Update: Treyarch has announced that the Day One Advantage will provide a high-level rifle for pre-orders, or a light machinegun for those purchasing the collector's edition. Outside of the Day One Advantage, the guns will have to be earned via gaining experience in multiplayer.

Original story: Activision is planning a wealth of downloadable content for Treyarch's upcoming shooter Call of Duty: World at War.

According to Activision publishing CEO Mike Griffith, Call of Duty: World at War will be supported by "3x the amount of content" than was supplied for Call of Duty 4, as well as "premium content called 'Day One Advantage.'"

While Activision did not detail the "Day One Advantage," blog Alt+F4 claims the feature will accelerate the earning of experience points during online play.

Only a single map pack was provided for Infinity Ward's wildly popular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The Variety Map Pack, which sold for 800 Microsoft Points ($10), was downloaded by over one million gamers in nine days, a record for Xbox Live DLC.

There is currently a vote taking place on the Bad Company website that will allow you to help choose the contents of the next map pack. This map pack will contain four of the 6 singleplayer maps converted for conquest mode. The community get to vote on two and DICE will choose the other two. The map pack will thankfully be free which is a suprise considerin EA are not usually the ones to pass up on milking gamers for money. At the moment Par for the course is leading in votes, for those of you who cannot remember thats the golf course level. With Acta Non Verba looking to be the second community selected map.

by: ~Samuel w.

---

Since the launch of Halo 3, the online component has always a favorite of mine, it was a step up even from industry favorites such as Call of Duty 4, and so it’s a no-brainer that I had purchased the original map pack day of release. Unfortunately, while still a solid map pack, it didn’t fill any holes the original set of maps lacked and while the content was good and Foundry brought some of the most beloved Forge creations, it still didn’t feel necessary. This was rectified with Bungie’s latest content pack for Halo 3, the Legendary Map Pack, touting a reimagined Sidewinder, a remade Lockout and the new Ghost Town, all of which have their place in the lineup of Halo 3 maps and in general, they’re all just fantastic maps with their own distinct feel and flow.

Blackout is the strictly remade version of fan favorite Lockout. Being a strict remake changes are few and far between, which is a good thing, as Lockout flowed extremely well, lending itself to intense encounters in almost all parts of the map. Weapon layout remains intact with all major weapons like the Sword, Shotgun, Sniper and BR in their appropriate places, with some new Halo 3 weapons scattered about. Equipment also has been added with the Bubble Shield, Power Drainer and Regenerator all on this close-quarters map. And while Halo 3 plays somewhat differently from H2, Blackout plays remarkably like its predecessor, from the chaotic upper platform remaining the focal point of mass attacks, to the Sniper able to still be launched from its perch via a well placed shot at a fusion core. The major change comes in the form of the map’s aesthetic overhaul. Gone are the snowy cliffs of Lockout’s Forerunner stricter, instead, replaced with a moon soaked weather station position high above the chilly water of the North Pole. While still in a cold atmosphere, the overall tone of the map has changed, as well as the color pallet which now instead of the bluish purple hue is a mixture of dark blues and inky blacks, making Blackout one of the more atmospheric maps in the game.

Next is Avalanche, Bungie’s reimagined Sidewinder. Not completely a remake, Avalanche plays much differently from its Halo classic. Instead of being a 60/40 split between outdoor and indoor fighting, it is now an almost completely vehicle based map, lending itself extremely well to btb games of all sorts. The pacing of the map has also changed, with matches ending quicker and with fewer stalemates then before. Walking is now an option thanks to the multiple man cannons scattered throughout the map, allowing for quick jumping from point to point. Avalanche is the first map to introduce the Hornet to multiplayer, which now lacks its rockets but with its turrets still remaining. While gimped, it can still dominate an area for a long time, making both a great offensive and defensive vehicle whose only real rival is the dreaded S’Plazer, which conveniently spawns in the middle of map. The look of Avalanche stays with the original’s look and feel with some tweaks to the setting which now sits upon an arctic shelf on ***Spoiler*** Installation 04 v2 ***Spoiler***. With some pretty major pacing changes and some new tweaks to transportation, Avalanche is a worthy successor to the Halo classic and a welcome addition to Halo 3’s set of maps.

Rounding out this map pack is Ghost Town, the only original map in this bunch. Taking place in a long ruined water distribution facility, positioned deep within Sierra 117’s jungles, Ghost Town feels like a mix between Halo 2’s Sanctuary and Turf. The pacing of the map is also quite like Turf, with frenetic fire fights popping up from every corner of the map. It is extremely hard to predict where enemy fire is going to come from as the map is asymmetrical, with some fantastic sightlines and many places to ambush; Ghost Town is best played with Slayer, Team Slayer or Oddball game variants. While not as tight as Blackout, Ghost Town still features some pretty close quarters, especially within its ruined and broken down buildings. The staying power of this map has to be one of the greatest assets it has, as it is completely unpredictable, every game played on it flows and feels completely different, and while being continuously ambushed can become frustrating, learning where to ambush people yourself becomes half the fun of the map. Best played with 8-10 people, Ghost Town plays differently then any map in Halo 3’s catalog and because of that, it fits perfectly among some of the other fan favorites.

Three fantastic maps, one an old classic, one a new take on a fan favorite and one that is bound to become a hit among the fans, but these are not the only things to be offered in the Legendary Map Pack. Also included are many new Forge objects, many of which are tailored specifically for the maps they take place on. Avalanche includes special sniper perches that work well for both offensive and defensive purposes. Ghost Town has scaffolding that can be placed to completely change the flow and balance of the map. And Blackout has doors which can completely close off areas such as the Green Room or the Sword Room. Also included and on a completely less serious note is the addition of screen filters. By now most players have discovered the screen washing filters that can be taken advantage of by placing the camera in an explosion, completely changing the tone of a screenshot. Bungie has taken notice and has added 6 filters which be added to the three new maps via Forge, to be enjoyed by anyone in Custom Games. There are the obvious ones like the Black and White and Juicy filter, which makes everything oversaturated, to the more obscure like the Pen & Ink, turning the game into a scene straight out of Sin City. There is also the lovingly called Gears Filter which tones down all the colors to make the game feel very gloomy, the Old Timey filter putting everything in Sepia Tone and the Nova filter which looks like someone smeared a jar of Vaseline onto your screen. While a completely unnecessary addition, they can be a lot of fun and actually in some cases can change the actual flow of a map.

The Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack is a shining example of what to charge $10 for, it adds maps that fill out layouts that may have been lacking within the shipped game, as well as maps that both feel and play distinctly different from each other. Most importantly, all three of the new maps are just plain fun, whether it be the unpredictability of Ghost Town, or the nostalgia of Blackout, the Legendary Map Pack is a must have for any Halo 3 fan or anyone looking to getting back into Halo 3 after being burned out on the original maps.

The new Legendary maps are great. Better than the Heroic map pack in my opinion. I was surprised by the size and beauty of Avalanche. I really like the map for large team multi-player. Ghost town is cool also. Easy to get lost in the beginning playing this one. Players who memorize the layout and positions of weapons will definitely have a huge advantage on the board during rumble pit games. One of my new favorites is Blackout! A remake of Halo 2's Sidewinder. It's the same oil rig you fought on that was partially lodged into the ice. You'll fight on a new rig, same layout, at night positioned over an ice flow somewhere far north of the equator. See you on XBOX Live.

No this is not a big day for any of the traditional reasons that someone might say it is a big day. I am not buying a house, having a child, getting a new car or going on vacation. This is the look of someone who is watching the Legendary Map Pack download onto his Xbox 360. So not only do I plan on playing those sometime during the day but my actual playing of them will be delayed by a Rock Band party tonight at church.

We are having an event for the high school kids who do not have a small group so kind of an outreach to church kids. It should be a lot of fun and I am still totally excited for it. I think some of my boys will be there and that would be amazing because they totally shred.

Work actually could be significant as well. I finally got the change order paperwork from the contractor after two weeks of hounding on a daily basis. I looked over them briefly and I am pretty sure that they included things that were already in the contract so I am bracing myself for having to tell them that after all this time and all of my clarification to make sure they did their job they really did not. I think that (my apologies if you are or are related to a contractor) contractors really have no business sense. They are great at the mechanical building and even good at the organization of that but when it comes to being accurate with numbers, holy crap has this been a nightmare of inaccuracies.

Maybe more later probably be a busy day. At least shots tomorrow of playing games.

The COD4 map pack is almost here. I've never seen so many people excited for a map pack before. In fact, I don't think I've seen so many people say they plan to start up COD4 for the maps... it's odd in a strange way.

Anyway, they are coming. In fact... they're coming at 6:30 AM according to Infinity Ward's community manager's blog. Don't know about you, but I will definitely hop on to Xbox Live tomorrow and spend 800 points on those four brand new spanking maps.

In other online multiplayer news, IGN PS3 reports that Resistance 2 will have 8 player co-op.

Yes you read that right.

8 player co-op.

Eight.

One more than seven.

Wow.

They have some more vids and a link to a video of Ted Price, who is head of Insomniac for those not in the know, talking about R2 right over here.

Is everyone gonna release a trailer for map packs now? First Infinity Ward... and now Bungie? Anyway, here's the trailer for the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack courtesy of GamingBits on Youtube, going on sale April 15, 2008 on Xbox Live for 800 points.

Everyone in the gaming industry knows that Call of Duty 4 is probably the best shooter out now. With it's great graphics and war intensity no one can stand up to it. So the game is called Call of Duty 4. There has already been 1-3 so it makes you wonder if there will be a 5th game released.

So lets look at some history of the Call of Duty franchise. Call of Duty "1" was released on October 29th, 2003. This was a fairly good game and started the franchise in World War II. The only real competition during this time was Medal of Honor but even that was a little short of Call of Duty. One great thing about the earliest Call of Duty game is that it was able to be played in multiplayer this is something that most other war game's of it's time didn't have.

On October 25th, 2005 Infinity Ward release the second game in the franchise Call of Duty 2. This is a great game for its time, and it has a great multiplayer feature. I have this game an I know first hand that it is a fantastic game. I personally think that this is the point when Call of Duty really starts to break away from all of the over war games out there.

The next game to be released was Call of Duty 3. That was on November 6th, 2006 and it was only released for the Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3. This also was a WWII game and turned out really good for some of the big consoles out there.

The newest and I think best Call of Duty ever made was Call of Duty 4. Call of Duty 4 was released on November 5th, 2007. This game is great because they put in some big multiplayer enhancements that made the game very famous and exciting to play. The two big ones where the ranks and create a class. I have played Call of Duty 4 and can tell you that both of these features work very well.

So, most of the Call of Duty's are released around late October or very early November. The question is "will there be another Call of Duty?". To answer this in one word I would say yes. But, personally I don't think it would be soon. The reason why is, they are still working on Call of Duty 4. As you probably know the new map pack is coming out anytime now (which should be some great maps) and there will most likely be more on the way.

Even though it might not be coming out soon, there is still some talk of Call of Duty 5 already. At this link it refers to Call of Duty 5 as "in the pipe" so we know that someone is thinking about it. One thing I am interested to see is what they change from Call of Duty 4 to 5. I'm guessing that they will still stay in Iraq in the current war because they were on WWII for 3 games, I don't think it will change anytime soon.

Since details on the maps have been pretty scattered throughout the internet, I thought I’d give you guys a comprehensive breakdown of each map in the upcoming Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare along with some suggestions on gametypes, classes, and a few more screenshots to look over; all in one location. For those of you who don’t know, these maps will be hitting in April and will be 800 MS Points (same pricing for PSN). Along with the map pack will be a few minor changes to the game, including a tweak to Clan Tags to re-allow special characters.

Individual DLC Map Descriptions:Broadcast
Its size and alternating routes make “Broadcast” great for large team games. A large, multi-story television station with plenty of window vantage points creates the perfect setting for floor-to-floor combat. The station is surrounded by extensive outdoor areas consisting of a long parking lot, surrounding buildings with sniping hiding spots and side-rooftop access to the top and bottom floors of the television station.

Creek
A large wide open village in the woods, “Creek” consists of heavy foliage, great for sniper cover: a deep ravine offers an excellent vantage point for ambushes; an underground cave offers an alternate evasion route; and various multi-floor houses populate a patchwork of connected farmland. This extensive open map is great for snipers with plenty of natural coverage consisting of rocks and trees. There are various routes for advancement from both high and low vantage points over and underneath the hillsides. Another great map for large team games.

Chinatown
A modern revision of the classic Call of Duty “Carentan” map, “Chinatown” takes players to the foggy downtown district of a Chinatown. A night time setting, the cityscape is well lit by the full moon and the glow of brightly colored lanterns and neon lights from local businesses. This district offers a variety of open-street and interior settings, perfect for fire fights throughout the connected roads, courtyards, antique shops and markets within it. Great for all game types and players.

Killhouse
“Killhouse” is an enclosed warehouse made of plywood structures, mock-ups and speed-run courses used for training, creating the right mix of obstacles for small team games or free-for-alls with a variety of soft and hard cover points spread throughout the entire ground level

Yesterday I found that Halo 3's Heroic Map Pack was free, and quickly downloaded it in case the price was a rare glitch. Turns out it wasn't. Now anyone can download the three maps for free from the Xbox Live Marketplace. However, the Legendary Map Pack, due out on April 15th, will never be free. At least that's what some random kid told me while I waited for my first game at Standoff...

Looking back though, I did find the three maps a tad disappointing, especially Foundry. And I know that Foundry was really meant to be a giant sandbox for Forge mode, but Forge is so hard to use the place is pretty much useless. But for free, who can really complain!

Here are some pictures of the awesome looking maps in the upcoming Legendary pack:
