PolishLinux has an interview with the KPackageKit developers. PackageKit is a abstraction layer over the different Linux package management tools. It is primarily designed to unify the graphical tools and provide a consistent distribution neutral framework for application developers to install add-ons as well. This project was initiated and continues to be maintained by Red Hat developer Richard Hughes who also wrote the initial GNOME frontend to it, called gpk-application. Multiple backends currently exist and it is the default for Fedora and Foresight Linux already. Other distributions including Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Mandriva, and Gentoo are actively participating in the development of different backends. A KDE interface has been under rapid development recently and just did a 1.0 release last week. This interview provides more details.

Posted by Tilia

Let me just start by saying that it's really effing difficult. It's like that first year of college, for people who didn't immediately join 8 campus clubs. You just kind of look around, knowing you should be having a blast, but feeling like your options are a.) walking around alone or b.) renting season 5 of 24 ... again.

And I'm not just talking about meeting people in a romantic sense, though that'd be nice too. I mean, I hate to say it, but my stint at the Scary Pub was really the best social facilitator I've had so far. I got a date out of that, a few nights in other pubs with people, and even that house party. But, alas, that job was just not worth the social perks.

So, here's the deal. I'm not content experiencing London sans new friends. I'm a very social person and I like to meet new people and have little adventures, since adventurous things tend to happen to me once I've put myself into the ballgame. And yeah ... a hookup or two wouldn't be bad either.

So today, being on a budget and all, I discovered London is Free, a website dedicated to things I can do without dishing out a ton of dough, because let's face it, this city is seriously expensive. I've drifted automatically to the film events, specifically the short film showcase that's listed, but there are some other things I want to check out too. Specifically, that book club in SoHo with the Vaudeville theme ... that sounds fantastically insane. I'm hoping straights are welcome, regardless of the clear theming.

So, soon, I'll be able to review a few free events here on the Meet-People-Meter, which I will soon devise. If the package my mom supposedly mailed me over a week ago would arrive, I could even take some pictures, since it includes my recently-repaired digital picturebox.

In other news, there's this gorgeous, Mr. Darcy-esque man who works at the far end of my office ... but I work with a bunch of glam-bots, girls-next-door, and other assortments of dream women, so chances are, that's not a very hopeful prospect, even though we did finally speak on Friday, and it was pretty flirtatious.

And also, paying my internet bill involves knocking on Lithuanian Guy's door ... and it's still fun, because he's still hot.

The U.S. Administration on Aging joins the Internal Revenue Service in reminding all Americans that October 15, 2008 is the deadline for retirees and disabled veterans to file an income tax return that will allow them to receive an economic stimulus payment this year. The Internal Revenue Service's latest estimate indicates there are as many as 4.3 million recipients of certain Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits who may be eligible for the economic stimulus payment but who have not yet claimed their stimulus payments. People must file an income tax return in order to receive an economic stimulus payment.

I’ve recently switched my laptop from Windows XP to Ubuntu (about 4 months ago) because of all

I've recently switched my laptop from Windows XP to Ubuntu (about 4 months ago) because of all of the great things I've been hearing about Linux and Ubuntu. When I first switched, I was weary about how complex it might be and what kind of challenges I might encounter trying to do common tasks. To be honest, if I didn't have a friend that knew how to run Linux via command line or the GUI, I would have abandoned my quest for Linux knowledge. Its not that Ubuntu was all that hard to use, it just that it was DIFFERENT.

Maybe this is just a sign of age (i'm only 22) or maybe I just grew too attached to XP. I'm guessing its the latter of the two. But once I got l the ittle things ironed out, like installing the correct flash package through synaptic package manager (I originally downloaded a flash package that blocked all flash objects on webpages, which pissed me off!), Ubuntu began to grow on me. For the record, I'm am still using XP on my XPS410 desktop mainly for compatibility and as a reference (I'm a computer tech).
It ran smoothly, quickly and rarely froze. Some of the features that I liked:

Graying out of windows

When a program freezes or takes longer to respond than normal, the window will turn gray. I find this to be a nice feature mainly because it lets you know that something is hung-up in the program. Whereas in Windows when you click something you and it takes a while to load, you're not sure whether it froze or is running slowly. And I know from experience if you try to click a frozen window it just whites out and you have a hell of a time closing it.

Synaptic Package Manager

This handy little tool pretty much allows you to download and install almost every program, plugin, etc... that is meant for Ubuntu. Its really simple, just open it up, search for what you want, download, and install. Its a pretty sweet deal!

FREE $$$$$

Everything is free! For you who do not know, Ubuntu can be downloaded free of charge here! Simply download the ISO file and burn it to a CD and viola! You're good to go.

If you're still weary about whether or not you want to make the switch to Ubuntu, you can try it out without installing it on your computer. Just put the Ubuntu CD into your computer and restart and boot from the CD. Ubuntu will then ask you for a language and whether or not you want to try it out or install it.

Dear J-

Dear J-

Once a clever fox learned how to dig under the neighboring farmer's fence. The farmer lost a few chickens until he sank some stones all around the footing. Later, the fox responded by digging longer tunnels, hiding the entrances and exits among bushes. Every tunnel he found, the farmer would plug with another stone, but there were always more tunnels than stones, always more hiding places, and chickens kept disappearing. The farm dog couldn't keep a watch over the entire grounds, and was prone to snoozing under the porch most days, at any rate; so the battle of stones and tunnels was waged until the farmer gave up on chickens and settled on raising potatoes instead. No dummy, that fox; he moved on to greener pastures, if you will, with loose gates and fence gaps.

I wonder how well the economic stimuli will work; so much of our business health is predicated on ever-increasing demand (they've gotta hate folks who stick by their 20-year-old TV sets and 12-year-old cars, not pointing the finger at the mirror here) for goods and services. If it's aimed at increasing liquidity so that we can keep borrowing more and more, isn't that what they've been blaming us for precipitating the crisis -- the free and easy credit daze? Without being too obvious, isn't it just perpetuating the cycle -- making more money availabe to keep on chasing a vicious spiral of spending and debt?

We've been told, we've been sold, in full-panic mode, that something needs to be done immediately. It keeps happening; we keep seeing a reactive response from our government, hasty solutions and patches -- Patriot Act, war on Iraq, financial bailout. And we're facing another four years of this?

Look who got a package today from grandma. She got a riding horse. She puts her feet into the bottom feet of the horse and then the front feet are stuffed and hang down. Then the straps come up and she is riding the horse. I think it will be going treat or treating this year. She also got a totally cool tutu. Which she is still wearing. I think it will take a lot of persuasion to get this thing off of her.

Some Latex editors (like WinEdt) internally convert your umlauts to Lamport's umlaut format, e.g. ä $latex \to$
\"a

Now, if your editor is not doing it automatically (like Vim :-) ), you basically have two possibilities

Use Lamport's umlaut format:
\"{}

Use a package that can handle umlauts and all characters having a code > 127

The inputenc package:

The inputenc package recognizes all characters that have an ascii code > 127 and hence is able to parse umlauts:

\usepackage[option]{inputenc}

The following options are available and have to be used depending on your operating system:

latin1/latin9: Most Unix system and VMS.

applemac/macce: Older Mac systems/current mac systems

ansinew: Used on Windows, similar to latin1.

cp437de: MSDOS.

cp850: OS/2 and with MSDOS, if the codepage IBM-850 is explicitely used.

utf8: Can be used on most systems (e.g. all newer Linux distributions).

Difference between latin1 and latin9:

The ISO latin9 character set replaces a few less commonly used characters with characters that gained importance recently. If you need the euro sign € or Caron (háček), which replace e.g. the broken vertical bar (¦) or encoded fractions.

President Bush said today that if the Senate does not pass the unpopular $700 billion Wall Street ba

President Bush said today that if the Senate does not pass the unpopular $700 billion Wall Street bailout bill, he will consider declaring martial law on Friday.

"I have decided that I may have to be the decider in this decision," Bush decided to tell reporters at the White House. "Democracy has so far failed to pass this important legislation, so a decision deciding in favor of it may be decided by me."

[caption id="attachment_1290" align="alignright" width="262" caption="If President Bush decides to declare martial law, the White House said he will most likely decide to create a monarchy system of government."][/caption]

The president said he will consider invoking Executive Order 66, which will prevent Congress from making any more decisions by leaving the deciding up to him. It will activate martial law and eliminate all public elections. Shares of Halliburton Corp. went up on the news.

"The American populace needs strong leadership to get this bailout law in place, because profits are at stake here," Bush declared. "And without profits, the country cannot move forward and stand on its own. The alternative to this only choice will not be successful. We must never mind the furthermore, to plead this is common sense."

Most Americans are opposed to bailing out Wall Street, despite the president's dire warnings about the consequences of doing nothing. Many disgusted Americans are planning to drop out of the economic system altogether if the bailout bill passes.

"Why should I work hard only to have my money confiscated and given to rich people on Wall Street?" asked Larry Johnson, a factory worker in Detroit, Michigan. "Screw it. If this bailout passes, I'm going to go live with the Amish. I'll grow my own food, make my own clothes and give up electricity and hot water. No more credit cards. No more taxes to pay."

President Bush, who is aware that Americans are leaning toward a less modern and less slave-like existence, warned them against leaving America's corporate-controlled economic system.

"Collectivating on farms and living peaceably without debt might seem like the answer, but it isn't," he said. "That's socialism, and it will fail. That's why I urge my fellow Americans to support the Wall Street bailout package with their tax money, so we can preserve our free markets and capitalism."

An anonymous reader writes "According to a research report out of UCLA, released this morning, NVidia's high-lead bump packaging could last anywhere from 1/10th to 1/100th as long as AMD's advanced eutectic bump approach. (TG Daily has picked up the claim.) NVidia is currently in the midst of a $200M recall of bad GPUs, and the report suggests that the issue could be much deeper than NVidia's PR department would have us believe." The report lends credence to the strident claims of the Inquirer's Charlie Demerjian, which we discussed a month back.

(Why spend a fortune going to some university, beauty college or ad school? Here’s everything you need to know about getting a great job in advertising. Kindly make your tuition checks payable to Patrick Scullin.)

Next to dying a slow, painful, miserable death while "MacArthur Park" is playing on the radio, hunting for a job has to be one of the most traumatic events we humans ever face.

Because changing jobs is always frightening, let’s discuss the stages of job hunting in as intellectual a fashion as we can muster on short notice.

Stage one: "I've got to get out of this hellhole."

How can you tell you’re in a go-nowhere job? Be on the lookout for little signals, like a boss who continually tells you, "You’re in a go-nowhere job, pal, and as long as I’m in charge, I'll see to it your genius is squashed like a fat mosquito hitting a ‘67 Buick going 120 mph!"

Or, a representative from local Lumberjack’s Union who pleads with you to stop generating ideas. "For God’s sake, man," he says with tears welling-up in his eyes, "how many more Foamcore trees must we senselessly slaughter before you’ll quit this madness? Can’t you see, you numbskull, you’re in a go-nowhere job?"

Whatever drives you to the conclusion it’s time to go, it’s time to get on to stage two of the job hunt: "Getting the ol’ book out and about."

When it’s all said and done, it doesn’t matter if you’re Lee Clow or Joe Blow, we all live and die by our work. Of course, Clow’s got the better reel, but he can’t touch Blow’s print or flash banners work, no sir.

[caption id="attachment_468" align="alignleft" width="112" caption="Yours? Mine? Ours."][/caption]

The best way to put together a terrific portfolio is to collect samples of the very best work. Conservative people believe the work should be restricted only to those pieces that you yourself actually created, while the more liberal approach embraces the idea that anything created by one of your own species is fair game for inclusion into your book. Whatever. The main thing is to put together items that can fit into a portfolio case (which generally restricts the inclusion of actual-size billboard samples).

Many job hunters wonder if they should have headhunters working on their behalf? Yes, by all means! How else can you find out about those incredible opportunities with "the next Fallon" (which happens to be in Texarkana of all places) or "the great creative revolution happening over at Lackluster, Mediocrity & Snores."

Do whatever it takes to get your book seen by whomever, whenever in wherever. As they say in the penguin exhibit at Hank's Appliance Repair Shop, 'You can't win the lottery if you don't have a ticket–– preferably the winning ticket.'

Once the potential agency has seen your book, they’ll want to see the person who owns it. Which brings us to stage three of snagging the big job: "The Meet & Greet."

Most creative people despise interviewing because it generally involves answering tough questions like: "Where do you see yourself in 10 years, and if you are a time traveller, please also give me the name of the winning horse in the Kentucky Derby and the Super Bowl and World Series Champs."

"Who was known as 'The Perky President', and what was the name of his Secretary of Defense?"

"If two trains leave Chicago, one going 45 miles per hour and the other getting 2.45 miles per gallon of diesel fuel, which one will have the higher trade-in value?"

"What is your creative philosophy, and how does it mesh with the notion of existentialism?"

"You want coffee, a Coke, or something? Remember, there is only one right answer."

The secret to successful interviewing is to interview right back at them. When they ask a question, it's no time to play defense–– fire one back. Here’s a sample from an interview I had back in ‘95:

HE: So, Patrick, tell me about yourself.

ME: Hey, where you’d get the cool picture of the ugly lady with the dorky kids? That's hilarious, man!

HE: This picture? That’s, uh, that’s a picture of my family.

ME: Oh, uh, really? Well, aren’t they the handsome bunch! I don’t suppose you work many late nights, no, sirree––not with a great gaggle of good lookers like that to get home to...

For some reason, I didn’t get that particular job. They were looking for someone with more package goods experience or something.

Another interviewing secret is not to tell them about those voices that only you can hear. Because in a funny way, many people find it hard to believe pets and inanimate objects have chosen you as their primary communication vehicle. These people may be jealous and may not want to hear about the upcoming swift sword of justice you will soon be delivering at their command. Evil doers must pay!

Providing they love you and your work, you’re on to stage four of scoring your dream ad job: "Negotiating the Package."

Me, I’m old fashioned, so I generally think paychecks are a nice perk. With a little clever negotiating on your part, maybe you can swing one of these "my time for your money" arrangements, meaning you'll get paychecks on a fairly regular basis. Pretty sweet, eh?

Some other niceties to negotiate are free electricity, Christmas day off, four tons of gold bouillon and an 18 pack of Knox Beef Bullion (it's like drinking a steer). Usually you’ll get three out of the four; most employers are sticklers about working on Christmas day. Go ahead and take the job because even if it does turn out to be another hellhole, soon enough a headhunter will call telling you about nirvana in Texarkana.

Happy hunting, and remember pets and inanimate objects are watching so be good.

For a few hours I was trying to understand why my simple BPEL process wasn't working. I was using NetBeans IDE 6.1 (Build 200809100101). My simple BPEL process used two external partner links which were web services exposed by an EJB Module. Looking at the messy exception messages that Glassfish shows it was kind of hard to understand the issue. Everything seamed to be fine, building went smoothly and the deployment on a Composite Application as well, but the test always failed. The test failure wasn't due to the fact that the contents of the output file and the file whose name contains the timestamp of the moment when the test was executed were different, because both of the files reported an error message (this is in fact a bug in NetBeans). I couldn't understand why I could never obtain the desired results. Trying different things I found out that if I put the web services which acted like partner links in the BPEL process into different packages in the EJB Module, everything worked fine!! I think this was due to the fact that some of the output types used in the two web services were the same (for example java.lang.Exception) and maybe the BPEL schema importer couldn't tell between the two. I don't know, the important thing is that this seems to be yet another bug in the NetBeans platform. I resolved the problem with some simple refactoring, putting the two different web services into two different packages.
