Sprint is providing some subscribers with an update of the release plans for their Airave Femtocell Base Stationon August 17th. Sprint AIRAVE™ is a device that creates a CDMA signal for your mobile phone (like a miniature cell tower). AIRAVE provides enhanced and reliable mobile phone coverage in your house or office even if your existing wireless coverage is poor. This works with any Sprint phone (Nextel style excluded) with some important quirks:

Samsung Instinct: Great Phone, Weak Operator

Samsung Instinct is truly a phone that can give iPhone a run for the money. It is cheaper, $450 wit

Samsung Instinct is truly a phone that can give iPhone a run for the money. It is cheaper, $450 without contract as opposed to $599 for iPhone 3G 8GB version or $699 for iPhone 3G 16GB version. Also, Instinct comes with a 2GB microSD card and 2 batteries. Already, it is the best selling phone for Sprint in the last two years and is comparable to Motorola Razr in sales when it was released in 2006. Samsung realizes that and has been made great marketing efforts to push the product. Samsung just released a three-part web series featuring San Francisco, Boston and Chicago ballparks, all shot on the Instinct. In addition, they had previously announced a promotion asking filmmakers to post short videos on YouTube that feature Instinct for $20 each and a chance to win $10,000. Clearly, Samsung knows it has a good product.

Unfortunately, for Samsung, they are stuck with a lousy operator. Sprint has been struggling to integrate Nextel and has been leaking customers since then. As this Engadget post in May, indicates, Sprint lost over a million subscribers in Q1 2008. It is still the third ranked carrier in US with 52 million subscribers. However, I believe its days are numbered. With persistent rumorsabout Sprint being bought by SK Telecom, which the market thinks is unlikely, and potential Nextel spinoff and WiMAX issues, I don't see how Sprint can focus on keeping its market share.

FISA ‘compromise’ completes transformation of US into full police state

Larry Chin
Online Journal
July 12, 2008

On Wednesday, the US Congress overwhelmingly passed legislation permitting government spying, including giving immunity to telecommunications companies involved in secret domestic surveillance programs. With the stroke of George W. Bush’s pen, the US is now a police state by definition.

The extent of the spying program, and its larger implications, have been revealed by Mark Klein, who blew the whistle on secret domestic spying program of Bush/Cheney’s National Security Agency (NSA) and AT&T: AT&T whistleblower: spy bill creates infrastructure for police state

The update of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, called the “FISA compromise,” or more appropriately, the “spy bill,” largely completes the triumph of the Bush/Cheney administration and a bipartisan criminal consensus. By convenient design, the FISA revision derails pending lawsuits filed against the Bush administration’s corporate spying partners (AT&T, Sprint Nextel, and Verizon), silences (the largely empty-to-begin-with) congressional investigations into the Bush administration’s illegal domestic spying program.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and the Democrats have now moved to silence all discussion about the issue.

Fear itself, a.k.a. spying itself

Between the false flag mass murder of 9/11 and the creation of the “war on terrorism,” the USAPATRIOT Act and this new FISA revision, the Bush-Cheney administration and its enthusiastically complicit congressional partners have achieved total victory -- world war, open criminality, and the end of law itself.

It gives the US government unprecedented new spying powers and sweeping new legal cover for spying that goes well beyond even the original FISA law -- which itself was an abomination that already permitted the US president broad surveillance powers.

Given the fact that the US government is a wholly corrupted criminal organization by definition, the political spin over “oversight,” warrants, the involvement of the inspector general, etc., is all the more transparently ridiculous: the operatives of such apparatuses do not investigate or punish their own. Nor do they voluntarily stop the lucrative and intoxicating criminal activity that is their lifeblood.

In fact, the debate over the spy bill is a red herring, clouding the larger central (purposely unaddressed) issue: the “war on terrorism” lie itself.

The mass murder of 9/11 was a false flag operation, orchestrated and executed by the Bush administration. The “war on terrorism” is a perpetual covert operation, an endless pretext for war and murder, supported by a bipartisan consensus. (See Who is Osama bin Laden? and Al-Qaeda:the database.) No 9/11, no “war on terrorism,” no war in the Middle East. No “war on terrorism” lie, no dictatorial powers for the White House, and no beefed-up FISA.

Given that the “war on terrorism” is a lie, the need for unprecedented spying is also a lie. Just as 9/11 remains the endless pretext for endless war and terrorism, it also remains, in its countless propaganda manifestations, the justification for open totalitarian rule of force and intimidation within US borders.

The totalitarian criminal agenda is fully endorsed by neoliberal Democrats, including Barack Obama. According to the Obama campaign, “Senator Obama has said before that the compromise bill is not perfect. Given the choice between voting for an improved yet imperfect bill, and losing important surveillance tools, Senator Obama chose to support the FISA compromise.”

The pro-surveillance Democrats, led by Senator Jay Rockefeller and Obama (whose lame hemming-hawing justifications can be read here) are repeating asinine lies, and groundless excuses.

In calling criminal spying and covert operations “important surveillance tools,” Obama is showing his truest colors. Obama, whose politics and rhetoric have been consistently in line with the Bush/Cheney agenda on all of the most telling issues (war in Afghanistan, war on Iran, “terrorism,” “homeland security,” globalization, and most recently, other right-wing positions), is a smooth-talking and appealing front for the Bush-Cheney status quo. Obama and McCain, like Bush-Cheney, will continue to push the endless “war on terrorism” lie, and embrace every single criminal act conducted in the name of this propaganda construct.

All “homeland security”/Big Brother measures such as FISA, in any form, provides political cover for the US government to engage in criminal activity. Any politician, be it Bush/Cheney or Obama, who approves of any sort of “surveillance” is guilty of committing a criminal act, and of raping the Constitution along the way.

Cynical posturing and election-year flatulence from Obama’s legion of defenders and fans cannot hide what has happened, or who is responsible. The rape of the US Constitution is so overt and so egregious that it has set off a wave of outrage and backlash, spawning unusual new grassroots coalitions.

Clearly, however, the powers that be, including the Obama camp, have casually dismissed this relatively small portion of the US public out of its election-year calculations, regardless of how stridently they organize, blog, blow whistles or file lawsuits.

Senator Russ Feingold (whose own record on opposing the Bush administration is less than stellar) warned that the FISA revision “could mean millions upon millions of communications between innocent Americans and their friends, families or business associates overseas could now be legally collected.”

It means much more than Feingold states, and it has for many years -- perhaps decades.

Spying: the pre- and post-9/11 norm

Returning again to the exposé by whistleblower Mark Klein, his detailed and stomach-turning exposé, which includes materials from the key court cases, exposes the fact that the NSA began breaking into local telephone circuits in 2001. As pointed out by Robert Parry, the current program may have been in place before 2001.

In other words, the spying program never had anything to do with international “terrorists,” and everything to do with a larger police state agenda, including the power to identify, designate and destroy individuals whose opinions run counter to those of whichever Big Brother is “in charge.” This is a long-planned program that 9/11 allowed to push to full fruition.

It is a well-documented fact that the US government’s spying capabilities are overwhelming, and that continuous illegal surveillance has always trumped congressional oversight, and the law itself. Obviously, the light reigning-in of criminal covert operations in the post-Watergate 1970s has been completely undone in the decades since.

Investigators such as former NSA operative James Bamford (author of the exposé of the NSA, Body of Secrets) and Mike Ruppert’s Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil have thoroughly detailed the pervasiveness and effectiveness of a wide range of spying and intelligence programs used by intelligence and law enforcement agencies. These include Echelon and PROMIS, which are used by operatives in criminal fashion, as ordered by high-level officials, specifically to get around all oversight.

Completely unaddressed throughout the years of noise over spying and FISA, the Total Information Awareness Program (formerly known as DARPA, and spearheaded by Iran-Contra participant John Poindexter) has found new life as the IARPA program.

Nobody is talking about IARPA. Nobody will.

Welcome to hell, again

The George W. Bush administration seized the White House in 2000 by way of an openly stolen election, then cemented its criminal power into place with the unprecedented 9/11 mass murder, and its two resulting abominations: the fabricated “war on terrorism” (the pretext for endless global war), and the USAPATRIOT Act (the full-scale destruction of the Constitution, and the militarization of the US homeland).

These continuing atrocities were the works of a bipartisan “war on terrorism” consensus, a full partnership at the top echelons, whose overriding agenda is the survival of the criminal racket known as the Anglo-American empire.

The deepening of the war and security state has continued unabated. Under a US Congress with a Democratic Party majority, nothing been done to stop, reverse or undo the world war, boundless US government criminality, open corruption, or the absolute and systematic rape of law itself. Now, particularly with a looming US presidential election, leading members of both political parties have shown their true colors: as flagrant proponents of military-intelligence/“homeland security,” and enthusiastic destroyers of the Constitution.

In The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence, Victor Marchetti and John Marks wrote in 1974, “The clandestine mentality is a mind-set that thrives on secrecy and deception. It encourages professional amorality---the belief that righteous goals can be achieved through the use of unprincipled and normally unacceptable means . . ."

Today, exemplified by actions of the bipartisan US consensus, assisted by an acquiescent and dumbed-down populace, the clandestine mentality is not clandestine. “Professional amorality” is the norm---celebrated openly, and opposed by few.

In other words, your life and all of your communications -- from your emails, your web searches, medical records, and financial information, to your reading this article and clicking this web site -- has been “hoovered up” by the US government’s spying machine, to be used against you at some future time, if the powers that be so choose.

If 9/11, the USAPATRIOT Act, and the relentless destruction of law since 2000 have not already made it abundantly clear, a “Homeland Security” police state within US borders, courtesy of the spy bill, is now complete. Not even the trappings of a democracy remain.

Ah, im so tired of everything i report on this website being just rumor.

Boy Genius Report states it might be likely to happen, according to Merrill Lynch.

Hmm, makes me wonder what they would do with that CDMA network
especially since it has more customers than T's native network.
would it just ditch that highspeed EV-DO? This makes about as much sense as the SprintNextel merger. Could this be T-Mobile's answer to 3G?

I have determined that the time has come to get a new phone. Although the IPhone looks very interesting, I am now approaching the phone and data merge. I don't even have a phone to take pictures with yet! What I was thinking was that if I got a Blackberry, I could do away with my big planner that I carry everywhere to keep track of my daily activities, take notes and jot reminders. After examining the Blackberry from Nextel, I am thinking of switching.

With the Girly Girl store start up came the 3D Agency for models also and trying to keep up on all the email, appointments and contacts is time consuming. Not to mention all the other paperwork that comes from being self employed. I just figured that a Blackberry would help cut down on some of the tasks and be a lot more portable. So what do you think ladies? Should I step forward more into the electronic abyss ? PLEASE send me your honest feedback, especially you brave women who have walked this unknown before me!!

Love and God Bless....Debra

Sprint finally has some (5) Q-Chat phones available. 3 are rugged, 1 is fairly entry-level and 3 are fairly high-end (the yet-to-be-released Moto model has a 2+ megapixel camera). Q-Chat was the original name of the all-CDMA push-to-talk (PTT) service that will replace their iDEN Direct Connect. The new service allows CDMA devices to connect via walkie-talkie to iDEN (Nextel) devices over the Sprint network. This is super important because the iDEN network is already prettydarned crowded and they're going to need to vacate a portion of it covering millions of subscribers. If Sprint would just release a BlackBerry with Q-Chat (which is actually taking over its iDEN predecessor's Direct Connect moniker) they could finally make an honest push to phase out iDEN and somewhat focus themselves.

The question: Is it (way) too little (way) too late?

It seems that at the opening session at CTIA Wireless 2008 (conference involving wireless data), Sprint's CEO dropped a quick comment about a Sprint/Nextel iDEN BlackBerry. This confirms various rumors that date back to February at BlackBerryForums. For those that don't know what iDEN is (I sure didn't), it's a mobile communications technology (like CDMA or GSM) that is mainly used for it's push-to-talk feature. The push-to-talk feature allows for the fastest communication between cellular devices (think walkie-talkie). Most devices can use iDEN as well as another cellular technology. Anyway, back to the BlackBerry. Jibi, of BlackBerry news, posted a few specs of the coming device:

the model number will be the 8350, which means it will be a Curve (or something close to it)

Will launch in late 2008 or early 2009

Wi-Fi

Quite possibly will have OS 4.6 at launch

It's rumored to be antenna-less.

Here's a mock-up photo of the device, courtesy of BBNews:

For 20 years the only ones who have been allowed to profit from the wireless industry have been the major companies that provided the services. That will all be changing on July 18th as Lightyear Alliance launches its very own wireless product.

Lightyear was started in October 2003 by Josh Henderson. It is a subsidiary of Lightyear Network Solutions, which was started in 1993 by Sherman Henderson. Prior to Lightyear Alliance, Lightyear Network Solutions provided top-notch business services to major corporations such as Red Robin restaurants, Outback Steakhouse and JC Penney just to name a few.

With the founding of Lightyear Alliance, the company decided to offer the same first class services to the residential market. Since that time, Lightyear has been on the cutting edge of technology while maintaining its superior level of customer support, provisioning and billing.

Their history in the communication business provides a rich legacy of top-flight service and support to our wireless customers and Wireless Representatives at competitive prices, accomplished in part by a 24-hour seven days a week Network Billing and Maintenance Center.

In addition, their data billing system provides our Wireless Representatives with a direct view into the lifecycle of a wireless customer's account monthly. Post-sale engineering support, project management and ongoing Wireless Representative training and sales support via the back office support center and the Network Operations Center are provided as well.

As a result, Wireless Representatives receive outstanding wireless communications solutions to grow their businesses!

As of July 18, 2008, ordinary individuals will be able to make their dreams a reality with a billion dollar business!

The best residual product ever launched in US!

The best support team in place!

The best marketing opportunity in US history!

(above: my former cell phone collection in Tijuana)

When I started working in Tijuana I remember thinking it somewhat strange yet plausible that some law enforcement officials could have two or three cell phones.

But, honestly, there's something about the border that triggers cell phone creep. Maybe in some cases it's about keeping your criminal contacts separate from your legit contacts, but I also think it's in response to cell phone carrier coverage that constantly slips and slides along the border area. I could never quite predict in Tijuana whether my U.S. work cell phone would be in U.S. local zone or Mexican roaming/international territory.

Eventually, my company gave me a second work cell phone, this one with a Nextel radio. The radios drive people nuts with their beeping sounds (see the Stairs to Nowhere blog post here) but so many people have them in Tijuana that it's almost a sure thing for regular communication. In fact, whenever you hear a Nextel beep everyone within a 5 foot radius is checking their pockets or purses for their Nextels. The radio alternative means you pay a flat service to reach anyone else with a Nextel on either side of the border, and that's far cheaper than an international phone call. Alas, even the Nextel (now Sprint/Nextel) has its black zone areas. So having two work phones - with the radio - guaranteed that I could be reached at any time and vice versa for those crucial breaking news stories.

When I moved to Tijuana, I realized I should probably have a personal phone since I didn't have a land line. So I got a Mexican local cell phone. Towards the end of my time at the paper I got another U.S. "charge it as you go" phone as I started to redirect my life north of the border. So at one time I had four phones to make sure I could meet all my communication needs north or south of the border.

I'm still waiting for the day when someone solves this problem. But in the meantime, I have learned not to rush to any conclusions when I see people walking around here with multiple phones.

Being away from something makes you forget how much you hate it, but today I got to remember how much I hate walmart. It's the "ambience," that creates an atmosphere that I just can't stand.

First off let's deal with the cliental. How come when I went today (Thursday at 2:00 pm) the store had lines out the door? Why weren't any of these people at work? These people are spending money they don't have...and instead are probably using welfare money to buy things they don't need like nextel phones (why do most people on welfare have nextel? is the company supported by the govn't?). You have kids running wild throughout the store and parents not giving a damn. And when was the last time they took showers?

Next it's the actual store. There's food splattered all over the floors, opened packages of food, and dented cans on the shelves. And there always seems to be some type of strange odor emanating from the store. I wouldn't be surprised if there were dead mice under racks of clothes.

I've come to the conclusion to avoid the store at all costs, but if I must, and I do mean MUST, I will only buy brand names. I will not buy anything labeled "Sam's Choice." I would rather pay more for the same items and avoid all of the above at Target.
