Desde 2001, o mercado de celulares passou a crescer em ritmo acelerado, com isso o número de marcas e modelos lançados no mercado também se multiplicou. O aumento do investimento das empresas em atender as necessidades de seus usuários tornou-se um requisito importante para se manter no mercado. Com a busca por novas soluções, a tecnologia multi-touch passou a ser uma solução viável em alguns casos. Dentre esses casos está o celular iPhone, da empresa Apple que foi lançado no ano de 2007.

O iPhone tornou-se um referencial no campo de interação multi-touchscreen em dispositivos móveis, pois, além de ser um dos pioneiros, também obteve uma divulgação mais abrangente e focada exatamente em sua forma de interação diferenciada. Através de diversos vídeos veiculados pela empresa e a apresentação ao público seis meses antes de seu lançamento, a Apple, desenvolvedora do aparelho, contribuiu para disseminação e “alfabetização” deste novo conceito de interação em dispositivos móveis.
Já existem no mercado alguns dispositivos móveis com tela sensível ao toque, porém o iPhone agrega funcionalidades que vão de reconhecimento de gestos até a identificação do posicionamento do aparelho. Entretanto as preocupações não são apenas com os usuários de celulares sensíveis ao toque, mas, principalmente aqueles que já estão acostumados com os botões físicos existentes na maioria dos aparelhos.

No caso de ser fixa, a área de interação pode situar-se no modo horizontal (formato mesa) como o Microsoft Surface ou vertical, onde esta última viabiliza a aplicação em paredes virtuais e quiosques de consulta.
Com relação à interpretação dos toques, as limitações podem estar relacionadas há certo número de dedos, reconhecimento de uma ou duas mãos e o reconhecimento de gestos em realizações de atividades específicas. Nesse post, estarei colocando um breve histórico sobre a tecnologia Multi-Touch. A minha base principal de informação foi o Bill Buxton (http://www.billbuxton.com/multitouchOverview.html ) que é uma das referências mundiais no desenvolvimento dessa tecnologia.

O conceito de múltiplos toques já era utilizado nos teclados, quando se pressionavam duas teclas simultaneamente para se executar uma função mais complexa de forma rápida, como, por exemplo, pressionar o botão SHIFT e uma letra do alfabeto para deixá-la maiúscula.

Os primeiros protótipos com tecnologia multi-touchscreen resumiam-se em terminais com monitores CRT que possibilitavam manipular simples objetos gráficos com os dedos, isto, com uma boa resposta de tempo. O ano era 1984 e a empresa que subsidiava as pesquisa era a Bell Labs.

Dois anos depois, a Universidade de Toronto fez um estudo sobre os dois diferentes compostos que realizavam tarefas através de interfaces bi-manuais, envolvendo o controle contínuo de cada mão. O primeiro estudo consistia no posicionamento, ou seja, uma forma de avançar para uma determinada localização na tela com uma mão, enquanto o seu tamanho era ajustado. O segundo baseava-se na seleção, onde era possível navegar para um determinado local em um documento e fazer a seleção com a outra mão.

Os resultados demonstraram que os contínuos controles bi-manuais foram mais fáceis para os usuários, e resultaram em melhorias significativas em termos de desempenho e de aprendizagem.

No mesmo ano de 1986, o Macintosh II e SE foram lançados. Os mesmos permitiam a entrada plug-and-play de vários dispositivos ao mesmo tempo, como por exemplo: teclados, joysticks, mouses, etc. Mas, infelizmente o software não os diferenciava, fazendo com que todos executassem a mesma função sem nenhuma diferenciação. Então o grupo de estudo sobre a tecnologia na Universidade de Toronto, entrou em contato com a Apple, e apresentou o desenvolvimento de uma solução que permitiu o manuseio de dois dispositivos diferentes de forma independente, com funções específicas. O resultado foi bastante interessante, pois, possibilitou uma interação com dispositivos distintos de forma diferenciada, sem alterações no sistema operacional. A tecnologia foi economicamente e tecnologicamente viável, porém a Apple nunca teve lucros com está aplicação.

Em 1991, Bill Buxton e seu grupo na Xerox PARC, estudavam a viabilidade de desenvolver uma tela LCD como dispositivo de entrada e saída para ações simultâneas. Outro projeto desenvolvido no mesmo ano foi o Digital Desk, que tinha como base visual a projeção de imagens em um plano. Através de técnicas ópticas e acústicas, havia o reconhecimento das duas mãos e os dedos, e sua interação com as imagens projetadas. Esse projeto foi bastante significativo para a evolução do multi-touchscreen, pois demonstravam claramente os conceitos de interação da tecnologia, e sua liberdade na execução de tarefas através de gestos intuitivos.

O primeiro celular smartphone da história foi o Simon, desenvolvido pela IBM e Bell South em 1992. Esse telefone não possuía botões físicos, e sim uma interface gráfica toda em touch-screen. Suas aplicações eram bem avançadas para sua época, entretanto não foi viavelmente comercial.

A partir de 1992, a japonesa Wacom introduzia no mercado as mesas digitalizadoras (tablets), que permitia o usuário ter a liberdade de interagir com o computador através de uma caneta em uma superfície sensível, onde a mesma permitia desenhar, com diversos tipos de pressão e estilos. No começo as mesas só possibilitavam um único toque, porém evoluiu para o manuseio com duas mãos simultaneamente.

Em 1995, a Input Research Group estava desenvolvendo o Graspable, que consistia em um desktop digital que permitia a identificação, localização e rotação de objetos físicos, onde o movimento dos mesmos resultava em ações virtuais.

Em 1998, acadêmicos, John Elias e Wayne Westerman contribuíram significativamente para o estudo de interpretação de múltiplos gestos com os dedos, realizados pelos usuários e interpretados pela máquina. Posteriormente, o domínio pelos resultados dos estudos foi adquirido pela Apple.

A Universidade de Toronto desenvolveu no ano de 1999 o Portfolio Wall, que apesar de não ser multi-touch, realizava funções bem mais elaboradas que seus similares touchscreen. No ano de 2001, a Mitsubishi Research Labs de Cambridge, apresentou o DiamondTouch Table. O grande diferencial desse projeto é a possibilidade de interação e identificação de pequenos grupos de pessoas, interpretando a ação individual de diversos usuários simultaneamente. Além da interação coletiva, a interface pode interpretar uma série gestos intuitivos realizados pelos usuários. Três anos depois a Universidade de Toronto estava desenvolvendo um sistema mais robusto, que possibilitava uma série de técnicas interativas de multi-finger (mais de um dedo), multi-hand (mais de uma mão) e multi-person (mais de uma pessoa) em uma única tela táctil.

Being the DIY freak that I am I could not get it past myself to buy a power supply for the lasers from Aixiz, so once I get mine working ill post schematics if anyone wants to duplicate it. Its a really simple LM317 circuit.

Microsoft has put a lot of effort into giving the interface a polished look with smooth transitions & animations, gradients, and lush colors. Overall, everything was intuitive and easy to use as you grabbed, pinched, and slid objects across the screen.

Most of the applications are easy to learn mini-games, and social/party games, which makes sense given that they are meant for a bar setting. Each table has network connectivity so apps can talk to each other and access the internet.

One of the more interesting apps I used was one called Flirt. There are cameras pointed at each of the Surface tables around the bar, and you can send messages to the other tables. I guess the idea is if you see someone you are interested in, you can send them a pickup line through the table. My lines never worked in person so I don't think a creepy text message saying I'm watching them on a camera would help.

They also have a bowling game called High Roller which is obviously not meant to be a simulation.

This is definitely a first generation attempt and will require quite a bit more tweaking before it is perfected. Several of the apps would not load and I encountered some issues with the touch interface (mostly while using the maps). At one point I was able to hold my hands an inch away from the table and was still able to move the maps around.

Hopefully Microsoft can work out the initial kinks, I think the Surface has a lot of potential for building interactive applications.
