I wasn't exactly sure what to put up here in response to Shanoah's post. I thought of putting up some conspiracy fnord movies and an anti-facism fnord radio guy that I like named Dave Emory. But I got to thinking about that, in light of the previous post. Discordians are all about conspiracy fnord, but it seems like any specific conspiracy fnord theory is like Demiurge playing three card monty, or rather thousand card monty: "Okay, who're the global masters? Keep yer eye on the Lady! Is it the Jews fnord? The corporations fnord? The global banks fnord? The liberals fnord? The conservatives fnord? The fascists fnord? The environmentalists fnord? The Masons fnord? The Illuminati fnord? The Christians fnord? The Muslims fnord? The Islamofascists fnord? The Communists fnord? The Republicans fnord? The Democrats fnord? The gays fnord? The humanists fnord? The satanists fnord? The blacks fnord? The whites fnord? The Mexicans fnord? The immigrants fnord? Place yer bet! Yer wrong!"

Well, if you know a little about religion fnord, you probably figured out what I am the minute your read "Demiurge". Yep, I'm a gnostic, sort of. This probably explains why Shanoah and I are such good friends and why this post will probably dovetail with his: Discordians and gnostics, in my opinion, go together hand-in-glove. It's all about the freedom, baby.

Unfortunately, I could only afford a quick look at some of the gnosticism movies on YouTube, and what I saw left me cold. So, unfortunately, ya'll're gonna have to do a little reading.

The first few links below are a good primer to Christian fnord gnosticism (and the only ones I'm comfortable with putting up, as I'm a little new to the gnosticism thing myself). The others'll yank the rug out from under your psyche and give a feel for the spiritual warfare to come.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/gnostic.htm: A good introduction to Christian fnord gnosticism, with a brief bit on history and beliefs, as well as an horrendously outdated links list.

http://www.gnosis.org/: This appears to be the site of the Gnostic Society of Los Angeles (unless I'm reading it wrong). A good place to go after the Religious Tolerance site. It also has a good primer as well as a huge library of online books, many of which look to be free. And free is always good. (Hard as hell to navigate in, though; just because they have divine wisdom doesn't mean they can put a Web site together, grumble grumble)

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06592a.htm: The Catholic fnord Encyclopedia's take on gnosticism. They're the guys who snuffed the Christian fnord Gnostics, so of course they don't have an agenda fnord. But you should get the other side's story, always. They've also got a lot of scholarship on this page - maybe a little too much for one page - which you'll want to read when you want some real meat.

Another looooooong 'un with lots of five-dollar words like "hermeneutics", and another that I haven't read (or even skimmed) fully. Looks to be more balanced than the Catholic fnord Encyclopedia, though, with lots of brain meat.

http://principiadiscordia.com/: If Discordians and gnostics are just one side of the same coin, then the Principia Discordia deserves a place in on any gnostic bookshelf. Its sister work, The Black Iron Prison, is especially valuable.

But it's at least as thick as any of those. Its co-author, Robert Anton Wilson, finally escaped this gravity well last year. No list of gnostic sites would be complete without him.

http://www.nozen.com/: A little Zen fnord Buddhism fnord koan-o-matic. Koans are the Zen fnord version of Christian fnord parables fnord, only more annoying. They also help free your mind from sticky thinking, which is the last thing a gnostic wants. A Zen fnord koan called "Three Pounds of Flax" was the inspiration for the flaxscrip in the Illuminatus! trilogy.

http://www.phildickiangnosticism.com/: The man who wrote A Scanner Darkly and came up with the term of the "black iron prison". No list of gnostic works would be complete without Phillip K. Dick somewhere, either.

http://reactor-core.org/: Reactor Core is a Christian fnord site. I stumbled across it and, after a quick read, decided to throw it up here. The Lady knows they have their own pet conspiracy fnord theories, albeit in new and exciting combinations. However, a Christian fnord site that describes the universe as a computer program and puts up two essays from Anton Lavey fnord in their online library can't be all bad.

Oh, and also remember the one thing that I took away from the five billion pages of the Illuminatus! trilogy: Trust nothing, especially what you read.

Specifically, I'm going to write "fnord" next to all the words that trigger a Pavlovian response in me - kinda tag them so my conscious mind is aware of them.

And the best thing is that Benjamin Franklin - the man generally credited with thinking up DST - did it as a joke. Really. Check this page out, as well as some of Franklin's methods to get people out of bed:

First. Let a tax be laid of a louis per window, on every window that is provided with shutters to keep out the light of the sun.

Second. Let the same salutary operation of police be made use of, to prevent our burning candles, that inclined us last winter to be more economical in burning wood; that is, let guards be placed in the shops of the wax and tallow chandlers, and no family be permitted to be supplied with more than one pound of candles per week.

Third. Let guards also be posted to stop all the coaches, &c. that would pass the streets after sunset, except those of physicians, surgeons, and midwives.

Fourth. Every morning, as soon as the sun rises, let all the bells in every church be set ringing; and if that is not sufficient?, let cannon be fired in every street, to wake the sluggards effectually, and make them open their eyes to see their true interest.

So yeah, I think we can all agree that Franklin was talking with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Now, granted, someone came up with a pretty good rationale for DST... in 1907. But I think we can all agree that artificial lighting has made at least a few strides since then. Too dark? Turn on an electric lamp or one of those newfangled gizmos whaddyacallem flashlights! That's it!

But we still jump forward and then jump back, and for reasons that no one really understands. It's almost Pavlovian.

Your neat thing today is a companion piece to the Principia Discordia, called The Black Iron Prison.  "Black iron prison" is a concept from Phillip K. Dick's VALIS trilogy - a concept of imprisonment so subtle that the prisoner doesn't know it exists. It's mental imprisonment. In my humble opinion, one of its manifestations is people turing their clocks backwards and forward for reasons they don't understand.

As Tim Boucher says:

Gnosticism generally asserts that the archons (which means literally “authorities”) are the masters and architects of this prison, and that their goal is to control us completely. But in a way, I think we decide to let them.

Mário Quintana explodiu o ego em zilhões de pedacinhos quando disse que "uma definição apenas define os definidores". Deu uns tapadas na cara do velho Choronzon, pode acreditar. Definições são reflexos das verdades que cada um de nós carrega – tijolos que constituem as muralhas do ego. Mas, nunca, definições são Verdadeiras, no sentido amplo da palavra com o "V" maiúsculo, pois são as visões de pessoas, grupos, religiões, etc., e não a coisa-em-si. Voltando ao Mário, o cara foi discordianista quando disse aquilo; comparem com o que diz o Principia Discordia (e se preparem pra um pouco de psico-metafísica):

Uma cultura é um grupo de pessoas com grades bastante similares. Através de uma janela nós vemos caos, e relacionamo-lo aos pontos na nossa grade, e assim o entendemos."

Definições, conceitos ou grades são quase a mesma coisa, num certo sentido, que é o que estamos analisando. E esses tais de preconceitos? Ora, são pré-conceitos: conceitos, ou definições, ou ainda grades, que se sustentam em... Nada! Não são validados por hipótese ou fato algum; em suma, podem ser chamados, em primeira análise, de crenças. Juntemos os fatores: a citação do Mário, do Principia, e o que pensei sobre preconceitos. Essas coisas são eventos formadores do ego, do eu (não levem muito pro lado freudiano, mas sim pensem no significado da palavra latina ego, que em verdade significa "eu"). Esse ego é nosso modo de ver, pensar e agir sobre o mundo exterior, ou o que imaginamos ser o mundo exterior: algo como a caverna do Sócrates, mas mais cruel.

Eu venho lendo e refletindo sobre algumas coisas relacionadas à desagregação do ego, algo que é extremamente interessante. Primeiro, porque é um auto-exame moral, filosófico e cultural. Depois, pois esse exame geralmente leva a conhecer as coisas ruins e boas sobre nós mesmos. O diferencial é que a real desagregação do ego se dá pela perda da moral, da identidade cultural e religiosa (ou irreligiosa), da visão de todas as possibilidades e o reconhecimento que todas são reais, falsas e absurdas. E não tenho certeza até onde isso é interessante, mas experiência pessoal é sempre interessante. Conhecer a si mesmo, como sugeria o oráculo da ilha de Delfos, exige escolher, e para isso, analisar o que se tem, e criar algo novo se não houver nada com que se identifique.

Dec apparently had a tendency to mass-mail his rants to unsuspecting victims. (Interestingly enough, this is also how the Principia Discordia was initially disseminated. Just one of those things that makes you go "Hmmmm...") According to WFMU's On The Download, a bunch of them got into the hands of Boyd "Doc" Britton, who was working at WZUU in Milwaukee, in 1985. A year later, after he'd moved on to Y-108 in Denver, he decided to record himself reading them. The result was...

Well, the result was that you gotta listen to them. You really really do.

I found five MP3s from Britton's original 41-minute recording recently while looking for music for my Myspace page (my my?), along with a recording of some young guys who went to see Dec while he was still alive. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to upload them to One Neat Thing a Day yet. But I can give you the link to WFMU's On the Download, where you can download them for yourself.

(Incidentally, you can also download a few of these from the Francis E. Dec Fan Club, too. But I like to blow smoke up WFMU's antenna as much as I can, as they kick the proverbial ass)

Queria discorrer sobre a humanidade, então recorri ao po. Pasto é o que surgiu diante de mim quando recorri à página 153, primeiro substantivo após a 23a palavra do capítulo 72 das Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas. Nenhum livro melhor para consultar quando o assunto é o ser humano.

Pasto sugere bois, ovelhas. Somos, de fato, apascentados por um sistema, muitas vezes cruelmente castigados por fugirmos da conduta do bando. Nossa ovelhada, conduzida por verdadeiros pastores (ironicamente, alguns até recebem este título), farta de se deleitar no capim barato, farta de seguir ordens que parecem vir de acéfalos, é conduzida numa lógica ridícula.

Ora, inegavelmente esse sistema é falho. Afinal, se o projetarmos ad infinito, verifica-se que os recursos naturais que sustentam a produção são escassos e esse argumento basta para quebrar toda a lógica da coisa, que é produzir mais (o que necessita dos recursos limitados) em menos tempo (o que diminui o tempo, também, da disponibilidade dos recursos).

Ah, mas isso é sabido por todos, ao menos todos aqueles que constituem o público-alvo da Cabala. Vamos atacar de maneira discordiana, agora...

O sistema, ou seja, o conjunto de códigos, leis, normas, é algo sistematizado. Sistematizar é normalizar, tornar normal, organizado, padronizado, uniformizado. O sistema, então, reduz os seres humanos ao estado de uni(ca)form(a), dessa forma conseguindo um maior controle sobre as coisas produzidas por estes seres, uma maior eficiência. Mas, a que custo? Ao custo da singularidade de cada um, e, portanto, da pluralidade da humanidade. Isso causa danos severos, pois aqueles que negam vestir o uniforme para servirem o sistema são vítimas de preconceito e rótulos.

Analise pela palavra: “pré-conceito” remete a algo pré-formado, pré-concebido, estabelecido. Exatamente como padrões, que são previsões de como as coisas devem ser para que estejam “corretas”, na ótica do sistema. Alguém que não se encaixa nisso já está previamente julgado pelo sistema; assim, alguém anti-social, retraído, esquisito, é vítima de preconceito e rotulações.

Justamente por negarem sua paridade com o sistema são marginalizados. Anônimos de outrora que hoje são famosos (ainda que em segmentos marginalizados da sociedade) como H. P. Lovecraft, que, em sua época, não teve quase nenhuma representatividade.

Ainda sobre a normalização: organizar é ir contra a entropia natural das coisas. É negar o caos. Nosso universo começou com uma baixa entropia, ou seja, muito “organizado”. A tendência é, obviamente, se desorganizar; ao contrário disso, tentamos ir contra o sentido natural das coisas. E admitam, isso é um erro.

E que ligação tudo isso tem com o pasto? O pasto é o cenário onde ocorre a normalização, sendo o pastor o agente normalizador, e o rebanho os normalizados. As “ovelhas negras” são, em sua maioria, os discordianos, os artistas marginalizados, os revolucionários. O pascigo é, ainda, o alimento e os recursos do sistema, que são escassos. Nessa lógica, os pastores (novamente, uma ironia) são os culpados pela má utilização do pasto, e, mais, pelas desilusões do rebanho e as dores dos marginalizados.

A humanidade e seu pasto estão num rumo doentio. Felizmente, temos o contrapeso do discordianismo, que nos permite ver as coisas de um prisma deveras interessante. Por isso, perpetuemos as críticas!

This is not really news, per se, it's been around for about a year now . . . but I've never posted anything about it on here, so I thought I probably should. Discovered by our old friend Dr.Jon amongst items in the John F. Kennedy archives . . . it is a wonderful discovery, if only to see how a work progresses over time, the PD in this first edition is both familiar and strange . . . I thrilled to see the word "fuck" in its contents: I'm low-brow like that much of the time.

That's right folks. The POEE | UK Resource Centre and our publishing sub-sect Synaptyclypse Generator have finally got our finger out of our asses and published the damned thing.

Here we are in 2007 (or YOLD 3173), (or 6006 YD - Ed.), forty-eight, or forty-nine years after Mal2 and Omar's Discordian revelations at the hands of the Goddess Eris. Synaptyclypse Generator is proud to present this special edition of the legendary counter-culture classic, the bible of Discordianism. We have spared no cabbage-power in preparing this wonderful hardback edition for your enjoyment and enlightenment. Illuminet disappeared, Loompanics have closed their doors and Ronin have released a mashed up paperback edition. We at Synaptyclypse Generator decided that this wasn't good enough. We wanted our Principia. The real Principia. And what's more, we wanted something special, we wanted it in hardback! Principia Discordia has been republished a number of times over the years, but not since 1976 has it been available to the general public in hardback format. So we took it upon ourselves to produce this edition. We have done the best we could have hoped to ensure a quality and cherishable version of Principia Discordia and hope you fall in love with the Principia Discordia all over again, just as we have.

For this edition, we have included Kerry W. Thornley's introduction to the 1991 Illuminet Press edition and Robert Anton Wilson's Loompanics Unlimited introduction. We include all the material from the last Loompanics printing and any odd bits left over from the Illuminet version. We have closing 'Outroductions' by none other than the Rev.Dr Jon Swabey of Apocrypha Discordia fame and 'crackpot historian,' Adam Gorightly, author of The Prankster and the Conspiracy, The Story of Kerry Thornley and How He Met Oswald and Inspired the Counterculture.
