Let me share a story with you about the most baffling and irritating problem I ever experienced with my laptop. It's the same machine which, earlier, played tricks like "class not registered" and "hibernation option disappeared" on me (which I have discussed in earlier posts in this blog). The latest one that it threw at me rendered me completely witless. The machine simply stopped the wireless connectivity - and I was stuck with my laptop in one single place of the room where the ethernet cable was hooked up!

I use a HP Pavilion tx1000 Notebook, which they also called an "entertainment PC". It's really a nice one, even though a little less powerful than equivalent Intel Core 2 Duo machines (this one runs on AMD Turion 64x2 [dual core] processor), but really a value for money with packed up good features and softwares from HP.

The wireless on it was running excellently well since the day I had bought it, which would be more than a year by now. The machine was reset back to its factory settings in April this year, as I was trying to get the Vista SP1 installed cleanly. And it worked fine for about a month as well, since that was done.

And then one fine day last week, the wireless was simply gone! The Device Manager was not showing the wifi device, reinstalling the WLAN driver wasn't causing any change, flashing the BIOS and installing the latest one from HP's website wasn't curing anything!

As you can understand, I went through a series of attempts in order to resolve the problem, as I was getting various opinions from the forums across the internet:

System restore to a point before the problem - Solved it once and got wireless back. After a reboot problem came back again.

Complete factory restore (yes, I did it again!) - Solved it once. After reboot problem came back again.

Did a complete factory restore once more and checked through "safe mode with networking" - The wireless worked once and then disappeared from safe mode as well after a reboot.

A completely flabbergasted me tried chatting with an HP support agent online. She advised (and as was advised by a particular thread in the internet as well) to remove and reseat the wireless card in the machine. Now I would have tried that out, but the screw was so small that I was lacking a right tool to do it. Thinking of that as the last option (well, the last one in reality will be to go to a machanic and get it fixed by paying for it!), I was willing to wait till I could find a tool, meanwhile my machine was connected to the net via ethernet cable.

Since the machine was rebuilt now back to factory settings, I was installing softwares back one after another. In the process of that, I uninstalled Norton Internet Security that came with the machine with a 60 days trial period (now this is funny - every time I took my machine back through the time machine called "reset to factory settings", my 60 day period renewed!).

The moment it was done, my wireless came back! And it stayed on even after subsequent reboots.

It reminded me of a particular thread in one of the forums I visited - that another person had the same problem and killing some of the Norton processes running did the trick for him. However, his case was that wireless was working in safe mode (w/ networking) and wasn't in normal mode - and he could do a process-by-process-comparison between the 2 states of the machine.

Anyway, I now use AVG Free Antivirus, Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and Norton Security Scan (that came with Google pack). And I use my wireless. Bye bye, Norton Internet Security!

Well it has been a few days since my last post; in fact, I can hardly believe just how many it has b

Well it has been a few days since my last post; in fact, I can hardly believe just how many it has been. I am in danger of slipping back into the swamp of oblivion again, as gradually my aching mind lapses more and more...

So, what have I been up to since we last communicated? The answer is simply that I have been loaded up to the eyeballs on pain killers and most anything else I could get my hands on as I have been suffering another flare up of the dreaded Fibro-pain. This time it is located somewhere between the lower ribs on the right hand side of my body.

The pain has been getting progressively worse; to the point where I slept with a rolled up pillow under the natural curvature of the spine while lying on the left hand side, to relieve the pressure exherted by my bodily particles in the many and varied positions which I tried to lie in last night. The pain isn't excrutiating; rather a dull persistant pain which becomes excrutiating upon being hugged or nudged accidentally, it is difficult to locate on purpose but oh, so easy by accident!

Needless to say, I have been pottering about the house and garden; enjoying the fine weather in a slightly muzzy state of mind as the various proprietory pain killers, anti-inflammatories and narcotics take their effect. I am lethargic and drowsy; while the kids are in school at least, and unable to give my full attention to my blogs or websites - for fear of messing stuff up!

As a result of this sad state that I find myself in I am taking time out to review the ergonomic devices that make it possible for me to continue with my blogging, etc, despite my inclinations to roll into a tight foetal ball and forget about it all until the pain has passed me by.

Having taken delivery of my Wacom Bamboo Graphics Pad a few weeks ago, I can now announce that I have lost the pen which makes it all possible! Heaven only knows how, but this is what I am afraid of at the moment, ie losing the plot altogether.

For my birthday DG bought me a lovely red/burgundy upholstered office chair for use at my second hand swanky computer desk, obtained via Freecycle. The persistant pain in my left hip seems to have flown the coup since I started to use the adjustable height and posture lever's and the pain in my right shoulder and neck has improved due to the fact that I am now sitting at an appropriate height.

Unfortunately, it seems that the numbness in the right hand, which had improved dramatically is destined to worsen due to the absence of the afore mentioned pen. Before I started to use the graphics pad, I had no idea how useful it was going to be; in terms of navigating the keyboard and scrolling up and down the page it has proved to be invaluable. As the manufacturer is keen to point out, the angle at which you hold a pen is far more natural than how you hold the mouse and is less inclined to lead to repetitive strain injuries. It certainly seemed to work with me...

One thing that is missing from my list of conveniences and essentials is a foot rest. I already have a wrist rest for use with the nearly obsolete mouse and as I was taught the skill of touch typing I instinctively type in the correct position and don't require one for the keyboard itself. However, I already had back problems, long before I sucumbed to the Fibro/ME; these are exacerbated by my tendency to cross my legs rather than sit with my feet flat on the floor with my knees slightly apart. Yes, a foot rest would definately come in handy in the meantime, I can recommend using an old telephone directory or two!

As I inherited my HUGE oversized 17" screen from my Mom, on one of her upgrades, I also inherited an anti-glare screen. This does appear to work, as the degree of eyestrain suffered is minimal and can usually be countered by the sensible wearing of my glasses, however common sense is often overthrown by enthusiasm!

All in all things are pretty much as good as they could be at the moment. I have a number of helpful items at my disposal, all of which are designed to make life as easy as can be, and to keep it that way. One item that has been noticeably missing from my inventory is wireless broadband and a laptop computer. Well; that all changed last Wednesday when a second-hand Dell Latitude CPi was delivered courtesey of EBay and an anonymous benefactor! Thank you to both...

I managed to track down a wireless dongle to fit into the back of the machine one day earlier this week. So far I have configured the lap-top, but have yet to get down to sorting out the wireless internet facility with my PC. Like all good things, this will come to he/she who waits, but right now I am waiting for a moments lucidity when I am not up to the eyeballs delivering boy's here, there and every where!

Whoo-hoo! It works, so now I can lie in the lap of luxury and still play on the internet! The boy's in the meantime can play on their online gaming sites to their heart's content. Of course this is only possible because of my installation of Norton Internet Security and the FREE Parental Control download pack. As good as the Microsoft security is; I firmly believe in Norton and will always be able to rely upon it, although I have now got to figure out how to download it onto the new laptop. After all, I don't want a bug on there now, do I?

Meanwhile, I can still play on the internet and keep the boy's off MY computer. If I need to make international phone calls I can always use the Skype facility, which wouldn't be such a bad idea as I need to check the balance on my bank account in the UK; which otherwise can add a lot to the cost of the phone bill(ie landline). Unfortunately, some of these things don't always come cheap, but they are worth their weight in gold...

As I'm running short on time; I am going to desert this post for the time being and re-visit it in the dead of night; when no-one's looking so that I can update the links and maybe add a photo or two. And if I'm lucky, I will remember to sign in and out of my TSheets account time-clock...

For the time being; patience is a virtue!

Polly Peirce

ps. A whole week later, I am finishing this post off and I am pain free! It's amazing how using ergonically designed things while doing stuff which could potentially be further detrimental to my health can actually lead to an improvement! See ya!

Mac support (that also take iPod support calls) have a very perculiar call centre. First and foremost, the guy on the other line had no fake-Anglo name, spoke in broken, accented English, was arguing with two others who seemed, from a phone at least, to be fluent in Australian English, didn't notice that I told him that I had Window Vista on my PC, and hung up on me halfway through explaining how to reformat my iPod Shuffle.

In contrast, Symantec's Support Line have a very Indian-Subcontinent-Sounding David Welles in a quiet call centre, who asked for all my operating details (In a non-phising way) and guided me right through fixing my Norton Internet Security subscription so that my mum would be happy.

Makes you think: we always bag out the Mumbai Call Centre, yet they seem to be the ones offering decent service. Of course, there's the issue with our information being jeopardised (I'm sure Product Disclosure Statements cover that, though), but when I get decent service, I recognise it, even if it has to come from someone who thinks I live in Austria.

May I take this moment to point out how much I hate call centres in general. Despite many suggestions to do otherwise, I do not plan to work at one any time soon.

I been using the Internet for a long time now, so long I don’t even remember when the first I ever

I been using the Internet for a long time now, so long I don’t even remember when the first I ever used it. But back then there was a lot less hassle of having protection on our PCs and not only that! You also didn’t have to worry about having your very own identity stolen!

Today’s world is totally different, there are hundreds of thousands of people on the Internet that would love to steal your credit card, bank details, paypal account you name it they want it!

But it’s not just that they also want to take your identity to ruin your credit by taking out massive loans in your name and having it paid in to your account for them to just withdraw it from there PC…

It does not stop there either, not only are we scared to wits of losing our cash but we also have people wanting to destroy our data on our computers out of pure fun and joy… It’s a sad world we live in.

Now I’m not here to scare you, don’t close that Internet connection just yet as I do also have some great tips and ideas on how to keep your self protected from such worries.

Firstly, every computer must own a Firewall, but I can hear the slow ticking in your head already banging away and asking… What’s a Firewall?

Firewalls are designed to prevent other computers accessing your computer without your permission, to keep this very basic, a firewall is basically wall between you and the Internet. For others to get pass this wall they have to be given permission from the users on the other side.

Firewalls are great protection; I have used many, ZoneAlarm, Norton and also McAffee. But the best I have seen so far would have to be from Panda Software. They have a two in one package having Antivirus and Firewall all in one box. Though this may stop people from trying to attack your PC using software etc there are still many other routes that you can get attacked.

Viruses, Spyware, Trojans are just a few names that are currently taking advantage of thousands of PCs around the world; a firewall will not protect you from all of these!

Instead, you are going to need an Antivirus product which will take care of most of these threats.

Most Antivirus software will protect you from almost all threats on the Internet, you don’t need Spyware protection for Spyware, Trojan protection for Trojans… You get the picture?

One single Antivirus application will do all the work for you, don’t sit there searching endless searches for different products to help you out… Why?

In the end you will have loads of junk software on your PC all taking up system resources and wasting your computers CPU power. You will start to see your PC running slower and in the end you will just have to do a recovery of the entire system because it will be too naked to even start up… Phew!

But you get the picture now; a single application is all you need, the big brand names do all this for you at the moment, it runs in your task bar and does almost everything except make you a nice cold tea! Just make sure you install the latest Antivirus software soon as your Operating System is installed… We don’t want anything bad slipping through do we!

To keep your self safe from all the nasty stuff on the Internet then the only best advice I can give you is to stay away from them bad nasty adult sites and also stay away from FREE software sites… These type of sites are hard to pick from, some are bad… Some are good.

Keep your software up to date and watch where you go and you should have no problems at all.
