One of the groundbreaking differences between the iPhone and all other cellular phones is the App Store. You can bet that RIM, Nokia, et al are hard at work on a similar system.

Here's the app's I've got loaded today:

Flashlight - Turns out to be fairly useful when lost in the dark.

Bloomberg - more detailed stock info than the built-in app.

Monkeyball - Fun, but the motion sensing is not well done. These guys should talk to the Labyrinth guys to see how to do motion sensing properly.

Shazam - This is just cool.

Weatherbug - OK app. Better weather forcasts than the built-in weather app.

Wordpress - cool - but it would be pretty difficult to type a REAL blog entry here.

WritingPad - Interesting to see people inventing new input paradigms. This one is so so.

Remote - Cool, but it would be great if it worked with FrontRow on my TV's Mac Mini.

Jott - Jott is a very cool service, and this app is well done.

AirMe - I LOVE what this app SHOULD do, if ONLY it did it reliably. I'm hoping they release a new version soon.

Labyrinth - THE COOLEST APP. This is what I show people when they wonder what the fuss is about.

TouchCalc - OK.

SpeakEasy - Nice audio recorder but doesn't upload yet - which is functionality I'd love.

Tuner - Nice to have a radio in your phone.

AccuFuel - Bit of a pain to enter the fuel info, and a pain to configure. Km's vs Miles vs liters per km, etc.

ezimba - Interesting. The basic need I had was to crop photos, and I couldn't find it after quite a bit of searching. I know it MUST be there...

eReader - I had an account already so this was a no-brainer. I WISH I could override the motion sensor so I could read while lying in bed...

VNC - Cool just because you can.

Enigmo - Nicely done app. Another showcase app.

Holdem - I'm not into poker enough to appreciate this app.

Dice Bag - This app sucks. I was hoping for a nice simulation of dice rolling. All it does is display a number in the corner of the screen. TRY HARDER GUYS.

Crash Cart - Cool. My kids love this app - but the motions sensing is not as nice as I'd like to see.

OneTap - Very nice movie finder. Lots of nice features.

Remember The Milk - Not strictly an iPhone app, but SO WELL DONE that I'm including it. Nice.

Scrabble - I play this more than anything. The first version sucked HUGELY and crashed EVERY TIME you used it. The recent update is much improved. Also, they've improved the load time - but it's still spending WAY TOO LONG showing me logos and startup screens.

Audio Rec. Guitar Toolkit - Nice app.

WeightTrack - Nice enough - but my phone isn't near my scale.

NetShare - I'm AMAZED this is allowed, and that this works. I downloaded it immediately, before it's deleted from the App Store. Hopefully Rogers can't detect that I'm using this (of course, I never do.)

Exposure - Nice app - I wish I could upload from the phone to Flickr using this.

Sketches - It would be nice to be able to have larger drawing surfaces. Nicely done.

Well, it's been over a week now with the iPod touch apps and I thought I'd share some of my favorites. If you've been like me you can't stop looking at the app store and downloading new apps to give them a shot. Also trying to get rid of ones I don't like so I don't have tons of screens to flip through. I'm actually doing this blog from my iPod touch wordpress app! Score! Well here they are:

BEST-
Enigmo- tons of fun
Monkey Ball- impressive graphics and gameplay
Crash bandicoot- great use of the accelerometer
Spinner- awesome
Banner Free-Fun to make banners(Who wants to make a belt buckle that will hold the iPhone-Don't steal my idea and not give me some credit or advertising)
Bubbles-Just plain fun
Facebook-Works great
Phone Saber-Is very responsive to movement
Remote-I can control everyone at my works iTunes and upset them. So much fun.
Scratch-Its a very cool concept, mixing songs with a record to scratch sounds over it. I want to be able to scratch the actual song.
Tap Tap- One Player and Two player! Pretty fun
Aurora Feint- Great gameplay(although I stink at it) and AWESOME soundtrack

WORST:
Twitterriffic- horrible laggy display
Maze- boring
Wordpress- please fix the side view so I can type faster
To be quite honest I just deleted several apps I found useless and at this moment I'm too tired to search them out and let you know which one's they are

The Nintendo Wii is definitely the best games console for kids. But what are the best (and worst) games for children to play on it. Lots of the reviews I read focussed on serious game players but I have three primary school children (aged 9 to 6) and here are the games we love the best:

1. Mario Kart

A fantastically designed game. With amazing graphicsm very catchy sound and options to race on your own, with friends in the room or people all around the world. It comes with a wii wheel - which is basically a plastic wheel casing for the wii remote. You can play with up to four players on screen at any one time. You don't need to buy an extra wheel as with a bit of practice you can use a normal wii remote on its own - alternatively you can use the wii remote with nunchuk. You need quite a big screen to be able to play four player as the screen divides into four - but it is a great game nonetheless. With motorbikes and lots of extra characters and vehicles to unlock there is lots of replay value even after you have unlocked all 32 beautiful circuits. It is a great game for the whole family to play together. This was my favourite game on the Nintendo DS - so not only is this great fun for the kids its a great game for Mum and Dad too! It is £34.98 on amazon - and they have stock at the moment.

2. Wii Play

A great way to buy an wii extra controller and get some fun games too. ( A wii controller costs £25 anyway so you are only paying £4 for this game.) My kids really like playing the table tennis, cow racing, tank shooting and the fishing game. Great for primary school aged children who want to play a quick game with their siblings or mates. All the game are two player - no four player games sadly. The following mini games come with wii play:

Play an updated version of the NES classic, Duck Hunt

Table Tennis

Laser Hockey

Wii Billiards

Fishing game

Wii Pose

Find Mii game

3. Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz

The main game doesn't get much play in our household but there are 50 party games (multiplayer mini games) that keep them entertained. Four children can play at once on games like:

frog racing;(jolt the wii remote upside down to race frogs up a hill)
asteroid shooting; (aim the wii remote at the screen like a laser pointer to shoot asteroids)
basketball shooting: (aim and shoot)
submarine game:(steer a submarine around an underwater landscape)

The games makes full use of the the wii remote's flexibility. This is a fun game to have out as entertainment at a birthday party. With some great bright colours and funky music this game is a real hit in our household. A couple of the mini games need more than one nunchuk controller. Its reduced to £21.98 on amazon.

4. Sonic and the Magic ring

Again the main game is not the main attraction but the 40 mini games. There are scores of games including: spin steel survival ( you have to spin a ball on a chain to knock people off towers); mine kart racing, they can take a little time to get used to but it will keep the kids coming back from more. We used this game at a birthday party to entertain 4 children as there is a race mode that means the four children compete over multiple mini games for an overall competition - including a pirate themed progress chart which went down well.Amazingly amazon are selling this for the absolute steal of: £12.99 (reduced from £39.99)

There's been many noted problems with the latest iPhone 2.0 activation and the 3g iphone activation. I actually was able to download and install it Friday morning around 7:15am. In total it took about 45 minutes for the download, iPhone sync, backup, install, validation, activation, and data copy. The good thing was it was all automated via iTunes.

Once 2.0 was loaded on my first gen iPhone I immediately bought/downloaded and installed Monkey Ball. Its Sega's cool new iPhone game that is getting a lot of attention. Its a pretty fun game, but I haven't been able to get past the level with no walls yet. I could be in trouble as this is set to easy....

As you know by now, the iPhone App Store has launched. Above is a screenshot of the iPhone apps that I have downloaded so far. This is my quick take on the Apps that are my favorites so far and that I think have the most promise, starting with the best.

Pandora

This is an iPhone version of the browser-based Internet radio service. One of the weaknesses I always thought with the iPod was the lack of radio stations. What if I just want to listen to the newest songs in a radio format without having to browse through songs as I would have to on iTunes? Pandora solves this problem, which I think is even more useful on the go than on a PC. You can "like" songs and create your own radio stations just as you could on the PC version of the service. Best of all it surprisingly works fairly well on Edge, with only a short pause between songs. I agree with others, it's one of my favorites so far.

iTunes Remote

This allows you to control your iTunes from your iPhone. Great idea from Apple. This is clearly the beginning of Apple's home entertainment system strategy. This makes the Apple TV much more interesting to me.

Shazam

Shazam allows you to put your iPhone up to a radio (or anything playing a song) if you hear a song that you like. Shazam will identify the song and give you the option to purchase the song on iTunes and, if available, provides a link to a YouTube music video. It worked perfectly for my test on Lupe Fiasco's "Superstar' and even my test on the relatively obscure Zion I's "The Bay." Not sure how much I would actually use it, but it's still a pretty innovative idea. I also tried Midomi, which is similar, but also claims to identify songs if you sing into the iPhone. I didn't try the singing feature, but I tried the test with a song from my computer, but it said the system was busy. I guess it must be crashing with all the traffic today.

Loopt

One of the most promising areas with mobile is location based services. Loopt can connect you with nearby restaurants, bars, free wifi locations, based on the iPhone's GPS feature. It can also show you where your friends are nearby and the restaurants or other businesses they have reviewed nearby are. Loopt also provides reviews from Yelp. Yelp's separate iPhone app is also pretty good. It doesn't provide location-based social networking, but it does provide location-based searches of, for example, the best pizza restaurant closest to you.

Monkey Ball

Unlike the others, Monkey Ball, based on the Sega game, costs $9.99. It's not the best game ever created, but it is notable for its use of the iPhone's motion sensors. It works like the Nintendo Wii by rolling a monkey based on your tilting of the iPhone. This motion sensor-based gaming should be a huge area for app development in the future for the iPhone.

Parece plágio né? A Nintendo já faz

Quer saber como ficou o game? Clique em "more"

Partidas!

O game também traz powers-up.

XD

Modo Online!

As versões do PS3 e X360 ganharam partidas online.

XD Em nenhum momento houve lag.

Concluindo: Eu achei o jogo excelente.

XD

For my first Monkey Ball clone update, here's a screenshot of what's coming up so far. Last week I've tested some textures and using my own state manager display to handle the switching between parts of the game. That would be put aside until much later. And for obvious reasons, I won't actually be using the monkeys in the game.

Right now I have to work on the controls. Using the PSP's single joystick makes sense for tilting the level in this game, and already took care of the "dead zone" in the middle. I'm still not set at the maximum angles in which it should tilt, though. The camera would have to be just far enough so that the floor won't completely obscure the player's view. Using the camera to point where I want it to was easier than I thought.

As a test for the bounce, I have the ball falling from a great height to the floor and having the camera rotate to follow it. That worked pretty well. The actual tilt doesn't move the ball, though. For debugging purposes, the ball is moved with the D-pad around a fixed camera. This creates a movement area where the player can circumnavigate with Left or Right, the preferred control scheme for a fixed camera. In practice, the camera would be following the moving ball as the floor is tilted. But more on how that will work for another day. Next on the list, polygonal collision detection. Hope you like math...
