Bien, y saliendo un poco del panorama nacional, quiero expresar mi apoyo al pueblo mexicano, que tambien ha tenido una semana (y mas) bastante "desagradable", al regero de sangre que va dejando los carteles de la droga hay que sumarle los problemas con los maestros y la siempre mala situacion del estado de Chiapas. Esperemos que el bienestar se haga un hueco en la sociedad y crezca rapidamente para todos y no solo para unos pocos corruptos.

En fin, mucho me temo que para este post voy a tener que poner muchas etiquetas variopintas.

a) Speedy González.

"El ratón más veloz de todo México", es un personaje animado de la serie Looney Tunes de Warner Brothers. Sus características más importantes son su increíble velocidad y su acento mexicano. Generalmente usa un gran sombrero amarillo y ropa blanca.

En algunos capítulos Speedy está en compañía de su primo, Liborio El Lento Rodríguez, "el ratón más lento de México". Lento constantemente se metía en problemas y su primo debía rescatarlo.

Las caricaturas de Speedy González han sido criticadas por estereotipar a los mexicanos. Los ratones mostrados son flojos, bebedores y mujeriegos, Speedy, además, usa un gran sombrero y toca en una banda de mariachi, cruza la frontera con Estados Unidos y roba comida para los ratones hambrientos de México.

b) Cantinflas Show.

En CANTINFLAS SHOW nos encontramos el humor típico de Cantinflas y su manera de hablar rápida e incongruente.

Su caricatura fue diseñada por el animador español José Luis Moro, propietario de los “Estudios Moro” y creador de “La familia Telerín” (1965), quien se encargó del episodio piloto en el año 1972 mientras que gran parte de la serie se realizó en la década de 1980, en los legendarios estudios de Hanna-Barbera.

La serie va dirigida a un público infantil quien a través del personaje central de Cantinflas va introduciendose en contenidos educativos, dividiendo sus episodios entre temas científicos, geográficos y artísticos donde comparte aventuras con artistas como Leonardo da Vinci quien se encuentra desesperado porque la Gioconda no sonríe hasta que llega, naturalmente, Cantinflas; Rembrandt, maestro del arte barroco holandés; Pablo Ruiz Picasso quien aparece al inicio como un fantasma y Cantinflas llega a posar para el arte abstracto; Francisco de Goya y su malhumor al ver a Cantinflas tratando de imitarlo en su arte.

c) Katy la Oruga.

Katy es una pequeña oruga que decide un día irse del cerezo, donde vive con sus hermanas, para conocer bien todo el bosque. Unos malvados cuervos quieren comérsela, pero una luz milagrosa de la Madre Naturaleza le salva. Entonces la luz le pregunta el porqué de su marcha de casa, ella responde: "Quisiera encontrar mi verdadera vocacion" y asi empieza una aventura inolvidable para Katy.

Esta coproduccion mexicana-española de una pequeña oruga que sueña con ser mariposa derivo en una secuela donde Katy tiene 2 oruguitas (kiki y koko), que se meten en apuros cuando unos alinigenas intentan conseguir alimento en nuestro planeta.

d) El Santo.

Esta serie de animacion producida por Cartoon Network, es la primera que se ubica en la ciudad de México y en la que podrá verse el Ángel de la Independencia, el periférico y muchos otros lugares significativos.

Es un homenaje a el enmascarado de plata (icono de la cultura pop en mexico). En ella El Santo podrá volar con unas botas especiales, tiene un Santomóvil, y un vehículo anfibio llamado El mantarraya 1. La voz del villano, el Doctor Clon, la hace Daniel Giménez Cacho, mientras su ayudante, Adenaido, es interpretado por Omar Chaparro. A El Santo lo hace Alberto Millet, quien dobló la voz de El Santo en muchas de sus películas del siglo pasado.

e) ¡Mucha lucha!

Es una serie animada producida por Warner Bros Animation.  Debido a que esta serie está relacionada con el Spanglish se pueden ver en varias escenas, títulos de episodios y lenguaje en español.

La trama se centra en Ricochet, Buena girl y The Flea, -mejor conocidas como "Las tres mascaritas"-, tres estudiantes de lucha libre, que viven en una ciudad donde todo está relacionado con la lucha libre . Ellos vivirán grandes aventuras y pelearan por "el honor, familia, tradición y donas".

La serie tiene un lenguaje y relación con el pueblo mexicano (por eso su nombre esta en español), una prueba de ello, es que un episodio esta dedicado a la fecha histórica y festividad mexicana de la Batalla de Puebla del cinco de mayo y al Gral. Ignacio Zaragoza,y en otro se puede ver una dedicatoria al Gral. Emiliano Zapata.

f) El hombre abejorro

Personaje de los Simpson, tambien conocido como El hombre abeja, es un cómico de origen mexicano que trabaja en el Canal Ocho haciendo el papel de un abejorro al que le suelen ocurrir desgracias. Su nombre real es Pedro.

El personaje es una parodia de la serie de televisión mexicana creada por Roberto Gómez Bolaños, El Chapulín Colorado.

Dejo sin mencionar algunos otros como Serafin y los famosos huevocartoon.

El primer punto que toco la moderadora del evento, que fue pregunta expresa para el Doctor Meyer, fue si habría viabilidad política en México, el con su humor casi negro, contesto que la historia le había enseñado a no dar respuestas ante estas preguntas, no tiene una bola de cristal por supuesto. A continuación y para no perderme en las cifras que dio el Dr. Meyer transcribo lo que se público al día siguiente de la conferencia:

Martín Fuentes:Democracia mexicana, en rumbo equivocado

Lorenzo Meyer, historiador y académico, comentó que no sabe para dónde vamos en este país, "pero sí sé que no vamos por donde deberíamos ir". La democracia mexicana está en riesgo de retroceder si no va a fondo, dijo y agregó que "la mediocridad del proceso político de estos años es inaceptable porque está abriendo las puertas para regresar, no para progresar".

El también columnista dijo, ante un abarrotado auditorio general de la Universidad de Guanajuato, que la transición más o menos pacífica del 2000 generó expectativas de que tenía que ir mejor, pero que, ahorita, puede decirse que esa oportunidad histórica, única, sin precedentes, "no la estamos usando bien".

Al dictar la conferencia "La viabilidad política" de "El México que puede ser", organizada por correo en colaboración con la UG, para conmemorar una década de existencia, el analista fue claro al señalar que debemos modernizarnos para exigir que la transición se convierta realmente en una consolidación y no en lo que está pasando ahora, (porque) "la mediocridad del proceso político de estos años es inaceptable porque está abriendo las puertas para regresar, no para progresar"

Meyer, quien aclaró que en las Ciencias Sociales y en la Ciencia Política "los indicadores no permiten hacer predicciones", subrayó que los mexicanos "estamos metidos en un problema de mucho fondo" y que "no queda más remedio que hacer un diagnóstico realista y ver que no estamos aprovechando el potencial histórico que nosotros mismos nos abrimos" con la alternancia política que se dio en el 2000.

También advirtió que "no tiene sentido ponerle buena cara a nuestro proceso político".

"Porque si no somos críticos a fondo de lo que está pasando, no podemos esperar que esto se modifique, que las tendencias negativas por donde vamos cambien a un signo positivo", y remarcó que si aun siendo críticos, probablemente las cosas de todas maneras no marchen bien, sí hacemos lo que dicen que hacen las avestruces, "pues peor tantito".

En ese sentido, sugirió que es obligación (pasar) "el trago amargo de estar bien concientes de que vamos más mal que bien", aunque matizó al anotar que el potencial de ir por un buen desarrollo político para llegar a un desarrollo económico y finalmente a un desarrollo social, "sí se puede", pero –precisó- con una conciencia bien clara por parte de los ciudadanos.

"Y que, en los momentos claves, tomemos las decisiones en función de un conocimiento de la estructura política y no dejarse guiar por inercias o eslogan de campaña", completó Meyer, a quien dieron un recibimiento caluroso quienes asistieron al Auditorio General de la Universidad de Guanajuato.

Esa fue la conclusión a que llegó Meyer al final de su conferencia, en la que se apoyó en indicadores para pintar un panorama de la realidad del país, después de precisar que "sólo Dios" sabe a dónde va el país.

Así, respaldado con resultados de encuestas de opinión, el doctor en Relaciones Internacionales por el Colegio de México expuso por ejemplo que, en mayo de este año, sólo el 16 por ciento de los mexicanos cree que se gobierna para beneficio de todos, aunque recordó que "la separación entre gobernantes y gobernados viene de la época de la Colonia".

Y que "algunas veces o nunca" confían en el gobierno el 76 por ciento de la población, lo que consideró "terrible", así como que cuando se dio el salto a la democracia, menos de la mitad la apoyaban como sistema político, además de que el 88 por ciento de los ciudadanos tienen poco o nada de interés en la política, por lo que podría decirse "que la mayoría decide, pero la mayoría no sabe nada" del "día a día del juego del poder".

Meyer Cosío, quien definió al régimen priista como "el sistema autoritario más exitoso del siglo 20", también habló del papel de los medios, sobre todo de la televisión, "que no ha cambiado desde que nació como la secretaría de propaganda del PRI" y con la que más se informan los ciudadanos, a pesar de que el análisis de la realidad mexicana está más en la prensa escrita.

Las elecciones de 2006 y sus consecuencias no quedaron al margen y ante alumnos y profesores y público en general, así como políticos de diversas tendencias y funcionarios públicos, expuso que en agosto de ese año el 51 por ciento dijo que no sabía si vivía en democracia y en junio de este año el 36 por ciento de la población consideró que en esos comicios hubo fraude.

"Para que una democracia funcione, el ciento por ciento debe decir que no hubo", apuntó, y quien también curso estudios de posgrado en el Departamento de Ciencia Política de la Universidad de Chicago subrayó además que "para que el sistema funcione el perdedor debe aceptar que perdió", en alusión a la postura que ha mantenido desde entonces Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Subrayó que el gasto que se invirtió en las elecciones fue "enorme" y "pobre" el resultado desde esa óptica, todo "un desastre en términos de mercado" que imputó al Instituto Federal Electoral.

También incluyó en su disertación la credibilidad en las instituciones y subrayó que la mayoría de los mexicanos creen más en las de corte autoritario: universidades, Iglesia y Ejército, que datan de la época colonial, y no en las que tienen qué ver con la democracia, como partidos políticos y el IFE que resulta "tan caro".

Arrancó un espontáneo aplauso entre muchos de los asistentes al manifestar que "cuando alguien dijo ‘al diablo con sus instituciones’, es que ya se fueron al diablo…hace tiempo, no hay confianza en ello (y) no es que lo diga yo, lo dicen las cifras, salvo que Mitofsky mienta".

A continuación expuso, también respaldado en indicadores, que en agosto del 2006 el 26 por ciento de la población estimó que las leyes en México se usan como pretexto para cometer arbitrariedades, mientras que un mayor porcentaje consideró que "para defender los intereses de la gente con poder".

Reconoció que sí existe actualmente pluralismo político, y que los ciudadanos aceptan autodefinirse como de izquierda, derecha o de centro en el espectro político, aunque insistió en que no tienen relación con la clase política porque incluso ni a nivel estatal –sin exceptuar a esta entidad– tienen idea de cómo se llama quien los gobierna.

El autor de "El cactus y el olivo" también mostró indicadores que reflejan la desigualdad social del país que también se manifiesta por regiones, y expuso que eso, y la falta de dinamismo en la economía, constituyen un obstáculo para la democracia y formuló una pregunta para la que dijo no tener respuesta: "¿Hasta dónde aguanta la desigualdad política a la desigualdad social?" en un país donde vive el segundo o tercer hombre más rico del planeta, Carlos Slim.

Puntualizó que existen otros obstáculos, como la corrupción, rubro en el que México "está entre Ghana y Panamá" con un 3.5 en una escala de 10 puntos como máximo, y la inseguridad, renglón en el que destacó que las ejecuciones pasaron de 667 en el 2004 a 2 mil 275 el año pasado, mientras que en éste suman ya 3 mil 400.

Al concluir la conferencia, llovieron preguntas a Meyer para conocer su opinión en torno a temas vigentes como la necesidad de una nueva cultura ciudadana, la participación del Ejército "para cuidarnos", la cual, advirtió Meyer, "va a cobrar" en su momento esa institución que "siempre ha sostenido al régimen", incluido el actual.

Recordó que sacar el Ejército a las calles fue una de las primeras acciones de Felipe Calderón, quien se puso "ese uniforme rarísimo, esa mezcla de civil con uniforme" con el que "estéticamente quedó derrotado".

Los contrapesos políticos y el papel de la sociedad para suplir a los partidos, inmersos "en una crisis de representatividad", fueron otras preguntas que se plantearon a Meyer, a quien también pidieron opinar si el mexicano es un Estado Fallido, y tras definir que es aquel "que no tiene capacidad para cumplir con sus obligaciones mínimas, como la defensa de la vida, la integridad física de los ciudadanos y su propiedad", sostuvo que "diría que en esa parte ya es un Estado Fallido".

Al ver como se iban haciendo pequeños, las autoridades presentes, tanto de la Universidad como del Estado, me quedaron varías inquietudes, la primera, Lorenzo Meyer ha pasado toda su vida en la Universidad, como estudiante, catedrático e investigador, dijo que si la Universidad la conociéramos por dentro dejaría por mucho de ser una institución creíble, ahí las autoridades presentes con todo y rector se hicieron pequeños.

Mi siguiente reflexión es el papel que jugamos ahora los que nos atrevemos a leer un blog o a cometer el pecado de escribir en ellos, para hacer un poco de conciencia en los lectores despistados que pasan por aquí, si bien el lo dijo mejor que yo, no somos buenos ciudadanos, el ir a votar y sentirnos que hemos cumplido con nuestra obligación no nos hace ser buenos ciudadanos, lo que nos haría ser buenos ciudadanos es exigir a las autoridades que cumplan con lo que han prometido, que cumplamos con decirle al vecino, al compañero, al amigo que se interese por los asuntos políticos, no dejemos que la televisión y el spot decida por nosotros. Pensemos y exijamos todos los días desde abajo para que nuestro voto sea verdaderamente valido.

Y vuelvo a retomar el tema de Germán Martínez, al decir “guanajuatizar” el país, bueno Guanajuato es el penúltimo estado de la república mexicana que conoce el nombre de su Gobernador, lo que quiere decir que bien poco nos interesa la política, o el perfil del Gobernador es tan bajo porqué no hace nada. Así que si de Guanajuatizar se trata al país, es no conocer ni al mismo Presidente de México o al menos al que se ostenta como tal, lo cual en este momento sería muy bueno para él y su equipo, Germán Martínez ha dicho lo correcto, guanajuatizar es olvidar por quien votaron algunos, hacer más grises a los gobernantes del PAN, lamentablemente para mi salud, yo no me olvido de Caldeón ni de su equipo. Quiero puntualizar algo que en el periódico no han anotado, una de las gráficas que presento Lorenzo Meyer, fue el número de votos con los cuales habían ganado la presidencia de la República desde los tiempos de López Portillo hasta el 2006, sin dejar de poner en amarillo, al final de la tabla, el nombre del que miles de personas consideramos el presidente legitimo de México, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, ¿Humor negro o una realidad? Al final el Doctor Meyer, lo pone en la tabla….bien Doctor por considerarlo también como actor político de este México.

Al salir de la conferencia, el aire de octubre azotaba nuestras caras, salí con ánimos de hablar cada día de lo que veo en este país y en mi estado, ups, todo muy bien hasta que llegamos al final de las escalinatas, y ver lleno de guaruras toda la plaza principal, y un automóvil blindado del ejército, que pasa en México, para llegar a esto, si el procurador o los diputados tienen amenazas, ¿No es mejor, que lo vean por circuito interior, en la comodidad de la sala de su casa? Para no exponernos a nosotros los ciudadanos. Y recordamos lo que había dicho el Doctor, Calderón saco al ejercito a las calles, ¿qué costo político, exigirá este llamado ejército Mexicano, en el futuro por sacarlo a combatir a las calles?

Del viernes al sábado en todo el país se vivió de nueva cuenta una ola de violencia, 42 muertos en todo el país, si esto no es guerra que me digan que no pasa nada… también quiero extender mi felicitación al joven Andrés Leonardo Gómez Emilsson y a sus valientes padres, primero por el premio que recibió, con justo merecimiento, por no haber dado la mano al presidente espurio, tal y como lo increpo el joven en el acto donde fue entregado el reconocimiento, es una pena que Calderón se ponga a hablar de libertad de expresión y el estado mayor se lleve a dos jóvenes al juzgado, y que el magnánimo FECAL, diga que no presentarán cargos contra ellos ¿Qué cargos pueden fincarle ante la verdad dicha? Seguramente deberemos aprendernos este nombre, confió en que la juventud de este país tenga líderes formándose, Andrés Leonardo es para mí uno de esos jóvenes.

Estás preguntas se hacían en la edición de Conozca Más que traía al Santo en su portada. Y efectivamente el tema eran los superheroes gringos contra el único superheroe mexicano que es El Santo, el enmascarado de plata. Yo en lo personal creo que se pudo haber creado un marketing y una buena serie basada en los luchadores mexicanos que fueron figuras adoradas por chicos y grandes en este pais.

El Santo, Blue Demon, Tinieblas, Rayo de Jalisco y Atlantis son algunos de los luchadores que se hicieron famosos en los cuadrilateros y cuyas figuras encajaban bien como para hacer de ellos mucho más que personajes de Lucha Libre. Algunos recordaran a otros como Huracan Ramirez o al Supermuñeco.

Yo al menos era muy fan de Tinieblas cuando aparecía en la serie de Capulina en los 80. Me gustaba la mascara y el traje, eran perfectos entonces. Si alguien tuviera la capacidad de reinventar estos personajes y los propietarios de los nombres se unieran, se podrían hacer grandes historietas y hasta una serie animada.

Por supuesto, el más adelantado es el Hijo del Santo quien ha sacado variedad de artículos de El Santo, principalmente ropa, algunas campañas y unos capítulos en Cartoon Network. Blue Demon Jr. hace lo mismo aunque no ha llegado a los niveles de tener una serie animada, ha explotado el nombre como ha podido y hoy en día esta convertido en todo un empresario que además tuvo su propio podcast en Dixo. No se si al Hijo del Santo y a Blue Demon Jr. les convenga más estar por su cuenta explotando el nombre que les heredó sus padres ó les iría mejor si se unieran junto con otros luchadores y crear una saga increíble de historias al estilo Marvel Comics o DC.

El Santo y Blue Demon crearon sus propias leyendas gracias a las películas que protagonizaron. Tinieblas hizo lo propio en la serie de Capulina junto a Alushe. Atlantis podría funcionar como el Aquaman mexicano. Rayo de Jalisco tiene personalidad muy mexicana, al tener referencia al Estado de Jalisco que tiene relación con el mariachi y los charros. Villanos hay de sobra en las películas de los 70. Todo es cuestión de adaptar esos personajes a la actualidad. Incluso podrían incluir luchadores como Blue Panter, Pierroth, Fuerza Guerrera ó Mil Máscaras como luchadores solitarios que no dependen del grupo de El Santo, que incluso tienen una enemistad con los mismos aunque luchen tambien contra el mal, pero con intereses personales... como Civil War!!!

Pero bueno, alla ellos y su mala cabeza.

"El 2 de Octubre no se olvida"

Debo quitarme la hueva, de eso no hay duda, y me tengo que poner a trabajar en proyectos tanto escolares como creativos. Estoy haciendo un par de juegos de los que daré un avance más adelante, y también comencé a hacer un webcomic.

Me he dado cuenta que gracias al ensayo las visitas al blog se dispararon en un noventa y tantos porciento, y eso me pone contento. Es decir, esto del ensayo me hace querer escribir más ensayos informativos, y por supuesto que lo haré. Es divertido, aunque muy cansado. Me parece que a fin de año se borrará la publicidad de jectoons.net, y si no, será enm algún momento del próximo año. Les recuerdo que pueden bloquearla usando el add-on de firefox "Adblock Plus". ¿Ok?

Antes de irme, debo decir que quiero una nueva computadora. Parece que la mía se cae a pedazos, además de que iTunes o cualquier otro reproductor de música la traba. Es una pendejada. Ah, y asegurense de ver en algún momento una excelente película mexicana llamada "El Bulto", de 1992.

Personaje de gran renombre por mantener a la industria cervecera nacional dentro de las mejores empresas para trabajar en el mundo por sus prestaciones en ambitos de salud y vivienda antes de que fueran una norma. No solo eso, creador de la primera escuela tecnologica del pais y otras industrias que trataban al trabajador humanamente a pesar de ser inicios del siglo XX.

4. Lydia Cacho. Periodista que sacrifico su libertad por la verdad expuesta bajo investigaciones en casos de pedofilia donde implicaban a un empresario libanés, otro de la industria textil e inclusive se dio a conocer un soborno con un gobernador de un estado poblano.

5. Luis Buñuel*. Director, creador de grandes obras, caracterizadas por su originalidad y buena onda. REconocido por su caracteristica forma de contar historias. Mejores obras: El ángel exterminador y Los olvidados. *Naturalizado mexicano.

6. Paisanos Mexicanos. Los llamados mojados se hacen merecedores de un lugar en nuestra lista. Cruzarse la frontera, no saber el idioma (inglés) y no tener un futuro prometedor no limita a esta raza a cumplir sus sueños. Sacrificarse de esa forma por su familia. Medio comer, medio vivir y recibir un sin numero de discrimaciones, injusticias y malos ratos no hace que estas personas desistan por una vida dura que les ha tocado.

8. Ana Guevara. Corredora mexicana de gran calibre. La primera en desenmascarar el sucio mundo del deporte en México. No le importo renunciar a lo que mas amaba y ser betada de la faz del deporte y de la vida pública por decirlo de alguna forma.

9. Gloria Trevi. Mujer polémica, la odias o la amas, envuelta en un ecándalo de prostitución de chavas menores de edad en la decada de los 90´s, misma decada donde se dio a conocer con peculiar aspecto desaliñado, algo infantil, muy morboso y perturbador con un toque sexual friki demasiado avanzado para la época y su suciedad.

10. Razzo. Editor cuya única repercusión en este top fue gracias a su rol como prosumidor y falta de ética profesional de incluirse en una categoría donde nada tiene que ofrecer.

Hace 23 años Mexico se vistio de luto con un acontecimiento que estremecio no solo al Pais sino al mundo entero. Uno de los terremotos mas fuertes registrados en el mundo con 8.1 grados en la escala de Richter, cuya duración aproximada fue de poco más de dos minutos, superando en intensidad y en daños al terremoto registrado el 28 de julio de 1957 también en la Ciudad de México.

El dia de hoy se realizan simulacros en todo Mexico, recordando este terrible terremoto. Entre Geeks Corp hace un homenaje a esas victimas del terremoto, 23 años despues de sucedido. Descansen en paz.

Resulta que cuando alguien es bueno no se le da cobertura hasta que hacemos presion. Pasa lo mismo que con el futbol, nunca ganan, son mas malos que el SIDA y Calderon juntos, pero eso si, un jugador de futbol se tira un pedo y hacen una cobertura nacional, la critica, la jugada, la repeticion y por ultimo el analisis.... Hazme el chingado favor, hacen casi un pinche doctorado de eso.

En cambio, en estos momentos se esta celebrando los juegos paralimpicos, los cuales son los Juegos Olimpicos pero para personas con capacidades diferentes y quien chingados habla de ellos? nadie, tristemente nadie. Aunque ellos si ganan medallas y de ORO. Llevan 9 medallas hasta el momento, de las cuales 4 son de oro, y quien ha dicho algo? nadie, ni siquiera un puto anuncio de comerciales en la television se merecen nuestros atletas? The following article is from the League of Revolutionary Struggle (Marxist-Leninist)'s Forward: Journal of Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought - No. 2, August 1979 - "The Struggle for Chicano Liberation". This number of Forward is divided into four main sections: 1. Resolution on the Chicano national question; 2. History of the Chicano people; 3. Program for Chicano liberation; 4. Chicano art, theater, and struggles in photos. The LRS was a mostly oppressed nationality organization in the New Communist Movement, and was a predecessor group of Freedom Road Socialist Organization. They wrote extensively about the Chicano and African American national questions, in particular. I'm posting here the first part of the LRS's The Struggle for Chicano Liberation, which is appearing on the internet for the first time. Other documents from the LRS are available in Left Spot's LRS archive. Conditions change but the Chicano national question is nonetheless at the forefront of the people's struggle, especially considering its connection to the larger immigrants rights movement. I hope people find this contribution useful to better understanding these issues.

Resolution on the Chicano national question

The development of the oppressed Chicano nation is part of the general historical development of the United States. The murder, enslavement, plunder and oppression of peoples and nations has been an integral part of U.S. history. It begins with the attempted extermination of the American Indians and includes the exploitation of African slaves in the South and the annexation of the Southwest from Mexico. It is within this general context that we must view the development and oppression of the Chicano nation in the Southwest, and its struggle for liberation.

There are between 10 and 12 million Chicanos in the United States. Eighty-five percent of all Chicanos are concentrated in the southwestern part of the United States. In many areas of the Southwest, Chicanos are a majority of the population. Chicanos suffer the most brutal forms of national oppression in every aspect of their lives. They are an oppressed nation in the Southwest, fighting for freedom and equality. The hands which strangle the national aspirations of the Chicano nation belong to the monopoly capitalist class. This class is the source of all oppression and exploitation in the United States.

The working class and the Chicano people have a common enemy. They have the task of rising up and uniting against the rule of the monopoly capitalist class. To win victory over such a powerful enemy there must be unity among the workers of all nationalities, and unity among the oppressed masses of all nationalities. This unity can only come about if the working class fights against all forms of national oppression, and fights for the right of the Chicano nation to self-determination. The working class must support the right of self-determination, not because of any moralistic or humanitarian reasons, but because the oppression of the Chicano nation is a pillar of U.S. imperialist power. Imperialism cannot survive without oppressing nations and peoples. The fight for self-determination is, therefore, against imperialism. The working class supports the right to self-determination in order to win its own emancipation.

The current economic and political crisis of the United States is causing an intensification of the national oppression of Chicanos. The cold-blooded killing of Chicanos by the police has become common fact of life in the Southwest. The minimal health and social services in the Chicano community are being drastically cut back. Chicanos fill the unemployment lines, and their standard of living gets worse all the time. The quality of their education, their health care, their housing, etc., continues on a steady decline. Chicano youth are victimized by drugs, alcohol and the sense that they have no future in U.S. society. Chicano students are being forced out of colleges and universities, under the rationale that their demand for equality in education is "reverse discrimination." The simple demand of Chicano farm workers to unionize and raise their standard of living is met with the full fury of armed goons, attack dogs, and police helicopters.

The Chicano people, are, of course, fighting against every aspect of their oppression. The working class cannot stand on the sidelines and watch this fight. Its stand must be clear-cut: "Your fight is our fight." The working class must take up the fight for Chicano liberation and concretely uphold the right of self-determination for the Chicano nation. In order to fulfill this responsibility, it is critical to understand of the history of the Chicano people, and have a profound grasp of the practical aspects of their struggle for liberation.

The Chicano people have a 400 year history in the Southwest during which they developed into a nation, "a historically evolved, stable community of people, formed on the basis of a common language, territory, economic life and psychological make-up manifested in a common culture." (1) Chicanos have lived in the areas now called southern California, southwestern Arizona, New Mexico, southern Colorado and southwestern Texas. This was then part of the northern territory of Mexico, at that time a colony of Spain. Most of the inhabitants of these early settlements were mestizos (mixed Spanish and Indian heritage) who labored as feudal peones (serfs) on the large farms, ranches and missions of the feudal Spanish ruling class. During the 300 year of Spanish rule the inhabitants of the area developed a common language and culture.

After Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, the Spanish-speaking inhabitants of the Southwest started to become pat of the young, but not fully developed, Mexican nation. Capitalism also began to develop in the area, mainly through the beginning process of trade between the different settlements.  Because of the weakness of the Mexican government, it did little with the Southwest and was not able to complete its capitalist development. The area soon fell under the expansionist eye of the United States.

The southern slave owners wanted the Southwest in order to establish new slave states, while the northern mercantile capitalists wanted the ports of California to increase their trade with the Orient. After first taking over Texas, the United States launched the War of 1846 against Mexico. The better-equipped American army swept into Mexico, plundering, murdering and raping the civilian population. The U.S. won a quick and bloody victory, and annexed 45% of Mexico's territory. In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which formally ended the war, the United States pledged to respect the property and land rights of the conquered population of the Southwest. The U.S. also promised that after one year's time the conquered people would be granted full rights of American citizens. But the U.S. ruling class treated this treaty as a meaningless scrap of paper.

Following the war, the U.S. bourgeoisie consolidated its rule over the Southwest region by region. In 50 years' time they transformed the semi-feudal character of the area into a capitalist one. First of all, they brutally oppressed the conquered people who continued to resist the U.S. occupation. They then systematically eliminated the feudal and semi-feudal relations of production by seizing Chicano lands and property. Thousands of Chicanos were shot, lynched and burned out their property. Millions of acres of land were stolen by violence and fraud.

The dispossession of the Chicano people cleared the way for the complete capitalist development of the Southwest region. The Chicano people were not to become welded into a nation through the common experience of capitalist exploitation and national oppression. A complete change in the class structure of the Southwest occurred with the elimination of the feudal system. The Chicano people, who had mainly been peones before the annexation, were transformed into proletarians, semi-proletarians, small farmers or tenant farmers. A small part of the former landholding class became capitalists, closely linked economically and politically with the U.S. bourgeoisie. A number were pushed into the working class. The old artisan, craftsmen and trader strata were transformed into a strata of small businessmen, professionals and intelligentsia.

In addition to changing the class structure of the Chicano people, the rise of U.S. capitalism in the Southwest also served to link the formerly scattered areas of the Chicano settlement into a single cohesive market. The railroad played a major role in this development, breaking down the isolation of the Chicano areas of settlement and making possible, at the same time, the rapid and efficient exploitation of the riches of the Chicano nation. The Chicano proletariat, laboring under the most oppressive conditions, helped to build the great railroad network which connected Texas with New Mexico, southern Colorado and Arizona, and those areas with California. Chicanos were also superexploited and forced to dig up the huge deposits of gold, silver, copper, coal and riches of their nation. It was also superexploited Chicano labor which made possible the large-scale farming and ranching operations throughout the Southwest.

At the same time that the economic transformation of the Southwest occurred, the U.S. bourgeoisie consolidated its political domination of the Chicano people. The political rights "guaranteed" by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo offered no protection against the widespread killing and repression of the Chicano people. The U.S. bourgeoisie tried to exterminate the Chicano people. It stripped them of all political rights, robbed them of their lands and property, and denied them of any representation in the political process. The U.S. ruling class also encouraged massive Anglo immigration to the Southwest in order to try to change the character of the region.

The Chicano people were never allowed to assimilate into the dominant Anglo-American nationality. Instead, Chicanos were forced into a subordinate social and economic position, and their common experience of oppression and exploitation helped to forge them into a new nation. Their previous 300 year history had given them a common language and a common culture. The century of domination by U.S. capitalism linked the Chicano people together in a common bond of oppression and resistance to oppression.

By the beginning of the 20th century the Chicano people formed a distinct nationality within the borders of the United States. They still lived in the areas of historic Spanish settlement, spoke the Spanish language, and had a distinct national personality forged in the course of domination by both Spain and the United States.

After the First World War, the population of the Chicano nation rapidly increased due to the large migrations of Mexicans over the border. Many of these immigrants became incorporated into the Chicano nation because of the common experience of oppression and exploitation, common historical experiences, a common language and cultural similarities. For the most part, while most Mexican immigrants were welded into the Chicano nation, they also retained certain distinctions in terms of culture and their kinship to Mexico. In practice Chicanos and Mexicans faced common oppression and often united in common struggle. But not all immigrants viewed themselves as Chicanos. Besides settling the Southwest, many Mexicans also immigrated to the Midwest, following the rail lines to Chicago, Detroit, Gary and other industrial cities. Large concentrations of Mexicans and Chicanos developed in these cities, living in barrios and facing a similar oppression to that of their brothers and sisters in the Southwest. Like many other nationalities who immigrate to the U.S., and who become part of a particular nation or national minority, Mexicans face their own particular situation which is not exactly like that of Chicanos. Spanish is often their only language and this is made a handicap by the bourgeoisie to finding decent employment, obtaining necessary medical and social services, credit, etc. More than any other nationality, Mexicans are victimized by the use of deportations. Of the million or so persons who are deported by the U.S. each year, the overwhelming majority are Mexicans. This hangs as a constant threat over their heads, and is one of the most bitter forms of that oppression.

Today the Chicano people remain concentrated in the Southwest and constitue  a majority, or near majority, throughout New Mexico and in contiguous parts of Texas, Colorado, Arizona and California. Although they make up only about 12% of the total population of the five southwestern states, they make up over one-third of the poor families in that region. Most Chicanos still live in overcrowded and overpriced barrios, suffer police repression on a wide scale, and are discriminated against on the job, in the schools and in their own communities. They must fight a continual battle for their survival of their language and culture against a ruling class which teaches the Anglo-American population to look down upon them. The laboring people suffer the most as they are still being driven off their lands, and are forced to work for the lowest wages and under the worst conditions.

An important part of the history of the Southwest is that of different American Indian peoples in the area. American Indians trace their history in the Southwest back for thousands of years. They have withstood the attempts of both Spain and the United States to exterminate them. All of their lands have been stolen and they have no political rights. Many of them have been forced onto reservations which resemble concentration camps, and which are run completely by the U.S. government without any regard for the rights, customs or sentiments of the Indian peoples. During the course of their long history, the different American Indian peoples have developed their own distinct national characteristics. At the same time, their common experience of oppression and their common struggle against it has created a common bond of solidarity among the various Indian nationalities. The Indian nationalities, like the Chicano nationality, have also been denied their national rights and are waging a struggle for their complete national liberation from U.S. imperialism.

A revolutionary solution to the Chicano national question

The national question in any country is always a complex question. All peoples and nations develop differently, according to their own concrete historical conditions. Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought serves as a guide to finding a solution to the national question. Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought represents a scientific summation of the struggle of the working class. Armed with this theory, communists are able to analyze the history and present conditions of the revolutionary struggle in order to determine how to lead it to victory in the socialist revolution.

A scientific analysis of the Chicano national question shows that the source of the oppression of the Chicano people today is the monopoly capitalist class. To end national oppression, the working class and its allies must overthrow the capitalists, and replace the imperialist system with socialism. With the power of the state in its hands, the proletariat will recognize the equality of all nationalities, including the right of self-determination for oppressed nations, and solve the problems left over from the old society.

It is not enough, however, to know the goal we want to achieve. We must also know how to achieve it. In order to defeat the bourgeoisie, communists must be able to unite the proletariat, win the leadership of the Chicano national movement, and direct these two movements against the monopoly capitalist class.

To do these things it is necessary to uphold the right of self-determination for the oppressed Chicano nation. This right means that the Chicano nation has the right to determine its own destiny free the force or coercion of another nation. The Chicano nation may decide to secede and form its own state; it may decide to federate with Mexico, or even with the United States. In any case, only the Chicano people have the right to determine the future of their nation.

While communists uphold the right of self-determination, they must evaluate how it is to be exercised according to the concrete conditions which exist at the time. The state of the revolutionary movement in the United States and Mexico, international conditions, the strength of different forces in the Chicano national movement, among others, are factors which must be taken into account.

As long as imperialism rules in the U.S. it will be very difficult for the Chicano people to win their right to self-determination. To do so would require a protracted revolutionary struggle and a favorable combination of international and domestic crises which would weaken the hold of the U.S. bourgeoisie over the Southwest. Even so, without the complete overthrow of U.S. capitalism the national oppression of the Chicanos cannot be totally eliminated.

In the final analysis, to uphold the right of self-determination means that the working class of the oppressor nation repudiates the annexation of the Southwest, fights to end all national privileges and inequalities and is the most consistent fighter against national oppression. Annexation, national inequality, national privileges and national oppression are a component part of imperialism. To fight for the Chicano people's right to self-determination is, therefore, to fight against imperialism. This is the only way that the bitterness and mistrust of the Chicano people towards the oppressor nation, including the oppressor nation proletariat, can be overcome. This mistrust is rooted in their domination and enslavement by another nation. There is no other way to unite the multinational proletariat.

The bourgeoisie tries in every way that it can to sabotage the struggle for socialism. It tries to divide the workers through a system of national privileges and by spreading the poison of nation chauvinism and racism. The capitalists try to justify, in the minds of white workers, the oppression of nations and peoples by saying that the oppressed nationalities are "inferior." To overcome these divisions and raise the political consciousness of white workers, communists must educate the proletariat about the oppression of the Chicano people, fight every manifestation of chauvinism and racism, and uphold all the just demands of the Chicano people, including the right of self-determination. This stand, better than any other, will show the Chicano people that the working class has absolutely no unity with the imperialists who oppress the Chicano nation.

It is also important for communists to uphold the right of self-determination of the Chicano nation in order to help lead the Chicano national movement in a revolutionary direction. This demand, once taken up by the Chicano masses, will lead them into struggle against the U.S. capitalist class. As opposed to other partial demands, the right of self-determination presupposes a struggle for power and is aimed at a central pillar of imperialism. Self-determination simply cannot be won without a revolutionary struggle.

The Chicano people have a long and glorious history of struggle against their oppression, beginning with Spanish colonialism, through the days of U.S. conquest, up to the present. Their resistance has included armed fighting, revolts, mass demonstrations, campaigns, strikes and other forms. Chicanos have played an important role in the history of the U.S. labor movement through their struggles in the mines, railroads, fields and factories of the Southwest. The Chicano struggle has produced a large number of revolutionary fighters, many of whom have become communists. The demand for self-determination itself has been raised consistently throughout the history of the Chicano people.

Communists have a long history of struggle in the Chicano national movement. Many U.S. Marxist-Leninists developed out of the Chicano national movement of the 1960's and 1970's. They have continued to play an important role in helping to organize and lead many struggles of the Chicano people. Communists must consistently uphold their responsibility to fight in the forefront of the Chicano national movement, taking up all of the day-to-day struggles of the Chicano masses, linking these struggles to the demand for socialism and the struggle for socialism. Lenin said that, "Every act of national oppression calls forth resistance on the part of the masses of the population, and the tendency of every act of resistance on the part of oppressed peoples is the national uprising." (2) Communists today must, as many have in the past, take the lead in combating national chauvinism and narrow nationalism, strive to unite all who can be united in the struggle against national oppression, overcome the influence of reformism and revisionism in the national movement, and win over and recruit the most advanced elements from that struggle to become communists. A systematic and patient carrying out of these tasks will help communists to win, during the course of the long struggle, the leadership of the Chicano revolutionary movement. By doing so we will be upholding the basic interests of the working class, the Chicano people, and the interests of the proletarian revolution.
