Nimic nou pe patinoar. Dacă aţi jucat predecesoarele lui NHL 08, nu veţi avea niciun fel de surpriză din partea acestuia. Grafic este acelaşi joc, chiar cu unele glitch-uri grafice destul de nasoale, dar asupra cărora nu ne vom opri, deoarece le vom arunca pe spatele portării jalnice de pe console. Partea cu sunetul este mai mult decât identică cu ceea ce ne-am obişnuit. Mă mir chiar că s-au obosit să rearanjeze echipele după sezonul trecut. Ceva tot este schimbat în joc. Gameplay-ul a fost îmbunătăţit prin introducerea a ceea ce se cheamă stick skill. Cei care se joacă cu un controller cu două stick-uri direcţionale pot scoate nişte scheme destul de interesante cu care vor mai sparge un pic din monotonia consacrată deja a seriei. Dar, şi acum să vă ţineţi bine, acest lucru nu se poate face pe versiunea pentru PC. Da, aţi înţeles bine, doar cei care se vor juca NHL 08 pe Xbox 360 sau pe PS3 vor putea să danseze pe gheaţă cu un puc ce brusc prinde viaţă sub crosă.

O găselniţă interesantă care ne face experienţa de joc un pic mai acătării este modificarea AI-ului. Acesta se schimbă în funcţie de tipul de joc adoptat de fiecare jucător în parte. Ce înseamnă asta? Ei bine, dacă foloseşti în mod constant un jucător pentru a înscrie din aceleaşi poziţii sau o anumită fază de atac pentru a marca, AI-ul devine conştient de acest lucru şi te va bloca în mod constant. Jucătorul tău preferat va fi marcat încontinuu de o grămadă de găligani care vor avea grijă permanent de el. Acest lucru poate duce ori la frustrare, ori la distracţie. Distracţie pentru că te vei putea folosi de găurile astfel create în defensivă pentru a crea alte şi alte faze de gol.

Din nefericire, AI-ul se simte doar în echipa adversă, coechipierii tăi fiind praf. Cele mai frustrante momente din tot jocul apar când trei dintre ai tăi se reped către un puc singuratic şi se împiedică între ei, iar pucul ajunge la un adversar total bulversat de norocul ce i-a căzut pe cap.

După cum suntem obişnuiţi deja din ’91, EA ne tratează anual cu câte un simulator sportiv bazat pe hochei. 1992 a fost singurul an în care EA nu a binevoit să ne bucure cu prezenţa pe piaţă a unui astfel de joc. Aşadar NHL a ajuns la fantasticul număr de 18 (optsprezece) variante. Aşa că poate vă întrebaţi ce îmbunătăţiri ar mai putea aduce, încât să se justifice an de an lucrul la această serie. Ce îmbunătăţiri s-ar putea aduce încât să fie necesară an de an munca la acest joc? Dacă stai să analizezi, ai putea spune că în materie de gameplay nu prea mai ai ce aduce nou. Jocul nu s-a schimbat deloc, sunt aceleaşi reguli, aceleaşi crose, aceleaşi pucuri. Evident se poate vorbi despre îmbunătăţiri grafice, având în vedere că tehnologia evoluează, calculatoarele noastre devin din ce în ce mai bune şi mai ieftine, dar parcă ne pusesem de acord de acum doi sau chiar trei ani asupra faptului că modul în care NHL arată este cât se poate de real. Aşadar nici acolo nu prea mai ai ce face... Gheaţa tot gheaţă rămâne fie că suntem în 2005 sau în 2010. Aşadar ce îi poate face pe cei de la EA ca an de an să scoată un simulator de hochei? Dacă până acum nu este destul de clar care este politica EA, vă voi spune eu: REGELE BAN. Cei mai mulţi bani care se fac acum se obţin din serii de jocuri deja consacrate şi nu din inovaţii menite să schimbe soarta lumii. Inerţia consumatorului este piatra de bază pentru o companie care deja se bazează pe un nume şi nu pe calitate pentru a-şi vinde produsul. Exemplul cel mai concret nu poate fi decât SIMS.    (Va urma!)

- American Hockey League (AHL) va cuprinde 29 de echipe. Jucătorii vor avea ocazia să-şi dezvolte îndemânarea în AHL pentru ca apoi să joace în NHL. Fiecare echipă din AHL va putea fi jucată.

NHL 08 este dezvoltat de EA Canada, aceeaşi echipă care v-a lansa în acest an şi Fifa 08.

Todos os méritos para os Penguins, que sobreviveram a tudo no jogo 5: ao amplo domínio do Detroit por três períodos (com outros 55 chutes no gol e quatro vantagens numéricas), a 20 mil torcedores apoiando o time da casa e às baixas de Sergei Gonchar e Ryan Malone, ambos contundidos durante o jogo, mas que retornaram antes do fim.

Se você tem uma chance de ganhar a Copa Stanley, tem a obrigação de aproveitá-la. Nas circunstâncias do jogo 5 (em casa e com 3-1 na série), a obrigação virou dever. A equipe falhou quando não podia e talvez aprenda a lição da pior maneira possível, perdendo o jogo 6 e assistindo em casa ao Pittsburgh levantar a Copa, fazendo (belíssima) história.

Game of the Year 2007

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

If you didn't see this coming, then I feel horrifyingly sorry for you. Call of Duty 4 is more addictive than drugs. And that's why it won. Mulitplayer is what sets this apart. The short campaign was near perfect, and the game overall had a great polish. No shit this won.

NHL 08 was runner up. But don't feel bad that you didn't win. If EA Canada can continue to build with what they already have, which is incredible, don't be surprised if NHL 09 manages to snag the title next year.

To go along with the update though was a VERY unexpected change. No longer are you limited to 3 vs. 3, but now you can play 6 on 6!!!

Brilliant move on EA's part. I played one game which was 4 on 4 and there was zero lag involved. I've had frequent games with noticeable lag when it's 3 on 3 so hopefully they have stronger servers to handle the traffic.

Assuming everyone knows how to play hockey and plays their position properly, 6 on 6, or even just 5 on 5 is a real joy here.

Now hopefully everyone stops crying and being little babies wondering where the roster update is. Looks like we know why it took so long! I for one am GLAD it took this long if we get this added bonus!!

I would assume Roster Update 2 comes out within the next week or so since the trade deadline just hit hard.

I'm getting literally 100+ hits alone from people who clearly want to know about it. I don't know, so don't ask me.

After a great first season for me (league's 2nd overall), I have been selected to be the GM of the team for Season 3. I couldn't be more excited. Of course I wouldn't want to be the GM of any other team.

That means I'm basically in charge of the team and get to make the tough decisions such as roster moves, trades, dealing with arguments...etc...

I'm sure no one that reads my blog really cares much, but it's a big responsibility that will take up some of my time. I know I have a lot of it. :)

Let's Go Jackets!

“Trade Markus Naslund", “Fire Nonis”, “Trade Morrison", “Fire Vigneault”, “The Canucks won’t win the cup”, "Trade, Trade, Trade”… Does this sound familiar? Well if you live in Vancouver like I do then you obviously hear this on a daily basis from the so called “Canuck fans”.

The trade deadline is coming up and I’m sick of hearing this shit from people calling themselves Vancouver Canuck fans, the moment the Canucks lose a couple games they write the Canucks off and say they should make all these ridiculous trades and how they should fire the General Manager Dave Nonis. Most of these fans probably have never been apart of a real hockey team and I don't think are true hockey fans. Also when we start putting a string of wins together, we all of a sudden are going to win the Stanley Cup and are unstoppable. It’s funny to hear this sometimes and It’s kind of embarrassing to be associated with these people as being Vancouver Canucks fans, and having this stereotype on all of the real Canuck fans who stick with their team no matter what the outcome is.

Hearing some of the trade proposals these “fans” make and how they think they could do a better job at running the team. These people are in some fantasy world and think that being a G.M. of a hockey club is like playing a video game like NHL 08 or 2K8. They think it’s that easy to pick up a player like Jokinen, Lecavalier, or Sundin, well it isn’t! These days in the NHL it’s much harder, you have to think about things like the salary cap, upcoming free agents, contract negotiations, and the future. People would love to see players like Naslund, Morrison or Cooke traded away because they are expensive and are under-achieving, so what makes you think other teams would want them? What make you think they would trade their key players to the Canucks for a Naslund or Morrison? Get real! Most teams who are sellers in the market and are willing to trade some of their star-players want young talent and draft picks. Selling off your future up-and-coming talent for a “rental player” is the last thing the Canucks should do, just like running any other business you have to think long-term.

Another thing that pisses me off is booing and trash-talking of the foundation of the franchise Luongo when he lets a few bad goals in or loses a couple in a row. He is arguably the best goaltender in the NHL and to hear fans rip on Luongo when he’s having a bad game is ludicrous. We wan’t the guy to enjoy playing for this team and to stay long-term but if fans are on the guy for every mistake he makes that might just drive him out of the city once his contract is up.

I’ve been a die-hard Canuck fan for most of my life, and have stuck with my team through the good times (’94 Playoffs up until the finals) and the difficult times (the Mike Keenan/ Mark Messier era). I’m not saying I haven’t been pissed off at the direction the team was going or wanting to get rid of some players (IE: Jeff Cowan), I have, but I have always stuck with my team and always looked ahead even if things were looking dim.

So be loyal with your team! Quit complaining about how the team is run, you can’t do any better! And trading away our young talent is not the answer! Roberto Luongo said it best “I can’t win 82 games for you guys”. Bandwagon jumpers we don't take your kind here, go cheer for the Edmonton Oilers! Have faith in the Canucks but if we don’t win the Stanley Cup there’s always next year.

Other Notes:

- Huge win by the Canucks tonight against the division leader Minnesota Wild, Daniel Sedin with the clutch goal in OT.

- Lukas Krajicek will have surgery for his shoulder and will be out for the rest of the season.

- Kevin Bieksa is recovering nicely and will play a couple games with the Vancouver Canucks minor league club the Manitoba Moose and could be back as early as next week.

- The NHL trade deadline is Tuesday, February 26th. It is an exciting time to see who and where players get moved so get up early and watch it on TSN. Sportsnet’s coverage last year was kind of a joke so I think the best and the most up-to-date news and trades will be from TSN.

- The Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers game this past Saturday, Feb 16th was probably one of the best games I've seen in a long time, it was old time hockey that's for sure. Full of hard hits and fights with the Canucks coming up on top for the crucial 2 points. This game brought life back to the Vancouver Canucks and perhaps gave them a new identity. I have included the video.
