classes better. This is probably the next best solution, after individual coaching. This technique may prove to be rather time-consuming for educators but the benefits of enabling students to learn better in their classes far outweigh any inconveniences that may be caused. I believe that any educators who regard teaching as a calling rather than a job will be able to identify with this.

Understanding each student's personality in a class is paramount to being an effective educator in the classroom.

Sometimes you get startled into remembering that you live a certain lifestyle. And your friends ar

Sometimes you get startled into remembering that you live a certain lifestyle. And your friends are a certain 'kind'. Many people assume that most other people are like them - or they are more like them than different. It seems we tend to look for similarities (or differences) in others and sometimes we need a shock to the system to remind us just who we are, and what labels are used to describe us.

I feel a bit like a smuck for forgetting that I would be considered priviledged to some degree. Don't get me wrong, I got nothing handed down to me. In fact, when my family immigrated to Canada, we came with absolutely nothing and used social assistance including living in Ontario Housing. If you've never visited or lived in Ontario Housing, it's the pits. And dare I say it, the families I grew up with were not exactly the best influence. Luckily for me, even at that tender age, I knew better than to get into those other troubles and I'm extremely grateful for the assistance we got from the system. It gave us the opportunity that was needed in order to get to where we are today. We survived living on minimum wage and crawled out of this space. I worked well paying (read: boring) jobs during the summers to ensure I had money to get a University education. It was not without sacrifices, and I am well aware that many of my peers today would have no idea what that lifestyle was like to live in.

Today, I would now label us as middle-income with a house in the suburbs that the bank owns through our mega-mortgage just like our neighbours. We have post secondary school diplomas and certificates and would be considered professionals in middle-management. According to Census Canada, our family income would be well past average, and at a rate that surprises even me. Are there that many people in this country who make that little?!! I don't think our income is that high - certainly not compared to our friends, yet, here it is in black and white showing where we compare vs the rest of Canada. It befuddles me.

Looking at possessions, I see that we don't own any more (remember I have a 27 inch TV from the mid 1990's) than they do and yet, the stat is the stat. Ahhh, but friends and neighbours are not the masses and general population, now are they? If you guessed that all my friends have post secondary educations with mega-mortgages, and professionals in middle-management living in the Toronto area, then I'd say - yeah, that describes the majority of them. And to describe the rest, just add the words "or want to have a mega-mortgage eventually". Amongst that group, I'm average. The only difference is the group is above average.

I ventured outside my group recently when I went to court over a speeding ticket (more about that another time). As I stood in line dressed in business casual, I realized I looked much more like one of the lawyers or police officers, then I did, all the other average Joe's. It was clear, I was no longer in Kansas anymore as the saying goes. To some extent, it scared the bejeesus out of me seeing mullets on grown men in ripped, dirty jeans arguing with a clerk while police officers walked in and out through locked doors. I watched the security cameras and appreciated the constant wanderings of the officers and other law enforcement employees walking through. I figured if anything bad were to happen, there'd be a swarming of officers in no time flat and us bystanders would be taken care of easily and quickly. Oh yes. I thought that people in this room JUST might be crazy enough to do something stupid on camera and with cops everywhere.

Venturing out this far from my usual was scary for me, and I'm sure there was absolutely nothing to be afraid of. However, I know that emotions like fear, are just emotions, and you can not argue with them. My saving grace? Those mullets probably would be scared to death to come out to suburbia for fear of the crazy things people like me would do.
