That last quilt for my solo show is finally done . . . and I’m exhilarated enough to shout

That last quilt for my solo show is finally done . . . and I'm exhilarated enough to shout "Whee!" Also, I call completing a quilt "taking it home;" hence, the nursery rhyme reference.

The title of the quilt is Messengers, and it is 36" wide by 44" long. I've worked on it for about 3 years. Everything is hand pieced and hand stitched. The fabric is my own hand painted fabric. After quilting, I keep painting. The first time I painted onto a quilt that I had spent a lot of time stitching, I was really nervous. Now, I'm excited by it. You never know how the quilted surface and the paints and other products you put on it will interact. It's a kind of "dangerous" serendipity that I've never regretted yet. Would you call that an oxymoron?

The saying on the quilt is a quote from Brenda Ueland, a famous writer and teacher of writing:

Think of yourself as an incandescent power, illuminated and perhaps forever talked to by God and his messengers.

This is my write up for the quilt:

The messengers are gathering in prime formation: 2 butterflies, 3 dragonflies, 5 angels, 7 crows, 11 stars. To truly hear their message, you must kill the ego. Egos are wont to kill the messenger when they dislike the message they are receiving, but that is a useless tactic. The message will simply find you another way, through another messenger.

(Inspired by posts from Meredith and pragya on S&Co., Ryze network)

---------
Its been a long day. The TV plays something I don't hear. I sit at the computer and type. Words that don't make much sense (though I'm trying hard). All I want now is for Time to stretch, as I have so much more to do. Cook, clean, write, etc. etc. It suddenly hits me that I'm tired. The flesh is indeed weak! But the spirit ?? This comes as a shock - even to myself - that I'm ageing, when I've crossed only even half my life!

And then, in the background, my ears suddenly catch, soft strains of music. The familiar lullaby that my baby is falling off to sleep with. A lullaby about 'twinkling little stars'. The music is soothing, restful...and heavenly.

If only for a few moments, the creases on my forehead fade away. I am a child myself. A child, with no worries, no fears, no plans. A child, drifting off into a deep, restful silence. Far, far away from the madding world.

Then, the tape ends.

Ever wondered who Miss Muffet was? This same site has a wonderful history of this rhyme.

Story of the Little Miss Muffet Rhyme

Little Miss Muffet was a small girl whose name was Patience Muffet. Her stepfather, Dr. Muffet (1553-1604) was a famous entomologist who wrote the first scientific catalogue of British Insects. Whilst eating her breakfast of curds and whey Little Miss Muffet was frightened by one of his spiders and ran away! This particular Nursery Rhyme of Little Miss Muffet reputedly dates back to the late 16th century as indicated by the birth date of Dr Muffet! Unlikely story about Patience Muffet!

Monday’s child is fair of face.
Tuesday’s child is full of grace.
Wednesday’s child is full of woe.
Thursday’s child has far to go,

This was passed on to me by my mother, which was passed on to her by her mother. I pass it on to you as a breather. A lot of the topics covered here are stressful and can really play tricks with your mind. I like to think positive and that it is all worth it, each and every day (even the bad ones). As, for me and my siblings, this poem rings true. Does it ring true for you, too?

I feel so lazy today.

My house is covered in dust due to the winds of Fay and my DH installing laminate flooring this week.

I found another nursery rhyme that is demented. I think someone should review these things and re-write them! Either that or have someone like Chris Rock or Robin Williams make decent jokes on em! I mean, listen to this one:" Wee Willie Winkie"...who in their right mind would name their kid this!... " Runs through the town, upstairs and downstairs in his nightgown." Don't ya think if you saw someone running around like this guy you'd maybe call the police! "Rapping at the windows"....creepy..."crying through the lock," ...like ,yuk!,"Are the children all in bed? For it's now eight o'clock." Sounds like the guy has a personal problem to me. If I knew someone was running around my town in his nighgown looking for my kid , oh well....you figure out what I'd do!!!!!!

I was listening to a comic on XM Radio today and his act was about nursery rhymes and how gruesome most of them were. I kind of already knew that, but he hit on a nursery rhyme to which he gave a particularly gruesome past, and I was stunned.

I checked it out on the Internet and found conflicting articles. Below I have posted an article I found on http://www.associatedcontent.com about the rhyme and I'd like to know what other people think of it. Is the story about the nursery rhyme Fact or Urban Legend?

THE ARTICLE:

Over the years, we have sung the words to a children's song without ever knowing what it meant. Many people are very surprised when they find out how dark and depressing, "Ring Around the Rosie," actually is. These people cannot believe that the song is actually about the Bubonic Plague.

If the song is broken down into comments and lines, it is easier to see how dark and depressing the song actually is.

Ring Around the Rosie

When a person contracted the Bubonic Plague, they would gain rose-colored, puss-filled sores on their body called rosies. As the infection spread, rings would wind around the rosies. "Ring around the rosie," refers to these rings.

Pocket Full of Posies

During the time of the Bubonic Plague, people realized that it was harmful to go around the body of someone who had died from the plague. The common practice in some areas of Europe was to fill the shirt or jacket pocket of the deceased with posies so that others would know to leave the body alone.

"Pocket full of posies," was what would soon happen after the person started getting the rings around the rosie. Once the rings started to form, the undertaker would be called to prepare the posies.

Ashes Ashes

Once the body of the person who had died from the plague had been taken away, it would be burned. This is essentially when cremation started as a form of burial.

There was a lot of worry that extra handling of the body could cause people to get sick. There was also worry by some that the body would come back in the form of a vampire or some other type of the walking dead. Burning the body was the only true option they had.

We All Fall Down

It was believed by many that eventually the Bubonic Plague would wipe out all of civilization. It is understandable why they had this belief because of the number of people that were dying everyday from the Plague.

Pretty grusome stuff, eh?

This song is like a drug.

True My Heart

Yeah, I know its been around for a long time. Even saw some parodies of the opening sequence where the song was used. When I listened to the full version, I just got hooked. It was too catchy, I listened to it at least 10 times today. Even when I was in the university, I was humming the song.

About The Parodies:

The song "True My Heart" is used as an opening theme for an adult visual novel called "Nursery Rhyme". What's notable about the parodies is that the quality is pretty good. There are a lot of them out there (Even some weird ones.) so its hard to pick which is the best. Anyway, here are my favorite parodies:

Nanoha De Kishimen

Do you know why this is awesome? It's because the video clips and images used in the parody is before StrikerS. StrikerS sucked real bad!

Bloody Rhyme

I laughed really hard! This is a parody with the Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni characters. They used clips from the anime where the girls are going psycho. I Also laughed when it showed the picture of Tomitake and Akasaka and below the picture the word "lolicon" is there.

Clannad Rhyme

Nothing really much to say but this was nicely done. The images used are from the visual novel and the video clips are from the Clannad anime.
