1. My blog is my most important and exciting tool to date. I have not only met some wonderful people offline (Chris Brown, Reshma Anand, Organic Frog, Sandrine, Cedric, Steve, Annie Mole… apologies if I have forgotten anyone!) but blogging has also recently changed my life as I am just about to start my new role as a Social Media strategist.

2. Blogging has drastically changed my social media consumption - I created a web 2.0 lanscape last year and it’s very interesting to see how my social media consumption has evolved:

I no longer use Myspace but I am still a huge fan of Facebook and found a few old friends from university on there
I use bloglines a lot more than I did last year
I have at last got round to updating my Linkedin profile and will be using it a lot more in the near future
I am now using Twitter and Plurk which were not even on my radar last year…

3. Everyone is blogging about Twitter vs. Plurk but I still don’t know which one is the best for me. I love the look and feel of Twitter and follow an exciting community of Twitter friends but I get terribly annoyed by the outages. I do not particularly like the look and feel of Plurk but love the Plurk timeline… To be continued

4. Blogline is my fav tool to keep on top of my reading but I also recently discovered snackr, a cool widget that pulls random items from your feeds and scrolls them across your desktop

5. When it comes to my creative side, I use Flickr and Youtube. Although my interaction on both sites is limited, I enjoy posting photos and videos for everyone’s viewing pleasure.

6. Aggregators are currently missing in my tool box! Webjam, Friendfeed (don’t really like the look of it!), Netvibes – which do you recommend and why?

7. Facebook and French website Copains d’avant are a great way to easily keep in touch with your friends and even find lost friends and acquaintances. I recently hooked up with one of my friends from school in France that I hadn’t seen in 13 years!

Favoriete dingen

Dingen 1 t/m 3 gingen over het maken van je eigen weblog om over de cursus te kunnen schrijven. Een heel waardevol iets. Niet alleen leuk omdat ik altijd al vage plannen had om een blog te starten, maar ook omdat je door iets te schrijven gedwongen wordt na te denken over wat je bekeken en waar je mee geoefend hebt. Voor na de cursus heb ik alvast een 'echt' blog aangemaakt; de tijd zal uitwijzen of ik ook zonder cursus schrijfzin kan maken! ;-)

DIngen 4 en 5 waren voor mij bekend terrein; RSS-feeds en Netvibes had ik al meermalen in de organisatie geprobeerd te slijten, zonder veel succes. Enkelen lijken er nu enthousiast over, maar velen zien het nog steeds als tijdvreter, terwijl het juist bedoeld is als tijdbespaarder!

Dingen 6 t/m 8 hielden het spelen met plaatjes/foto's in en dit deed de organisatie gonzen; in koffiepauzes ging het over niets anders dan dat. Onvermoede talenten kwamen naar boven en mensen begonnen de cursus leuk te vinden. Hier heb ik wel wat geleerd, aangezien ik een aantal tools nog niet kende. Leuk om te onthouden!

Ding 10 ging over Delicious en ook daar had ik al een account, dat ik maar eens opgefrist heb. Het nut werd in de organisatie wel erkend; met name voor collega's van de informatiebalie. Zou het informatiebalie-account er al zijn?

Dingen 11 t/m 13 waren de wiki's en online kantoortoepassingen, voor mij weer relatief nieuw. Een wiki gebruik ik nu voor een clubje vriendinnen om een weekendje te plannen, heel handig al vinden zij het maar futuristisch! Google Docs vind ik dan op één of andere manier minder leuk, dat zou ik zelf niet zo snel gebruiken. Veel ideeën kwamen bij mensen op bij deze Dingen.

Dingen 14 t/m 16 waren weer appeltje, eitje omdat ik ze al kende. Instant messaging, podcasts en YouTube hadden geen geheimen meer voor mij. Toch leuk om nu zo af en toe een korte chat te hebben met collega's op de andere locaties via de Gmail-chat. Ook bij deze Dingen verzonnen veel collega's interessante ideeën!

Dingen 17 t/m 20 boden mij weer wat nieuws; zoveel web 2.0-sites als er bestaan! Beetje te veel naar mijn idee, laat dat web 3.0 maar komen waarbij alles geïntegreerd is; ook (zelfs) ik word moe van het alsmaar inloggen overal. LibraryThing vond ik wel leuk, maar heb me er niet aangemeld. Sociale netwerken kende ik al (Bibliotheek 2.0, Hyves, Facebook, de eigen bieblv.ning) en Last.fm vond ik echt geweldig! Heb de speler gedownload en ik hoop dat ik straks fantastische adviezen zal krijgen over andere artiesten en evenementen.

Ding 21 deed mij vooral kwijlen over wat andere biebs hebben en wij (nog) niet. Van de woordenwolk van de Aquabrowser word ik nog niet zo enthousiast, maar het aanleggen van favorietenlijstjes, toevoegen van tags, maken van recensies maken mij wel blij! Ik was niet de enige met bedenkingen over de Aquabrowser! Staan wij hierin alleen? Als wij dit vinden, vinden onze klanten het dan ook? Worden zij blij van een woordenwolk?

Ding 22 was een nadenkDing over de bibliotheek van de toekomst, waarbij weer een aantal collega's inspirerende gedachten op hun blog zette. Ook collega's van andere bibliotheken trouwens.

Dingen 9 en 23 hebben voor reflectie gezorgd wat twee goede momenten waren.

Elk Ding had weer andere effecten in de organisatie, zoals ik hier en daar al schreef hierboven. Dat is dan ook wel leuk aan de cursus; hij blijkt erg afwisselend te zijn. Sommige Dingen vind je leuk, andere minder, maar je leert ze wél allemaal kennen.

Bijna iedereen (39 man/vrouw) deed mee aan de cursus. Dit was niet geheel op vrijwilligheid gebaseerd en er was dan ook best wat weerstand in het begin en eigenlijk bleef het er altijd wel in enige mate gedurende de cursus. Het kostte natuurlijk ook wel behoorlijk wat tijd. We hadden twee uur per week gekregen (begeleiders drie uur) maar dat was voor de meesten bij lange na niet genoeg. Bovendien hebben fulltimers niet altijd de tijd binnen hun werktijd om aan de cursus te besteden. Ikzelf kreeg zoveel energie van de cursus en het enthousiasme dat er bij velen ontstond dat ik behoorlijk wat tijd heb gestoken in het volgen van alle blogs en zoveel mogelijk te reageren. Ik weet zelf dat het leuk is om reacties te krijgen en dat gun ik een ander ook. En ja, ik heb ook nog een sociaal leven en sport ook. De nachten waren gewoon iets korter dan gebruikelijk! ;-) Bij velen kwam dit aspect van de cursus, het bij elkaar kijken en reageren, in het gedrang door het gebrek aan tijd, wat erg jammer was. Misschien is hier meer ruimte voor als de opdrachten sneller te maken zijn!

Zoals ik bij Ding 9 al schreef, was het hartverwarmend te merken dat de cursus verschijnselen als betrokkenheid, verbondenheid, samenwerking en collegialiteit deed versterken. Misschien heeft het wel wat communicatieschotten weten te verminderen... ;-) Ook mooi te zien dat onvermoede (soms deels vermoede) talenten naar boven kwamen drijven, zoals schrijftalent, creatief talent met foto's en talent voor het verzinnen van goede ideeën!

Erg trots ben ik op de collega's die ik zelf heb begeleid (zie zijbalk voor de blogs) en die de cursus allen met volle overtuiging voltooid hebben! Fantastisch!

Dat ideeën worden uitgewerkt door een Werkgroep Web 2.0 en dat de beste daarvan worden uitgevoerd. En dat de taken, bevoegdheden en verantwoordelijkheden van deze werkgroep worden vastgelegd, zodat het kader duidelijk is en binnen dat kader creatief gewerkt kan worden!

Verbetersuggesties

Het kan natuurlijk altijd beter! We zijn tamelijk vroeg ingestapt in de 23 Dingen-cursus maar ondanks dat vind ik dat de cursus op zich goed in elkaar zit. In onze planning vond ik uiteindelijk het aantal pauzeweken teveel, waardoor mensen te lang stil stonden en moeite hadden de draad weer op te pakken. Een veelgehoorde opmerking is ook dat de teksten van de 23 Dingen-site te lang en uitgebreid waren voor sommigen. Zelf las ik die tekst diagonaal door en keek vooral naar websites die in de oefeningen genoemd werden. Maar ik kan me voorstellen dat als het helemaal nieuw voor je is, je wèl alles wil lezen om het goed te begrijpen. Ook zijn 23 Dingen misschien wel veel, volgen sommigen. Maar ja, zo is de cursus. Zou het misschien kunnen dat de Nederlandse versie zwaarder is dan de Amerikaanse? Ik ben eigenlijk ook nog voor het toevoegen van een 24e Ding: gamen. Een laatste veelgehoorde opmerking in mijn organisatie is de introductie van Rob, die voor een aantal mensen te snel ging, waardoor zij het Spaans benauwd kregen. Dit had ook te maken met de verschillen in kennisniveau van de medewerkers, maar daar moet je natuurlijk rekening mee houden als je voor een diverse groep spreekt.

Ik ben blij dat we het gedaan hebben zoals we het gedaan hebben en ben apetrots op het resultaat: bijna alle cursisten zullen op tijd klaar zijn en op 1 juli hun certificaat in ontvangst nemen. Dat heb ik andere biebs nog niet zien/horen doen! En het vervolg aan deze cursus (een Werkgroep Web 2.0) komt er ook zeker, dat heeft de directeur toegezegd. De zeven coaches van de BLV kunnen zich met recht SUPERCOACHES noemen!

Tot slot

Er is een tijd van komen en een tijd van gaan. En met het afsluiten van deze cursus sluit ik ook mijn bibliotheekcarrière af. Ik vond het een mooie en waardige afsluiting zo.

Ik vermoed dat ik mij nog regelmatig in digitale bibliotheekkringen zal laten zien en het laatste woord over web 2.0 heb ik nog niet geschreven. Ik stap hiervoor binnenkort over op mijn nieuwe blog, genaamd Webgrrl. Daar staat nu nog niet veel op trouwens.

Ik zeg dus geen vaarwel (dat klinkt ook zo dramatisch) maar tot ziens! :-)

Hace unos meses escribí un post que mostraba ¿Cómo se trabajaba en Google? . El desenfado y la informalidad que allí se respiran no son patrimonio exclusivo de Google. Existen numerosas empresas que articulan, como parte de su ethos organizacional, el humanismo laboral, son organizaciones en las que sus oficinas dan lugar a espacios en los que se respiran aires de una libertad; atributo este tan necesario para la despertar creatividad dinámica, la creatividad en acción. A continuación los dejo con algunos ejemplos de otras organizaciones que entienden de que va la época actual. La finalidad es promover estos ejemplos para que sean fruto de la imitación por otras tantas empresas que aun no entienden que el mundo ha cambiado y lo seguirá haciendo. Es mi profundo deseo de que estos ambientes plenos de espontaneidad sean recreados en otras partes. Al fin y al cabo ¿trabajamos para vivir, vivimos para trabajar o trabajamos mientras la vida se sucede?.

Fundada en marzo del 2006, Twitter es una red social de "micro-blogging" que permite a los usuarios poner entradas de menos de 140 caracteres a traves de 2 métodos posibles: via web o a través de mensajes SMS.

Se trata de la red social del momento, donde también pueden encontrarme. Fundada por Mark Zuckerberg es 4 de febrero del 2004. En un primer momento existía para uso de los estudiantes de la Universidad de Harvard. En 2 semana, la mitad de los estudiantes de suscribieron cuando otras escuelas comenzaron a demandar sus participación. Zuckerberg reclutó a sus amigos Dustin Moskowitz y Chris Hughes para ayudarlo a montar la empresa y en 4 meses sumaron 30 escuelas a la red. Dado el éxito se movieron al Silicon Valley, a Palo Alto donde rentaron una oficina. Allí conocieron a Sean Parker que los contactó con el inversor Peter Thiel, cofundador de PayPal y socio de Founders Funds. Thiel invirtió 500,000 dólares. El resto es ya conocido.

Lanzada en el 2005 Reddit es un sitio de noticias seleccionadas socialmente, similar a digg.com. Permite exhibir noticias a partir de un conjunto de preferencias personales. Tuesday afternoon was the hands-on course by Guus van den Brekel and Dorine Kieft-Wondergem (UMCG) . All Continuing Education Courses (CEC) were in the National Library of Health Science Terkko.

Upfront I had the idea that by following this course I could learn more in this one afternoon then when I would have tried everything by myself for weeks. At the end of the course I was happy that I had chosen this course. I don't know everything now, but the course has given me more insights, possibilities and consequences to think thoroughly about and that is what this whole conference is about for me. Exchanging knowledge and experiences with collegues and friends.

So what was the course about? Guus and Dorine set 5 rules for this course:
- a practical approach;
- learn from eachother;
- can do all these things;
- pragmatic basis;
- keep on learning.

After a short introduction by all participants we went on with the main focus of this training "power to the user (and the librarians)". It is all about visibility of the library. There are so many tools out on the web, ready for everybody to use. These tools are webbased so you don't need your IT department. (Everybody YEAH!!!!:-)
Libraries should go and get out on the web, were the users are. Even making libraries services portable as many users now have portable devices.

Examples of these tools are toolbars which Guus has made for many EAHIL libraries. There is even an EAHIL toolbar available!

The rest of the course focussed on Netvibes. Netvibes is the ideal and free tool for making a personalized information page for the library and all of its users, by getting a so called 'Universe'. (You can find an example of the UMCG universe here). Netvibes can not only be used for reading and collecting RSS feeds, but also for saving bookmarks and links to sites of interest. Favorites don't travel and are not updated. When using a webbased tools like netvibes they do!

You also have the possibility to include widgets, ie. a searchbox for searching PubMed, or a link with Facebook. By picking the widgets you want you can build your own personal page.

Guus and Dorine build a universe for EAHIL 2008. (You can also find more information on the course on that site. For years people talked about "portal" and how the big search companies like Yahoo and Google were beginning to allow users to personalize their own page. Imagine, a page not just customized based on your selections but actually personalized. You could even drag/drop the boxes to where you wanted them.

I was taken with my iGoogle page. It had my mail, calendar, news feeds, subscription feeds, weather -- all the essentials. I added little post-it notes that contained all my airline and hotel account numbers. It was my personal portal. Then, one day, it disappeared. Literally! I would try to reach my iGoogle page but the regular old Google search would appear instead. That was my first taste of "losing" MY personal information.

I asked around about other portal pages and ended up with Netvibes. I created a new portal page with Netvibes including all my old personal gadgets and many more. Then, I started messing around with my public Netvibes page called your Universe. See my public universe here.

I'm now completely taken with Netvibes. Slowly I'm moving those feeds and such that were on my private portal page over to my public universe. I've started compiling links and information that I find useful. Next, I intend to use a wiki-type application to build base plans for marketing, communication and Web strategy development.

From a social perspective, I'm much more comfortable with sharing what I find and learn. Others do the same and we all get smarter.

After looking up some information I learned that these things have been around since 1996. However I don't believe they really started taking off until 2005 and I haven't really incorporated them into my online experience until this week.

Okay, so what am I talking about?

For those out there who are NOT familiar with this concept, when I say personalized home pages I am referring to things like iGoogle, My Yahoo, Netvibes etc... These are all pages you can customize with content that YOU choose so that when you log onto the internet you are no longer exposed to whatever someone else deemed worthy. Instead, you are the master of your domain and control your experience which is what makes the web so great in the first place.

Your page can have a local weather section, a NY Times section, your local paper, local movie times, your favorite sports team can have its own place, all of the blogs you like to check out will be right there and updated etc.. I really can't think of a reason not to have one of these things set as your homepage.

Obviously for websites and bloggers the goal is to get as many subscribers as possible to your content in order to indicate a large influence and impact. I can proudly say that Feedburner is currently indicating that this blog has a mighty 11 subscriptions.

Watch out Perez Hilton...or not.

This is just another example of the web empowering people to create their own experience much like the iPod enables people to basically program their own commercial free radio station. Unlike old media platforms like radio and TV, consumers are truly driving the market online which is another reason it is so exciting and great.

With radio, advertisers are determining everything you hear. If a song or personality is deemed offensive or inappropriate for a certain demographic the advertiser is trying to reach based on some outdated and mind-numbing research it is never going to get airtime. Have you ever been asked what you think of a personality or a song on the radio?

I haven't.
