I guess you could call this a Season Preview but we'll just call it the Game Preview. Also, today is my birthday!

Back on October 5, 2005, the New York Rangers played a game for the first time in over a year. The NHL was finally back after a lock-out that led to the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 season.

It had been 8 years since the Rangers had last made the playoffs--when they lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals--and the idea that the Rangers were going to end the drought was ludicrous. That year, almost every "expert" had picked the Rangers to finish 30th in the NHL.

Honestly, did you have much faith in that team? Look at the lineup they sported for the 2005-2006 season opener against the Flyers:

Rucinsky-Nylander-Jagr
Straka-Ruccin-Hossa
Moore-Betts-Ward
Hollweg-Lundmark-Ortmeyer

Rozsival-Malik
Poti-Strudwick
Tyutin-Kasparaitis

Weekes
Lundqvist

Admit it. You looked at that team and thought, "We're screwed!" But Slats was keeping his word; the Rangers were rebuilding. We couldn't expect greatness in the first year. Honestly, I would have been content no matter what happened that season. But what happened that year stunned everybody.

The Rangers sat in first place in the Atlantic Division until the very last day of the season when they were passed by both the Devils and the Flyers. More importantly, for the first time since 1997, the Rangers had made the playoffs and Jaromir Jagr broke the Rangers single season records for both goals (54) and points (123).

Now fast forward to this season. The Rangers come into the game with a 2-0-0 record with two wins over the Tampa Bay Lightning last weekend in Prague.

Here is the line up that the Rangers sported for the first two games of the season:

Naslund-Gomez-Drury
Dawes-Dubinsky-Zherdev
Prucha-Korpikoski-Callahan
Voros-Betts-Orr

Rozsival-Redden
Girardi-Kalinin
Staal-Mara

Lundqvist
Valiquette

Only two, yes two, players from the 2005 opening night roster are still on the team. Only one of them actually played in that game! Petr Prucha was called up from Hartford soon after the start of the season and stayed up for most of it. But still that is only 3 players that remain from the October 5, 2005 to October 4, 2008. Speaking of Petr Prucha, of all the players currently on the roster, he has the most games played and most goals scored as a Ranger.

Looking ahead to this season, the Rangers are a younger, faster, more offensive minded team that can still shut things down when needed. The problem is that almost every offseason move the Rangers made is counting on the player playing better because of a change in scenery. So far, Naslund and Redden have scored goals. Zherdev has shown how wonderfully he can control the puck but has not finished. He does have the potential to set up many goals for Brandon Dubinsky. I really hope Zherdev doesn't end up like Matt Cullen did with the Rangers.

There were some questions heading into this season about Dubinsky. Would he have the dreaded sophomore slump? Would he be able to produce without Jagr on his wing? We're only 2 games into the season, but Dubinsky doesn't look like he's going to hit the proverbial wall any time soon. He was arguably the best player on the Rangers throughout the Preseason and has skated very well with new linemate Nikolai Zherdev.

Some other young players that must prove themselves are Nigel Dawes, Ryan Callahan, and believe it or not, Petr Prucha. Dawes and Callahan will most likely thrive in a faster and more offensive minded environment. As will Prucha who is scratched for tonights game. But Tom Renney has to give Prucha more ice time. At least some more time on the Power Play.

As for any predictions, I think the Rangers will fight for control of the Atlantic with the Penguins for the majority of the Season. They will probably end up finishing in second place in the division which is good enough for 4th or 5th in the Eastern Conference.

Tonight, the Rangers will hold their true home opener against the Chicago Blackhawks. This team made a big splash in the free agency market by signing Brian Campbell to an 8 year contract for about $56.8 million. They also improved in goal with the addition of Cristobal Huet. This team is young and looking to prove themselves. They were very close to making the playoffs last season and you can be sure that New Captain Jonathan Toews and Sophomore Patrick Kane will skate circles around our defense at least once.

Hopefully the Rangers can find their scoring and break out against Huet who they have been fairly good against in recent memory.

I will be at the game and I might snap some pictures. I'll post them later tonight if I can along with the recap.

the first time i ever saw madonna live was during drowned world. not her best according to most fan

the first time i ever saw madonna live was during drowned world. not her best according to most fans and critics, but this was her first tour after a LONG time, i'd say at least, in 8 years. i just graduated from college that time and my friend stephanie and i were obsessed fans. we had assigned her boyfriend to keep hitting that reload button to get us seats. we spent 100 dollars each for not-so-great ones, but it was still quite memorable. it was a religious experience and i actually shed a tear when madge sang holiday.

fast forward 7 years, it seemed appropo that both my mother madonna and i are celebrating milestone birthdays this year and i grabbed the first chance to get awesome seats for the sticky and sweet tour. this whole trip and concert were my birthday gifts to myself(i know, along with many other things. LOL.).

i did notice that most madonna concert-goers were..uhmm...a little bit older now. the people in our area were at least my age and older(and let me just say it out loud, they/we were very stereotypical madonna fans, if you know what i mean *wink* ). well, sure, the tickets for the floor were pretty exorbitant for a concert(proper day jobs were more than needed to get those prized seats). but i guess, as much as madonna remains to be youthful-looking in her 50 years, we are all not the same age as we were 26 years ago. in fact, i'm a little afraid to ask what kids nowadays think of madonna.

wave your hand if you're a madonna fan!

anyway, the highlight for me was the amazing, and i mean AMAZING version of like a prayer. i don't usually enjoy techno-ized remixes but this was breathtaking. i love like a prayer as it is but to make me love it more? WOW. i'm still getting goosebumps just listening to random youtube audio clips. you would have to be made of stone if you didn't get up and dance during this part of the concert. another fabulous part, as corny as this may sound, was the interlude that had a remix of the eurythmics' here comes the rain again and madonna's rain. unexpected yet perfectly matched, it was pure genius!

seeing madonna live again revitalizes the not-so-inner fan girl in me. the madonna concert, even if this isn't my first time anymore, remains to be a pure religious experience. she keeps working harder and harder to up the ante and she's in her 50s!

and what is a madonna concert without madonna diva-queens!

Ah, yes. Retro Jam '08 w/ KRS-One, Rakim, Bobby Brown (yes, Crackhead Supreme), & my Favorite, Keith Sweat!

Big ups to my man Mike for hooking everything up!

So, I was a tad bit late, but it was ok.

Paul Anthony & Bowlegged Lou of Full Force hosted the show, & did a good job of it-- they certainly kept me entertained.

Ain't it always good to hear from them?

KRS One was 1st up, and of course, all the 'Real Hip Hop' Heads were in the house. U know, people that look like:

But his message was positive as usual and always refreshing to hear.

Then Rakim, who appeared to be madd bent came on the stage. Now I was led to believe this because he didn't do much moving around the stage, but when he did,

Dat's my songg tho!!!

It was about that time when they found (Well, just Grandmaster Dee @ least)

Shall We Digress?

That was nice.

Then here comes the self-proclaimed King of R&B, Bobby Mothaf*ckin Brown. One word, many syllables:

Lmao.

He started off in a suit& baseball cap, but somehow made his way down to a half opened shirt. I understood why he had the hat on though. He proceeded to hump the floor in true Bobby Brown fashion. This was only followed up by---what else? His kids dancing on stage. Gotta love Bobby.

When's the new season of Being Bobby Brown coming owt?

....And finally, thee Grand Finale, Keith Sweat!!!

Chiiiiilllllle, Can't nooobody tell me nothin 'bout no Keith!

Now I am well aware of this man's age, but his smoothness (which is paralleled then surpassed by none other than Denzel Washington and Barack Obama themselves) is undeniable. He'll have his own post later. Trust me.

Now he wasn't on stage nearly long enough, but his finale was 'I Want Her'. Ohhh, but he wasn't alone. Not only did Bobby Brown, Bowlegged Lou, Paul Anthony and Rakim come back to the stage, (not to mention that lil' dude with his hair so slicked down it resembled), but so did this guy:

Flava Flav. I can't hate him, I don't love him. This is confusing.

At any rate I had a fantastic time. I thoroughly enjoyed myself- but I still think Keith Sweat's part coulda been a little bit a lot longer. However, It's always good to see the classics performed, done by the origionators!

Say Cheese!

Love,

Ms. Officer

Today, my wife and I tried to get tickets to see Oasis at Madison Square Garden on December 17, a show I have been looking forward to since I heard they were releasing a new CD and were planning on touring. The presale was scheduled for Tuesday with the General Sale scheduled for today, October 3.

The presale tickets that popped up were all in the second half of the arena, the area further from the stage. I tired pulling tickets up a few times in hopes of getting seats closer to the stage but did not get anything so I figured they were saving the seats up front for the general sale so I did not buy any and waited for today.

This morning, at 10am, my wife and I try for tickets and immediately starting getting tickets in similar sections in the back of the arena that were being offered in the presale. I tried a few times and it was the same each time. After about 15 minutes, we figured we should jump on a pair of these seats in case the show sells out and we were left out of the show and we did, a pair in the 300s, about middle of the arena. Once these were locked in, we tried for fun to see if the show would sell out and suddenly, out of the blue, a pair of tickets in the 100s, right at the side of the stage pop up! We ended up grabbing those and hope to sell the others at face before the show. Once we got this solitary pair in the 100s, we just checked again for fun and the tickets popping up were in the back of the arena again.

Where were the good floor seats and the rest of the sections near the stage? I understand that some are saved for radio stations, VIPs (whetever that means) , etc but usually some good seats are available based on the hundres of shows I have bought tickets for in the past.

Anyway, Im in and I cannot wait. I have seen Oasis about 10 times and they have been awesome every time!

Today we were doing some background work on some of the preseason tournaments - you know, the Maui, the PNIT, the Coaches v. Cancer, the CBE (formerly Guardians) Classic, etc. - and we came across some information that absolutely floored us. Seriously - like a-George-Mason-administrator-who-also-happens-to-be-a-college-football-referee-selling-his-F4-rings-on-Ebay (h/t GMB) floored us.

When we started researching the CBE Classic and the Legends Classic, both tournaments put on by The Gazelle Group organization, we discovered very quickly that we couldn't find a complete bracket for these tournaments. Instead, all we located was a weird one-page listing of matchups on the CBE site, and a similar listing in addition to a four-team "Championship Bracket" on the Legends site. As we floundered wondering what the hell was going on with these tournaments, we noticed an interesting little phrase tucked into the middle of the page of the CBE site (emphasis added).

This year, the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic will be played under a new format...

- Regional hosts automatically advance to the Championship Rounds in Kansas City regardless of the regional results.

- All other participants will advance to play a round-robin series at one of two other sites. Thus, every participating team will be guaranteed four games.

Ummmmm.... whaaaaaaattt???

Is this some kind of a joke? Does The Gazelle Group think that we, the college hoops public, are complete effing morons? How can they get away with this??? One of the ironclad bastions of basketball at every level from peewee league up to the pros is the idea of tournament play - you win, you advance. You lose, you go home. And here we have the first instance we've ever seen where that rule of basketball law is being fixed supplanted so that the money teams get to keep playing irrespective of their on-court performance.

Oh, but RTC, Kansas, Florida, Washington and Syracuse are going to win those CBE Classic games against a couple of nobodies anyway. Same for Wazzu, Mississippi St, Pitt and Texas Tech in the Legends Classic. No harm, no foul, right?

Where's My Shotgun?

Well, here's a reminder for those of you with that clouded mentality - Gardner-Webb. Does that name ring a bell from last year's CvC Classic? In the subregional round, the little school from outside of Charlotte shocked the basketball world by defeating mighty Kentucky in its worst home loss in almost two decades. In the middle of football season, that loss earned far more attention in the national media (PTI, Sportscenter, etc.) than whoever won that tournament actually got. But the problem, apparently, was that the Kentucky loss resulted in G-W and its dozens of fans going to NYC to play in Madison Square Garden rather than the Big Blue and its legions of fans (and dollars). So this year the Gazelle Group has managed to rig the system in two of its sponsored tournaments so that the marquee names have a 100% chance (as opposed to the 99% chance they previously had) of getting to the semifinal round.

Sorry Fairleigh Dickinson, Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama and Akron (among others), The Gazelle Group doesn't have room for you on its dance card this year. But hey! At least you're guaranteed four games, right? That's just as good as playing in a big-time arena on ESPN, right?

Memo to TGG for next season - why don't we just take a vote of 12 random teams and declare it the champion of the tournament? That way we can simply do away with the tedium of getting teams to the various locations, televising the games, and actually worrying about who will advance to the next round! You can run ads on ESPN for a month given all the money you'll save! As for your judges, we hear that there's a former French Olympic judge available to serve on your panel, and Katherine Harris is always around for this sort of thing...

What a stinking, heaping, vomit-inducing pile of abomination.

Please tell The Gazelle Group how much they suck at: gazelle@gazellegroup.com.

Oasis have permitted their entire new album, Dig Out Your Soul, to be streamed on their MySpace page from today until the end of the week. Listeners can hear the album but will not be able to download the tracks. Dig Out Your Soul is being released on October 6th in the UK and on October 7th in America.

Noel Gallagher, who had been very critical in the past of bands like Radiohead who had given their music away for free, spoke to BBC 6 Music today on the subject of the MySpace streaming. He said:

"I only found that out when I read it in the newspaper today. I don’t have any opinion on that sort of thing. I don’t get involved. I’ve done a little bit for the Web site in the past. Are people streaming it on MySpace? Good luck to them.

"Somebody texted me today with it all and a load of jargon that I don’t understand and I was going, 'Yes, I don’t know what that means...but yes!' "

Last year, after Radiohead had announced their music giveaway, Noel Gallagher had opined:

"I didn't spend a year in the most expensive studio in England, with the most expensive producer in America and the most expensive graphic designer in London, to then give it away. F--k that."

For more on the story of Oasis streaming their new album on MySpace, see the articles on the Web sites of BBC 6 Music and The Times of London.

Yesterday, Alan McGee, the founder of Creation Records and the man who is credited with "discovering" Oasis, had an article praising Oasis published on the Web site of the UK newspaper, The Guardian. McGee wrote in part:

I understand that openly admitting to liking Oasis is inviting confrontation, but you know what? Being an Oasis fan is never having to say I'm sorry. And I'm not. Leave saying sorry to the Coldplay imitators as their era of bedwetter music is over. It's only Glasvegas and Oasis for competition in this country. If you are in a band and are not artistically competing with the creative rock'n'roll genius of Oasis or Glasvegas, it's time to just stop and get off the treadmill. This is how rock'n'roll should be done in the United Kingdom today.

Oasis recently announced dates for a North American tour, including a December 17 show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. For full Oasis tour dates, see their MySpace page.

October 2008 begins in just a few minutes, which means singing icon Madonna is set to take the stage

October 2008 begins in just a few minutes, which means singing icon Madonna is set to take the stage at Madison Square Garden in New York City for 4 popular shows between Monday October 6, 2008 and Sunday October 12, 2008. Given the very high box office price for Madonna tickets, the early shows in particular will likely be a great example of an opportunity for consumers to actually obtain tickets for less money through a concert ticket broker than from the box office.

Madonna warms up the New York area with a show on Saturday October 4th at the Izod Center in East Rutherford New Jersey. As much as the fans in New York would like the attend the show, in times of economic uncertainty on Wall Street a face value upwards of $300 per ticket for lower level tickets and floor seats may prove to be a little too steep. As always, searching with a trusted source such as a reputable ticket broker can prove very valuable. Remember their prices are set by the open market and if supply exceeds demand prices will be below face value (which is below your actual cost when buying from Ticket Master). At the box office, prices remain constant even when tickets are practically being given away but you can realize those savings when dealing with a ticket broker.

Tickets are not always more expensive on the secondary market!

Joe Calzaghe has given up his WBO super-middleweight title after almost 11 years as champion.

The Welshman had been the longest reigning champion in his sport, having defended the WBO belt 21 times, four short of the all-time record for consecutive defences held by heavyweight great Joe Louis.

However he is focusing on his light-heavyweight showdown with American legend Roy Jones Jnr at New York's Madison Square Garden on Saturday, November 8, and seems certain never to fight as a super-middleweight again.

Denis Inkin and Fulgencio Zuniga are set to battle it out for the vacant title in Hamburg on Saturday.

Calzaghe, 36, told the South Wales Argus: "It was a tough decision to make, relinquishing the belt, I can tell you that without hesitation.

"It's just too hard to get down to the 12-stone super-middleweight limit."

He added: "The 10-year anniversary was a wonderful marker for me and I feel it's an appropriate time to end any doubt about me fighting at that weight again.

"I received my promoter's licence this week, Calzaghe Promotions is up and running and I feel like I am entering a new phase, not just in my career, but in my life.

"I had a great relationship with the WBO and although it was painful to give up the title, I know I have made the right decision."

Just as I knew how much I did not want to get out bed this morning, I also knew I wouldn’t make it very long without posting something about Weezer. Ah, Weezer. It is such a loaded word, isn’t it? A band of losers who played in a band in the garage down the street who later burst into the alternative scene leaving everyone who was between the ages of 8 and 28 wishing they also looked like Buddy Holly. A band that has challenged my way of thinking by inspiring me to demand more and strive for the good life while simultaneously asking myself, “why bother?” A band that as much as I love them, I cannot say I actually enjoy listening to any of their last 4 albums in its entirety. Nevertheless, they do hold a place in my heart and that is what led me to read the awesome review of their show at Madison Square Garden.

Now, even though this is a band that has lost a few things along the way (a bass player who they should be begging to come back) and apparently some of rivers’ hair (what’s up with the bald spot?), according to the article, they have not lost their love of trying pleasing their fans. Not only did they actually bring 30 of their fans on stage to perform their opening song, My Name Is Jonas, but they must have been listening when I cried myself to sleep all those nights wishing for a set list that included songs from Pinkerton!

Check it out:
01 "My Name Is Jonas"
02 "Pink Triangle"
03 "Perfect Situation"
04 "Say It Ain't So"
05 "Susanne"
06 "Keep Fishin'"
07 "King"
08 "Undone (The Sweater Song)" (w/ Tom DeLonge)
09 "Pork And Beans"
10 "Dreamin'"
11 "Dope Nose"
12 "Troublemaker"
13 "Automatic"
14 "Hash Pipe"
15 "El Scorcho"
16 "Morning Glory" (Oasis cover)
17 "Greatest Man That Ever Lived"
Encore 1:
18 "Island In The Sun"*

I have to thank my friend Pete for buying these tickets and giving me mine as a birthday gift. I've seen Weezer about 6 or 7 times since my first time in 1994 when they opened for LIVE at my future college, LIU C.W. POST on their Throwing Copper tour. Every time I've seen them since that first hazy time they seem to get better. They play more songs - obviously, they also play them with more energy. I turned to Pete at one point during the show and said, "In 10 years we're going to be those old guys I used to laugh at when I was 17 at Ramones concerts." To which Pete replied, "You mean old like the guys on stage?" In other words, who cares? I hope I still want to go see concerts in 10 years. I won't be that old; only 41. I just hope I don't look too foolish rocking out, playing air drums like I did the other night. There's something very fulfilling in that.

E a Central Park, tutti corrono!

[caption id="attachment_101" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Sir, Tinto e Ric davanti al The Garden"][/caption]

Merita davvero.

[caption id="attachment_102" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Hockey NHL in the Madison Square Garden"][/caption]

THE READERS CHOICE n.1

From Billboard:

Wilco will begin recording its next album in October, Billboard has learned. The follow-up to 2007's "Sky Blue Sky" is expected for a spring release via Nonesuch. After opting for a highly performance-oriented recording approach on "Sky Blue Sky," frontman Jeff Tweedy said in a recent radio interview that he expects Wilco will "allow ourselves a little bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instrument. Last time around, it was more of a document." Wilco will take a break from the studio at the end of the year for nine dates supporting Neil Young, beginning Nov. 29 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and wrapping Dec. 15 at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Since that article has been written, Neil Young and Wilco have added a second date at MSG.

[caption id="attachment_70" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Ground Zero"][/caption]

La frase: "We will never forget"
La canzone: "Last night di P. Diddy"
