Hola de nuevo amigos el día de hoy les dejo una captura de mi nuevo escritorio con el buen Ubuntu 8.04.1 a 64 Bits corriendo sobre mi nueva PC que lleva en el alma un Core 2 DUO y los gráficos de una Nvidia 8500GT por lo que me vi con la necesidad de mudar mi santiguan instalación que correa en un Athlon XP y un Ati Radeon.

Lo bueno

El rendimiento entre 32 y 64 bits no es muy apreciable ya que es difícil portal todo el sistema a esta arquitectura. Pero aun así el rendimiento es mas que aceptable e notado un mejor aprovechamiento en el uso del los núcleos de mi procesador. Así como una mejora en la ejecución de aplicaciones en segundo plano.

Lo malo

Pues mas de lo mismo los problemas en el mundo del open source casi siempre van ligados con compañías que no son tan flexibles con sus códigos, y es el caso de flash que al ejecutar animaciones en modo de pantalla completa se ralentizan sin duda un problema menor, pero que digo pleblema menor como imposible no poder ver youtube en pantalla completa es todo un delito XD.

Pero como siempre en linux tenemos alternativas para estos problemas y es tan fácil como activar el Plugin que incluye totem para navegar por youtube.

NVIDIA tendrá que apelar nuevamente a su núcleo G92 para mantenerse competitivo en el mercado de los GPUs, específicamente en el segmento. Para esto los verdes de Santa Clara han achicado el núcleo G92 a 55nm el cual ahora se llama G92b, al parecer NVIDIA le tiene bastantes esperanzas a esta tarjeta pues tendrá disponibles 130.000 unidades para el día del lanzamiento el cual sera a finales de Julio.

En cuanto a rendimiento el G92b no es mucho más rápido que el G92 en 65nm, aunque veremos alzas importantes en frecuencias, el punto fuerte de la tarjeta es su precio de venta actual de USD 199 una vez se vendan todas las 9800GTX normales bajará a USD 169.

FreeBSD has been around longer than Linux, and is a derivative of the UNIX operating system; it is NOT a Linux distribution. FreeNAS is an operating system based on FreeBSD that is supposed to be used for creating an NAS (Network Attached Storage) system. There’s a funny thing about how things rarely do what they are supposed to, as I discovered.

Now, I know that in the freeware world of community OS distribution efforts, not everything will be as polished or organized as say, a Windows project or release (don't bother with the sarcastic "Polished? Ha!"). What gets me though is that FreeNAS is up to version 0.68 and 0.69beta and they have still yet to discover just how buggy this software is. I know it's free, but it's based off of something that works already, so why did I have the worst experience ever trying to install it?

I began by downloading the latest LiveCD version (at the time, 3 nights ago), "FreeNAS-i386-liveCD-0.686.4.3374" and burned it onto a nice fresh Lightscribe disc. Knowing that this could be a potentially bad experience (I've had too many so now I'm cautious) I shutdown, unplugged my MBR hard drive and media drive and left in a blank drive and plugged in a 4GB USB flash drive. I wanted to test the set up before committing to a $370 parts purchase to build my actual NAS, and I'm so glad I did.

Here's what I wanted to do:

- Boot off of the USB flash drive (use to store OS and config files)
- Use SATA HDD for data storage
- Have it work

Here's what happened:

- Failed to boot from CD
- No chance to use SATA HDD for data storage
- GFL

So I booted from the CD and lo-and-behold the bloody thing infinite looped on me. Something about Trap 9 and how much it hates its life. I read the output before it vanished and I caught "i386". I knew I used an AMD processor so I knew this would be a problem. I went back to the FreeNAS website and found out there was an AMD beta version "FreeNAS-amd64-liveCD-0.69b1.3504". Apparently FreeBSD favours Intel (sadly) so this beta version is the first. I burned a new CD (having wasted the other one) and booted from CD again. It worked -- Sort of.

So this time it booted into the install menu and I selected install to USB/Flash/HDD. Invalid something or other. Wonderful, I thought. I rebooted and tried again, and for some reason it decided that the USB drive was fine and dandy that time. I rebooted and set my BIOS to boot from USB HDD.

INVALID SLICE. OMFGWTFBBQ?! OMFG CANNOT FIND KERNEL!1!11!1!! BLARGGGGG!111!!

I proceeded to clear my USB key and try again. Fast forward to after my obvious findings. I succeeded in installing the OS to the blank hard disk while leaving a separate partition for data storage. I rebooted from the HDD and figured I was finally on my way to getting everything configured.

Why do I always assume these things?

The first thing you need to do is tell the OS where it's getting it's Ethernet from (my NIC is an on-board nVidia chip). In FreeBSD they use stupid naming systems like da0, cd1, xfs3 and other lame, confusing things. The set-up tutorial told me that I could use an auto-detect feature or type it in manually. Auto-detect + anything usually ends up wrong so I opted to type it in. When I got to the prompt there was no option to type anything, just auto-detect. I used it and it said there was "no link-up detected". I rebooted and retried 6 times to no avail. This is what help forum are for, right?

I read about 70+ posts about this problem and the answer was always the same "it works for me, sucks it doesn't work for you" or "check the hardware compatibility list". I checked the list and it's totally incomplete. What I did gather though, is that if you're using a motherboard with onboard LAN that was made after the cold war, it's not supported in the FreeBSD (and hence, the FreeNAS) driver library. Checking the list of compatible NIC/Chipset versions, it seems that the newest nVidia model is the nForce 4 series, which makes me a sadpanda. We're up to 790i and FreeBSD only has drivers for something which ended its production life in early 2005. I know, its freeware, but I mean, really? So I went looking for an nForce 4 motherboard and I obviously didn't find any.

My only option is to buy a compatible NIC PCI card (which also needs to be manufactured before 2005 to ensure driver compatibility) and disable the onboard NIC which is faster, better, and integrated which saves room and promotes air-flow in the case. Sadly, because of how good onboard NICs are these days (any made after 2005 are likely Gigabit 10/100/1000), there aren't many manufacturers making PCI cards anymore. You're stuck with a few low quality and a couple high quality (dual Gigabit) high priced options which still won't be supported by the FreeNAS device driver library.

Solution? Use OLD, OLD, OLD, OLD, OLD, OLD parts to make a NAS. Problem? Lack of SATA support, no integrated video (will need a video card, $$$), lack of RAID drivers, lack of features such as Boot from USB (can't be upgraded from BIOS flashing consistently), lack of CPU sockets that accept anything BUT an Intel i386 from 1990, and lack of DDR2 RAM slots (try finding DDR RAM at a good price in 2GB kits).

At the end of all of this, I have decided that my server will either run Debian, Fedora 9, or sadly, Windows Vista stripped down to the bone using vLite (which could end up being a winner). I really wanted to use free software dedicated to creating an NAS, but using modern parts is next to impossible. It seems as though you need to pay for Windows Vista ($199 for Ultimate), Windows XP Pro ($169) or use a Linux distribution (I am not experienced with any at all) to create anything of value.

All I wanted was a FreeNAS and all I got was a pain in my ass.

• 55nm Technology ,Molto probabile visto i recenti problemi di Nvidia con GT200 a 55nm anche se forse dopo l´annuncio di TSMC del passaggio a 40nm NVIDIA possa puntare direttamente li.
• Die Size 576mm², identico a GT200 quindi molto poco probabile viste anche le critiche ricevute per un die cosi grosso.

Le specifiche sono poco convincenti ma visto l´arrivo di R700 NVIDIA potrebbe esser capace di tutto.

Passando alla canadese ATI, si parla di RV870:

• RV870 Core
• Processo Produttivo TSMC 40nm
• Die Size 140mm², RV770 è 260mm²
• 960 Stream Processor e 192 ALU
• Controller memory 256bit

Inoltre si dice che RV870 sia 1.2 volte più potente di RV770.

Da RV870 nascerà anche R800, che però a differenza di R700 che sarà una scheda con 2 GPU su un singolo pcb, questa sarà la prima scheda con 2 GPU su singolo Die, quindi la prima GPU multicore.

In seguito all'apertura di Gainward al mondo ATI dopo anni di esclusività nVidia, sembra che altre due note aziende siano in procinto di dire addio alle VGA in verde: XFX ed eVGA, riporta TheInquirer, avrebbero messo nero su bianco il loro addio a nVidia. Le due aziende, al contrario di quello che si potrebbe pensare, non dovrebbero passare però sotto la bandiera rossa di ATI o quantomeno non ci sono ancora dettagli in merito. Qualcuno, addirittura, azzarda che XFX ed eVGA possano firmare per Intel e dedicarsi alla produzione di soluzioni Larrabee. Staremo a vedere.

Un'altra notizia correlata al mondo nVidia riguarda la GeForce 9800 GT, una scheda di cui si parla da tempo ma che non è ancora stata presentata. Attesa nel breve periodo, la 9800 GT sarà prodotta sia a 55 nm che a 65 nanometri, ma in quest'ultimo caso (riporta Expreview) potrebbe esserci un "artifizio": in virtù dell'elevata presenza di 8800 GT ancora in inventario, nVidia avrebbe concesso ai propri partner di "flashare" il BIOS della scheda per cambiarne l'ID in 9800 GT. I partner, inoltre, potranno rimarchiare il chip grazie al laser.

In questo modo, tuttavia, potrebbe venirsi a creare una strana situazione: sebbene le 9800 GT supporterà la funzionalità HybridPower, le schede rimarchiate non saranno in grado di fare altrettanto, in quanto sprovviste della componentistica di controllo. Se tale indiscrezione fosse confermata, l'utente desideroso di acquistare una scheda pronta per l'HybridPower potrebbe incappare in qualche grattacapo di troppo...

Langkah - langkah untuk instalasi NVIDIA driver

1. download paket NVIDIA driver for Linux dari

   http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

   atau gw dapet link langsung buat NVIDIA GeForce 8 series

   http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_173.14.09.html

2. masuk ke shell mode

   # /sbin/init 3

3. trus logon sebagai root, kemudian masuk ke directory tempat dimana nyimpan downloadan NVIDIA tadi.

4. install driver-nya

   # sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.09-pkg1.run

   muncul beberapa pesan error, tp bersamaan ada konfirmasi buat ngatur konfigurasi secara otomatis jadi jawab aja 'yes' semuanya.

5. Ok, proses instalasi selesai.. lalu kembali ke window mode

   # /sbin/init 5

6. NVIDIA driver mulai bekerja ditandai dengan munculnya logo NVIDIA untuk beberapa detik dan tiap kali booting logo tersebut akan muncul.
