<title><![CDATA[Funny games]]></title>

Questo, molto sinteticamente ma senza tralasciare nulla, è <em>Funny games</em> di <em>Michael Haneke,</em> con <em>Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Brady Corbet</em> e <em>Michael Pitt</em>, un film che in modo presuntuoso richiama - nella locandina e nel trailer - al lavoro di Stanley Kubrick <em>Arancia meccanica</em> ma che del capolavoro del 1971 non ha nulla. Un film che date questa premessa non riesce a spiegare le sue qualità e lascia nello spettatore quell'orrenda sensazione di aver sprecato sette euro e due ore della propria vita. Chi fosse interessato ad un thriller-splatter lasci perdere, questo film è un qualcosa di più.</p>

<p align="justify">Una tranquilla famiglia vede rovinarsi le vacanze da due ragazzi, apparentemente timidi e cortesi ma nella pratica sanguinolenti seviziatori, che per combattere la noia visitano le case da vacanza di ricche famiglie torturandole per, alla fine, ucciderle.</p>
<p align="justify">Già nei titoli di testa - dove dalla musica lirica si passa improvvisamente al frastuono antimelodico di John Zorn - si intuisce la tensione del contrasto del film. Un film che pretende di essere violento ma non mostra mai la violenza pura dei <em>cattivi</em> sulle loro vittime, preferendo soffermarsi sull'indifferenza dei seviziatori. Ottime le inquadrature scelte, quasi tutte lunghe a camera fissa, che possono appesantire ma rendono particolare la pelliccola. Altra nota di merito è il cast, una splendida Naomi Watts affiancata da Tim Roth e Michael Pitt, che paiono insuperabili. Manca invece la suspance e le due ore del film finiscono per appesantire lo spettatore.</p>
<p align="justify">Purtroppo il trailer italiano aveva paragonato il film ad <em>Arancia meccanica</em> al quale però è molto diverso nei metodi di racconto, nel messaggio e nella storia. <img style="margin:5px 15px 0 0;" height="226" alt="Funny-Games-1483" src="http://markarg.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/funny-games-1483.jpg" width="282" align="left" border="0">In comune hanno solo la noia esistenziale dei giovani protagonisti che li porta a commettere giochi e atti violenti sulle loro vittime innocenti. Il lavoro di Kubrick vuole essere un film realista, spaventare. <em>Funny games</em> oltre a spaventare molto poco - anche se inquieta in diversi punti - ha il chiaro intento di convincere lo spettatore che le differenze tra finzione e realtà sono sottili e per nulla scontate. Più volte nel film il protagonista ammicca alla telecamera e il concetto è ripreso anche in un altro punto</p>

</blockquote>
<p align="justify">E' l'intento del regista, criticare la società della spettacolarizzazione e la disinvolta rappresentazione della violenza sull’essere umano. Questo è l'aspetto più innovativo ed interessante del film.</p>
<p align="justify">Voto <strong>7</strong>, nonostante tutto un film interessante.</p>

Questo perchè quando si gira il remake di un film si parte da due presupposti, il primo è che il prodotto originale sia stato amato dal pubblico (altrimenti non avrebbe senso l'operazione), il secondo è che siano passati moltissimi anni dall'uscita. Per questi stessi motivi però quasi sempre non si ottiene nulla di buono. Qualcosa che è stato molto amato difficilmente può essere sostituito nel cuore della gente, ed il passare degli anni cambia la mentalità del pubblico, le tecniche di regia e di produzione.<br />
'Funny Games' è l'eccezione che conferma la regola. Il regista tedesco Michael Haneke, dopo l'infinita insistenza del produttore Chris Cohen, ha deciso che poteva dare nuovamente vita alla sua opera più conosciuta.<br />
'Funny Games' è un film tedesco del 1997, un piccolo goiello, che per diversi motivi non ebbe il successo che meritava. Innanzi tutto, quello che mancava dieci anni fa era una distribuzione di grande impatto della pellicola. L'idea di produrre il film negli Stati Uniti, con un cast tecnico ed artistico americano, quindi ha convinto Haneke a tentare l'impresa. Il risultato è egregio.<br />
'Funny Games', con degli attori perfettamente calati nelle loro parti, è forse anche meglio dell'originale. Per quanto sia completamente identico nella sceneggiatura, nello script, nella trama, nelle musiche, ha una marcia in più. Forse proprio è proprio bravura degli attori scelti a fare la differenza. Inutile dire qualcosa di un Tim Roth che tutti conosciamo. Ci teniamo a sottolineare invece il bravissimo Michael Pitt, i più giovani, che lo ricordano certamente per il suo ruolo in un'intera stagione della serie tv Dawson's Creek, si troveranno davanti un'attore ormai maturo e artisticamente irriconoscibile, se non per il suo volto sempre più somigliante a Leo Di Caprio.<br />
La storia è semplicissima Ann, George e il piccolo Georgie sono in cammino verso la loro seconda casa, dove passeranno le vacanze estive. I vicini di casa, Fred e Eva, sono già arrivati e si organizzano per vedersi tutti il giorno dopo per una partita di golf. Mentre suo marito e suo figlio sono al lago per sistemare la barca a vela messa recentemente a nuovo, Ann inizia a preparare la cena. All’improvviso si ritrova faccia a faccia con Peter, un ragazzo estremamente gentile, ospite dei vicini di casa, venuto a chiedere delle uova. Ann si appresta a dargli le uova ma, tutto a un tratto, esita: come ha fatto Peter a entrare in casa? Le cose prendono rapidamente una strana piega e si precipitano verso un’inaspettata esplosione di violenza.<br />
'Funny Games' è chiaramente ispirato all'ultraviolenza di 'Arancia Meccanica', ma solo nel contesto generale, nel particolare è un film ispirato, con una fortissima critica a chi descrive il pubblico come vittima passiva di ciò che si vede al cinema. Per Haneke il pubblico è il primo responsabile di ciò che accade sul grande schermo, perchè il cinema ci da quello che noi vogliamo avere. Assolutamente imperdibile uno dei protagonisti quando a più riprese interagisce con il pubblico in sala.<br />
Disturbante ed inquietante (tenetevi pronti alla colonna sonora che dalla musica classica passa ai Bonehead), non un remake ma un clone geneticamente modificato, i cultori del genere non possono perderlo.</p>

<p>Ok, non è proprio così, non ho nessuna scadenza, ma ero abbastanza indeciso su quale film recensire questa settimana, e rischiavo che i giorni passassero senza aver buttato giù neppure qualche riga :) . Alla fine, invece di lanciarmi nel commento del secondo capitolo di <em>HellBoy</em> (che comunque andrò a vedere) in uscita questo mercoledì, ho preferito raccontarvi le mie impressioni su <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808279/" target="_blank">Funny Games</a>, un film che mi aveva incuriosito non poco sin dalla prima visione dei trailer.<!--more--></p>
<p>La pellicola è un remake di un film del 1997 dello stesso regista e autore, Michael Haneke e racconta le violenze subite da una dolce famigliola (interpretata da Tim Roth e Naomi Watts) per mano di una coppia di ragazzi psicopatici. La trama è facilmente riassumibile così, anche per non svelare troppo dello sviluppo della storia e degli stratagemmi adoperati dai due criminali.</p>
<p>Sono stati fatti dei paragoni con <em>Arancia Meccanica</em>, e devo dire che, per quanto il capolavoro di Kubrick partisse dall' "amata ultraviolenza" per affrontare temi più importanti (il libero arbitrio, per esempio), il confronto non è per nulla inopportuno (anche se la scena iniziale ricorda tantissimo quella di <em>Shining</em>). Il film è una doccia fresca in questa calda estate 2008, assolutamente coinvolgente, elettrizzante e, ovviamente, violento. Paurosamente violento. I vestiti e le acconciature da ragazzi per bene, la passione per il golf, l'estrema educazione a tratti irridente nei confronti delle vittime, rimarranno nell'immaginario collettivo così come l'humour e alcune battute del film.</p>
<p>Il cast, composto da pochi attori complessivamente, è di valore e capace di trasmettere tutte le emozioni che i personaggi devono comunicare: ferocia e pazzia i carnefici, disperazione e terrore le vittime. I due ragazzi sono semplicemente perfetti, soprattutto Michael Pitt, davvero inquietante e determinato nel proprio istinto omicida; d'altro canto Naomi Watts e Tim Roth danno vita a un'interpretazione convincente e drammatica (sebbene io parteggiassi ovviamente per i due ragazzi...sono fatto così che ci volete fare :roll ), malgrado la staticità del personaggio di quest'ultimo a causa di una brutta ferita e della sua vigliaccheria.</p>
<p>Il film regala anche qualche trovata particolare, come quella del telecomando, e il fatto che spesso e volentieri il personaggio di Michael Pitt guardi dritto in camera e si rivolga direttamente allo spettatore è a tratti spaventoso ma anche divertente. Un titolo che mi è piaciuto molto, sarà per il genere di film che sta uscendo in questo periodo, buoni prodotti, ma forse un po' piatti, troppo "stagionali". Funny Games invece, malgrado una trama non proprio originalissima, riesce a tirarsi fuori dall'afa di questa estate, proponendo due ore diverse all'insegna delle emozioni forti. A un prezzo ragionevole, credo lo comprerò anche in dvd.</p>

<li>Belli i tempi in cui Tim Roth sanguinava sul retro di una macchina! A giudicare da questo film, tiene le botte ancora abbastanza bene...altro che Abominio :roll ;</li>
<li>Se volete farvi qualche risata senza troppi pensieri (e ammirare la bellezza di Anne Hathaway :roll ) vi consiglio di andare a vedere <em>Agente Smart: Casino Totale</em>; ho preferito non recensirlo, ma mi è piaciuto parecchio per essere un film del genere.</li>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><strong><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">In sala</span></strong><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;"> Agente Smart, furbo e intelligente, è proprio il caso di dirlo. <strong>“Casino totale”</strong> è la trasposizione cinematografica di una fortunata serie degli anni ’60 di Mel Brooks.<!--more-->Dopo un periodo di inattività, Maxwell Smart (Steve Carrell) viene incaricato di fermare un complotto contro la città di Los Angeles e viene affiancato all’agente 99, la bella Anne Hathaway. Max è un tipo sbadato e presto finisce nei guai. Per la regia di Peter Segal, il film piacerà a molti. C’è stato “Casino Royale” che ha appassionato ancora una volta gli amanti del genere e adesso “Casino Totale”: l’agente 86, ha perso qualche chilo e ha guadagnato la licenza di uccidere al fianco di una Bond-girls che sopravviverà alla fine del film. A differenza del suo rivale nel genere, non è misogino, indossa un abito elegante ma è un affascinante disadattato.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><strong><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">In uscita </span></strong><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">“Nel 1971 Arancia Meccanica vi sconvolse”, così recita la voce che racconta il film <strong>“Funny Games”</strong>. Jim Roth, Naomi Watts e Michael Pitt, gli attori principali del film, remake del suo omonimo del 1997 diretto dallo stesso regista, Michael Haneke. Ann, George e il figlioletto sono in cammino verso la casa dove trascorreranno l’estate, i loro vicini di casa ospitano Peter con cui Ann si trova improvvisamente faccia a faccia. Lui le chiede delle uova, ma mentre è intenta a cercarle, Ann indugia: come è entrato in casa quel ragazzo? "Cerco di mostrare la violenza per come essa è davvero: una cosa difficile da mandar giù. Voglio mostrare la realtà della violenza, il dolore, le ferite inflitte da un essere umano a un altro”, ha dichiarato il regista. Questo film vi terrorizzerà perché non ci metterà molto ad entrare nei meandri più profondi della vostra psiche.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">A casa Cain è nata da poco la piccola Lily e fin da subito in <strong>“Joshua”</strong> inizia a manifestarsi qualcosa di strano: il bambino sembra educato, ma si sa, l’apparenza inganna. Il film di George Ratliff ci propone una storia angosciosa, una di quelle che con magistrale tecnica ci riporta al filone del classico thriller psicologico. Joshua è il male incarnato nel corpo di un bambino, qualcosa di cui dubitare, qualcosa che si vorrebbe controllare ma che cova in sé inevitabilmente il suo essere diabolico.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">In un paese del Canada la Depressione ha causato penuria di ricchezze, tanto che la proprietaria di una birreria decide di indire un concorso: chi eseguirà <strong>“La canzone più triste del mondo”</strong> riceverà un premio di 25mila dollari. Per la regia di Guy Maddin, il film ci propone una storia surreale dove si mescolano sogno e realtà e dove le immagini in bianco e nero e le “vecchie” voci sembrano riportarci al cinema sonoro delle origini.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><strong><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">Déjà vu </span></strong><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">Film del 1993 di Jonathan Demme, “Philadelphia” racconta la storia di Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks), un brillante avvocato gay. Un giorno, di punto in bianco, Andrew viene licenziato perché, dicono, “inefficiente sul posto di lavoro”. Il motivo ufficioso Andrew lo comprende subito: è stato licenziato perché affetto da AIDS. Così, senza perdersi d’animo, ingaggia un altro avvocato interpretato da Denzel Washington e porta avanti una causa contro lo studio legale per cui lavorava. Quando il film uscì nelle sale, l’AIDS dilagava e non tutti conoscevano la malattia. Significativa in questo senso è la scena in cui l’avvocato Joe Miller stringe la mano ad Andrew e inizia a temere di aver contratto la malattia. Tom Hanks vinse il premio Oscar come migliore attore protagonista. Il film si pone come denuncia verso ogni tipo di intolleranza.</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;">Once años después de que <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Haneke" target="_blank"><strong>Michael Haneke</strong></a> rodase "<a href="http://www.filmaffinity.com/es/film315125.html" target="_blank"><strong>Funny Games</strong></a>" (1997), el director austriaco revisita su <img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1688" src="http://sinfuturoysinunduro.wordpress.com/files/2008/07/funny_games.jpg" alt="" width="295" height="443" />propia película en un <a href="http://wwws.warnerbros.es/funnygames/" target="_blank"><strong>remake</strong></a> que copia en su totalidad la cinta original.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">La intención de Haneke al hacer una copia 100% idéntica de "Funny Games" pero en inglés y con actores anglosajones es darle una difusión a la historia que no tuvo la primera película, rodada en Austria y en alemán, lo que hizo que se convirtiese en una cinta de culto muy poco conocida para el gran público, sobre todo estadounidense.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Para este remake Haneke cuenta con <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naomi_Watts" target="_blank"><strong>Naomi Watts</strong></a>, <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Roth" target="_blank"><strong>Tim Roth</strong></a> y <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Pitt" target="_blank"><strong>Michael Pitt</strong></a> para contar la misma historia:  una típica familia feliz de vacaciones recibe la visita inesperada de dos jóvenes que convierten su idilio en un terrorífico y brutal juego por la supervivencia.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Al igual que en la original, con esta película Michale Haneke quiere denunciar la violencia consumista de ciertos tipos de películas y cómo ésta es aceptada acríticamente por el espectador que se convierte, así, en cómplice de lo que está sucediendo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Frente a ese tipo de violencia, Haneke contrapone otra igualmente brutal pero mucho más realista; y al realizarla en EE.UU. y con actores anglosajones, pretende hacerl reflexionar a los espectadores estadounidenses sobre su papel en otro tipo de películas donde la violencia es totalmente aceptada.</p>

Apesar de estar longe da genialidade da Pixar, o estúdio não desiste da animação.</p>
<p align="justify">E se quanto à qualidade do novo filme ainda é cedo para tirar conclusões, já o elenco vocal, esse podemos afirmar que é de luxo. Senão vejamos…</p>

Com poderosos inimigos às portas do Vale, todas as esperanças recaem numa antiga profecia que vaticina o aparecimento de um herói que irá “salvar o dia” e o Vale. Mas, entre todos os peritos em artes marciais que entretanto vão aparecendo e reclamam tal título, nenhum parece possuir a marca d’ <em>O Escolhido</em>… até agora! Quando o preguiçoso Po aparece no meio da competição, os <em>masters</em> do Kung Fu ficam em choque ao descobrir que o (nada motivado) Panda é o portador da marca… torna-se então necessário transformar o animal num verdadeiro <em>Kung fu Fighter</em> antes que seja tarde demais. Um grupo de 5<em> masters</em> em artes marciais, desde sempre ídolos de Po, irão ajudá-lo.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">A violência sempre foi um cunho da presença humana, realizando-se nas suas mais diversas facetas de interacção. Algo que se tenta eliminar, mas que invariavelmente reside sempre no nosso mais recôndito íntimo. Não choca por isso reconhecer a sua importância na evolução do Homem, quer enquanto indivíduo, quer enquanto animal social, apesar de chocar muito boa gente a relativa insensibilidade com que, de certa forma, se banaliza a violência nos dias que correm. O constante bombardeamento da desgraça pela retina acaba por criar anticorpos e nesse passo, acabamos por perder um pouco de nós. O fruto desta traição reside na tecnologia, assim como para outras eras, outros instrumentos, outros recreios. Não, a tecnologia não é a doença. Apenas é. É parte fundamental de nós e sempre o foi e não somos nada sem ela. Mas o que somos é um conceito completamente lixado.</p>

Tudo gira em torno de um casal (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0915208/" target="_blank">Naomi Watts</a> e <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000619/" target="_blank">Tim Roth</a>) que é feito refém na casa onde passava férias por dois jovens (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0685856/" target="_blank">Michael Pitt</a> e  <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1227232/" target="_blank">Brady Corbet</a>) que os torturam sem razão aparente a não ser pelo puro prazer do sofrimento. Não será a primeira vez que Haneke contará esta história, já que a mesma é baseada (consta que é uma reposição literal) num <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119167/" target="_blank">filme seu de 1997</a>, com o mesmo nome.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Tudo estaria a postos para a elaboração de um convencional thriller, ainda por mais quando, ironicamente, o próprio cinema ajuda a banalizar o conceito de violência nas suas mais diversas formas, seja pelo voyeurismo sádico de “<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450278/" target="_blank">Hostel</a>” ou a moralidade distorcida da saga “<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387564/" target="_blank">Saw</a>“. Mas “Funny Games” subverte a tendência, relegando os choques explícitos para a imaginação do espectador, criando um clima de verdadeira tensão psicológica num espaço de interacção reduzido, e por isso, mais intimista.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Mas afinal, o que leva um realizador como Michael Haneke a, aparentemente, se deixar levar na onda de remakes de obras estrangeiras para o mercado americano ? Segundo o próprio, e com certa lógica bem doseada pela confrangedora realidade (mas não exclusiva), a história sempre foi pensada como sendo uma história americana, precisamente pelo peso que a violência tem, anormalmente, na sociedade dos E.U.A.. E por aqui se percebe onde é que este estudo intimista de um acto hediondo se torna mais incisivo: numa sociedade que abraça de tal forma a violência, a morte deixa de fazer sentido, passando a ser apenas mais uma distracção. Resta saber é se a inversão de valores chegará a um ponto tal em que questionaremos quem são os párias: aqueles que matam ou aqueles que os condenam ?</p>

<title><![CDATA[Trailer Awards: Favorite Trailer Starring Psychotic Young Men]]></title>

<p style="text-align:left;">If our current cinema is an indication of anything, it's that we really like movies about sadistic bastards. We're experiencing the season of the Killers Without Motives. And my, how stylish they are. From Anton Chigurh's Dorothy Hamill bob in <em>No Country for Old Men</em> to the blank-eyed masks worn by the soulless trio in <em>The Strangers</em>, these murderers know how to make a sartorial impression. Really, however, no villains have been as well-dressed, or left me as unsettled, as Peter and Paul, the rag-tag duo in Michael Haneke's <em>Funny Games</em>. Sporting their finest tennis whites, these boys are courteous and unfailingly polite, the perfect products of a very expensive finishing school. Everything is "please" and "thank you," "miss" and "sir."  It's only what they ask of their captives, not how they ask it, that's a tad on the rude side.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">The trailer for this movie is brilliant. In fact, if Haneke would've just released this instead of the full-length film, I'm sure the reviews would've been more favorable. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the movie -- it still had me thinking five days after I saw it -- but after seeing the original, which starred German actors, was also helmed by Haneke and released internationally in 1998, I just thought it could've been better. The whole thing was a commentary on how movie audiences, particularly American audiences, are complicit in the heinous crimes unfolding onscreen. There are many instances where the killers, especially Paul (Michael Pitt), break the fourth wall and comment on what's going on: "What should happen next? Should they live or should they die?" It's a great idea, but perhaps executed more effectively in <em>A Clockwork Orange</em>. The trailer alludes to these experimental touches, but still advertises the movie as your typical slasher flick. It was all a ruse to get mainstream audiences excited about this weird movie, but ultimately one that couldn't work. You see, Haneke is an esteemed director, and extremely European. Would Joe, the 18-year-old kid who works at the local Shell gas station, go into this thinking it was another <em>Hostel </em>and leave miraculously enlightened about violence in the media and viewer dynamics? No. He'd just be like, "Needs more guts."</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Still, there's something about <em>Funny Games </em>that I really liked, something I can't quite put my finger on. For starters, if nothing else, it was extremely entertaining. It was fun to see these kids enter a home and become progressively creepier. It was fun to see Haneke breaking some horror-movie commandments, like Thou Shalt Not Kill Children. It was fun to see Tim Roth, who usually plays the hard-ass, be reduced to broken legs and bitter tears. And it was super fun to see Michael Pitt, an actor I lovingly refer to as The Crotch as a guestimation of what he smells like, play this extremely clean, extremely evil guy. It was all very <em>Bad Seed</em>, and I loved it. In fact, in about half an hour, I'm heading to Blockbuster to go buy it on DVD.</p>

<p>I was so totally into you last night.  You had me right from the get.  At one point I even told The Wife, "<em>This is the best horror movie I've seen in years.</em>"  Then <em><strong>it</strong></em> happened.  Don't act all coy...you know <em>exactly</em> what part I'm talking about.  What a way to ruin a whole movie....No, no, don't bother trying to explain...I'm familiar with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metafiction">Metafiction</a>...<em>and</em> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metafilm">Metafilm</a>.  I get it, really.  But you totally cheated by trying to get across some kind of message.</p>
<p>As Bill Duke would say, "<em>You know you done fucked up, don't you? You know it, don't you? You know you done fucked up.</em>"</p>
<p>But you don't.  You think you're sooooo clever and smart.</p>
<p>I hate you, <strong>FUNNY GAMES</strong>.</p>

<p><em>Note:</em> Funny Games <em>never came to Flagstaff's movie theater, thus I didn't get to review the film upon the initial release. So now that its on DVD, I have rented it in order to review it. Enjoy.</em></p>
<p>When I saw the trailer for <em>Funny Games</em>, I was intrigued beyond the basis of me being a horror movie fan. This film is written and directed by Michael Haneke, and it is a shot-for-shot remake of his German language film of the same name made slightly more than a decade ago. The original film was designed to be a comment on media violence, and so is the remake. But this remake wants to punish Americans specifically, for it is we more than any other culture that craves blood when we go to the movies.</p>
<p>The flick is about a family who is terrorized by two strangers clad in clean, white golf outfits. The family is Anna (Naomi Watts), George (Tim Roth) and their son Georgie (Devon Gearhart), and their terrorizers are Peter/Jerry/Butthead (Brady Corbet) and Paul/Tom/Beavis (Michael Pitt). That's the whole story, and we watch how things get grim, grimmer, grimmest and finally grave. The film has no plot to speak of, a point made when Paul, in one of a few candid inquiries with the audience, asks us if we desire plot development. We do, but <em>Funny Games</em> is a film that revels in not giving us what we want.</p>
<p>What was good? The performances are top notch across the board, and the cinematography by Darius Khondji (the same guy who shot David Fincher's <em>Se7en</em>) is effective in creating a chilling atmosphere. The bad? The overwhelming lack of purpose that is felt throughout the entire running time.</p>
<p><em>Funny Games</em> could be seen as an interesting experiment: a filmmaker remaking his film shot-for-shot to see if lightning in a bottle can be caught twice. But to what end? The movie has already been made (and not all that long ago), the point has already been made, so why make it again? What more does Haneke have to say? Nothing, so the remake is just pointless.</p>
<p>It is this pointlessness of <em>Funny Games</em> that overwhelms any admirable aspects the film has. There is a moment where the film literally rewinds itself in order to change the past in the villains' favor. So, if the past can just be changed at random, what's the point of watching the movie? We know right from the beginning how this will play out, so why do we care?</p>
<p>Lots of questions, none of which have answers. Unfortunately, I cannot rewind real life, in which I would change history and rent a different movie.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Groupes mythiques de la scène rock, Joy Division et Nirvana ont conclu leur existence éphémère par le suicide de leur leader. <em>Control</em>, biographie filmée d'Ian Curtis, rappelle inévitablement un film antérieur, <em>Last Days</em>. Et même si, d'évidence, les deux films ne se correspondent pas, ils entrent en résonance, partagent un même point de fuite, qu'ils canalisent et exsudent tout du long : la mort.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">On peut commencer par énumérer les écueils évités. Le spectaculaire, l'exhaustivité, la psychologie. Ian Curtis  s'incarne dans un Sam Riley presque mimétique, dont la ressemblance est aussitôt annulée  par un découpage saccadé, collection d'instantanés, qui perturbe  la continuité du récit et noie les contours du chanteur  dans des fondus  de noir. Dans <em>Last Days</em>, Blake figure l'absence de nom. Il ne dit pas Kurt Cobain, mort à 27 ans (Ian Curtis avait 23 ans lorsqu'il s'est suicidé) même si tout le désigne. <em>Blake</em>, c'est une ascendance de poète (<a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Blake">William Blake</a>), et <a href="http://www.lamediatheque.be/med/rech_n.php?ser=&#38;intervenant=jarmusch&#38;titre=Dead+man&#38;morceau=&#38;descripteur=&#38;label=&#38;ref=VD1038&#38;supa%5B7%5D=1"><em>Dead Man</em></a> chez Jarmusch - presque <em>blank</em>, le vide. Très peu de paroles, des borborygmes, des silences. Les deux chanteurs n'ont guère que la transe scénique pour exprimer l'angoisse qui les dévore, mais cela passe moins par des mots que par une agitation du corps tout entier, spasmes désespérés, ridicules.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Divergences : Corbijn construit son film, respectueux de la chronologie, tente vaguement la relecture littérale d'une vie, la dissolution d'un être. Gus Van Sant fige son personnage dans la molle éternité qui précède la mort. Ni début ni fin, une boucle de lenteur et d'inanité, filmée à distance, comme pour marquer l'impossibilité de comprendre, récuser toute identification. Icône romantique rêvée, Ian demeure tout aussi inaccessible, longue silhouette isolée, ombre fondue dans le noir et blanc de l'image, qui contraste par son élégance avec la déchéance physique de Blake.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Le choix de ces deux icônes n'est pas fortuit. Evoquer le suicide par le biais d'une figure populaire (même procédé dans <a href="http://krotchka.wordpress.com/2008/05/18/chronique-dune-mort-annoncee/">Jesse James</a>) permet une économie scénaristique. Visages imprimés dans l'inconscient collectif, le film se dispense de les caractériser, pour accéder directement à l'essentiel. Du symbole à l'individu, c'est un travail de décomposition, qui, dans sa morbide conclusion, rappelle le qualificatif désespéré d'Antonin Artaud désignant Van Gogh, mais surtout lui-même - suicidé de la société.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A remake of the 1997 Austrian <em>Funny Games</em> (which I personally haven't seen but have been told is pretty much exactly the same thing, just in German).</p>
<p>The story didn't shock me as much as I expected it to. Two bored young men slaughter happy families for fun at their weekend cabins. Oh well...</p>
<p>What made me really uncomfortable were the shots the director Michael Haneke used. Somehow he never shows the things the audience would expect to see. And then in other scenes he just keeps the camera on the actors way longer then what should be. This leads to a strange mixture of the characters' struggle in the film and the actors' struggle to keep going. There is one scene in which Naomi Watts is desperately trying to get to her feet even though her legs are tied together. There are no cuts or camera tricks, therefore the actress is actually in the same helpless situation as her film character. Very creepy. But well done.</p>

Its an intensely physical process. Then, when you stop at the right time, you get a great piece of art. The paintings reflect my experience and fascination with the ocean.</p>
<p>The Journey. A career in surfboards led to a search for waves, women and wine, culminating in a long sojourn in Tahiti. It was here that demand flourished - the Tahitians identifying with a bold use of colour, texture &#38; concepts. I am now living on the South Coast of NSW, in a beautiful, wild place - a powerful inspiration for art.</p>
<p>The Influences.     A small child enraptured by Van Gogh’s big flowers and crazy nights grew into an adult enamoured of artists who create with passion. You can see it in work by Whitely, Pollock, and Turner. I am influenced by dreams, howling southerly storms (as I write), westerlies slamming the ocean flat on a screaming blue day, big grey waves dredging on shallow slabs of reef, tropical coral islands, the heat of the sun, tracks of the moon on water, dolphins and sharks, turtles and sea eagles, the laughter of children, and the look of love.</p></div>

<p>Esse é um filme muito, mais muito estranho. É um remake do filme de mesmo nome de 1997 e ambos fora escritos e dirigidos pelo alemão Michael Haneke. Em suas quase duas horas, <em>"Funny Games"</em> alterna momentos de pura tensão e violência com momentos da mais chata monotonia e desperdício de fita.</p>
<p>A idéia do autor é mostrar a banalização da violência e como o tele espectador tem grande participação no que é transmitido hoje em dia. Focando nisso, o filme é muito bem sucedido, mas a insistência em cenas longamente dramáticas, com uns 5 minutos de plano seqüência que filmam o nada, o deixam monótono e irritante. É ai a estranheza do filme, misturar o profundo tédio com a angustia e nervosismo. Algumas cenas demoram demais e nada acontece, mostrando os personagens chorando ou sem fazer nada de importante.</p>
<p>A trama conta a história de um casal, Ann (Naomi Watts) e George (Tim Roth) e seu filho Georgie (Devon Gearhart), que durante umas curtas férias na sua casa no lago são surpreendidos por dois jovens, Paul (Michael Pitt) e Peter (Brady Corbet), que através de brincadeiras violentas vão torturar a família. A idéia de Paul e Peter é apenas se divertir com a família, humilhando-os e fazendo com que entrem em pânico. Para desespero da família, seus sequestradores proporam uma aposta: até as 9:00 da manhã eles serão mortos. Por umas três vezes Paul se dirige a câmera perguntando a opinião do espectador, mostrando claramente a intenção do diretor de provar a participação de quem assiste no que é transmitido.</p>
<p><em>"Funny Games"</em> é um filme interessante, mas as longas cenas de nada enchem o saco, se você conseguir tolerar isso vai adorá-lo.</p>

<p>Zunächst einmal <em>wieder</em> das leidige Diskussionsthema über Gewalt, Grausamkeiten und Greultaten in Filmen. Natürlich wird das zwangsläufig in diesen Film wieder hochgekocht und natürlich werden wir wieder einmal in Diskussionsnot kommen. Aber zunächst zum Inhaltlichen...</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Eine Musterfamilie (Vater, Mutter und 10jähriger Sohn) fahren in ihr Ferienhaus. Alles schien beschaulich zu sein, bis zwei fremde junge Männer vor der Türe stehen und sie um 4 Eier bitten. Das Drama nimmt seinen Lauf. Was anfänglich ein harmloser Disput war, wird zum Psychospiel. Zunächst wird den Vater das Bein gebrochen, dann Mutter und Sohn ebenfalls als Geiseln genommen. Die perfide Wette "In 12 Stunden seid ihr tot". Zwar gelingt zwischenzeitlich den Jungen die Flucht (nachdem er mit einen Sofakissen über den Kopf gequält wurde), doch endet auch diese Flucht im Nichts, da die möglichen Hilfen im Form der Nachbarn leider schon tot waren. Also beginnt das Spiel vom Neuen. Als erstes stirbt der kleine 10jährige Junge durch einen Kopfschuss mit der Schrotflinte. Anschließend stirbt der Vater ebenfalls durch diese und die Mutter wird gefesselt ins Wasser gestoßen. Danach gehen die beiden Männer seelenruhig zu den nächsten Leuten um das Spiel vom Neuen zu beginnen.</p>
<p><span style="color:#000080;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> KRITIK:</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Wie schon 1997 sorgt Regisseur Michael Haneke erneut für einen Fingerzeig und reichlich Gesprächsstoff. Schon damals wurde sein Film unter anderen als "Akt sinnloser Gewalt", "Gewaltverherrlichung" und "perverses Spiel auf Menschenkosten" bezeichnet. Genau DAS war sein Ziel. Er wollte die Gesellschaft aufrütteln und aufzeigen, wo wir mittlerweile gelandet sind und zu was Menschen fähig geworden sind durch diverse Spiele, Filme und sonstige Dinge.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">In der Neuverfilmung arbeitet Haneke zwar mit einen absoluten 1-1 Abgleich, doch nutzt er dieses Remake auch zugleich, um vergangene Fehler wettzumachen und um einige Feinheiten mit einzubringen. Das gelingt ihm sehr gut, wenn nicht perfekt. Die Kameraeinstellungen sind erneut ideal getroffen, die Musik (absolut GLEICH zu 1997) ist erneut passend, schockierend und aufwühlend. Der Kinobesucher wird wieder durch ein Wechselbad der Gefühle geschickt.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Schauspielerisch legt Funny Games U.S. noch einmal eine große Schippe drauf. Da er in den USA gedreht wurde, haben wir es durchweg mit amerikanischen Schauspielern zu tun. Mit Naomi Watts und Tim Roth konnte man zwei sehr bekannte Schauspieler gewinnen, die den Film den nötigen "Star" Rummel geben. Sie spielen die Rollen der Mutter und des Vaters überzeugend. Vor allem nach dem Tod ihres Sohnes zeigen sie mit sehr viel Gefühl, wie sich Eltern in so einer grausamen Situation fühlen müssen. Brady Corbett und Michael Pitt überzeugen ebenfalls absolut als psychische Serienkiller. Sie führen das Publikum auf einen schmalen Grad zwischen Wahnsinn und vollkommener Unzurechnungsfähigkeit. Vor allem Corbett mit seinen großen Augen und Pitt mit seinen eiskalten Gesichtszügen machen von Anfang an klar, wer Gut und wer Böse in dem Film ist.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Devon Gearhart spielt die Rolle des 10jährigen Jungen. Der am 05. Mail 1995 in Atlanta/Georgia geborene Amerikaner spielt seine Rolle fabelhaft. Er ist ein ganz wunderbarer Schauspieler und bekommt in diesen Film den Spagat zwischen Kind sein und unter Todesangst zu leiden perfekt hin. Er ist vielleicht die Entdeckung und die Idealbesetzung des Filmes. Er zeigt vor allem in seiner großen Szene viel Übersicht. Die Panik, als er sich die Schuhe, Socken und Hose auszieht, um Wasserspuren auf den Boden zu vermeiden, oder seine Augen, als er mit der Schrotflinte auf die Peiniger zielt. Leider gibt der Film für ihn keine größere und vor allem glücklichere Rolle her, aber ich denke wir werden ihn wieder sehen und das schon bald. So ein Talent MUSS man wieder sehen !</p>
<p><span style="color:#000080;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong> FAZIT:</strong></span></span></p>
<p>Michael Haneke hat sich wieder selbst übertroffen. Seine Neuverfilmung steht dem Original in Nichts nach ! Im Gegenteil sogar. Die Schauspieler (ohne an den großen Ullrich Mühe zu zweifeln !) sind zum riesengroßen Teil eine Idealbesetzung. Allen voran mit Devon Gearhart hat er den ultimativen Glücksgriff gelandet, wofür er sicherlich von Kollegen beneidet wird. Der schwierige Stoff wird sehr gut und vor allem glaubhaft übermittelt. Ich nehme jeden seine Rolle ab und habe auch nie daran gezweifelt, dass sie diese nicht perfekt herüberbringen können. Einzig inhaltlich gebe ich Abzüge, da die Handlungsstränge zu einfach gehalten sind, Szenen zum Teil vorhersehbar sind und man vielleicht trotz des 1-1 Remakes ein paar neuartige Sachen hätte einfügen können.</p>
<p>WERTUNG: Ich gebe 8,5 von 10 Punkten.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Sprachbarrieren.</strong></p>
<p>Über Michael Hanekes medienkritische Gewaltstudie ist in den mittlerweile über zehn Jahren seit jener denkwürdigen Uraufführung in Cannes, bei der Wim Wenders und eine ganze Reihe anderer Zuschauer demonstrativ den Saal verlassen hatten, so ziemlich alles bereits gesagt worden – und das meiste davon merklich zu oft. Was sich da anderorts vielfach nachlesen lässt, trifft in mehr oder weniger gleichem Maß auch auf das fast identisch auftretende US-Remake zu, und selbst Vergleiche zwischen beiden Fassungen liefern kaum Bemerkenswertes. Die Geschichte der intakten Bürgerfamilie, die in ihrem Wochenendhaus von zwei Männern ohne offensichtliches Motiv einer brutalen psychischen Folter unterzogen wird, sieht in der Neufassung nahezu Bild für Bild genauso aus wie im Original - und das ist auch Sinn und Zweck der ganzen Angelegenheit. Haneke, so wird er nicht müde zu betonen, habe schon die Urfassung eigentlich für ein amerikanisches Publikum entworfen, dieses jedoch aufgrund der problematischen Sprachbarriere nie wirklich erreicht. Strategie und Intention seien jedoch weiterhin dieselben, wozu also Dinge verändern? Unabhängig davon, dass es aus dieser Perspektive sinnvoll gewesen wäre, schon im ersten Anlauf auf Englisch zu drehen, kann man im Grunde froh sein, dass der Film immer noch (fast) derselbe ist. Auf diese Weise jedenfalls bleibt das Original glücklicherweise unberührt, und diejenigen, die mit der deutschsprachigen Version bereits vertraut sind, gehören ohnehin nicht zum anvisierten Publikum.</p>

<p>Würde man beide Fassungen, etwa im Rahmen einer Videoinstallation, parallel zueinander laufen lassen, sähe man vor allem doppelt. Hier und da fallen Nuancen von Variationen auf, im Wesentlichen aber hat sich nicht viel verändert. Einzig die Figur des Paul (einer der beiden Eindringlinge) als eigentlichem Motor der Geschichte ist offensichtlich stärker auf amerikanische Sehgewohnheiten eingeschworen. Wo Arno Frisch seine Rolle blutleer und stilisiert anlegt, da verleiht Michael Pitt ihr eine lebendigere und identifikationsfreundlichere Note. Umso eher geht der Zuschauer ein Bündnis mit ihr ein und akzeptiert sie als heimliche Hauptfigur. Dafür tritt Peter, der Schweigsamere der beiden, in seiner Verkörperung durch den etwas farblosen (aber deshalb nicht auch bereits langweiligen) Brady Corbett um einiges hinter Frank Gierings beunruhigender Darstellung aus dem Original zurück. Aber das ist beides fraglos gewollt. Überhaupt führt es nicht sonderlich weit, derartige Feinjustierungen genauer zu analysieren, denn vom Prinzip her ist „Funny Games“ auch in der US-Version immer noch der gleiche Film, der auf unbedarfte Zuschauer vermutlich weitestgehend dieselbe schockierende und verstörende Faszination ausüben kann wie das Original - oder eben Verärgerung, Abscheu und tödliche Langeweile. Einer dieser Seiten wird man zugehören, und so oder ähnlich ist es bei Haneke ja meistens.</p>
<p>Nun kann man lange darüber debattieren, ob diese neue Fassung überflüssig ist oder nicht, eine Anpassung an veränderte Verhältnisse nötig gewesen wäre, oder ob Hanekes Strategie im Grundsatz überhaupt aufgehen kann, entscheidend ist, weit und breit findet sich kein Beleg, dass sich jemand ernsthaft die Mühe gemacht hat, den Film einmal dort anzusehen, wo er auf sein eigentlich anvisiertes Publikum trifft. Schon 1997 war die Motivation des Filmemachers, nicht nur einem (im Zuge echter Tarantinoisierung des Kinos) allgemein spielerischer gewordenen Umgang mit medialer Gewaltdarstellung den Spiegel vorzuhalten, sondern auch ganz konkret dem betreffenden Publikum genügend Verstörungspotential zuzumuten, um es ins Grübeln geraten zu lassen. Dass das im Programmkino nur äußerst eingeschränkt funktionieren kann, liegt auf der Hand. Doch genau dort war Hanekes Film natürlicher Weise gelandet. Eine starbesetzte US-Fassung sollte deshalb (vermutlich) der Versuch sein, die zentralen Rezeptionsprobleme des Originals auszuhebeln – von den 15 Millionen Dollar, die einfach mal so zum Verschleudern bereit standen, selbstredend zusätzlich motiviert.</p>
<p>Um aber eine Idee davon zu bekommen, wie derjenige Zuschauertypus nun tatsächlich reagiert, dessen spaßgeleiteten Gewaltfilmkonsum Haneke infrage stellen will, muss man schon in die Vorhölle des Arthouse-Films hinabsteigen – in ein Multiplex-Kino also – und dort inmitten von Halbliterbechern, Dauerquatschern und blinkenden Handys zwei Stunden ausharren, bis sich die feste Überzeugung einstellt, dass man gerade mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit ziemlich repräsentatives Datenmaterial gesammelt hat. Und das beruht vor allem auf der Tatsache, dass die Mehrheit des Publikums ausschließlich aufgrund falscher Voraussetzungen im Kino sitzt (jedenfalls kaum wegen der verlässlich guten Naomi Watts) – und da liegt auch schon ein ganz entscheidendes Problem. Alle Werbemaßnahmen versprechen nämlich in echter Unmissverständlichkeit einen blutigen Psychothriller mit einiges an Gewalt und hohem Tempo. Nichts davon trifft natürlich zu. Weder gibt es etwa den irre von unten in die Kamera starrenden Kubrick-Killer des Filmplakats zu sehen noch die blutigen Handschuhe (und noch nicht einmal die vermeintlich langen weißen Hosen, denn die sind tatsächlich immer noch kurz). Völlig konträr zum Film tritt aber vor allem der effektreiche Trailer auf. Passend montiert zu Griegs bekanntem (und bis zum Erbrechen penetrierten) Peinigungsthema aus den Hallen des Bergkönigs, legt er ein ungeheures Tempo vor, das nichts, aber auch rein gar nichts mit Hanekes an die Grenzen des Erträglichen gehenden Zeitzerdehnungen zu tun hat, die im Film dominieren.</p>
<p>Im Normalfall würde man da einfach von Etikettenschwindel sprechen, hier aber könnte auch eine strategische Transferleistung des Films selber mit im Spiel sein (vom ökonomisch relevant erweiterten Kundenkreis natürlich ganz abgesehen). Denn dieser kleidet sich ja bekanntermaßen gerade in den Konventionsmustern des Psychothrillers – wenn auch ausschließlich, um selbige dann nach allen Regeln der Kunst hintergehen zu können. Nichts anderes also bietet auch die zugehörige Kampagne. Dass dieser Schuss allerdings merklich nach hinten losgeht, daran lässt das Multiplex-Publikum keinen Zweifel, wenn nach der ersten, quälend langen Viertelstunde erst vermehrt die Handydisplays leuchten, dann der Geräuschpegel anzieht und schließlich laute Unmutsbekundungen um sich greifen. Das bleibt so, bis endlich der erste Gewaltakt Besserung verspricht, hält aber nicht lange vor. Für einen Großteil scheint der Film endgültig erledigt, als Paul zum ersten Mal das Publikum direkt anspricht. Das ist zuviel des Guten. Von hier an funktioniert der Film offensichtlich vor allem als Komödie, und speziell die Dialoge verursachen ausgelassene Heiterkeit - bis die Langeweile wieder Überhand nimmt. Die längste Einzelsequenz ohne Schnitt, eigentlich die gnadenlosesten, schockierendsten und schmerzhaftesten Minuten des ganzen Films, ziehen in erster Linie erhebliche Ungeduld und lautstarken Spott über die Charaktere nach sich. Erst als sich die Gewalt kurzfristig gegen die Peiniger wendet, ist das Publikum auf der Seite der Opfer, johlt und klatscht Beifall, jedoch nur um im Anschluss umso verärgerter zu reagieren, als sich das Blatt durch den berüchtigten Rewind-Trick erneut dreht. Danach ist zum Glück bald Schluss, und die Meute verlässt kopfschüttelnd und genervt angesichts verschwendeter Zeit und Euros den Saal. Verdenken kann ihr das niemand.</p>
<p>Die Schuld liegt jedoch nicht wirklich beim Film selber – sie liegt aber viel weniger noch beim Publikum. Die Krux ist die irrige Herangehensweise, zwei Systeme aufeinander zu hetzten, die einfach nicht miteinander können. Sie unter Vorspiegelung falscher Tatsachen zusammenzuführen, macht die Lage nur noch fataler und wiederholt im Fall von „Funny Games“ einen zentralen Fehler des Originals: die Unterschätzung von Sprachbarrieren. Derjenige Zuschauertypus, den Haneke im Kopf hat, wäre vielleicht mit anderen Mitteln aufs Glatteis zu führen, so allerdings kaum. Vermutlich ist der Verdacht nicht ganz unberechtigt, dass der Filmemacher bestenfalls eine (imaginierte) Vorstellung, jedoch keine fundierte Kenntnis von seinem Zielpublikum hat. Vor allem am fehlenden Entgegenkommen scheitert das ganze Unterfangen erheblich. Dabei geht es jedoch weniger darum, den Sehgewohnheiten von „Hostel 2“ und anderem Material aus dem Kategoriensumpf des Torture Porn oder von Schlitzernonsens wie „Prom Night“ nachzueifern (bezeichnenderweise einer der Filme des thriller- und horrorlastigen Trailer-Paketes), als vielmehr den Akzeptanzrahmen nicht über Gebühr auszureizen. Das große Problem ist hier vor allem das fehlende Tempo und ein schier endloses, vermeintlich ereignisloses Warten, mit dem die herbeigelockten Zuschauer nicht klarkommen. Die Konzentrationsschwelle des Multiplex-Publikums erweist sich dabei schon per se als ausgesprochen gering, doch wenn man ihm vorab dann auch noch gänzlich Irreführendes vorgaukelt, erübrigt sich seine Bereitschaft zur Geduld gänzlich. Dies zu ignorieren, muss zwangsläufig alle guten Absichten zugrunde richten.</p>
<p>Ein Jahr nach dem Original übrigens drehte der bis heute völlig unbekannte und auf Video-Premieren festgelegte Brian Katkin mit „If I die before I wake“ (in Deutschland bekannt unter dem Titel „Panic House“) eine durchweg bemerkenswerte Variante des Sujets, die beweist, dass sich selbst im eingeschränkten Rahmen eine beklemmende Leidensgeschichte aus Sicht der Opfer erzählen lässt, die ganz ohne comichafte Gewalt funktioniert, jegliche Komplizenschaft zwischen Täter und Zuschauer ausschließt und trotzdem in der Lage ist, ein breites Publikum gnadenlos spannend zu unterhalten.</p>

El debut del joven director canadiense <strong>Aaron Woodley</strong> (hijo de Denise Cronenberg y sobrino del gran David) es uno de esos títulos extraños y difíciles de ubicar, que nace con la impronta de film de culto. El poder de fascinación de sus imágenes, la acertada y original caracterización de sus personajes y su intenso guión, hacen de esta película un verdadero tesoro a descubrir para los amantes de las atmósferas oníricas del cine de David Lynch y los Hermanos Quay. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;">Poseedora de un imaginario propio, un visionario sentido visual y un talento natural para el melodrama romántico y surrealista, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8iuCJl4yAY" target="_blank"><strong>"Rhinoceros Eyes"</strong></a> es un modesto y sentido canto de amor al cine, desbordante de imaginación. Rodado con igual esmero artesanal que talante experimental, supuso una de las sorpresas más agradables de las que nos deparó aquella lejana edición del Festival Internacional de Sitges de 2004.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;">Resulta exasperante constatar como un film tan interesante y hermoso como el que nos ocupa haya pasado tan desapercibido para crítica y público. Entre tanta pompa y circunstancia, era de esperar que no se encontrase cabida para ella en un palmarés tan conservador y complaciente, como finalmente así aconteció. Sin embargo, esta producción independiente canadiense consigue rentabilizar su escasez de medios y robar el corazón del espectador más sensible mediante una bizarra historia de <em>“amour fou”</em> de aliento mágico, sentimental y bastante perverso.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;">Chep (notablemente encarnado por Michael Pitt) es un <em>“borderline”</em> cinéfilo que trabaja como recadero en un polvoriento y grotesco almacén de <em>atrezzo</em>. Debido a su esquiva e indefensa personalidad, rayana en el autismo, mantiene una inexistente relación con el mundo exterior. Vive en el mismo almacén, rodeado de los más extravagantes cacharros y sólo sale para ir a un pequeño cine de barrio donde, cada noche, devora con expresión dulce y obsesiva el mismo y trágico melodrama. Mientras sueña con vivir un romance de película, pasa por la vida como un fantasma, ajeno al tímido interés que despierta en la modosa y joven taquillera. Pero, como nos suele ocurrir a todos en estos casos, al bueno de Chep le da por enamorarse hasta las trancas de la mujer menos indicada... </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;">Cuando una hermosa directora de arte llamada Fran (interpretada por una de mis más recientes debilidades personales, Paige Turco) le encarga una serie de excéntricos pedidos de <em>atrezzo</em> –el primero de ellos, los ojos de rinoceronte a los que alude el título- para el rodaje en el que está trabajando, Chep se ve obligado a incurrir en una escalada ascendente de robos y hurtos con el único fin de satisfacer a su amada.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;">Ocultando su identidad bajo una entrañable máscara de Tor Jhonson (en todo un ejemplo de galantería <em>“freak”</em>), intenta ganarse el favor de Fran haciendo las veces de torpe merodeador nocturno. Sus patéticos progresos criminales le ponen en el punto de mira de un pintoresco detective de policía amante de los musicales (un divertidísimo Gale Harold, antes de <em>“petarlo”</em> todo en “Queers as Folks”), Chep inicia un lento descenso a los abismos de la locura, manteniendo una turbulenta relación pasional con Fran en su mundo imaginario de romance en <em>cinemascope</em>...</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;">Lo demás, ya se sabe: amor, piezas de ortopedia, dedos índices seccionados de raíz, alucinaciones visuales y sonoras. Mal rollo del bueno; y encima, bonita. </span></p>

<p>1) This afternoon I filmed a music video with Corey, but the editing of it will not be finished tonight, due to an excruciating migraine that I developed some twelve hours ago and it continues to eat away at my brain. I am very excited to finally  find myself picking up the camera again. The footage was fun and will be even more of a good time to edit, which I entirely miss doing. I can say that you will want to check it out upon its completion, which will most likely be tomorrow. It features a song by Dan Deacon.</p>
<p>2) I have officially put an end to the disease of being unable to watch films at home, which I was diagnosed with several months ago. It is unknown as to what the cure to this was, but I am happy to say that I came out of it all without entering chemotherapy. It is a great feeling to be watching some of the films I missed out on lately.</p>
<p>3) In the very, very near future I will have consistent time with an awesome new laptop, which I am confident will help me finally make good on my promise to deliver more frequent reviews on this establishment. I think there's no betting against the combination of Panera Bread, dark and vibrantly brewed coffee, an XPS laptop, and me. I will make it happen.</p>

<p>5A) Tomorrow, two good things will be happening. Immediately when I wake up I will be going to rent the three films that are seeing new release and that I have been anticipating for months. The one that is most desired is the James C. Strouse-directed, John Cusack-acted, and Clint Eastwood-scored, <em>Grace Is Gone</em>. It was sadly never released at the Keystone Art Cinema as it was promised. The same has also happened with this year's David Gordon Green-directed <em>Snow Angels</em>, which I will never fully get over. If you know me, then chances are you know that Cusack has always been one of the highest actors on my list, and with this newest role being considered among his best, I cannot wait for tomorrow morning. Another film on the list of three promising releases this week is Woody Allen's latest effort, another attempt at all-out drama, <em>Cassandra's Dream</em>. It had a couple weeks of runtime earlier this year at the Art Cinema, but I just couldn't manage to make it out. Tomorrow I will watch it and give my apologies to the great Allen for missing my first film of his in theaters since 1999's <em>Sweet and Lowdown</em>. The third film of the trio, and the one I chose to watch as the finale of them all, is Paul Schrader's <em>The Walker</em>, in which it seems Woody Harrelson gets another chance at a significantly dominant starring role in the vein of <em>Natural Born Killers</em>, and <em>The People vs. Larry Flynt</em>. Perhaps I am saving the best for last? I will soon find out.</p>
<p>5B) Later on in the day I will be going to an interview, which I fully expect to nail in the easiest of ways. Needless to say at this point, I am extremely unhappy with my IMAX projectionist job...or <em>was</em> I extremely unhappy with the IMAX projectionist job that I spontaneously quit? If that question lingers inside your head as you're reading this, then there is even more reason to watch the music video Corey and I filmed today. The answer is there. Anyway, some new directions will most likely be starting tomorrow, regardless.</p>
<p>6) I have become exhausted with the A-F rating system that I have used on films for the past I don't know how long. I have reached back to the 1-4 stars that I began with in the very beginning...I'm talking about classic Frankton High School "Fergy Reviews" column days. How has it already been 8 years since journalism class? That's sort of scary.</p>
<p>7)  Last weekend, filming began on  the latest full-length Neckbrace Substitute film. I will not reveal much on this under-wraps project, but I will tell you that it is a documentary collaboration with Tony Marshall and an extension of various members of his family. I hope you all will watch when we finish it in July and have it available later that month.</p>
<p>That is all that seems to be happening right now. I am happy that things are apparently keeping my mind occupied on being productive. FERGUSON REVIEWS will not fall into nothingness with constant delays between posts. I am making this a place to cuddle up in and stay. Grab a beverage or something and make yourself feel at home. What's mine is yours.</p>

<p>anyway, on another note. I watched <a href="http://wip.warnerbros.com/funnygames/">Funny Games</a> wtf. it's a remake of an Austrian horror film. Let's just say, two kids in white gloves show up to your house and then you all die. oh, but before that you'll be mind fucked and tortured, and then die.</p>
<p>also, i definitely just went to the website...if you "play the game" WTF dude, freals, if someone sent that to me i'd knife them...just sayin...</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At one time I aspired to be an actor, although I do enjoy acting I don't wish to be a movie star anymore. In fact I'm glad I failed (call it cognitive dissidence) for if I succeeded I would probably be dead from a cocaine overdose or sexual disease.</p>
<p>I did get the opportunity to work with many celebrities, here is a short list.</p>
<p>Robert Deniro</p>
<p>Bruce Willis</p>
<p>Benecio Deltoro</p>
<p>Michael Pitt</p>
<p>Billy Bob Thornton</p>
<p>Tommy Lee Jones</p>
<p>Cate Blanchett</p>
<p>Demi Moore</p>
<p>Most of this came from working as an Extra or Stand In and the experiences where amazing. Having these films on my resume helped in auditions and got me some major roles in independent films. Too bad those films never went anywhere.  Bruce Willis was a really cool guy, I went to a party he threw and he made a point to talk to me and remember my name. That just doesn't happen in Hollywood. We drank and partied all night. Bruce had his band there and played harmonica and blues. It was nights like that I wished I could make it, coming so close to the action just tears your heart out.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Há dez anos eu me horrorizava com <strong>Violência Gratuita</strong>, produção austríaca do diretor alemão <strong>Michael Haneke</strong>, numa sessão da Mostra de Cinema.</p>
<p>Incomodou-me a tal ponto que cheguei a pensar em sair da sala, tal qual senhoras judias fazem hoje quando caem de pára-quedas em sessões de filmes politicamente incorretos ou sexualizados demais para as chupadoras de balas de menta dos Jardins.</p>
<p>Hoje, meus horizontes se abriram, e é possível que eu não fique nada desconfortável quando vir <strong>Funny Games</strong>, remake da mesma história, dirigido pelo próprio Haneke, mas agora com produção americana.</p>
<p><strong>Naomi Watts</strong> (uma Nicole Kidman com escolhas menos desastrosas) e <strong>Michael Pitt </strong>(que tem se especializado em papéis controversos) encabeçam o elenco desse filme que conta a história de um casal (Watts e <strong>Tim Roth</strong>) com um filho pequeno que recebem a visita de dois jovens (Pitt e <strong>Brad Corbet</strong>), os quais propõem um jogo perigoso, sádico e com um fim imprevisível.</p>
<p>Depois de várias vezes adiada, agora a data é 19 de setembro para conferirmos se Michael Haneke (de Caché e A Professora de Piano) doura a pílula quando a produção envolve cifras mais altas ou se era este blogueiro que tinha estômago deveras sensível quando mais jovem.</p>
