]]> <![CDATA[Rockin']]> http://xtremegaming.wordpress.com/?p=300 Sat, 11 Oct 2008 00:26:07 +0000 spectre2689 http://xtremegaming.pt-br.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/rockin/ As I'm sure all of you remember, the last MP3 player I had the displeasure of reviewing was the iTouch, and in a grand (and smudgy) display of mediocrity, it almost entirely failed to impress me.  iriver's SPINN, on the other hand, sends chills of anticipation down my spine every time I lay eyes on it.  Unfortunately, XTG doesn't sign my paycheques, and the company that does doesn't seem to understand my need for the Spinn, so instead I've been spending my time playing with things that are free, such as RockBox.

RockBox, for those of you who are unaware, is an open-source, third-party firmware for a number of older DAPs ranging from high-quality players from iriver and Archos to the first few generations of Apple's iPods.  In most cases, it will act as a substitute for the original firmware (with my player, it has a bootloader, but I'm not sure if this is the case for others) and vastly improve the functionality of whatever it's being applied to.  Think Midas touch, except instead of Midas, we have RockBox, and instead of gold, everything it touches turns to awesome.

With the release of 3.0 (finally), a lot of bugs and compatibility issues have been ironed out, or at least enough to come out with a proper release.  Having never been able to get previous builds of RockBox to work with my iriver H10; the H10's basic firmware was decent enough that I never bothered myself with figuring out why it wouldn't boot RockBox.  Now, though, I have an iriver H320, which despite being the H10's predecessor, gave me unimaginable firmware related headaches.

RockBox's installation procedure is fairly straightforward.  A non-US firmware version needs to be loaded on the iriver*, as well as the system files for RockBox itself.  The bootloader then patches a vendor provided firmware upgrade so that RockBox can be booted into.  If that all seems too much for you, the fine programmers over at RockBox provide a pretty simple GUI-based installation utility to make everything a whole lot easier.  On the H320, I can still get into the original firmware by holding the record button as I turn it on, and that also means that I can always flash the player back to a firmware version that RockBox hasn't latched itself to.

*Note that flashing to a non-US firmware version on iriver players will disable the ability to play DRM protected music files, i.e. music files that you don't want in the first place.

The first thing I noticed upon booting into RockBox was the sleek, minimalist menu system.  The firmware's visual design is top-notch, and if it doesn't suit your needs even then, more themes can be downloaded right on to the player; same thing goes for fonts.  The menu layout is intuitive, and does what you'd expect it to do when a given button on the player is pressed.

The settings menus can be slightly overwhelming, but I had my player set up the way I wanted it within a few minutes of buggering.  In particular, there are display settings, more display settings, sound settings, equalizer settings, settings that tell your player how to react, settings that tell your player when to react, settings that tell your player to react when you tell it to react, and settings for the sandwich you can tell it to have your wife make you.  Okay, I lied about the last one, but it's not perfect.

I only have two quips with it right now, the first that it is often slow to respond to input.  Under some circumstances, the player will simply take a few extra seconds to do what you tell it to do, but I'll count that as one of the trade-offs of having firmware that actually does what I want it to do.  My second complaint is that the player often doesn't know just how much battery life it has.  On a full charge (or what I'm assuming is a full charge), RockBox thinks it only has roughly half of it's battery life left.  Between 9% and 8% battery life remaining will also give me the better part of two hours of play time.  Though I'm pretty sure there's a setting I can change for that.

All in all, if you have an older DAP lying around and don't want to get rid of it just yet, I would strongly recommend checking out whether or not RockBox has an offering for you.  It will more than likely breathe some new life back into that old, fossilizing player of yours.  Speaking of which, I have an old iPod Nano lying around here somewhere that I have to get around to making functional.

New Camera Alert!

My Oly C4000z still works great, but after waiting two years and watching the price on the Oly SP-560uz drop from NIS4000 to just over NIS1200, I jumped at the chance to finally have a camera with both image stabilization and a better zoom. The ad was in the newspaper Wednesday morning, at which point I stopped my cooking for the  pre-Yom Kippur meal and called our local computer shop, Bug, to see if they had it in stock. They did, exactly one. I raced there. The salesperson at Bug was all disdainful about the camera, but I figure most people are pretty attached to the brand of camera they use. (Either that or he was trying to talk me out of buying it so he could. :-) )

I must admit this camera has more bells and whistles than I'll ever use and I do wish the "Advanced" manual that came on the accompanying CD was, well, a little more advanced (it explains what the functions do, but not why). The "Auto" mode is now for the completely clueless, you can't adjust even the ISO or white balance settings. If you want to do that, you have to switch to "P" mode for, what exactly? (shrug)

The only true downside was discovering that an Olympus-brand xD card wasn't supplied with the camera. There was a very generous 2G Fuji xD card included. But like all the Oly cameras, if you want to access certain functions, like panorama shots, you need the Oly card, which has just been added to my Amazon WishList.

Off to virtually thumb through the manual and hoping tonight will bring my first nightime shots with the new camera. Prepare for the coming Deluge on Flickr.

I have another shoot with them to be released in November for an editorial spread for the one and only AP Magazine. The people at Interscope Records are just amazing, they treat everyone around them like family, especially the band. There was a lot of love in the room, and nothing makes a shoot better than working for people you believe in. AAR is amazing, they were down for anything at any moment. It was a total dream.

You can find the pictures for Interscope circulating around magazines and other promotional material, and you can find the international Olympus ads everywhere their audio is sold and in most Guitar Centers. Olympus was also a true class act, they are extremely positive people that are super accommodating and care so much about the band and about Interscope, and everyone involved, I was beyond impressed with them as individuals and as a collective.

The day was wild with splitting shooting between the guys filming their commercial for Nike's human race, not to mention 6 setups in studio and 2 more on location in a 6 hour period made this one heck of an adventure. I shoot extremely quickly to begin with, and I rarely stay on a setup for more than 15 minutes especially with this kind of a schedule. My assistants main job is maintaining the stop watch, and giving me 5 minute marks, until we get down to 3min-2min-next set change. Everyone on this team was amazing, especially the guys from Ohio, they are hysterical and total sweethearts. The quote of the day.. "That's what she said."

Infatti i primi modelli o prototipi che lo utilizzano sono stati presentati in quell'occasione.
Lo standard è un'estensione del Four Thirds, standard per fotocamere digitali, sottoscritto da numerosi costruttori, fra cui anche Fuji e Kodak, ma in realtà sviluppato solo da Olympus e Panasonic.

L'obiettivo di questo standard, basato su un sensore di dimensioni 18x13,5, era quello di realizzare degli apparecchi e degli obiettivi di ingombro e peso più ridotto di quello delle reflex basate sullo standard del formato a pellicola 35 mm. Olympus in particolare non avendo un backgroud di fotocamere e obiettivi autofocus, non aveva alcun motivo di sviluppare delle macchine compatibili con quanto fatto prima (il sistema OM, non autofocus, risale agli anni 70). In realtà il risultato è stato raggiunto solo parzialmente perchè le dimensioni dei corpi macchina e degli obiettivi di Olympus, ma anche di Panasonic, sonoridotte ma non di una percentuale tale da fare una differenza sensibile nell'uso, se confrontate con quelle di analoghe reflex della concorrenza. In compenso l'aver adottato un sensore di dimensioni così ridotte comporta degli svantaggi per la resa alle alte sensibilità che presenta un rumore elevato e l'impossibilità di realizzare reflex full frame ora che il mercato si sta evolvendo in questo senso. Un vantaggio si ha invece nell'uso con i teleobiettivi con i quali dato il fattore moltiplicativo di 2 tipico del formato è possibile ottenere ingrandimenti notevoli con obiettivi relativamente piccoli e leggeri.
Per superare alcune limitazioni del formato Four Thirds e per creare una nuova fascia di mercato Olympus e Panasonic hanno presentato il nuovo formato Micro Four Thirds. Questo si basa sul Fourd Thirds, ma non prevede l'utilizzo dello specchio reflex per il mirino. Al suo posto è previsto un mirino elettronico. Ciò consente di ridurre notevolmente lo spessore del corpo macchina (vedi figura),

oppure compatte tascabili, ma con obiettivi intercambiabili e soprattutto con una qualità d'immagine nettamente superiore. Anche gli obiettivi saranno meno ingombranti e più leggeri, infatti il diametro della flangia d'innesto è più ridotto ,

quindi si potranno avere dei sistemi fotografici flessibili, ma di peso e ingombro (e costo?) ridotti, facili da portare in giro anche da chi incomincia a sentire il peso dell'attrezzatura (ne conosco qualcuno). Lo standard Micro Four Thirds garantisce la piena compatibilità con il precedente Four Thirds per quanto riguarda gli obiettivi: infatti gli obiettivi Forur Thirds potranno essere montati sui corpi Micro tramite un'apposito adattatore. Ovviamente non è possibile il contrario.

In Photokina è stato presentato il primo modello prodotto da Panasonic, la G1, che assomiglia ad una classica reflex, con ingombro ridotto, e un prototipo di Olympus per una compatta tascabile. Inoltre Panasonic ha presentato un'estensione dello standard per produrre anche un video Full HD e un prototipo di una G1 HD.
Indubbiamente lo standard Micro Four Thirds è molto interessante e i suoi sviluppi futuri potranno essere notevoli. Di positivo c'è la possibilità di poter finalmente vedere delle compatte con una qualità d'immagine decente alle alte sensibilità. Bisognerà invece vedere come reagiranno gli utenti, abituati ad un mirino ottico, ad utilizzarne uno elettronico. Ma credo che questo potrebbe essere un problema di chi fotografa con le reflex da tempo, i nuovi fotografi saranno entusiasti del mirino elettronico (anche se secondo me quello ottico è insostituibile).

Che la nuova area di mercato delle macchine con mirino elettronico ed obiettivi intercambiabili lo prova anche il fatto che, una settimana dopo Olympus e Panasonic, anche Samsung ha annunciato di avere intenzione di sviluppare un sistema di questo tipo, basato però sul sensore APS. ne riparleremo.

Alla photokina 2008, Panasonic e Olympus Imaging, hanno presentato una interessante nuova tecnologia il Micro Quattro Terzi. Tecnologia attorno alla quale è nata la LUMIX DMC-G1. Macchina compatta con lenti intercambiabili di diametro inferiore, ma compatibili tramite un anello adattatore con gli obiettivi 4:3 standard. La vera rivoluzione in realtà è il fatto che questa macchina nasce senza specchio, permettendo una riduzione delle dimensioni complessive e del peso del corpo macchina. Il mirino ottico contiene un visore ad alta risoluzione elettronico, quindi con funzione "live view" permanente, senza parti meccaniche in movimento. Questa piccola rivoluzione, se in futuro fosse trasportata sulle reflex, permetterebbe semplificazioni costruttive e maggiore velocità di scatto non essendoci parti fisiche in movimento.

Questa la comunicazione sul sito ufficiale di Panasonic:

"Il nuovo standard Micro Quattro Terzi aumenta i benefici del sistema Quattro Terzi, consentendo la realizzazione di ottiche intercambiabili per fotocamere di peso e dimensioni notevolmente ridotti. I termini dell’accordo tra le due aziende prevedono la realizzazione congiunta di obiettivi intercambiabili sempre più leggeri e compatti per le fotocamere digitali.

Insieme alla gamma di prodotti già esistenti con il sistema Quattro Terzi, la nuova gamma del sistema Micro Quattro Terzi permetterà all'utente finale di sfruttare al meglio le prestazioni delle ottiche intercambiabili per fotocamere digitali.

Le principali differenze tra il sistema standard Quattro Terzi e il nuovo sistema Micro Quattro Terzi sono:

]]> <![CDATA[The End of Summer (?)]]> http://bohemiansuburbia.wordpress.com/?p=36 Tue, 07 Oct 2008 20:40:31 +0000 bohemiansuburbia http://bohemiansuburbia.pt-br.wordpress.com/2008/10/07/the-end-of-summer/ It happens every year.  One day, it just gets chilly and regular trips to the beach are over for the summer.  We begin to enjoy the fall air, the open windows at night and we trade in the flip flops for boots and shoes again.  Summer is over, sigh, boo hoo.  But then a few weeks into the new fall weather we get one last breath of warm weather and we rush back to the beloved beach and soak it all in one last time.   Until late December early January that is.   Inevitably we get unusually warm temperatures a day or two during this period and this is when we bundle up and go to the beach and take photos of ourselves frolicking at the beach in the middle of winter.  There are so many of these photos stashed away, even a home movie of New Year's Day with friends at the beach in 2005.   We that are fortunate enough to live so close to the beach never really give it up for the summer at all.

 

Well, I'm off to find something cool to photograph.  It's kind of like being sort of hungry, but I don't want the usual, I want something...different.  When I find it, I'll post it.

The zoom mechanism in the camera, an Olympus C40-40 that's about seven years old, started to make grinding noises some weeks back but it kept operating so I didn't worry too much.

Next, the right-arrow button on the navigation panel on the back stopped working.

It's used a lot to scroll around the various settings, but I can just about manage most of the time—although I can't move the white balance off auto and I won't be able to reset the clock.

Now, though, the camera is losing images during the upload process.

Previews of the images come through to the computer, but when the upload starts the computer hangs and the camera deletes the images on its memory card.

As I've not changed any software for a couple of months, I think the finger is pointing very firmly at the camera.

I've managed to upload a few images that I've taken in the past few days, but about two-thirds were erased.

I can't see any way of replacing the camera any time soon, so digital photography is going to be somewhat hit and miss.

I'm not too worried about family photos as I still have quite a good film SLR camera and can return to using that, but it's probable the number of photographs posted here will fall.

Unless, of course, my plan to dismantle and clean the camera pays off...

I was reading an article in Pop Photo The Photographer's Guide to the Eye they interviewed this scientist (Science Papers)who said

"In top-down, goal-driven attentional mode, we move our eyes 3 to 5 times per second, about 200,000 times per day. In bottom-up, we don't consciously move our eyes, but we see 10 times faster."

Then he compared the Top Down mode with the artist Thomas Kincaid

Of course every photographer most likely spends much more time thinking Top down as a humans window to the bottom up is very small.  The real artist can get in touch with the unmediated experience of reality and represent it.  The Scientist Bottom up example of an artist is the late Robert Rauschenburg

So it would seem that that would support the need for simple cameras that can be used intuitively.  This is much easier now than in the past because photographs are just about free. But the camera is still a pretty primitive digital instrument.  It won't be to long till the sensor is more sensitive then the eye (it is already in may respects) and is able to produce a resolution and detail that could be like looking into a mirror. I can't wait for that but in the meantime I always want me photos to show something people usually don't see eve if it is only altered perspective.  The continuing improvement of cameras will only add more possibilities to do this in more amazing ways.

機種は OLYMPUS E-410。現行機種は E-420 なので一代前の機種になりますが、訳あって新品を格安で手に入れる機会があったので購入してしまいました。
E-420 に比べると液晶モニターが小さかったり、画像処理エンジンや機能面で劣る面があるとのことですが、ビギナーの練習機にはこれで充分と自分に言い聞かせています。

今日は早朝から秦野、丹沢方面にドライブをかねて被写体を探しに出かけましたが、なかなかこれというものに出会えなかっったので、午後から愚息を連れて県立相模原公園に被写体を求めに行きました。
ところが、公園の駐車場に着く頃になって空には雲が出始め、雨もパラパラ落ちてくる始末。
見頃の花も少ないので、公園内にある温室「かながわグリーンハウス」の花を撮影することにしました。

久しぶりにファインダーを覗いて撮影しましたが、初めてのデジ一で取り回しもなんだかぎこちなく、セッティングもままなりません。でも、コンデジにはないAFの合焦の早さや、「パシャ」というミラーアップの音は堪えられません。

Olympus LS-10: Der Test

Wenn eine Marke wie Olympus – die ja sonst stark bei Kameras angesiedelt ist – ein Gerät auf dem Audio Markt lanciert, dann erhalten wir den LS-10 – ein portables, digitales Aufnahmegerät, dass bereit ist in neue Bereiche vorzudringen.

Viele in Audio spezialisierte Hersteller haben in der letzten Zeit portable Aufnahmegeräte herausgebracht – darunter Marantz oder Nagra, aber auch erschwinglichere Modelle von M-Audio, Edirol und Zoom. Es gibt etwas für jedermann und vor allem jedes Budget. Olympus ist also damit in einen Markt vorgestossen, der bereits von manch anderem bearbeitet wurde. Dennoch versucht Olympus von seiner in der Fotografie erworbenen Erfahrung Gebrauch zu machen um eine eigene Nische in der Audio Welt zu finden.

Auf den ersten Blick hat der LS-10 sehr interessante Spezifikationen – urteilt für Euch selber:

Zwei Elektret Mikrofone
Ein grosser Bildschirm mit beleuchtetem Hintergrund
2GB eingebaute Flash Memory
Ein SD, SDHC Karten Lesegerät
Schnelles Encodieren in MP3 oder WMA
Aufnahmen bis zu 96kHZ

Dazu noch ein schönes, professionelles Design und eine Konstruktion, die Qualität ausstrahlt. Zusammen ergibt dies ein schönes, kleines Aufnahmegerät. Als ich das Gerät in die Hand nahm hatte ich sofort das Gefühl von einem soliden und robusten Gerät: Olympus hat hier definitiv sein Know-How ausgespielt. Dies ist ganz klar ein anderes Niveau als dass es Zoom oder Edirol zu bieten haben. Man kann den LS-10 wahrscheinlich nicht überall mit hinnehmen, da er doch ein wenig mehr als ein paar seiner Konkurrenten wiegt (165 Gramm, inkl. Batterien). Aber mal schauen, ob der LS-10 auch was taugt.

Spezifikationen

Mit dem LS-10 kann man in drei verschiedenen Formaten aufnehmen: Lineare PCM (WAV Files ohne Verlust von Klanginformationen, aber relativ platzsparend), MP3 (komprimiertes Format) und WMA (auch ein von Microsoft komprimiertes Format). Das erste Format lässt eine Sampling Rate von 96 kHz 24-bit zu, was grossartig für fertige Aufnahmen, aber völlig übertrieben für Notizen wäre. Das MP3 Format (128 Kbps bis 320 Kbps) spart eine Menge Platz und das WMA Format (64 Kbps bis 160 Kbps) noch mehr. Mit einem eingebauten Speicher von 2 GB kann man bis zu 3h in WAV 44.1 kHz / 16 bits, 17h45min in MP3 256Kbps, oder 69h35min in 64Kbps aufnehmen! Das ist schon eine ordentliche Aufnahmezeit – speziell wenn eine SD HC Karte hinzunimmt (bis zu 8 GB), was die Aufnahmezeit verfünffacht.

Der LS-10 gibt an bis zu 16 Stunden in 44.1 kHz WAV/16bits aufnehmen und 35 Stunden abspielen zu können. Wenn man bedenkt, dass dafür 2 AA Batterien genügen – die man auch leicht in seiner Hosentasche mitnehmen kann – dann kann man sicher sagen, dass sich dieses Gerät für lange Aufnahmen eignet, ohne dass man die Daten auf den Computer laden, oder die Batterien zwischendurch laden muss.

Bei den Ein- und Ausgängen gibt es einen Mini-Headphone-Jack, einen Mini-Jack Mikrofon-Eingang (mit 'Plug-In' Stromversorgung und einer Impedanz von 2 Ohm) und einen Mini-Jack Line-Input. Es wäre schön gewesen einen oder zwei XLR Eingänge zu haben (wie der Zoom H4) um die Einsetzbarkeit des LS-10 zu erweitern, aber es können nur Mikrofone verwendet werden, wie sie auch bei Aufnahmen mit MiniDisc benutzt werden. Beispiele für die Mikrofone von Olympus sind: ME30W, ME15S, ME-15, ME-52W, ME-12.

Schauen wir uns nun die Eigenschaften ein wenig genauer an.

Features

Der LS-10 wird mit dem Schalter aufgestartet, der auch die 'Hold'-Funktion inne hält. Nach dem Einschalten (das nur etwa 2-3 Sekunden dauert) kann man sich sehr schnell zurecht finden. Die Hauptfunktionen liegen direkt unter dem Daumen: ein Play/Ok, Next/Previous, Up/Down, Stop, Erase und ein Aufnahme Knopf. Drückt man auf letzteren so fängt die Aufnahme nicht einfach an, sondern man erhält die Möglichkeit den Pegel gezielt einzustellen. Drückt man den Knopf ein zweites Mal beginnt schliesslich die Aufnahme. Einfacher geht es nicht. Man kann sich das aufgenommene Material mit den Kopfhörern oder via der eingebauten Lautsprecher anhören. Man kann das Material sogar während der Aufnahme anhören – aber nur mit den Kopfhörern, da es durch die Lautsprecher zu Rückkoppelungen kommen würde.

Wenn die Klangquelle zu laut ist, dann kann man die Empfindlichkeit der Mikrofone mittels eines auf der Seite angebrachten Schalters verringern. Zudem kann ein Low-Cut Filter während der Aufnahme angewendet werden. Man sollte aber dabei beachten, dass die eingebauten Mikrofone nicht unter 70 Herz gehen – was diese Funktion ein wenig unnütz macht.

Unter den Hauptschaltern befinden sich vier weitere Knöpfe: 'List' öffnet den Ordner mit allen Files, durch die man dann per Up/Down und Left/Right suchen kann. Für regelmässige Anwender von digitalen Geräten geht dies ziemlich intuitiv von statten. Der 'Menü' Knopf bringt einen in die Einstellungen des LS-10: Reverb einschalten, Sampling Rate auswählen, das File Format bestimmen, usw. Die Funktionen bleiben alle sehr logisch und einfach verständlich. Der 'A-B' Knopf ermöglicht es die Wiederholung einer Passage oder einer ganzen Aufnahme einzustellen – sehr nützlich für Musiker, die ein bestimmtes Segment für Übungszwecke wiederholt haben möchten. Schliesslich gibt es noch einen 'fn (Function)' Knopf, der frei zuweisbar ist. So kann man zum Beispiel damit schnell das Reverb ein- oder ausschalten. Sehr praktisch!

Was für eine Figur macht das Gerät nun in der Praxis?


In der Anwendung

Das grosse beleuchtete Display hat den Vorteil auf einen Blick eine grosse Anzahl an Informationen anzuzeigen. Dies kann als erstes mal ein wenig einschüchternd sein, erweist sich aber schnell als äusserst vorteilhaft. Man wird sehr schnell die grossen Pegelanzeigen, das schnelle Aufstarten und die ergonomisch angelegten Tasten zu schätzen lernen. Ein Nachteil ist allerdings, dass man aufgenommene Files nicht mehr umbenennen kann: ein 'LS100003.WAV' sagt viel weniger als 'killer_riff.wav' aus. Hoffentlich wird da ein Firmware Update folgen um dieses kleine Problem zu beheben. Dasselbe gilt für Ordner. Es gibt fünf Stück und diese können weder umbenannt noch gelöscht werden – auch das Hinzufügen von neuen Ordnern ist nicht möglich. Die gesamte Architektur ist starr und das ist wirklich schade. Es gibt einen Ordner mit dem Namen 'Music' um MP3 Files zu speichern und organisieren – das LS-10 kann also als Musik-Abspielgerät benutzt werden. Jedoch ist dafür die Steuerung weitaus nicht so gut wie bei iPods und anderen digitalen Abspielgeräten. Man kann keine Playlists erstellen oder die Songs mit Tags versehen. Um diese 'Nachteile' Sektion noch abzurunden sollten hier noch die zwei Volumen Knöpfe erwähnt werden, die schon ein wenig fummelig ausgefallen sind und vor allem für grössere Finger ein Hindernis darstellen. Es ist auch traurig, dass man das Gerät auf ein Stativ, nicht aber auf einen Mikrofonständer montieren kann. Hier ist wohl der Fotografie Hintergrund etwas zu stark nach vorne getreten.

Trotz diesen kleinen Schwächen ist der LS-10 immer noch sehr effizient einsetzbar und macht Spass in der Anwendung. Es tut was man von ihm möchte – dies sehr schnell. Es ist die ultimative Waffe für Komponisten, die jederzeit eine Idee aufnehmen können möchten.

Die Verbindung mit dem Computer passiert ohne Probleme via mini USB: das LS-10 wird sofort erkannt – Treiber sind nicht benötigt. Olympus hatte zudem die grossartige Idee Cubase LE 4 beizulegen (kompatibel mit PC und Mac), mit dem man die Aufnahmen weiter verarbeiten kann. Dies ist ein grosses Plus wenn man die Qualität und den Preis dieser Software beachtet.

Der Klang

Im grossen und ganzen ist die Qualität der integrierten Mikrofone gut – ihre Limitierung in den tiefen Frequenzen rührt hauptsächlich von der Grösse der Kapseln und Ausrichtung. Bislang haben Hersteller bei Geräten dieser Grösse noch nichts besseres zustande gebracht. Also ist es das Beste mit diesem Gerät keine Aufnahmen zu machen, die in den Frequenzen unter 80 Hz noch relevante Informationen liefern. Für Stimmen und Akustik Gitarren war das LS-10 jedoch über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Während der Aufnahme sollte man es jedoch immer auf einem Ständer montieren, um Nebengeräusche zu vermeiden. Der 90° Winkel zwischen den zwei Mikrofonen liefert ein gutes Stereobild und man hat die Möglichkeit via der 'Zoom Mic' Funkton diesen Richtwinkel einzuengen und auf ein bestimmtes zu Konzentrieren. Man sollte den voreingestellten Aufnahmepegel vor jeder Aufnahme prüfen, um das beste Resultat zu erzeugen. Ein integrierter Limiter kann einem schon mal den Tag retten indem er ungewollte 'Peaks' auslässt und somit Verzerrungen verhindert.

Die beiden mitgelieferten Schaumstoff-Abdeckungen für die Mikrofone sind von grossem Nutzen wenn man das Gerät mal an einem windigen Tag nach draussen nimmt. Auch das integrierte Reverb kann beim Abspielen von Aufnahmen sehr nützlich sind – es gibt 4 verschiedene Hall arten: Studio, Club, Hall, Dome. Die 'Euphonix' Funktion wirkt wie ein Kompressor und bringt während des Abspielens Sounds mit tiefem Pegel nach vorne.

Man erhält also ein qualitativ sehr gutes Aufnahmegerät, das aber natürlich nicht das gute alte dynamische Mikrofon auf dem Mikrofonständer ersetzen wird. Aber es liefert in vielen Situationen gute Dienste und wird seinen Weg in die Taschen vieler Aufnahme-Wütiger finden. Um eine Vorstellung des Klanges zu vermitteln habe ich mal meine akustische Gitarre, die Pariser Metro (komprimiert in MP3 bei 256Kbps), einen Sänger in der Metro, das Ambiente eines Bistro (wav) und die Strasse aufgenommen. Olympus hat selber auch ein paar Beispiele bereit gestellt: gesprochene Stimme, U-Bahn, ein Drink, Hafen, Orgel, Strand, Zoo, Cheminee und Verkehr.

Fazit


Olympus hat einen guten Einstieg in die Welt der professionellen Aufnahmegeräte hingelegt. Die Qualität der Konstruktion, die Klangqualität, seine Unabhängigkeit und der grosse eingebaute Speicher werden bei den Leuten sicher gut ankommen. Natürlich stösst das LS-10 auch an seine Grenzen – wenn man da zum Beispiel an Aufnahmen tiefer Frequenzen denkt. Dies ist aber schnell vergeben, wenn man bedenkt wie kompakt und durchdacht das LS-10 doch ist.

Really that's the only reason I continue to write this ridiculous blog. I know I can take great photographs but I no nothing at all about "photography".

So back to the strobist. I wanted to be able to use artificial light to do still life crap indoors.  I researched a bunch of flashes and discovered they cost like 400 bucks(My camera +two kit lenses cost 599).  That is just insane. Luckily I quickly discovered that the extra money one pays for these flashes goes into all the auto sensing and setting circuitry.  Since I only take photographs in complete manual mode I totally willing to make all the flash settings myself.  That's where the Strobist comes in.  He explained in detail what one needs to use a flash that is not on top of your camera.  The top of your camera flashes are in the wrong place if you want nice photos.  Anyhoo the make a long story less long there is a company that sell kits that contain the things recommended in the Strobist.  I bought the this one and they are now shipping me all this junk for only $239.00

Basically what you end up with is this

Now you can take photographs inside of your house without having to Photoshop the hell out of them.  See you get a cable that connects the flash to the hot shoe so you can mount the flash on a tripod and aim it at the umbrella-HOLD ON-- there is this video to explain it

Of course all that might sound kinda like overkill.  Well it would be until you consider how much you may have spent on your camera and your lenses and all that software(Um Yeah paying for software...well ya see...about that..nevermind).  But seriously it is a common misconception that the camera is what makes a photograph really good.  No that is definantly not the case.  For example

Of course I used no artificial lighting for those images.  The eye photo was taken using direct sunlight. Sure the photo could have been less grainy but the point is it's just better than alot of stuff coming out of a lot of expensive camera's.  I think most people just need the reassurance thay are spending enough money on the equipment to merit the value they place on thier images but then that is why most photographers are actually just consumers who take photographs like a child plays with army men.  It's all just make believe the action is in their own head.

]]> <![CDATA[Foto & so.]]> http://endofweb.wordpress.com/?p=78 Fri, 03 Oct 2008 12:35:21 +0000 miccca http://endofweb.wordpress.com/2008/10/03/foto-so/ Es gibt neues an der Foto-Front: Meine heiß geliebte Olympus e410 ist, nach einer Beschädigung am Gehäuse von der Reperatur (Die entgegen meiner Erinnerungen an den Olympus-Kundenservice völlig problemlos unter Garantie und dazu in grademal 2 Wochen gelaufen ist, und eine neues Display habe ich auch noch spendiert bekommen, so gewinnt man Kundensympathie) :). Darauf hab ich erstmal Bilder bei Flickr hochgepumpt. hierlang

Desweiteren komme ich nun endlich dazu, ein paar Takte zu meinem letzten Wochenende zu schreiben. Das habe ich nämlich in Köln vrbracht, genauer auf der Photokina. Ich war zum ersten mal da (immerhin fotografiere ich ja auch noch kein Jaaber das, was ich gesehen habe, war wirklich beeindruckend.

  • Canon EOS 50 D: Eine hervorragende DSLR, die zwar ohne Volformat-Sensor auskommt, dank rund 14 Megapixeln und auch sonst üppiger Ausstattung am Profi-Sektor kratzt und einen guten Start in den oberen Sektor digitaler Spiegelreflexfotografie darstelt. Schließlich werden die Cannon L-Optiken, die für vollformat-DSLRs (EOS 1D und 1Ds, 5D) Pflicht sind, auch an der 50D für einen merkbaren Unterschie sorgen können.
  • Nikon D700: Nikons verspätete Antwort auf Cannons EOS 5D, üppiger ausgestattet (Stichwort Autofokus) aber mit 2700 € auch noch ein gutes Stück teurer. Wer aber schon ambitionierter Nikonograf ist und über ein paar starke Objektive verfügt, sollte sich den Reiz des 35mm-Formates einmal gut überlegen.
  • Sony Alpha 900: DAS DING! Vollformat-Fotografie mit Zeiss Optiken. Während sie von Sony bescheidener Weise als Semipro-Kamera ausgeschrieben wird, ist meine Meinung, das sie sich vor einer D3 oder 1D nicht verstecken muss. Ausstattungsmäßig auf jeden Fall vergleichbar mit den ganz großen, ist der Preis von unter 3000 € ein Statement, das sich sehen lassen kann und mit dem Sony Cannon (hoffentlich, ich gönne es den Japaneren) endlich bei hat. Ein Paar Testbilder auf der Messe haben mich auf jeden Fall von der a900 überzeugt. Wenn ich irgendwann Vollformat anfange, dann mit Sony!

Neben den drei (für den Hobbyknipser mit durchschnittlich gefülltem Geldbeutel) bedeutendsten Produkten der Messe, gab es natürlich viel mehr zu sehen: Hasselblad, Leica, Zeiss und  Mamiya boten eindrucksvolle Vorstellungen dessen, was möglich ist. Auch an den Ständen anderer namhafter Kamera-und Objektivbauer gab es was zu sehen und anzufassen. einmal durch das Sigma 200-500 f2,8 zu knipsen ist schon ein tolles Gefühl (Vor allem bei dem Gedanken, dass man für die 25.000€ vor der Kamera auch ein Auto kaufen könnte). Schließlich konnte ich auch noch ein Paar Entscheidungen treffen:

  1. Olympus e3: Meine nächste Kamera. Ein echt solides Stück Fotoapparat für etwas rauhere Verhälnisse (Spritzwassergeschützt, eingebauter IS, mächtiger Staubschutz und der schnellste Autofokus auf dem Markt), zwar "nur" mit 4/3 Sensor, aber an sonstiger Ausstattung keineswegs geizig und trozdem mit dem Zuiko Digital 14-54 zu einem vertretbaren Kitpreis von roundabout 1800 € zu erstehen.
  2. Sigma 105mm f2,8 EX DG Macro. Ich liebe Makro. Ohne Frage werde ich mir diese Objektiv kaufen.
  3. Zuiko Digital 25mm f2.5 Pancake. Damit wird meine e410 zur ultimativen stealth-Konzertkamera. Muhahahahaha :D

Übrigens ein sehr gelungens System, das zwar seine Schwächen (Sensorgröße...) hat aber für ein bisschen Action immer zu haben ist, und genau das macht doch Spaß: Raus aus der Bude und irgendwas fotografieren.

Und natürlich habe ich es mir nicht nehmen lassen, auch noch ein kleines Schnäppchen abzugreifen: Cullman Universal Magic Stativ mit Kugelkopf, wobei der Name Programm ist: Das Stativ ist klappbar, lässt sich mit wenigen Handgriffen aufbauen, zu einem Einbein umbauen oder durch einschieben der Mittelstange von unten als Makro-Helfer nutzten. Komplett für 75 statt 120 €, und für die e410 völlig ausreichend (ob es die e3 sicher tragen kann, wird sich irgendwann herausstellen

Just to clarify one thing, this is a real rose with real water on it. I had been asked if it was numerous times.

I used my Olympus 50mm with a 2x teleconverter on it to achieve a true macro shot. I had to use a tripod due to the petiteness of the subject. I also was using one spotlight on the subject.

I love this shot because of the detail it exudes. Look at the petals and the droplets, it seems as if there is another world amongst the petals of a rose. I will leave it here for now, I must go to what some call "class". Also, I think this image is one for self interpretation. Enjoy and let me know what you think.
