The tool shapes the hand.

A posh way of saying that if the only tool you have is a hammer then every problem looks like a nail.

I am writing this on a Nokia N800, a little internet tablet, kind of like a Linux based iPhone but without the phone bit just wifi, Skype and Gizmo, Firefox and access to a large repository of free software.

The thing I have found most interesting about using such a device is how it shapes my approach to the internet. The internet is no longer something remote, locked away behind a computer that will take ages to boot, but it is now immediate, personal, readable!

I am not a big fan of the ebook concept, it threatens to leave the past mutable and the present controlled, but as I type these words and my brain nods sagely I can feel my paws twitch as they dream of an infinite library.

This evening I got to meet Reggie Suplido. Reggie is the man behind two very key mobile computing Web sites that I've visited in the past - 1SRC: which was a blog I regularly visited when I was a Palm Treo owner, and Internet Tablet Talk: the premier Nokia Internet Tablet forum that I visited every single day when I was an N800 user. I had no idea he lived only a few miles from my house here in WV!

Reggie also did a brief write up of our meeting on his /mobility Web site.

One of those I've been using is on the Maemo (Nokia Linux OS) platform itself called Mauku which primarily started life out as a Jaiku client then evolved Twitter support. After a quick Q and A with the developer, I've tested the app myself and can say I've been impressed with it so far. One area of improvement I would suggest would be to give each 'tweet' its own reply/delete icon instead of consigning it to the bottom of the app. A minor issue on an otherwise perfect app.

The ap itself is available for the Nokia Maemo N8X0 platforms from it's official site here: http://mauku.henrikhedberg.com/

Just read a post at NokNok.tv about Jeppe. Incredible how Plug and Play the world is becoming....

Jeppe is built with modest components but still has quite a range of functionality

This is what Jeppe can do (as of July 2008):

Make video calls with two-way audio, one-way video (from Jeppe to controller)

Move according to six pre-defined gestures

Move around when controlled with a Nokia Internet Tablet in the same WLAN: not remotely, yet

Awesome, right? Not bad for a gizmo that is the equivalent of a Pentium II PC. Sure, the iPhone now has a lot more power and apps, but the N800 is more configurable (2 SD slots, replaceable battery, and lots of open source software being developed), and I prefer that versatility. Anyway, I digress. The other neat application that I've been using has been Grumby, which lets me tap into the virtual feed of channels available for the Chumby. So now when I get home, I turn on the wifi, plug the N800 in, and let Grumby tell me the time of day, the current weather conditions, the latest news I care about, and some random webcam feeds around the globe.

Oh, and in case there are any NIT users out there, I'm well aware of other means of checking out music and movies (Canola, Kadu, etc). I just prefer simpler programs that load quicker and don't hog up my battery power. That may change when more apps are tailored for the Diablo build.

Looking for a easy, step by step or tutorial style site to help you?

Well you prayers have been answered, new to the scene is Internet Tablet Talk's sister site Tablet Scene http://www.tabletscene.com/

If you have already registered with ITT you can use the same username and password for both sites, no need to re-register for Tablet Scene.

Check it out and let me know what you think. For beginner Tablet users do you find the Tablet Scene site more useful than the Internet Tablet Talk one?

Rotate the N800 screen to landscape or portrait mode by using the power on button or if you have a N810 when the slide opens or closes.

SlideRotate for Diablo
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19447

Install using the .install file and then once installed, open the oss-xterm and run:

sudo gainroot
/root/install-xrandr-kernel

I've also added rotate-sb-plugin to my N800 which is a statusbar applet to set screen rotation in whatever orientation you want, left, right, upside down or normal without having to press the power on button.

NOTE: If you still want to use the power on button, just press it twice and the Device Mode menu appears.

An interesting post on Daring Fireball about the speed of Javascript on the iPhone.

It's always dangerous to generalise from such things but if I run the test on my N800 "Diablo" running Firefox then I get the following results - 0.394, 0.078, 0.353, 0.65, 0.250.

Apart from the string allocation figure the results are about 0.5x those of the iPhone with the latest Webkit.

Unlike the iPhone, the N800 does support Flash but to be honest I tend to turn it off save when accessing particular sites as Flash ads reduce the overall web browsing experience.

If I generalise wildly on such only mildly related benchmarks I would guess that Flash on the iPhone would be completely possible and would support most sites but it would still have to deal with those blasted Flash ads which both slow the browsing experience and which are very irritating indeed on a small screen.

Changed my "puzzle" program (I still don't know how this app is called).
Instead of describing changes let me re-introduce you to it:

When you start the program, you are presented with such UI:

Left side is occupied by a word you have to type in kana and its translation + two buttons I will describe later.

Right side is occupied by buttons with kana characters on them and acts just as on-screen keyboard, you tap on buttons - you type text. Only keys required to enter correct answer are shown. Thus said, there may be two buttons, there may be ten buttons.

If there is too much buttons, they are split to more than one columns.
BIG FAT NOTE: the screenshot above is obsolete as there is no "reset" button + there are non-unique keys on on-screen keyboard, but still, code splitting keyboard by columns still lives in today's code.

Now, to the buttons on the left side:
"Reset" - it clears what you typed. This is useful if you accidentally (or not) clicked wrong button.
"Check" - checks correctness of your answer.

All these changes helped me to:
* delete a lot of lines of code
* make you click on screen less times

When I was studying Chinese I had a nice program written by myself which was showing you chinese characters along with their translation or pinyin so you had to pick the right answer.
Here's its screenshot:

I didn't save its source code and I missed this application a lot, so this evening I decided to make a clone.
It features python, pygtk, sqlite and the most terrible code ever. If you want me to give it to you, I have to clean it up and rewrite some logic inside (ph34r).

First you need to select JLPT level you want to drill (yes you cannot select few levels at the same time, lame):

Then you need to answer its questions. What to ask - kanji, kana, or translation is up to random in your system - I find it to be ok:

And when you don't answer correct, program points you to the right answer:
